Hi Nicole, I love your videos. I have my gastric bypass October 10, 2023, so I'm about 4.5 months out. In Canada the government covers 100% of the cost for the surgery, the classes and the tests, but it takes a whole year to get approval. I think it's a good system and that year is spent educating yourself on your procedure and how to eat for the stages and then the rest of your life as well as classes for coping with hunger and any side-effects. We have to have three meetings each with a nurse practitioner, a dietitian and a social worker from the clinic as well as one meeting with an internist and two with the surgeon. There were three diet classes of an hour and a half each, a virtual support group you had to attend a minimum of three times as well as management class and work booklet you had to complete over three classes. It was a lot, but by the end of all that and all the tests they run, I felt very prepared and sure of my choice.

Hello Nicole: Thank you so much for posting these videos. I so enjoy the information as well as the honesty in each of them. I am just beginning my journey. My surgery is this coming Thursday, March 7, 2024. Your videos has shown me that even though there are some rough times, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you so very much.

I first went to the Bariatric center I go to in October 2023. I was going to get the Duodenal switch. But my Insurance wouldn't cover it because they deemed it an experimental surgery. So, they approved the Rouen-Y Gastric Bypass. I just had my surgery on Feb. 7th. I started at 363 lbs.
I lost 70 lbs. leading up to my surgery on Feb 7th. By following the dieticians plan of 100-150 grams of protein and 80-90 grams of carbs a day. Along with Exercising where I mainly did resistant band training and I have a rowing machine at home I would use every night. I'm hoping I can lose another 85 -90 lbs. to get to my goal weight. Just so I'm clear, I had all the testing you had as all, along with a Nuclear stress test on the heart with a EKG. I was lucky I got everything finished as fast as I did. I'm a 49 yr old male. I've been morbidly obese for 20 yrs.

It took me an entire year to jump through the hoops. I was fortunate that my insurance covered everything except for $170 copay for the hospitalization. It took a long time to get an appointment with the bariatric psychologist. She made me take an anxiety class which was virtual. The surgeon wanted me to lose 20 pounds before I could schedule surgery. They wanted me to be off of alcohol and cannabis and to stop drinking bubbly water. For some reason the nutritionist and psychologist were very concerned I wouldn’t be able to resist La Croix! I forget what else, but was relieved when I was finally approved for surgery. Then it was another 2 months to get it scheduled. I’m 4 ½ months post RNY and am down a little more than 50 pounds since surgery. Plus the 20 I had to lose in advance. I’m hoping to be below 200 pounds by my birthday in May.

Hey there. I m from germany. I started the program in January 23. I had to exercise frequently and got a nutrion class every month for over 6 month. After that they had to ask the insurance. They decided in november that its covered. And now on 29th February is my surgery day. It took me over a year but i just had to pay a part for the nutritionist. (300€) and of course the vitamins for the rest of my life 😅 i nervous, happy and a bit scared at the same time right now. 😂 i love your Videos. You are so inspiring ❤

I weigh naked so I'm glad they didn't make me weigh in front of a class. Ha! I had to pay $500 out of pocket for the booklet and seminars. I also had to pay $1,200 to the surgeon's office before surgery. Sounds like you had more hoops to jump through than me, but fortunately you passed! My surgery happened three months after I attended the initial "Risks and Benefits" seminar. That seemed like it took forever so you must've needed some serious patience to wait five months.

What are you using in place of the insaids?

After my Gastric Bypass, the Dr gave me hydrocodone 7.5 and 325 Acetaminophen. I assume Acetaminophen is OK to use. He warned me not to ever take Nsaids.

I take childrens tylenol chewables. I have osteoarthritis and have had a knee replacement/revision. The tylenol helps and because it's chewable it's a little easier to take. I had my bypass in October 2023 and, like Nicole, I used to live on NSAIDS and Ibuprofen. I have lost almost 90lbs since I started at my 1st consultation in June 2023 and I really don't have much pain anymore.

Tylenol (although it doesn’t do much for me) and non-pharmacological tools like ice, elevating, compression, distraction (watching Netflix or hanging out with friends/family).
