TED WAS A GENIUS.
I need to listen to all of his videos again.
Steve Vai was teaching me some theory over via email ten years ago (after my spine injury) and he told me if you only have one book, buy Ted Greene's Chord Theory. Since I couldn't play like I had for over 30 years due to my injury, I wanted to be able to write what I heard in my head because I couldn't play it. CHORD CHEMISTRY is the gift that keeps on giving. The fretboard opened up in ways I'd NEVER imagined it in 30 years and I played everything except jazz and classical.
EDIT: Now I write jazz and classical, even though I cannot play my pieces myself. Go figure.
I hope you’re well. I’m sorry to read about your injuries. I’m a satriani fan, for some reason I always thought you had to choose satriani or vai but not both. Even though they’re friends and satriani gave vai some instruction. Strange that I thought that, however I just found out about Ted Greene hearing Guthrie Govan talking about him in a video. I do hope you continue to find joy in your music. God bless!!
I think Ted could have been a star, but I don't think he was interested. Ironically, today he's a legend.
He sure is a amazing player ...unmatched sound and voicings and a sweet guy to boot ...
It's curious, but i would like to understand why he is that famous if there are so little recordings of his playing. Even so, he's great! And all the educational material he left is wonderful.
He's not that famous Manu, only among guitarists because of his great books.
Oh, that's very true.
Anyway, could you recommend me some of his books?
Knowledge of the guitar and his understanding of music. Chord Chemistry is a book he wrote on theory and scales etc. He was a professor and a theorist teacher .
One is seldom privileged to watch a genius in any field.
No sir… the versatility of Ted Greene is unmatched
That's a very sweet tone Ted gets...very warm and jazzy! Beautiful. R.I.P. Ted.
Wonderful. I am guessing that Ted had characteristics of many brilliant people...and many of the rest of us. Introverted, Obsessive....It seems to me that he was nicely at peace with himself. Fascinating character....really enjoying the videos. I have my 1970's copy of Chord Chemistry.
So glad we have these videos of Ted!
Ted knows more chords than guitar George.
Who you think taught George all that shit?
Hey, go easy on George! He's got a day time job, he's doing alright!!
@@kevindean1327 hahahah nice one but you're thinking of Harry.
@@kevindean1327 lol
@@musterionsurly You're right! But Harry doesn't mind!!
How cool are the war patterns on Ted's fingerboard. He used every inch of the neck making such beautiful music. I'm grateful to be able to watch these wonderful videos.
Fantastic insights from a true master. RIP, Ted.
Wow ... That is a amazing video ... Love to have my 63 Tele back.... Ted , is just an incredible player ,,, He out does others due to his humbling personality ...such a clever sweet man . I thank you so so much for this video ..Its so cool to see his personality and then rich sounds come out
Cheers

A Tele has such a beautiful sound if it doesn't get mucked up somehow. He's using a humbucking pickup and yet the sound is pure Tele, except that he's getting a very warm sound on the bass string without affecting the shimmer in the treble. Magic.
I really enjoyed this up close look at Ted's Tele. The C 6th style steel guitar chords were beautiful!
Its like, "what genre was Ted?"
"Beautiful."
Still working on his hand written lessons from the 70's lol BRILLIANT MAN! So patient.
ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF HIS INSTRUMENTS TONE, RANGE
I GOT 'CHORD CHEMISTRY' WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT
STILL WORK IT, TIME TO TIME
THANK YOU TED GREENE

My my isn;t it real.....What a player and fine fine person. Just once in a million years a person comes along like Ted Greene... we are so fortunate to have this technology to listen and smile at these videos. What a feast as always Cheers and thank you

Love the classical head movement aiding Ted's on the vibrato @1:05. What an artisan.
Also VERY interesting to see that he's using a "modern" style tele bridge on his '54 tele.
Thank you for this great post!
P.S, for that matter I'll bet if he'd lived long enough to discover the Fender Noiseless pickups that he would have sounded even better still. As you can see here in this video he even makes a comment about the typical fender single coil sound when he flips the switch and you hear the 60 cycle hum without actually calling it noise. Because of that I believe he would have installed them in his guitar and thought the Noiseless pickups to be a jazz players dream come true.
oh why, oh why, can't people like him, live forever...
I agree, for some reason people like Ted live short lives but make a huge contribution while they are here.
People like him with that type of otherworldly talent are like aliens.
This man is a national treasure.
..pure love...thank you so much Ted...
Is this the same Ted Greene that had a book called "Chord Chemistry"? The Tele with a humbucker in the middle suggests it is. I just put an old Matsumoku Vantage VP795 back together. I think a couple magnets rolled when I wax potted the non original Ibanez Super 80. The neck pick up is very thin and bright, but it mixes with athe Seymour Duncan JB so well I will leave it for now. The rhythm pup alone is thin and nasty, but blended it is awesome. It plays like a 1970s Les Paul. My Tele is a 62.
