The Perfect Everyday Automatic Chronograph? - Fortis Classic Cosmonauts Ceramic PM Review

- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- Fortis has history unlike any other and today we take a look at another important watch from their Cosmonautis line. Fortis is also, without a doubt, one of the most underrated but massively horoligicaly important Swiss watch brands too. The predecessors of this Cosmonaut chronograph 401.26.11 have been used in over 50 space missions and are still is worn on the International Space Station. When it comes to attention to detail, performance and reliability, the Russian Space Agency for over 20 years chose Fortis as their official watchmaker. Today we understand why. With it's rich heritage, classic Rolex Daytona meets Omega Speedmaster styled design, modest pricing and outstanding quality, it could quite be one of the best everyday automatic chronographs in it's price range.

THANK YOU!
for another amazing video...and yes we can only agree... awesome intro!
We just wanted to state out two points:
1. In the final version of this model the pushers are screwed down. The one reviewed in this video is a prototype out of our showroom.
2. Why does the Automatic Chronograph work in space?
The rotor works even better in space because there is no gravity that brakes the rotor from turning.
Again. Thank you for the stunning review. we can't wait for the next one.
Best regards
Team FORTIS
FORTIS OFFICIAL Really appriciate watch brands that communicate actively to the public. This shows the effort and appriciation for the community. Thanks Fortis!
Thanks for the clarification on the pushers Fortis, that is one of the reasons I purchased this watch, that and the ceramic bezel, anti reflective crystal, applied lumed Arabic numerals, display back.....
Great watch!
Those watches are ATTRACTIVE no matter where they are, yes ;-)

Any reason you feel the need to be a pedant? Everyone knows what they mean without your interjections.
great watches but way too expensive...
Just bought this one with AM silver dial. Just amazing. My second Fortis.
Your review and video (already 2 years old😊) has been the guideline. Very pleased!!! Thank you TGV🙏🏻
Really beautiful dark bezel!! What a watch, you are definitely putting Fortis on the radar!
Best regards,
João
So glad you like it Joao,
Deffo check them out my friend,
Best regards,
TGV
Recommending Fortis.... Oh... We like our good TGV. I read so much stupid comments about TGV in the comments section in other channels (I also like those other channels, but some of the comments of the audience are so full of envy and low class). For me, your enthusiasm and the fact that you continue to explore not only the top watches, but the entry levels, is a great service to the watch community. I started some years ago buying am Universal Pole Router (A watch TGV will adore, I'm sure). When I start getting more into the hobby, I found this channel. It was great. Some years and watches later, I'm still watching this channel. NO doubt next time in NYC or London, will send an invitation to out host for a nice dinner and wrist check!
It's raining and storming outside and I'm unboxing my Seagull 1963 Chronograph whilst watching a TGV video.
Quite a comfy day.
LOVE IT!!! :D
Enjoy my friend,
Best regards,
TGV
I just want to say that it is indeed a pleasure to witness the joy you get from watches and it is not predicated on prestige or price. I have purchased a TIssot, Hamilton, Raymond Weil and a Seiko thanks to you. The latter from Long Island Watch. Thank you so much....
So very much glad to hear, thank you for sharing that. Enjoy your watches my friend and wear them with pride!
Best regards,
TGV
I think I am falling in love with Fortis looks so beautiful and again great job on the description of the watch by our wonderful host TGV. Thank you.
Just bought my first mechanical watch (Damasko DA36) after discovery your channel. Cheers from Brasil!
Congrats! I am dying to review one, I have only heard great things. Enjoy it!
Thank you Gabe,
Best regards,
TGV
Hi you must be the very best watch reviewer on you tube ,the only problem I have is you make me change my mind on my next watch purchase every week ,my wife is totally fed up with me ,I can't talk about watches any more ,I had settled on a Tudor bbb with an eta movement now I want the Fortis,
That is one stunning watch, the attention to detail is amazing, in my mind the perfect all rounder, right up my street!
