Our country DID try to get rid of the electoral college TWICE, but failed both times because to some people (specifically senators in the south) it is the only way they feel represented.
It's an antiquated idea that needs to be abandoned ASAP.

Making every vote count the same is called “proportional representation”. It’s how voting works in Germany; the system was put in place after World War II to ensure that a dictator could never take power there again. And it worked so well, we here in NZ copied it.
It does almost inevitably lead to coalition politics: you get a range of political parties in Parliament, none with a clear majority, so they need to figure out how to work together to get things done. But most of us see that as a feature, not a bug.
Time for the US to give it a try?

Um, let's be honest - if the founding fathers had known about Trump, they would have bailed on representative democracy altogether. Credit where credit is due - far too many Americans chose someone who was blatantly horrible from day one.
Would they? What's with the Electoral College then? What's with the Byzantine method of choosing a President where the fascists tried all 6 methods of overturning an Election? Did you know that Senators used to be appointed, not elected? Do you know what Amendment changed that? I got to say this, every night Seth brings his a-game in summarizing the incredible political and news events that we are experiencing in the US today. As a 63-year-old liberal white guy living in the middle of a red state, in the middle of the Midwest, I appreciate Seth's commentary everyday... Seth and his writers definitely know what the hell is going on, and wrong, with this country and they point it out to us every night on national teevee! Another thing I gotta admit is that before the pandemic I really didn't watch this show much. But as a nurse working overtime in a large urban hospital during this entire COVID pandemic I would come home at night, or in the morning, and before I went to sleep I would listen to Seth and Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah as each one of them told me how this country was so fucked up, and what we needed to do to fix it...with humor! I have literally watched people die from covid because they wouldn't get vaccine which could have protected them, because Trump and his scumbag co-conspirators at Fox News kept telling people they couldn't trust the vaccine, even though every goddamn one of them had been vaccinated as soon as possible. I hate these Trump MAGAt Republicans with the heat of 1,000 Suns. It gave me hope that we might be able to beat these fascists in my lifetime! Kudos to you Seth Meyers for bringing this to us every night...