I bought " Chord Chemistry " on a hunch in '88.Golden ticket for me, changed my life.
Excellent, as usual, thank you very much!!
Such a lovely and seemingly humble gentelman also.. ... leaning so much from him. I`m sad that he`s gone....
Incredible insight (as always)...

there's Nothing it Can't do !
... glad to hear i'm not the only one who describes Fender sound as "glassy"
Very few explain guitar playing and give deep insight like Ted does in this video posted here. You get an idea about how fast his mind works just from this. The gift is here. RIP,Ted.
@00Jackacid I am running an Estey M15A some idiot had castrated back to use EL84s made by Sovtek. The B+ is just right to rewire the sockets for 6973 tubes and you essentially have a Magna Magnatone 480 which is a 280 with reverb. I just redid the M15A for the original 7189As then went into the 1st pre stage(s) and bumped the plate voltage and K R for more gain. I too remember the days when a 1950 Broadcaster was just used gear, same with 59LPs, or anything else barring a D'Angelico.
the play is so smooth
I want a telecaster just like Ted
I named my kitten after Ted , I love him that much :)
@Satchmoeddie I also just picked up a Guild Roy Buchanan Tele style guitar. It is a bit warmer and less piercingly bright as an early 50s Tele. I have a 62 I really love and a 5o that plays nice, but not as nice as the 62. Again these were just "used guitars in the late 1970s/early 80s. I can build a SS amp that is almost as great sounding as a tube amp, but I may slide a 12AX7 in at a nonlinear low plate voltage and cheat a little bit. Since 1977 I picked up a couple tricks.
Yeah that is THE TED GREENE who wrote Chord Chemistry. I will kick the crap out of whoever swiped the book from me, and break their fingers. Ted had as many pickups as can be crammed between the bridge and neck on a Les Paul, and a forest of mini toggle switches. My main 1980s (1977) used Les Paul has 4 sub minis, a Kahler, DiMarzios and better caps than 70s Gibson used. Now I wind my own pups, and do vacuum forming of plastic covers. I wish I could stamp metal pick up parts!~!
How nice to see a hardcore jazz master like Ted Greene play a Telecaster. I own an expensive hollowbody guitar, which sounds great, but I also play a Tele strung with flatwound jazz strings, with a Fender Twin, and it sounds very good for jazz, if you set it up right in terms of tone controls, etc. Sure a shame that we lost Ted... the guitar world is poorer for his passing.
i love the drop A tuning
Yeah, Yeah, we get it. He'd sound great through anything. That's not the point. No matter how good someone is, the type of amp they play through will make a difference in the sound they're trying to get. I'm sure as amazing as Ted was; that 90% of his sound was from his hands and technique but the other 10% will be in his guitar and amp.Your comment did not erase the relevance of my statement and I still stand by it. Yes he sounds amazing. I'd just like to hear him through a Roland Jazz Chorus.
If he handed me his guitar i would just shake my head and hand it back.
That was amazing.
What amp is he using?
if only i could have discovered him while he was alive so that i could have gotten lessons from this beautiful man
My pick ups are always as low in teh body as they can go :-) glad to see I'm not the only one. What a great tone he gets, wish I could have seen him performing live.
I have a 480 in the back of a closet. They are about like the M15A. I like the 6973 tube the 280/480 used a whole lot. I found that 8 of them can use a Marshall 100 watt OT! It runs at around 80-87 watts! 94 or so with higher B+, and over 100 ultralinear with a Hammond 120 watt 1900 ohm OT! Supros and other Valcos used the 6973 a lot. The 7189A is similar in it is a super hi fi version of an EL84 that you can goose the B+ on a lot! An M15A is 2 M10As! Good old Magna est1936.
Can someone tell me how to hold your guitar like that?
I can't quite make out what he said about thick strings and the pickup to get a full sound. Can anyone else make out what he said exactly?
@geoffreyefloyd im fairly sure its a mid 60's blackface vibrolux reverb, you could find one for about 2 grand on Ebay... IMO the nicest sounding clean amp ever just after its older brother the late 50's tweed vibrolux, but the addition of the reverb function, and extra 25 watts and more channels could make the blackface a winner, it's certainly a better all rounder... hope this info helped, but keep in mind im not 100% sure that it is a vibrolux, but i do know Ted did use one quite a lot.
I was fortunate enough to have owned and played through a Vibroluxe Reverb amp like that one many years ago. They are AWESOME amplifiers, and this one sounds like my old one.
This is a question; not a criticism. Isn't it possible now days to clear up the audio on these older videos? I think they would be easier to follow and be more enjoyable without all the old fashioned hiss etc. Maybe it takes a lot more effort and expensive gear than I realize. Really love Ted and his music. Thanks for making it available.
