Nice 👍 here in our jurisdiction we are only able to have a maximum of 4 receptacles per small appliance ckt… so we are limited and usually have the dining room on its own 20a
Wow! Thank you for sharing!! that adds to the struggle!
Great job coach!!
The kitchens I wire ALWAYS have a minimum of 5 receptacle circuits…2 for countertops, 1 for disposal/dishwasher,1 for microwave, 1 for refrigerator….lighting NEVER on receptacle circuits
Same here 👍.
I never wire the fridge in with anything else.....own ckt if I have any say so.....
Previous lessons from you would lead me to believe yes. Shall see
In my area (Phoenix AZ) the refer is always on one of the SABCs. It's been that way since I started in the early 70s. Until the internet, I didn't realize you could run a dedicated 15A for the refer. :)
Can you make a video on code requirements for wiring a private fishing dock with a boat lift, light and rec?
Fed from a subpage on shore. Thanks! Enjoy learning! Let's go!
Thank you
Good video
My house is located within New York State and was constructed in 1974. I am presently trying to determine what areas are being served by each of 4, 20A circuit breakers. The labeling at the load center is lacking with this info.
Can anyone tell me what year did the NEC first specify a minimum of two 20A branches in the kitchen area?
At present, there is a duplex outlet located behind the fridge; the fridge and countertop microwave is using that same duplex receptical. I would like to know if, in 1974, the NEC required a dedicated circuit branch for the fridge.
Let’s get to it
When calculating VA’s , if you had a circuit just for the dining area, add those VA’s with the square footage VA’s but how many circuits does a home require in total ? Basic one family
How many 120v, 20 amp general lighting/receptacle circuits would be required for a home with 2,800 sq. ft.?
3 Va per sq ft
2,800 x 3 = 8,400
8,400 / 120 = 70 amps
70 / 20 = 3.5
You must select 4 (there is no rounding down with circuits).
Total Va / Voltage / Designated Amperage = Circuit Required.
(2017/2020)
At a minimum, how many 120v 20 amp circuits must a dwelling unit have?
5 total:
2 kitchen small app
1 laundry
1 bathroom
1 garage (if present)
Assuming this house had the attached garage this house would need a minimum of 9 120v circuits to be code compliant

Last I looked the NEC talks about dining areas but doesn't seem to specify / clarify a dining area from an eating area within a kitchen. IOW, if you have both and they are back-to-back I would presume some sharing might be ok. My dining area is between the kitchen and the living room, and my inspector had no issue with sharing circuits with both. OTOH, that was some years ago so things may have changed. I mean, a kitchen eating area might have a coffee pot or toaster, but a formal dining area will have maybe a warming plate or a vacuum cleaner. (at times) Most times, never more than a light or two.
Thank you . That’s why your the Coach ! Electrical Code Coach . I need those practice test questions . I’ll let you know , once I’ve ordered .

What about lighting?
👍👍
What about the microwave/vent hood
permanently installed microwaves are generally over 1000 watts so will be on their own circuit.
2 SABCs need to be GFCI protected. But. Best not to put fridge on gfci in case of an errant trip causing your food to go bad
