All the nominees this year were brilliant, but The english patient was more than a simple beautiful Movie. It's a Masterpiece and a huge thanks to the academy for attisting it.
It was all thanks to a man that we lost who produced the following: "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" from United Artists Pictures, "Amadeus" from Orion Pictures, and "The English Patient" from Miramax Films. In Memory of Saul Zaentz (1924-2014) Rest In Peace, Friend.
Zakaria Benkhadda Aw, Thank U So Much. I began 2 realize that without Saul Zaentz, those 3 films would've never won best picture. Plus, Oscar-winning actor and producer, Michael Douglas, gave him an Irving G. Thalberg award, and won an Oscar for co-producing "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" with the late Saul Zaentz.
Thank you for agreeing with me. I'm glad The English Patient won and buried the competition 9 out of 12 it's just to bad Kristin Scott Thomas didn't win best actress
@Jeepman89 I'm russian, and what? I love this film deeply. I love Ralf madly. You isn't right. It's romantic and tragic movie. Boring!?!!!! Omg, do you love somebody!?
There's so much venomous hatred towards The English Patient. I really don't think anyone with a brain could honestly call it a terrible film. It's impeccably well made and intellectually written, the craftsmanship involved is about as good as any of us are likely to see in a motion picture. If you think something else should have won, surely you can be mature enough to realise that it's not the movie's fault that it won best picture. I feel bad for people that haven't had the pleasure of enjoying this movie, you're really missing out on something special and profound.
yeah bro because the oscar voters understand about films a lot,to the point that many of them have already openly admited that didn't saw the best picture winner, but only voted on it because it was politically correct. link of the news if you're doubting about it:www.cinemablend.com/new/Two-Oscar-Voters-Admit-They-Didn-t-Watch-12-Years-Slave-Voted-It-Anyway-41981.html
I agree with you because nowadays people are making a fuss about The English Patient as it being the Best Picture over Fargo. I see that all over the Internet and I was horrified. I don't mind if Fargo won which is a great film but that doesn't mean that people have to be themselves acting like retards and not learning from film. It is an epic romantic war film. One little problem is that some scenes are slow but thats fine with me. Films are slow which wouldn't make any different to 2001 a space odyssey because that is a great slow film because it showed a lot which influenced Spielberg to become a filmmaker. As a result, The English Patient deserves Best Picture because of great story, acting, setting, score, cinematography, the novel, everything. For example, Birdman won Best Picture over Boyhood which is a great film but people never throw fits, but The English Patient and Fargo, people do throw fits. It seems like people never view great films properly.
Well said, Dude123. Sad. We don't see that sort of craftsmanship and intellectual writing in award winning films anymore, and we don't have the audience that appreciate such work like this. It's so sad. I almost quit making films because I saw that the films people loved were works I wasn't interested in making. Then I started seeing great films again at top tier films festivals like Toronto and I was inspired again. The film industry need more of The English Patient and The Remains of the Day and the like...
The English Patient moved me to cry. Fargo moved me to laugh. The English Patient was breathtaking in every aspect imaginable. Fargo was great in every aspect. They're both terrific movies, but for me, The English Patient deserved to win. I just think it's overall a better movie.
#TheEnglishPatient (more than 100%) deserved it; acting, directing, writing, cinematography, costumes, editing, music, everything is at its BEST! It won 9 out of 12 nominations! It's EPIC story! A MASTERPIECE without a doubt. I love #Fargo too but for #BestPicture OSCAR, "THE ENGLISH PATIENT" is definitely the IRREPLACEABLE choice and OSCAR did it right for 1996!
+mounir maged Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and choosing the BEST among all great movies is doubtlessly subjective. I respect your opinion. And at the end of the day, all we know is that "The English Patient" won not only OSCAR for 'Best Picture', also won Golden Globe, BAFTA, Producers Guild of America Award, Directors Guild of America Award, even Grammy Award for it's breathtaking score, and many more. It's not only loved by critics globally; also loved by fans worldwide. (Of course, "Fargo" was loved by both critics and fans: my point is "The English Patient" was chosen not only by OSCAR; it dominated more than 80% of movie awards for the year 1996). Btw, I also enjoy TV series version of Fargo, too. Haven't watched Season 2 yet but Season 1, hands down, one of the Best Limited Series on TV; period.
