So relieved to hear ye say that there's a lot of the same smells in whiskeys! Cause sometimes I'll be sipping & sniffing whiskey while watching one of yer videos and and I can think is "I smell whiskey"
Daniel's got it right when he says you talk about and focus on the unique aspects of a bottle not the stuff you're expecting. Rex's palate is just about equal to Daniel's now which is awesome. Great work gents, especially on your distillery juice! Talk about living the dream, cheers brothers!
Dude.. I’m so glad Daniel’s Beard has finally grown in. I bounce around in the chronology of this channel looking for different reviews while I’m at/before going to the State store, and in most of the videos Daniel’s Beard bothers the hell out of me because it’s all but transparent in the early episodes. Love you guys, keep up the gear work!
First Whiskey I ever drank neat was in KC and it was a flight of KC whiskey. My wife and I now buy Rieger's when we can find it. Also just found your videos 2 weeks ago. I now have several bottles of whiskey and look at buying some more just to have different flavors to try. Thanks for the great content. I will do my best to come see you guys if im able to get down to Texas!
Had to poke in 5 years after this video dropped. Just got my hands on a bottle of the Balcones Pot Still from one of my drivers who picked it up on a trip to the US. It's GOOOOOOD. I sent said driver home with a sample of it, and he agrees. He'll be picking up a couple more bottles for us on his next trip.
So, I always have a really hard time distinguishing notes between bourbon--I'm very much a Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Wild Turkey kinda drinker--but I finally saw Balcones Pot Still at the store, and I jumped on it because I've always wanted to try a Texas whisky. And the Balcones is SO different from other bourbons...but it's SO different that I can finally (FINALLY!!) get the same notes on it as you two when I watch one of your videos!! Huzzah!!
How to mooch a $7, 000 whiskey was the first episode of The Whiskey vault I ever watched needless to say it took me quite a few other episodes to get my bearings 😂
Kick ass! I’m glad y’all enjoyed the Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon & glad y’all reviewed it! I agree it’s easy sipping & a good gateway into Balcones or whisky in general, great flavors and not so wild that it will scare a newbie away from quality whiskies. Thanks again Daniel & Rex, y’all take it easy!
@@jasonharris2343 if you ever see a bottle of the Blue Corn Bourbon grab that as well! The Pot Still Bourbon is a four-grain mash-bill, while the Blue Corn Bourbon is 100% Blue Corn. That said though, the BCB is even more excellent!
I'm Houston for spring break and saw the Balcones Bourbon for the first time and had to buy it today. Then I come home and see yall reviewing it. It's a sign. Gonna use it in a 5 whiskey Balcones flight review on my channel.
I crushed my bottle of Balcones Bourbon with a bunch of my non-whisky friends, they said it reminded them of scotch and barbecue - the meaty smokiness was the big dominant flavor for them - they all compared it to either Jonnie Walker Blue (many of them shared a bottle of it for a celebration a few years back) and one of them said "this reminded me of the green one you had me try at your place" referencing Ardbeg 10, which they liked becuase of its similarity to Barbecue. Twenty-something AZ guys if that helps paint the picture, loved smoked meat, but they shoot whisky.
It's funny you should review J. Rieger, I watched a story about them which prompted RUclips to funnel you guys into my feed. That's how I found the Whiskey Vault.
@@thomasbuck303 Thanks brother. The events I described happened a few months back so I've been kicking around for a short while. I love everything about this place and everyone I've met has been really great. Cheers!
Awesome comparison... I think it should be noted that the specific J. Rieger Private Stock that was sent is a partnership with the grocery chain HyVee in Kansas City. I don't know that you'll be able to find that anywhere else. The only other place that I know it is located is in my home bar 😄 Very good stuff, completely agree. Sweet, hot, nice oily finish... It's different without straying too far from home.
Hey Daniel and Rex, I have a Danish friend who is a great fan of you in Aarhus. I’m visiting there soon and all he wants is a pic with y’all and a bottle of Rieger’s. When are y’all at the whiskey vault?
today i was at my usual cigar store in italy to refill my humidor and in the middle of all scotch bottles there was this balcones pot still. The little evil whisky hoarder voice inside me " you always said you want to try a bourbon to make a little detour from Scotch , this is your chance!" . so i bought a bottle and i'm sipping now watching this video. And guys what a trip......not sure if bourbon is my kind of thing, but i will try other things to explore it
I want to know the scotch equivalent to balcones they were talking about. Sounds interesting I’m a huge balcones fan would love to follow that other path too.
Just grabbed the Balcones 100 Proof Rye...and it is the most un-rye rye I think I've ever had. Their cask Strength Rye is also good, but the 100 proof allows the flavours come through a little better. And DAMN! Those flavours completely coat your mouth and settle in. I had a sample about 20 minutes before doing the tour, and I could still taste it an hour later...until we got to the end of the line and tasted the new make.
I've lived in waco tx where balcones distillery is and legit heard about balcones like a couple months ago💀 just got some mini bottles and are about to try them out
Came back to this because Balcones finally distributes to my area and this is what I could get. Nose is better than the flavor, which is a little weak. It's nice. Spicy, pecan, maple syrup, savory/starchy, and a bit of a roasty coffee long finish. Definitely one of the least sweet bourbons I've had. Not IMPRESSED, but enjoyable, good for the price tag, and it's just unique enough to make me look forward to their bigger, better offerings.
I came into Balcone's through the rye expression; the 100 Proof Rye is a fine spirit and after trying it, I began to wonder just what else these guys had up their sleeves. Sadly, local supply is thin, but I'm hoping to work my way through some more of their offerings.
crazy whisky tasting idea. what would sodastreaming a whisky do? would the aeration/carbonation of the whisky make it easier to pick part the nose or taste of the whisky? will it destroy it?
hey guys. just found your channel 3 or 4 weeks ago and since then i've learned much about whiskies and credit you with my discovery of laphroaig 10. i wanted to know if it was normal to be a poor "noser" until maybe the 3rd or 4th glass of whisky. for me, that's when my smell and palate seem to be enhanced enough to detect various things. i would love to be a "magnificent bastard" but my income is very low. thank you both for what you do and know that its very much appreciated
This shit to me before I've had my first sip is ALL WOOD!! Then after my first sip, there's a bunch of different things that show up. It's a helluva ride for a "bourbon"! It's one of my absolute favorite. And 46% is great for a daily drinker....but man, that first sip is always barrel!! 👍
