- In functional medicine, we don’t divide the body into separate organs; we look at the functioning of seven different systems. Nearly every one of the 155,000 diseases listed in the disease classification system known as ICD-10 is caused by imbalances in these seven interconnected systems. Fix those systems and you fix the problem.
How do you do that? You start with food. You can eat to reverse deficiencies. You can eat to heal your gut, reduce inflammation, enhance your immune function, balance your hormones, and boost your detoxification system. You can eat to strengthen your bones and your muscles. In this episode, I explain how to do this through The Pegan Diet, what foods to avoid, nutrient deficiencies, eating sustainably, and much more.
I dived into this topic even further in my conversations with Tom Bilyeu, Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham.
Tom Bilyeu is a filmmaker and serial entrepreneur who chased money hard for nearly a decade and came up emotionally bankrupt. To that end, he and his partners sold their technology company and founded Quest Nutrition-a company predicated not on money, but rather on creating value for people with the mission to end metabolic disease, something impacting Tom’s own family. After exiting Quest and generating extraordinary personal wealth, Bilyeu turned his attention to the other pandemic facing society, the poverty of poor mindset. To solve the mindset problem at scale and help hundreds of millions of people adopt an empowering mindset he has co-founded the media studio Impact Theory with his business partner and wife, Lisa Bilyeu. Their aim is to influence the cultural subconscious by creating content that empowers people.
Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential medical doctors in the UK and hosts the most listened to health podcast in the UK and Europe, Feel Better, Live More. His first three books have all been #1 Sunday Times bestsellers and his latest, Feel Better in 5, shows people how to transform their health in just 5 minutes. It has been a smash hit in the UK, selling almost 100,000 copies in just 7 months, and has just been published in the United States. Professor BJ Fogg, the world’s leading expert in human behavior, calls this book, “One of the best habit change programs he has seen-deceptively simple but remarkably effective.” Dr. Chatterjee regularly appears on BBC News and Television and has been featured in numerous international publications including The New York Times, Forbes, The Guardian and Vogue, and his TED Talk, “How To Make Disease Disappear,” has been viewed almost 3 million times.
Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine.
I went mainly plant based and went from 143 to 131 in six months didn't think i had 12 to lose feel wonderful age 70
People can do the same with meat as well. Eating lots of healthy vegetables is a good thing.
@Owi Owi I think you are incorrect. Veganism does not have all nutrients nor will it fix our issues. You are correct that MOST fish and meat is polluted but the same can be said about plants and vegetables. Only get meats and fish from organic sources where you know the animals lived a good life (of which good food is but one of the criteria). Veganism will work short term since people tend to transition from a StandardAmericanDiet, a diet which is extremely toxic. Im not against veganism but I cannot tolerate it, it made me mentally unstable which I linked to a lack of Omega3 fats/Cholesterol. Once I started to add organ meats and eggs to my diet my brain started to function again.
Keto diet causing deaths ? that is pure nonsense and non-scientific. Me and my friends have never been healthier on keto. Please read your own studies and realise that modern keto is definitely not the same as the 100% fat diets from the 60s. You could look into Dr. Berg's videos explaining keto and why it still has a bad reputation.
ps. you can have all the doctorates in the world, that does not make your educated opinion the right one. Always keep an open mind and be willing to learn. I too have studied as a nutrionist and found out later trough self study that most of what I learned was plain wrong.
@Owi Owi they don't.
Maybe they should stop putting hormones in animals.
Interesting and unbiased discussion. I wish more influencers would stop engaging in diet wars and be sensible in dietary recommendations. "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants" is still the best advice out there (especially avoiding all processed foods and wheat). All the brilliant longevity scientists who are currently working on life extension agree with that. Stop following layman hacks who have no evidence to offer and something to sell. The science is quickly emerging on this front.

