I can just about keep up with there conversation, infact I can't really I just nod and agree but I totally get you. Just listening to a massively intelligent and passionate person talk about cars makes me smile.
I personally think this was a horrible review because this guy was totally against the vehicle before he ever even drove it. The vehicle is what it is. It's all about the cool factor ''with a warranty'' and will occasionally do some offroading. It was never meant to be the ultimate over lander that would out do every heavily modified vehicle still functioning.
The owner of this 4x4 company is really good on camera, I'm not even a fan of those type of rides but I would be more than happy listening to him explain the tech and engineering behind it all. Give the man his own show!
his last comment is bang on for all new cars. "there's too much electronics inside it to make it viable outside of its warranty" cars are basically becoming throw away items
I don't think it's necessary the portals that limit the uptravel. It's more the fact that portal axles are typically combined with larger tires that wouldn't clear the bodywork at the upper limit of the stock suspension travel, so they have to limit the uptravel. If you look at vehicles like the Humvee, which was designed from the start with portals in mind, it still has pretty decent suspension travel.
Jonathan is a bit to negativ about the 4x4^2, it's an awesome truck and between the lines that hint on his trucks he admits that this thing is simply awesome
I think this car is more optimized for desert wheeling than the rocks and mountains. It can do basic overlanding but its suspension design seems to easily tip sideways in medium to advanced bumps and elevations. Great engineering from Mercedes.
my opinion, that guy sounds like a hater. its nice, but you lose suspension trade...l. i guess they had to do that if they want it to be good..... they'll make like 50 or less... dude not only is everything great on that truck but its made to last and that is a production car that has to drive like a regular car without compromises and it has to meet a lot of safety standards and regulations.
+Alexander Senna The comment making 50 or less has to do with him suggesting it's special. Right before that he says "there will be more butts than seats" meaning there will be more demand than supply.
yes i understand that, but the meaning behind it is that mercedes benz wont make a car like that. but in this case they made the car so its "mercedes won't make more than a few."
+rahowhero yes, thats exactly what it is. people just don't get it. Thats why every country for the last 30 years has been using Land Cruisers for the Military. and land cruisers even have 50 liters of wax in their frames so it doesnt rust, they also galvanize it.
+ChemicalNBC you obviously don't understand sarcasm. for over 30 years the entire world has been using G wagens for the military and the wax is inside the g wagens frame so it won't rust not the toyota. the the toyota is being used because its cheap and parts are cheap.
ya I'm happy for you. first i didn't say they ONLY use g wagens. 2nd United States USMC IFAV The USMC Interim Fast Attack Vehicle (IFAV) is a modified version of the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen 290. It replaces the modified M-151A21⁄4 ton truck (MUTT jeep) used by the Marines as an FAV in the 1990s. The U.S. Marine Corps acquired 157 of the IFAVs distributed as follows: (I) Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) Camp Pendleton, CA (33); (II) MEF Camp Lejeune, NC (25); (III) MEF on Okinawa, Japan (27); (IV) 17 Force Recon, Afghanistan (22); (V) 3 Force Recon Bn, Iraq (23); (VI) 1st Provisional DMZ Police Company, Korea (15); and (VII) various miscellaneous (12) go down and look up which countries use it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_G-Class#Military_operators
I remember seeing the ICON guy on jay lenos garage a few years back...really cool guy...who knows his sh*t.... just watched the mondial video...stepping up your game drive...keep em coming..Thankyou....hi from Australia
The guy wonders if the computers are sealed. Well, Mercedes claim it can drive through 1 metre-deep water. Richard Hammond tested this with the 6x6 version, and it was no problem at all. A long as you respect those factory stated limits, you're perfectly fine.
My beautiful and amazing mistress 'one of' doesn't mean 'number one' if anything the toyota land cruiser is better than this, given eu has the unimog with its primary military based used isn't as known to have both on road and off road usage like the jeep
Integrated gear box at each wheel hub that raises the vehicle up for another 8 inches or so of ground clearance. Mercedes originally used them on the Unimogs.
The Mercedes G, is a military vehicle , and already manufacture this model with axels portal , for many years , recently ( +/- 10 years) is manufacturing with 6X6 , not sell them to the public, these AMG models , just add the luxury! BUT , you are far from imagining the capabilities of these cars! Ps . as former military , I know !
It's nice to see someone who knows so much but the problem--to me--is he uses terminology only a small subset are going to understand. If the video were twice as long where he explained each item in depth it would be great.
Nobody cares about uptravel which is why the old ford TTB axles went away. I personally loved those because they can easily be setup for the same stuff the new IFS raptor is supposed to do. (Jumps, whoops, etc) with ridiculous amounts of travel and a plush ride to boot.
I think it's the doublemint gum green that throws it over the top LOL. But I'm going to be a hipster and admit that I'd want one if I was filthy rich and lived in the city.
Not safe? It has alot of airbags and is almost as high as a truck. Safer than 95% of the cars on the road for the people inside. Also if you see the tests of this car in the snow/desert the springs are doing fine. They should do a offroad race with that car against an Icon and hear his opinion afterwards.
This looks like a truck to take it to a offroad camping trip but all the electronics and stuff just is crap. Im a huge merc fan but idk what they want with this car?
Legally in a lot of US states you only need a rear licence plate. California requires both but you only get a fine or something trivial like that for not having one so a lot of people don't bother. You can put what you feel like on the front as the fine is for not having a plate, not having the wrong style of plate.