Thanks for your videos TGV, they are very helpful and I really appreciate your own attention to detail and presenting style. As a fellow Brit, I also appreciate your colloquialisms, quirks and mannerisms - I always look forward to every video.
Now, get 'er on a NATO, looks made for it!
Thank you Gordy.
Very much appreciated my friend. One the nato as we speak ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Incredible details catched on almost all your videos are really something else. I like your commentary, your attitude to watches and the channel as such, but what really shines is your ability "to sell" watches visually, after watching so many videos of yours I started considering watches I would have never consided from other pictures /videos... Well done.
First of all,
Hi I'm Karl and I am addicted to timepieces! 😂
Secondly everyone must have a grail watch, whether we ever get to that grail watch is another thing. Ive a plan of one day owning the vacheron constantin overseas blue dial, BUT when watches like these that TGV reviews keep popping up I'll never get there!
Fantastic review as always and done in a way that's so easy to view and enjoy.
Also I must say we'll done Fortis for this and many other fine timepieces that they seem to be making, the cockpit one is a stunning timepiece that will in the future become quite sought after I think 👍🏻
Keep them coming TGV and we'll all keep watching 👌🏻
I bought the Fortis B42 Fleiger chronograph about 12 years ago which seems to me a higher spec, it,s got skeletonised blued hands with lumed tips, raised blued indices, drilled lug holes with screwed pins, 200m water resistance and the tachymeter is under the crystal and the pushers are protected. I don,t know how many watches Fortis make a year but I,ve never seen any one else wearing one.I think there one of the watch worlds best kept secret, along with Stowa.
I completely agree with you. Currently, I'm wearing my Fortis B-42 (non-chrono) at my desk in the Pentagon.
Great review! It's great that you share information of the other great houses to an old newbie like me.
Thank you Eddy, very much appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
I literally just bought this exact same watch (with a black leather strap). Thank you for always shining a light on Fortis and their amazing watches, I wouldn't have made the decision to invest on it if it wasn't because of you. Thank you!
I'm about to buy my first good watch: the Seiko SARB033. Thank you for all the information and the inspiration, love the videos!!
As always, great fun to watch your video!!
Love the Thunderbirds intro, brought back memories. I am considering that exact watch, so your review is extremely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do the review.
I swear you make the best intros on all of youtube
Awesome intro, wow, your production value is getting better and better.
Hi TGV
Simply stunning! Could even be a new long term goal for me...
I see from Fortis answer that the automatic winding works even better under weightless conditions. I have often been wondering about this issue.
Keep up the good work👍
Oh man!!!! That is a beautiful watch!! I'm falling in love with Fortis! I'm going to have one....hopefully soon :-) Great video my friend!
Jeremy Corrao you will!!!!! ;-)
You are right on. Fortis makes a stunning watch. I got to see several when I visited the legendary Josef's Clock & Watch Shop in Fort Lauderdale several weeks ago. If the watch was bigger I would buy it. That is my only complaint. Thanks for sharing. That watch deserves the positive exposure this video provides.
Harold!
So glad to hear from you and that you like Fortis too, very much appreciated my friend,
I hope you are well,
Best regards,
TGV
Im sure you have opened a few eyes for some collectors! Will be looking at fortis for sure. Thanks TGV
Very glad to hear, I can not speak highly enough of them.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Soon as I thought I knew which watch to get!!! Thank you once again TGV
Thank you,Shuaib, so glad I could help. Makes it all worth it to hear that.
Best regards,
TGV
Great channel TGV! The vids are very well done, very tasteful. Best of all your enthusiasm really shines through, you get me excited about watches! Not to mention you seem like a real gent, which is very important for this topic. Love how you give equal attention to the entire budget spectrum. Keep up the good work!
What an intro, TGV... Amazing work, as always! Keep pushing!
Greetings from Spain!
Thank you Mario, very kind of you to say. Always appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
P.s. LOVE SPAIN!!!!