+mounir maged You're welcome. As a movie-fanatic, I always listen and respect other people's opinions. Back in 2000, The Washington Post chose "Dancer in the Dark" as Best Film of the year 2000, but the other equally well-respected magazine (I think it's Time magazine) chose Von Trier's movie as Worst Film of the year 2000. Everyone is a critic and as I already told you, everyone can be entitled to his or her opinion and it's not wrong of sticking to it 'til the end (because it's not about theory of Physics or equations of Chemistry; it's movie, it's art). For you and a lot of people out there, it's overrated and I do believe a lot of people will agree with you. And, yes, "The English Patient" is a masterpiece (for me) and I believe there will also be a lot of people out there who agree my opinion, too.
+mounir maged I always feel like it whenever my most favorite one in the nominees lost (I told myself and my friends: "I'll never watch OSCAR again!"); but every year whenever the Oscar season is coming, I can't help but waiting and feeling butterflies who will win Golden Globe, who will get SAG, who will take BAFTA home, and oh boy, who will get the OSCAR nods and blah blah blah and I'm in that circle all over again. (Happy when my favorite one won; angry and sad when my favorite one lost). Old habits die hard, I think.
Yes, young guys don't love classic movies like The english patient, Dances with wolves, Driving Miss Daisy, etc etc........but this doesn't signifies that these films are horrible or undeserving. The English patient is a classic, adorable film...with a great cast and a perfect direction.
I haven't seen it since I was 13, it was the start of my movie loving life, but I remember thinking it was really cool. It had a great epic love story feel that was popular in older films.
Well deserved for The English Patient. What a beautiful film, such a masterpiece. My favorite Best Picture winner of 1990s with Schindler's List I am glad Fargo didn't win
R.I.P Saul Zaentz. He also produced Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which both won best picture, so that says something about how good he was in the film industry.
The English Patient is a typical Oscar Winner Picture. Great production, great cast, beautiful cinematography, costum design, music,... Like previous winners like Gandhi, Out of Africa, Amadeus, The Last Emperor And others. No regrets. But... I Think The REAL Best Picture of these year was Secrets and Líes, the masterpierce of Mike Leigh. Exceptional directing, cast and writing.
to anyone who's even complaining about this film's legth or anything at all, please keep your opinion for yourself. there hasn't been a more well deserved win in the history of the oscars AND the english patient deserves every oscar it was nominated for and won.
Say whatever yall want. English patient deserved it, such one hell of a movie. And yeah, i agree, it can be boring for some. Everyone doesn't share same taste
Of all the films that did NOT deserve the Oscar for Best Picture, The english patient is the only one that deservedly won several Oscars. Best Cinematography, Best Original score and Best Film editing
Can anybody say anything else besides "Fargo should have won"? C'mon, Fargo is surely a great movie, but The English Patient deserved to win all its 9 oscars! Is such an amazing movie, can anybody see that?
I mean secret & lies is a far superior film than all of them. But it was a relatively small UK production with not much of an active campaign or even a real U.S distribution plan so it pretty much slips through the cracks under the heavyweight of monsters like Weinstein and Zaest
Hey Oscars! I love how you've posted the whole ceremony. I realize this is something you added later. Very clever. Could you add the CLOSING for the 69th Academy Awards® ceremony? Thanks!
@lolaposen actually Ralph was saying "Hello Ivanov Babes" which was a show he was doing at the time and the other says "Hello Becky" who was his assistant. I hope that clears it up.
Okay one question for the haters. Do you take issue with The English Patient winning any of its other awards that evening. If the answer is no, then its nonsensical that it shouldn't get BP too. And I do like Fargo