This is great. The guy is knowledgeable and the car is among my top favorites. But damn it! Expose the video properly if you are showing the underneath of the car! arrrrgh
#britek Reduces 'UpTravel' by 50%. Conservation of Angular Momentum. Massive rolling resistance improvement. Lever advantage. See our bicycle videos...High Frequency 'In Wheel Suspension'. Never Flat Logistics.
+Matt Kingsley It is what you just saw. I believe you are from the states, It may explain why you have never heard of it, considering that the american market is relatively small for the Geländerwagen.
Many questions. Anybody care to do a quick ELI5 on this car? Why did they build this thing in the first place? Is it a one-off proof of concept? If it is, why do that on a decades-old platform?
One could argue the G wagon is old. You can get new Land Cruisers but the G still looks the same. Mercedes themselves are doing what your doing but you still no likey? Confused
I would rather buy a Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Swap a new Hemi in and redo some of the materials on the inside. You can get portal axles from the dealer and a lift also from the dealer and still have half the money this crap cost. Plus a better offroad experience.
Sorry but Jeep holds it resale value Way better than Merc. any day.Fact. And when does a Jeep not come with a warranty. IF your thinking because of the Mods there done by the dealer so the warrant retains. Try again Bubby
My FORD BRONCO is better in every way. =P Nah seriously this thing is cool, you never get to see a luxury offroader, that takes balls if you ask me. It's like a big expensive hunk of precision made metal, made for the STREET and OFFROAD. Deep down I kinda want one honestly. (Not neon though.)
Right person to talk about this kind of vehicle! No BS no nonsense, appreciate a lot. Keep this way.
I can just about keep up with there conversation, infact I can't really I just nod and agree but I totally get you. Just listening to a massively intelligent and passionate person talk about cars makes me smile.
+Goldys Garage he's built a multi million dare I say it business out of it. He's passionate and not sponsored, exactly what we need to hear.
I personally think this was a horrible review because this guy was totally against the vehicle before he ever even drove it. The vehicle is what it is. Goldy's, I totally agree
also misinformation.
Jonathan is just so natural and believable.....The kind of person you would listen to....
The owner of this 4x4 company is really good on camera, I'm not even a fan of those type of rides but I would be more than happy listening to him explain the tech and engineering behind it all. Give the man his own show!
+guyver33 Yeah really! Down to Earth guy! You can tell he's really passionate about what he does.
He posts test drives of all his builds. And they are gorgeous. See Icon 4x4 on instragram. Jonahtan Ward on RUclips.
Like James May
Guys like this that truly understand a product as complicated as this truck are a pleasure to listen to.
This guy is great. I want to hear his opinion on all kinds of trucks!
aaaaaaalllll kindz
+David Larson agreed..does he have his own channel?
+Adrian Wallace (Simplly Addy) yes he does and it's a great channel showcasing his stuff. It's same as his name. Easy to find!
+David Larson Check out the recent The Smoking Tire Podcast with him, Jonathan Ward, as a guest.
They should do a show called "The Warden" where Ward just gives his opinion on stuff.
his last comment is bang on for all new cars.
"there's too much electronics inside it to make it viable outside of its warranty"
cars are basically becoming throw away items
not becoming. Have already become
I loved listening to Jonathan Ward. He is well spoken, knowledgeable, and easy to listen to. Please have him on more videos like this.
Super interesting learning about portal axles diminishing spring travel.
I don't think it's necessary the portals that limit the uptravel. It's more the fact that portal axles are typically combined with larger tires that wouldn't clear the bodywork at the upper limit of the stock suspension travel, so they have to limit the uptravel.