Wonderful watches, really thinking about purchasing one now.Well done Fortis and thank you UG for introducing me to this brand!!!!!
I'm a simple man, I see TGV I click like.
If you are watching a review on watches, the odds are you are above or of high intelligence. It's a fact about our hobby, then again, I sometimes have trouble spelling Seiko sometimes LOL
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
I appreciate how Fortis made all the hands associated with the chronograph function the same colour. Very useful and well thought out.
Great review as usual! Owned this and returned it. Bought the Hamilton X-wind for half the price, screw down crowns, same movement, much better power reserve, (64 hours) sapphire crystal etc... Amazing accuracy. You may want to review this piece TGV, Alot of people interested in the watch out there.
Best to you.
K9
K9USA was on the verge of getting this Fortis on jomashop. Seen your comment and looked into the Hamilton. I went with the x patrol. Thanks!
Amazing watch. Great review as always. THANK YOU TGV.
Thank you Rafael :D
Best regards,
TGV
Great intro TGV and great narration, yes NATO definitely. They need that in high vis green.
Nice to see another Fortis on the show. Great watches, great build quality and great value for money. Enough said.!!
Thank you Richard, I have to give you credit to for reminding about the brand back in the old live show days.
I miss that time, anyways, I hope you are well. It was the B-42 Lemania based special you where after right?
Best regards,
TGV
Yes that's right but untill I can get my hands on one I've gone and pulled the trigger on the Fortis stratoliner which is also a cool watch in there collection and already becoming a rare piece.
Very fitting intro musical piece. The Thunderbirds : wow! I was so much into these series when I was young (yes, they screened them in the '90s in Quebec). Great video as always! I just wish these pieces were a bit smaller. Anyway, great products.
Salutations,
JRB
Hey TGV,
It's me again, the one who wanted to know your opinion on Fossil watches.
You suggested me some Brands to take an eye on and I've indeed found two watches from two different brands that really caught my eye and I wanted to know if you've ever had one of these or which one you'd personally choose over the other one and why. If that takes too much of your time I completely understand it but it'd help me immensely!
So the following I've found:
Tissot Le Locle Powermatic 80 white or black dial - very reasonable price for the quality, elegant watch that doesnt stick out too much
Hamilton Timeless Classic Valiant H39515754 - basically same as above, has a more sporty look in my opinion which fits me too but unfortunately no visible movement which I really like on watches
I'd appreciate it so much if you could take a bit from your time to help me out!
Best regards from Berlin,
Chris
I'm early this time. The way you review watches is something special. Cheers!
Thank you so much, deeply flattered. I really enjoy doing it, so glad to hear you appreciate it.
Best regards,
TGV
In TGV's last 2 reviews of Fortis Cosmonaut Chronograph watches, many questions have been raised over how an automatic watch can function in space WITHOUT gravity. The answer to this question is two-fold:
1. Aboard the ISS at an altitude of 200-250 miles, Earth's gravity is roughly 90% of that on the surface. The "weightlessness" that cosmonauts experience is due to "free fall in a vacuum" and NOT a lack of gravity or mass.
2. Automatic watch rotors are actuated by kinetic energy produced by the wearer's motion. While the watch rotor's mass (a property) is constant, the rotor's weight (a force) is generated by the gravitational attraction of the earth. Since gravity increases the weight of a watch's rotor, this requires more energy to move it. As Fortis previously stated, aboard the ISS with a 10% reduction in gravity, automatic watches actually operate more efficiently than on the surface due to this slight reduction in rotor weight.
Hope this helps everyone.
I'm waiting for the day that TGV has a mental slip and says "Now let's pop it on a nato and see how it wears", instead of "Now lets pop it on the wrist and see how it wears."
LOL
Good one Tucker,
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
yeah that with the nato obsession its typically TGV and skwallee =D nvm... but I have 2 say I have skinny wrists and I can wear the b42 with ss strap, height weight and size never been a issue 4 me, wears absolute comfortable... the cases are that well designed it almost melts together with youre wrists... I really doubt that the classic cosmonaut is 2 big 4 TGV
You can't put a 7750 auto on a nato. You'd never get through a door it would stick out that far.