The Robert Adams of Jazz guitar
Is it a CABD?
what is that voicing he plays at end of 3:11? right before the G#EF#BD#
Whatever he was using, I'll bet he would have sounded amazing through a Roland Jazz Chorus.
Back in the 60s and 70s people altered their guitars to get what they wanted out of them..they didn't care about it being pristine/unaltered vintage..almost everyone I knew who was a working musician and played a tele would drop a humbucker in the neck position..
That's what I've been telling people for years. Don't get the pickups too close to the strings. It makes for a harsh tone.
Wow this is really ...We will miss him
Wouldn't you think a Roland Jazz Chorus should be an obvious choice. These damn things were quite literally "made" for jazz.
the best!
@dwebster50 that means ted greene has not come around yet. humans have not been around for a million years.
@00Jackacid
Solid state amps are for people who either can't afford a tube amp, or prefer the sound over a tube amp.
it is a vibrolux reverb 2 - 10's 35 watts or so
Fairly sure it's a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Great amps!
So what do you think people? Clearly Ted favoured the Vibrolux but aside from that, what springs to mind as a great amp for jazz?
what kind of pickups is he using?
According to the forums over at the Ted Greene web site they were probably DiMarzio Duo-Sonic humbuckers. However, the Duo-Sonic is essentially the super distortion pickup which does not produce the tone he's getting. The fact that he screws the pickups down so far into the body may be why he gets a clean sound out of a distortion pickup.
If Ted had lived long enough so he could have discovered Fender's Noiseless N3 and Vintage Noiseless pickups; I wonder if he would have installed them in his Esquire and I also wonder what he would have had to say about them. This guy was born to play Fender's American Deluxe Telecaster with the noiseless pickups. I the would have blown his mind as much as his playing blows his fans minds. I'd think that zero 60 cycle hum would be a jazz pro's dream come true.
what amp is that? I can't read the logo.
Looks like fender twin reverb
hes playing an esquire not a tele
@sniperviper91 thx man
Can I get that "BUZZ" in The Ted Greene Set Up? Tools? Work Bench? Strobe Tuner? Where?
The cats “cat”!
very cool guy
Who are the 29 people who disliked this and why are they terrible humans
Telly Spank 4:32
Just either get an American Deluxe Telecaster with Vintage Noiseless pickups or install them in your current guitar. They sound amazing by their own single coil selves or in an HSS configuration. If you haven't heard of them before, they are the only pickups on the planet that has zero 60-cycle hum for the only "truly" noiseless pickup on the planet. I would think this should be standard for ALL jazz players no matter what guitar they play. No noise & no fuss. This should be a no brainer.
does someone know if it's a fender reverb or vibrolux?
Ted is the coolest man, anyone know the song at 5:25?
there will never be another you i guess
I think it’s just a progression, but it’s hip! Every voice moves melodically. I’d be happy to play the bassline alone.
I wonder if it's a Deluxe Reverb...
You ain’t a real jazzer til you drop down the neck pickup
I literally just found this out today, lol.
I think, he was a fantastic teacher. But, to be honest, he maybe was the best guitar player ever.
better to set the bass end of the pickup LOWER- that's where the heaviest signals are.
Vibrolux Reverb
Too much sparkle
nah, its clearly a Fender Vibroverb
yah the versatility is unmatched but the fucking crowd has to have taste
Sin querer hace algún tiempo puse el dislike número 17, pongo like ahora, mala mia jeje
It sounds like a cheap Marshall to me... :P
Obviously a Fender.
awful buzzing man !!....3mins !!....
+Petre .W. Yeah, but Ted was doing that to make a point-he turned it up so it would buzz so he could show the student what it sounds like when you do that. If you take a standard Tele and have a tech shield and ground it, you should be able to play it next to a popcorn machine with no problem ;-)
Daniel Stoddart Have to watch again, but was he taking in the gullible ??..
+Petre .W. At one point he holds the guitar out away from himself toward the A/C to show the student (they're talking about pickups and setup) how much it picks up electronic noise. At another point he holds the guitar flat and if you look closely you can see how his neck pickup is dropped down so far, it's sunken below the body.
Daniel Stoddart I don't like it when they show bollocks !!,,,,,,,just been trying to look at setting acoustic and neck w/e.....you have to work through it !!!....
Fix your mike the sound I hear SUCKS
You are hearing wrong.
nah there is deffo alot of hiss and background noise which is distracting from the conversation/playing. he aint hearing wrong.
it was made in 98 with 1998 mics
you guys realize that this video is 20 years old.... be happy he posted this at all great content
If it had been 1958 it should have still been quieter. It's not an audio issue w/ mics. I'm listening to it w/ good studio headphones. That annoying sound is either a room fan or window AC unit. He's wearing a "summer shirt" so,...
Zzzzzz static noise of fenders make me sick + very drowned sound is not nice for a telecaster, but anyway thanks for sharing ted´s opinion. Jazz should be played on big guitars in my opinion
What did he do to his neck pickup?