Yeah that seemed like a little sour grapes from Mr Ward
Great to see Jonathan Ward. Dude is knowledgeable.
Jonathan Ward is my absolute inspiration to completely build my 1950 GMC from the ground up.
Really good segment with a very knowledgeable guest! Too bad there aren't any 6x6s for him to provide his opinion on as well.
Please make more videos with John Ward
Jon Ward's info was great. Hope to see him again!
that was great,2 guys knowing what they talking about
make more!!!
Jonathan is a bit to negativ about the 4x4^2, it's an awesome truck and between the lines that hint on his trucks he admits that this thing is simply awesome
Jonathan Ward is the best.
Watching Jonathan Ward geek out about floating flanges makes me want a HELL of a lot more of this guy.
He was on one of the more recent Smoking Tire podcasts, it was really good to listen to.
This was the best content I have ever scene on drive it was great thank you
Holy crap FINALLY , someone talks my language . straight up. AWSOME .
Really interesting video. You guys should definitely have Jonathan Ward on again, he is a very interesting part of the current car culture/ community
I saw a silver one driving in London on some youtube video and didn't know there was a 4x4 version, that color is crazy though.
That was seen through glass
I think this car is more optimized for desert wheeling than the rocks and mountains. It can do basic overlanding but its suspension design seems to easily tip sideways in medium to advanced bumps and elevations. Great engineering from Mercedes.

It really is impressive and highly unlikely Mercedes ever embark on something like this again
I remember seeing the ICON guy on jay lenos garage a few years back...really cool guy...who knows his sh*t.... just watched the mondial video...stepping up your game drive...keep em coming..Thankyou....hi from Australia
KNAWWWWWWLEDGEEEE would like to see more videos on the 4x4squared
the control arms are unicorns.
It was me THAT guy who did all the CAN bus work.
Looks like a lemon, drives like a lemon.
This is a beauty!! 😍😍😍
To bad it's not coming to America!! 😢😢
More Jonathon Ward!
A true Top Gear Guy!!!
Portals have absolutely nothing to do with limited uptravel.
a little brabus mod to that probably a widestar kit , would look awesome
The guy wonders if the computers are sealed. Well, Mercedes claim it can drive through 1 metre-deep water. Richard Hammond tested this with the 6x6 version, and it was no problem at all. A long as you respect those factory stated limits, you're perfectly fine.
And this one is "just" the 6x6 with two wheels chopped off.
You can still see the reinforced suspension at the rear axle.
Great vid. More like this.
I love Jonathan Ward
Finally, a cool Merc I would actually drive lol
Can you explain again, how portal axles lessen the suspension travel?
EU beat the US in their own game , V8 , 4x4, off road etc. and I can sense the bitterness.
Still not better at off-road but this is nice
My beautiful and amazing mistress 'one of' doesn't mean 'number one' if anything the toyota land cruiser is better than this, given eu has the unimog with its primary military based used isn't as known to have both on road and off road usage like the jeep
Those look like axeltech portals, not unimog. Which makes sense for a qty 50 vehicle.
So whats the pros and cons of Portal axles on a vehicle ?
the 4 door ford next to is is 1000x cooler than the KardashianWagen
Whats the difference between a portal and a regular axle?
Integrated gear box at each wheel hub that raises the vehicle up for another 8 inches or so of ground clearance. Mercedes originally used them on the Unimogs.
so whats more reliable? the old N/A v8 or this new turbo v8?
The Mercedes G, is a military vehicle , and already manufacture this model with axels portal , for many years , recently ( +/- 10 years) is manufacturing with 6X6 , not sell them to the public, these AMG models , just add the luxury! BUT , you are far from imagining the capabilities of these cars! Ps . as former military , I know !
German plate on the front and US plate on the rear?? How does that work?
This is a real Mercedes! This is what makes you say "The best or nothing"
Cool ride.
It's nice to see someone who knows so much but the problem--to me--is he uses terminology only a small subset are going to understand. If the video were twice as long where he explained each item in depth it would be great.
I've seen 2 of these in Sofia, Bulgaria!
i never thought about the "up travel"
its so true that most new vehicles are not worth anything a lease cycle. cars are most definitely designed to fail after a handful of years.
What shitmobiles have you been buying
Leasing is best by far.
its all planned obsolescence
+kenneeeh! Exactly
VW Golf with DSG
BMW X5
Why is the new video now privated. I was watching it earlier
I am wondering the same, i tried to share it with my friend who loves dirt bikes and he couldnt watch it
This was originally made for the German army so am sure the electronics were thoroughly tested for the rigors.
that's awesome
my name is Jonathan Ward too
+shaun Way to go with your contribution to mankind.
why has the front got a German registration plate and a california one on the back?
Nobody cares about uptravel which is why the old ford TTB axles went away. I personally loved those because they can easily be setup for the same stuff the new IFS raptor is supposed to do. (Jumps, whoops, etc) with ridiculous amounts of travel and a plush ride to boot.