Very nice looking watch, pictures on the internet really don't give any sold information on any watch so you have to se someone handle it.
Fortis for me have been kind of meh but this looks super and i checked the collection of the website and i must say they have alot of likeable watches, the Shoreliner thats all black with gray hands and numbers *drools*
As always a great review!
Your review is priceless. I really appreciate your time to share knowledge and passion. I give to myself Marathon navigator in green colour for my birthday. My ordinary collection appreciated your fantastic review and salute you. Well done Sr.
Thank you so much my friend.
That makes my day to hear about your Navi, enjoy it!!! I am going to wear mine tomorrow in your honour.
Best regards,
TGV
Dude! You have the best video editing. Love that opening! Lol
Thank you so much :D
Extremely kind of you to say.
Best regards,
TGV
Your intro is FAB. Thanks for the review.
Houston! we have a $$$ problem! really nice suggestion. Fortis was a brand that I just heard the name but never seen the timepieces. It's exactly what I am looking for to add to my collection.
TGV! great vid, the Explorer is choice my friend. Digging the Fortis, love having something that you can't just run out and get. Research is important. Watching your channel helps a hell of lot too!
Thank you SN, knowing I help in any way at all makes it all worth it.
Best regards,
TGV
Hey TGV,
It's my birthday today and for the past weeks leading up to it, I've been looking into watches. I want to start a collection and I just turned 20 today. Thank you a lot for your informational videos.
I decided to go with a Tissot Quickster Chronograph with a blue dial. I can't wait to open it later today.
TGV, I understand you released a wallpaper compilation some time ago but did you ever make a music compilation ? I always LOVE the clips you use in your intros and so far Shazam only helped me identify two of them.
love what you do.
Thank you so much Gauthier,
Best regards,
TGV
I've been eyeing this watch for a couple months. It's really attractive in the details and build. I wish the leather band was a bit higher end but thats' easy enough to replace. Do you have the SS bracelet by any chance? would like to see that. And when's the Cockpit 2 review coming out? that's awesome looking as well. I discovered Fortis for myself only recently and am surprised it's not more popular
A Fortis Pilot GMT was my 1st automatic. Only serviced once since 2002. Love it!
Next sleeper brand you should look into is Damasko. I think they are a great competitor to Sinn in terms of tech and over- engineering their timepieces.
So funny, I was just saying the same thing to somebody else. It will happen!
Great minds Jeremy ;-)
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Nice review. Wondering at what time exactly the day and date changes over? I ask because there always seems to be a lot disparity with day/date changeovers when it comes to the 7750.
hey TGV, since I stumbled on your channel 2 months ago I picked up a Seiko skx007k2, srp775, snk809, also an Orient Ray 2. I'm saving for a Sarb033 and I was never a watch guy before any of this lol
TGV, you would like this nugget of info... Sinn was the first automatic self-winding (w/rotar) watch in space... proving that they work in space. Before Sinn was in space, folks were skeptical if a self-winding watch would work.
This is a very attractive watch. Thanks for the highly articulate review.
What I don't like about the watch is that the pushers look to be screw down but as you say they are not.
As always, for you Tim, a pleasure,
Thank you so much my friend :D
Best regards,
TGV
Hi Tim
the watch he received from us is out of our showroom and a prototype. on the go am version the pushers are stewed down.
Best
I really like that watch. I would love it with a manual wind chronograph movment, with display caseback.
Just curious, what was the music used for the intro and then following after that? And another great video as always!
Thunderbirds! The second is an old Bond movie score, I forget which.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
An awesome opening for this episode! Love the Thunderbirds!
awesome job on the intro TGV😀
Thank you Jonathan,
Best regards,
TGV
Absolutely gorgeous watch. Would look great next to an Omega Speedmaster. I agree... wish Fortis used a different movement in this watch... preferably somethin thinner and/or more decorated.
