He's saying retrofiN with so much confidence over and over but the title says retrofit and comments are saying retrofit.... Seriously....it's a house....not a rocket. I replaced all of my foggy vinyl windows myself with the cheapest replacement panes I could find. Pop four trim pieces off, remove the glass, insert new glass, reinstall trim pieces, done. It's not hard, but window replacement company would have you believe it's like nuclear engineering. A company i had come in to give me a quote on replacing my foggy glass wanted over $1000 per window. I said no thanks and replaced the glass only in about 20 minutes for $56. Ridiculous. It was easier than changing the oil in my car.

      If you are handy and have mechanical ability, a lot of things are easy for those type of people. I happen to be one as well as a 30 year window installer. $800-$1,000 per whole window replacement is not unreasonable. Could you name all the steps involved in that job? Bet you can't. And, $56 per insulated glazed unit (IGU) is ridiculously low.

    • @ggaponn
      @ggaponn 3 месяца назад

      @@brianmueller7913 He probably meant that 800-1000$ is installation only. Given that most contractors just put them over old windows seems to be too much to ask.

    I have a question. Ok so I am having my windows replaces with retro fitted windows. One window is being made larger and adjusted to left about 4" give or take. So framing is being adjusted. Do we need to add flashing? My contractor and window guys are telling me that caulking will be enough. I really think it needs flashing but everyone but the contractor and trades are saying yes it needs flashing.

    Most window and door installers are morons ,I've been in it for 32 years and was taught by old school men.....The biggest problem is no sill pan I bet these dudes don't use them either...It's an absolute must...If you can't seal a window/door properly you shouldn't be installing them.Not even on your own home.

  • @AllForSciFI
    @AllForSciFI 9 месяцев назад

    This is true for an inset window or nail on new construction but for retrofit windows with a z-bar that sits on the stucco in an aluminum window it’s not necessary to put chalking on the frame or jamb of the old window because it’s covered by the z-bar. You just seal the outside and inside.

  • @saebuilders2024
    @saebuilders2024 Год назад +2

    Well said! I have this conversation all the time with clients; however, most of them don't seem to really understand the importance of this. The only thing I would add is that if you have a failing frame or failing window flashing, Retrofit may not solve ALL of your leaking issues. Again, Great Job!

    Useful video, thanks, but I'm looking at Simonton vinyl replacement windows for my stucco house, and a) there isn't an option called "retrofin" and b) neither of their 2 options have any exterior, exposed moulding like you show in this video. Their options are 1) nailfin (wide flange on the exterior but it's designed to be hidden under siding or stucco, or 2) blockfin, which has no exterior flange or moulding (if fits flush with the window opening, it slides into the existing frame, which is left in place, and it's nailed in place to the interior side of the old window frame, through the wallboard, into the studs & header. Are you as confident that this blockfin style of window can be leak free when you install them? Thanks.

      Window manufacturers have what is called a Notice of Acceptance NOA document that shows the proper installation procedure on different types of structure that included the fastening pattern and type. At least we have that in South Florida and our inspections are tied to that. Don’t follow it and you fail inspection. Nailing at all is out of the question.

    We just had a bunch of retrofit windows installed. The installers put no caulking or sealant of any kind on the existing frame or on the new window flange before setting them in. They simply set the window, screwed it in, and then put a ton of silicone around the frame of the window to the stucco.