But I'm going to be a hipster and admit that I'd want one if I was filthy rich and lived in the city.
+cybertree Should have a bigger engine though =P.
the grey head guy is cool. does he have a channel?
Nope, I'm not an engineer, just stayed at Hotel George V last night though. Kidding!
If I ever havE the means to afford something he builds, I will throw my money at him. What a cool guy!
I'm dying for this car's color 😮😮
Lmao Damn Johnathan tore them a new one.
-BIGGER ENGINE
-MORE TRAVEL
-CHANGE COLOR Would be freakin' rad if all this happened.

Why does it have German plates on the front and Californian ones at the back??
Its not legal in US, so its special import. Look at the cali plates even they are different then the usual ones.
Looks like a Manufacturer plate on the back
Jonathan Ward 👍🏻
Jonathan Ward sounds exactly like Stuart from The Big Bang Theory. Just more intelligent. And less awkward.
How to run a youtube channel off a cliff /drive
the Fuck are you talking about? this video is amazingly interesting!
+Malicious SRT why???goes theres no vtec or gtr Yo...fuck outta here
I wish I could afford an ICON.
This looks like a truck to take it to a offroad camping trip but all the electronics and stuff just is crap. Im a huge merc fan but idk what they want with this car?

Can someone explain these "portals" at the wheels that he talks about a lot?
+DarkLegion1985 Google "portal axle". Basically, the center of the wheel is below the axle.
Nice truck
#britek Reduces 'UpTravel' by 50%. Conservation of Angular Momentum. Massive rolling resistance improvement. Lever advantage. See our bicycle videos...High Frequency 'In Wheel Suspension'. Never Flat Logistics.
Wow, Virtually no suspension travel?
Not much concern for "fording depth" in Dubai.
Oh, I didn't want to know what was LITERALLY UNDER it... sigh.
What is this thing? Ive never heard of the g wagon 4x4^2
+Matt Kingsley a new G wagon Variant for people that want to go camping or if you live in Dubai Desert type of terrain.
a more extreme off road suitable version.
+Matt Kingsley It is what you just saw. I believe you are from the states, It may explain why you have never heard of it, considering that the american market is relatively small for the Geländerwagen.
its for the squares that want to offraod
You that a wrap or a factory color. ? Seriously. Mb has always has unique colors that are rare as funk
beautiful. in all ways
Cool but i feel like for an offload application that this is a bit too nice
"1000 millimeters"-otherwise known as a meter...
Many questions. Anybody care to do a quick ELI5 on this car? Why did they build this thing in the first place? Is it a one-off proof of concept? If it is, why do that on a decades-old platform?
why is it on street tires?
I think you can safely say those are "all terrain" tires
+juaneer Yes but in all honestly whoever buys this thingisn't going to be doing much if any offroading so they might as well be street tires.
+juaneer far from all terrains
too smart for his own .. good .. ruins the fun.
One could argue the G wagon is old. You can get new Land Cruisers but the G still looks the same. Mercedes themselves are doing what your doing but you still no likey? Confused
why not just buy a G63 ($150k) and put a lift kit on it? the 4x4 is around $250k
that dude sounds like Doug Benson right? lol
I would rather buy a Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Swap a new Hemi in and redo some of the materials on the inside. You can get portal axles from the dealer and a lift also from the dealer and still have half the money this crap cost. Plus a better offroad experience.
or just buy a land cruiser and do naught to it. and save even more money.
Plus your car will be worthless while this G Wagon will retain its value and comes with a warranty. Try again buddy
Sorry but Jeep holds it resale value Way better than Merc. any day.Fact. And when does a Jeep not come with a warranty. IF your thinking because of the Mods there done by the dealer so the warrant retains. Try again Bubby

i think if it were more icon looking it would be awesome.. hideous yellow the "rear bumper" 😕
So is this the G500 64 (or should it be G564) since it's 4x4^2 and that equals 64? Lmao
No it is 4x4^2 or 4x64
That's not how it works. 4^2=16 and then 4x16=64.
wait! Why is there a German license plate in the front and an american on the backside?
WAAANNTTT
pretty neat, but I'd rather spend that kind of money beefing up my 89 yota
oh yeah. I gotta a standard 1991 ln106 hilux that would shit on this thing, already, on and off road.
show what your talking about I thought this was WHATS UNDERNEATH