Nice report! How much can we trust the waterproof with a non screw down crown? I had very negatve experiences with my Flightmaster Omega regarding water...
Again thanks for you pasion for watches!!
What kind of strap would go good with a black sieko 5 field watch
Been watching your Chanel for a while now subscribed keep up the excellent content👍
Own a Fortis, amazing quality. I even had someone last week at the Pentagon ask if it was Fortis B-42, which I was wearing. Wish this watch had a thinner and better decorated movement.
I am considering selling some of my cheaper watches to fund a watch in the $1000 range in the near future--this shows in the 500-2000 playlist, but on the Fortis sight it looks like similar watches are upwards of $3k. Can you point me towards where this watch is listed for a price in that range? Separately, any good alternatives between $500-1000?
Great videos as always, really elevating my eye for watches now, a few months into collecting.
As I shouted "Thunderbirds are GO" I was saddened that I was the only one
LOL
Thank you Dan :D
Best regards,
TGV
TGV, are you able to speak on MontBlanc? I don't see much about that brand, but they greatly appeal to me; at least on a visual level.
This fortis really floats my boat on the visuals as well, really strikes a similar pose to the Timewalker Urban. Very appealing design, and I REALLY need a great chronograph in my collection.
Hey TGV,
today I visited a beautiful and extremely interesting exhibition about Patek Philippe in New York city. I would highly recommend you to go there, it's completely free but will only be opened for another 9 days. They flew in about 10 watch related artisans who show their work and tell you a lot about what they are doing.
The exhibition is right on the other side of the Central station if I'm not mistaken.
Best regards
Great review TGV, 🍾🍸
Thank you Bob :D
Best regards,
TGV
TGV awesome video, I think you should make a video about the Seiko SNK809, I know it's a cheap watch, but beautiful and brilliant. Best regards TGV!!!!
I do like the 401.21.12 L.28 variant. Great vid. Thank you sir.
How does this compare to the Omega Speedmaster? Would love to see a comparison video between the classic space watch vs the modern space watch.
I too would love to see a comparison between the Omega Speedmaster and this Fortis Cosmonaut Chronograph.
I really like it. It is a shame that is still too expensive for me. I think that I like it more than the speedmaster and definitely more affordable...maybe in the future
Nice intro, theme music from the thunderbirds, a '60 supernice animated series which i loved so much, very original with Penelope in her pink Rolls Royce, which i remember having and playing a lot with....
Thank you, haha that pink rolls!!! Totally forgot about that, fantastic.
Best regards,
TGV
Great review, but they sent you two without bracelets. Was this on purpose, because they are aware of your criticism of other reviewed bracelets in the past? Are their bracelets sub par in some way?
Is this worth $3,300 ? I suspect they depreciate very quickly . I do like the looks over the Speedmaster. Another great polished video review.
The price is bonkers... for the some money you can easily pick up one of the various speedmaster reference.
Grey dealers have it going for $1800. Soy definitely would knock price to the depreciated level.
Rick Hasemeier 1800 is reasonable. I tool a look on chrono24 and still have to see one under 2500e here in europe
You can buy this same watch new for $1800. It's a fantastic piece and enjoy it more than my Seamaster.
Functional Doc Authorized Dealer price in the US is $1,800. Very reasonable for what you get.
what I like 2 add 2 my expirience with fortis, sent in once a b42 4 service and I got it back with about -/+ 2 secs/day... and I wasnt charged 4 regulating it.. the service was only change the crown sealing ad the caseback sealing ;-) that was relly n1 from them.. I really appreciated that. Better then COSC!!
Thunderbirds theme??! My childhood meets my modern horology obsession!
Haha :D
Gad to hear
Did you like Stingray and Capt. Scarlett too?
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry Omg! Those were amazing as well. Great memories.