Jää
11:02 that’s not the only difference, it’s not that simple :there are the keto dieters who will not eat a bunch or fruits and veggies, there is the carnivore diet that has only meats that has tremendously helped with a lot of inflammation based ailments… gaps diet etc I think the only common denominator is the fresh Whole Foods thing . And I think that’s the real problem…our so called food is not food
The issue with most of the world is the over consumption of carbohydrates. It is the primary reason why there are so many people who are insulin resistant and who have developed diabetes.
A person who eats nothing but fruit could be develop those issues as well and person who eats nothing but meat can develop those issues.
Valuable information!
Dr. Hyman is honey bad for me with my arthritis problem
What about flour made from beans? Is it safe?
That’s a musical fruit. The more you eat the more you toot.
I’ve been suffering from gi issues for over 2 years. Been to doctor after doctor and at this point nothing help.
Can anyone tell me what specific test I can ask for to see specifically gut health.
See a functional doctor, they do several tests to see what’s happening in the gut.
@juanio
I would suggest a functional medical doctor or integrative medical doctor who specialize in GI and Gastroenterology/internal medicine.
Have you had a colonoscopy and have you had endoscopy to check that there is nothing obvious?
The sorts of tests that you could consider are a methane breath test and a SIBO breath test but rather than going for the individual tests I would think it would be better to have an overall approach.
@@bighands69 I got both endoscopy and colonoscopy done last year and they where clean. I’m just doing my own research and trying to get better

Mary Hyman has some really good books for diet lifestyle. Another good book is Dr Grossman Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well Forever.
I would suggest that you consider seeing a functional medicine doctor or integrated medicine doctor that actually specializes in GI and internal medicine. You can go down the route of individual tests if you are unable to to get these types of doctors.
A sibo test and methane breath test are relatively inexpensive tests and a Fibroscan can allow you to check your liver.
If you want to learn start with the liver and Colon and then GI system.
Probiotics, fermented food
Girls who dont eat alot of soy or any are going through puberty early. Soy isnt the only problem. There is more to it.
I think that the hormones and antibiotics in our dairy products may have something to do with it.
Hormones added to our food supply via animal products.
Genetics, diet rich in processed carbohydrates, digestive issues, metabolic disorder and several other potentials.
There is no one size fits all with these issues but there are main culprits.
How much magnesium and vitamin D do you recommend daily?
Pistachios have plenty of Mg
2,000-4,000 units with food. Magnesium has a poor absorption and laxative effect. Magnesium glycine has better absorption. Pistachio has plenty magnesium
Pumpkin seeds have more Magnesium
If you are thinking of taking Vitamin D, don't forget to take Vitamin K2 also, not only Magnesium.
Recently I read that Vitamin K2 should not be taken with Vitamin D however, that it should be taken at different time eg.: Vitamin D + Magnesium _(depends on the form, there are many, you could try malate for example)_ in the morning, Vitamin K2 in the evening.
With Vitamin D, don't go to higher doses than needed unless you are defficient and your doctor recommended it. There are people who've taken it every day in high doses without supplementing Magnesium and/or Vitamin K2 and it caused them kidney issues, because of hypercalcemia.
@@e.v.c4556
_"Magnesium has a poor absorption and laxative effect."_
That is true only for some forms like oxide, and citrate maybe. Magnesium malate, taurate, (bis)glycinate (which you mentioned), threonate don't cause any of these issues, so it's fine to supplement it.
_"Pistachio has plenty magnesium"_
You'd have to eat a lot of pistachio (rather expensive) and other magnesium rich foods to hit your daily target and as we know, foods don't contain as much magnesium as they used to back then.
Near Carnivore here
CNN)Eating beef, lamb, pork and processed meats will increase your risk of coronary heart disease later in life, according to a new meta-analysis of studies on over 1.4 million people who were followed for 30 years.

Hello
These people just don't understand,
You don't need to eat protein, you make your own protein from fruits and vegetables,
All protein comes from fruits and vegetables, you don't need any animal products or beans and grains
YOU MAKE YOUR OWN PROTEIN
If you don't understand that you know very little about what your talking about .
🤣🤣
You do not make protein from fruits and vegetables.
@@karend.9218 yes you do ,
Go and tell that to the elephants and monkeys and gorillas and all the uther animals that are plant eaters ,
Humans eat animals to get protein but were do you think the animals got that protein from ,
Plants .
So make your own fresh protein.
@@roberttravistext5091
Monkeys also eat meat like humans. An elephant is herbivores and humans are not. While it is true that humans can generate proteins they can also generate carbohydrates from fats if need be but neither of those approaches are good in the long term and are extremely narrow.
@@bighands69 not true, I am a raw vegan and have been for over 25 years , I am 61 and look 40 I have no health problems and have more energy than I can deal with ,
I am proof that you don't need to eat protein.
I listened to my body not people that think that now something.