I'm sorry, you are right. But arrogant and rude people make me a hysterical person. I couldn't resist and I replied to this presumptious and slanderer boy. I reached his level and this is regrettable . But fortunately the discussion with him is ended.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus' role in NBC's Emmy winning long running hit sitcom Seinfeld (1989-1998) not only made her famous, funny and smart, but also shapely, sexy, cool and feminine too.
I cant believe that you and I are actuely agreeing on something. Yah either Fargo or Jerry Maguire, I cant pick. In addition Tom Cruise should have won best actor instead of Geoffry Rush.
Al Pacino is SOOOOO beautiful
Pacino looks incredibly handsome
But he is short, he would not get very far on any dating apps these days, he is under 5 ft

Richard Cleveland But Juliette Binoche won Best Supporting Actress for her role as "Hana" in "The English Patient."
I don't understand the hate for the English Patient, one of my favorite movie.
It's a well written, beautifully shot, decent directing. It's a really good film. My main problem with it though is it's to long
The English Patient is good but Fargo is Fargo
@Jeepman89 you are a heartless idiot
@Jeepman89 I'm russian, and what? I love this film deeply. I love Ralf madly. You isn't right. It's romantic and tragic movie. Boring!?!!!! Omg, do you love somebody!?
@Jeepman89 please, sorry....but it's tooooo deep story for me. I don't want to hurt you, understand. How old are you?

Lol honestly! It's a beautifully produced film. Yes, fargo was the better film, but English Patient's win is nothing to scoff at.
I agree with you because nowadays people are making a fuss about The English Patient as it being the Best Picture over Fargo. I see that all over the Internet and I was horrified. Let's just hope he is giving it
This movie is a true masterpiece... A total perfection... How can anyone deny it ?
@Nick Barcheck Fargo is nothing compared to this brother
@Nick Barcheck fck off then xd
I watched it yesterday.... what a trash...
Fargo was a lot better and should have won.
The English patient is a perfect cure for insomnia. Nothing else
The English Patient moved me to cry. Fargo moved me to laugh. The English Patient was breathtaking in every aspect imaginable. Fargo was great in every aspect. They're both terrific movies, but for me, The English Patient deserved to win. I just think it's overall a better movie.
No
@carlossantiagoclaros99 Fargo is a made-up story.
The English Patient = Masterpiece
RIP Saul Zaentz (February 28, 1921 - January 3, 2014), aged 92
You will be remembered as a legend.
May he rot in hell for what he did to CCR
Not by the Tolkien family
Pacino Deserves a nomination for donnie brasco in 1997!
The only film has been Oscar nominated for best adapted screenplay in 1998.
my favourite film.............so tragic and romantic.....cry every time i see it.
i came here to admire al pacino beauty because he's insane i love him

Pacino looking fine as hell at 57...
"The English Patient" is awesome!! I'm watching it now.

Rebecca Hopkins It is a good film, but is it better than “Ghost” or “Goodfellas” no.
True
The best picture of that year, indeed. A classic film.

One of my favorite movies!!!!!
Just watched it last night, really enjoyed it even though it's almost 3 hrs long, you're glad it's not over yet when you're watching
same after 20 years watched lst night!
Well deserved for The English Patient. What a beautiful film, such a masterpiece. My favorite Best Picture winner of 1990s with Schindler's List
I am glad Fargo didn't win
25 years old Al Pacino....
Man Al Pacino looks so hot😩
R.I.P Saul Zaentz. He also produced Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which both won best picture, so that says something about how good he was in the film industry.
He was also a terrible person who only had a career in film in the first place from exploiting the work and labour of CCR
Al Pachino should play Robert Downey Jr's father in a movie
2:55 - 3:00 Ralph Fiennes
What was written on the cards Ralph Fiennes was holding up at 2:55?
Kyle Oxenham “Hello Ivanov Babes ❤️ & Hello Ricky ❤️”

Al Pacino is so sexy.... I love you AL!!!! 알 파치노 잘생긴 거 미쳤다ㅠㅠㅠ
true masterpiece this one.
When Al Pacino giving you the Oscar !!
that was literally the first time i've seen pacino smile.
He smiles a lot actually.
you probably haven't seen a lot of Pacino because he smiles almost all the time
Got to see it at the theater. It helps to have some knowledge about WW2 before you watch it.
The English Patient.

The reason why I liked this film because of the Music
What's the title of the track played at 1:23?
@luke92dbz they always play music from a film that wins an oscar. so the song they played is from the english patient, presumably the theme
This movie makes achieve the feat of judging ourselves.
A lot a people really need a happy ending. Two deaths and a truck ride may not work. Fantastic movie.
Was that Harvey Weinstein congratulating kissing Saul in the audience.?
lol what was Ralph Fiennes holding up at 2:57
Can anybody make out what does it say on Ralph Fiennes paper?
I can't see
