Im looking to replace original windows and sliding patio door in my 1980s condo since they have been failed for 15 years. the windows are double hung aprx. 60x40 and 60x20 inch. The door is big at 110x80 iish 3 pane on third floor condo. Was qouted 8000 for anderson door and silver line windows. Was also qouted 6200 for Okna brand door and windows from a diffirent contractor. Im 43 and have no intention of moving anytime soon, but want a successful stress free outcome that will give me no drama. Both places have great install reviews. I never heard of Okna and the reviews are terrible and excellent but I can say the same about Anderson and Silver line
I have yet to hear of Okna Windows myself. You are correct though, you may see both great and bad reviews for both manufacturers...but if you can visit a showroom to see the windows and doors, and if the company to install them for you have great reviews, than I would feel much better about hiring them for my project. Take your time as well, try not to rush something until you feel all of your concerns have been alleviated.
I have a Mobile Window and Screen repair business I will go to your house and repair or repair or manufacturer a new Screen in your driveway with 40 years of experience, 90% of replacement windows do no need to be replaced just replace the old or broken parts , and maintenance them and that window still will last for another 30 years . I live outside of London , Ontario hopping to train more people to repair Windows.
I can understand where you are coming from, but also think of their wood window lines that are not part of the "Renewal" line, they are priced in such a way that makes sense for the materials, glass and hardware used. I always hear when we compete against their quote, that we are a third of their price in most cases. They have to pay for their marketing somehow I suppose. Good products though.
Craziest Andersen quote I’ve ever seen was $20k for 3 double pane vinyl windows, they were fairly big but I was able to give the same client 4 triple pane windows for $12k. I’ve only been in the window sales field for a brief time but I can’t understand how Andersen is making ANY sales with quotes like that. The 20k figure was a discounted price too!
Years ago I got a 12 ft wide double slider wooden Anderson glass doors. I thought that was by far the best window in the house. The outside is covered by a plastic coating of some sort. Well, they use pine wood. They could have used balsa wood, but in an upgrade, went with pine. It rains 2 miles from here, the pine rots. The outside where the plastic coating is cracked, water gets in and rots it. On the inside, condensation from the window drips off the glass down to the pine and rots it. Worst window ever.
Only buy windows from an established brand with a stellar reputation who will be there to service them decades later. My twelve year-old vinyl windows with a lifetime warrantee were made by a company that was bought by another company who no longer makes parts for it.
Oh my, I am sorry to hear that. I agree, there are some window manufacturers that get started, but then close their doors after a decade or so, leaving the customers hanging.
happens all the time and not just windows , roofing and supply houses are constantly being bought and sold for billions of dollars. sometimes they retain the old name for recognition but you'd be surprised

This is All BS ! The windows are only as good as the installer ! Most windows are made the same ! Unless you spend a Fortune Everyday Vinland windows don’t Last !
Makes sense but you make it sound easy. How many manufactures produce cars? No where near as many as the number of window manufactures and all their different lines or series.. Why? Because there's allot of money that's on the table from folks that don't have the time to compare and end up with a subpar product.
I paid $ 10,000 for Harvey Classic double hung windows for my 1951 built cape style house : 21 windows total including 3 basement windows and 2 windows in the garage.
They're going to need to be replaced in 5 years. Any money you saved buying a cheap window will be lost through your HVAC system running 24/7 do to poor insulation.
Anderson asked enough questions to come up with my homes value then based the price of my windows from that number. Stupid me, apparently it’s common knowledge that windows should cost what 20% of your homes value is. Not 20% over the cost to produce and installation which is a good and fair profit margin. Literally snake oil BS
A salesman from a local installer came to my house and quoted me $9300 for 7 Duralast sliding Windows. I think Sunrise Windows makes them. Any experience with Duralast windows? Thanks
Not yet, I would have to see if there are any dealers of those windows in this area. Are the windows quoted vinyl? Also, is it for a full tear out, or retro replacement?
What about in smaller basement type hopper windows? I'm looking to replace these myself and trying to get a decent window. There are some available at the big box stores, but they don't really seem super high quality. Will window dealers be able to provide a quality small basement window by like Pella/Andersen, etc.? Or does it not matter so much with these smaller windows.
I'm looking at GenTek Signature Elite Windows but I'm concerned that there does not seem to be a lot of data out there and I found a few really bad complaints. On paper, they look like great windows.

My house was built in 1971 with 27 windows. 24 of which are double hung the other 3 are very large windows that do not open. I can’t imagine the quotes I would get to replace them. I live in NJ.
All depends on what brand and style of window you get quoted for. Vinyl will come in around 1000 dollars an opening installed. Fiberglass will be more like 1500-1800 average each, and wood windows would come in at the highest at 2000-2500 per opening. Also, all about the type of glass and warranty received with these windows, and obviously who is installing the windows for you.
I just got a quote to replace a 92" x 55" bow window in my house from Renewal by Anderson. They want $15,000 for a dual-pane, composite-frame window.. Window World wants $9,330 for a triple-pane (vinyl) window. Guess which one I'm going with?
They do, but when you have salesman and installers out there under measuring for fit then a proper fitting window is more important. Always have the installer measure for tightest fit.
The USA is still a long way from European window technology with the tilt and side opening function. Only through European companies that are now also expanding in the U.S. for the American market is the U.S. learning.

I got a so-so. The crew was 5 Spanish speaking men which was a concern as they obviously ran into a problem with installation of the bow window but, since I don't understand Spanish, no clue what the issue is. The 5 double-hung windows were installed in 5 hours the previous day but the bow took 4 hours the next day. With full frame installation, very few of the mitered corners of the casings were without gaps and the nail pinner left additional dings in the wood that rules out staining as I'll now have to fill, sand, and paint the casings. The bow extends further out from the brick than the original and nothing covers/seals the bare wood underneath and there is foam insulation squeeze out between the brick and the bottom of the bow. Again, it's not all about the quality of the product.