I dabbled in those but something about thunderbirds had me glued to the screen. Remember the giant gator episode? :D
I certainly like the look and craftsmanship of that Fortis Tristano. Attention to detail is very clear. I'd love to own one but I think it will have to go onto the long term 'Grail' list for me. Excellent review and I agree that it would look far better on a nato strap. Cheers.
Beautiful watch and great video. My question is this: will this bezel survive years of "tool watch" wear? The unprotected sharp edged ceramic will undoubtedly chip. Thoughts?
Waiting for the Mayweather vs Mcgregor press conference to start, and TGV uploads a video :D.
Nice, keep up the good work.
What time does it start mate and where is it?
Obsidian K9 it's in Brooklyn
LOL, I hope I can keep you entertained until they start shouting at each other again ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Hello TGV,
Two days ago ive ordered a
"Thomas Earnshaw 1805 - model 8011-04"
its a automatic movement watch that cost me €331.
I want to know what your opinion is on this brand in appearance, price (and movement if you chose to get one too).
They have an incredible history im sure you will like!
That thunderbirds intro was awesome!
Your intro,s are pure class. How long does it take you to make one. ? In fact you could make a video of you making a video which would be fascinating.
Excellent idea. I will do a behind the scenes video in the following week.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Would you consider these better made than Oris? That silver dial chrono is just pretty.
TGV, what Fortis did you eventually buy??? I haven't seen an update. Wish it did NOT have a see-through/open case back. Slack an engraved case and make it 1mm thinner!!! If Fortis did that, I'd buy my second Fortis today.
usally in the past u could have a nondisplay case back as optional parts ordered directly from fortis or official dealer and mounted... specially 4 the spacematic and the original flieger... the other option that has non glas casebacks are some divers/marine and all comsonaut modells. I know its abit confusing.. Ive told that fortis about 10 years ago that, that could be organized better... f.e. u chan choose whatever u like better on every modell but they liked it 2 more differentiate the different modells in their line up.
A show on "space going" watches would be pretty interesting!
Excellent idea.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
iv been thinking about getting a fortis just recently after getting a glycine airmen i would like to see them next to each other in collection thanks for the video
Hell of a good-looking chronograph!
Thank you Lloyd, I just put it back on, with an orange nato and it looks the biz!!!
Best regards,
TGV
that bezel is gorgeous. A lovely piece I'd love to get my hands on one!
Good video however the exterior AR coating appears scratched. Should AR coating on outside be avoided?
Just bought one of these on te bracelet, still awaiting delivery. The b42 review is what led me to Fortis as a brand. I believe the new version of this has screw down pushers and crown.
You keep making me buy watches!!!
Kudos
Thanks TGV, after watching your review I ended up getting the PM with the stainless steel bezel.
wonderful alternative to the Speedmaster. seriously considering either the AM or PM with the ceramic bezel.
I could not agree more.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
May I just say your intros get better and better. Great channel, big fan of your work TGV. Thankyou!!
Thank you so much Jorge, deeply flattered.
Best regards,
TGV
Concur on the great channel comment and the Thunderbirds intro was hilarious today. All of the intros are great! Keep up the great work TGV!
Thank you Ron, very much appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
this watch looks great! seems like it does everything one might need for most situations. i think this would make a good entry into the collection of someone who doesnt want to have many watches
I'm new to your channel. Have to tell you , you do a great job Your talented.
Thank you so much, welcome aboard!
Best regards,
TGV
Smiling at the Thunderbirds theme music!
Excited for your review of that other chronograph on the NATO! This watch looks like the marriage of an aviation watch and a chrono, very nicely done. Hope you're enjoying it - on a NATO ;)
This is a very beautiful watch. Not overly done in any way. Just nice.
I bought a Casio A158WA-1 because of this channel. HEY, Ya gotta start somewhere:)
I LOVE THAT WATCH!!! I still wear it.
Wear it with pride my friend.
Thank you Yeshua,
Best regards,
TGV
