The genius playing Bossa Nova and then transforming the tune to the Paul McCartney classic Eleanor Rigby. I think Paul McCartney would be proud of this version among the thousands of versions of this classic tune. Ted, of course makes it swing with a capitol "S" Special thanks to my friends Jeff Stocks and Ms. Barbara Franklin. Please visit www.TedGreene.com for lessons, tabs, music galore...you will not be disappointed.

i met him soon before he died, he was awesome and the most beautiful thing i heard about him was instead of playing a lot of gigs he spent a lot of time helping homeless people get fed. hes one of the most fascinating people ive ever met.
One important thing is that he doesn’t reharmonise the song just to reharmonise it and thus show his knowledge of harmony, but he does it to express the original feeling of this song - using new ways. He doesn’t use the song to show his abilities but he serves the song the best he knows. This is really incredible.
Yes! This is a huge deal.
Jacob Collier?
@@emfox6280 Yes indeed.Although I admire Jacob’s incredible talent the difference between his approach and that of Ted Greene could hardly be bigger. Any music is just a toy for Jacob; he could build an incredible castle out of one or two Lego bricks but the musical paths of Mr Green are completely different. I deeply admire both for different reasons but if I had to choose I would choose Mr Greene.
No… actually he said after this performance, ‘Did y’all notice my reharmonizing? I just do it ta do it, know what I mean??? for no other reason at all. Does that make me weird?’
See? Told ya so. If it has quotation marks around it, that means it’s true.
@@blmrgtr Thanks for your reply.I didn’t notice that indeed! That’s incredible , but still I insist on what I said . Because his reharmonisations are incredibly sublime!
it's like he's the only one who can really play a guitar. everyone is just faking it....
mhmm
@SRV1 i mean, Ted Greene had a pretty comprehensive understanding of harmonic theory. Not saying it's strictly necessary if you want to play some wailing blues, but it probably helps a lot for what Greene did
@@cur_mudge a VERY comprehensive understanding....

Ted Greene might be the only reason I would invent a time machine, just to go back in time and have a beer with him !
I'll never forget when I eventually got to the back pages of Chord Chemistry and found his diagrams for E-gads and D-molished. This video is the first time I have ever heard what Ted played like.
Lenny Breaux and Ted Greene were into this extraterrestrial vamping that was beautiful
Two pillars among guitarists
John McLaughlins love of this man brought me here ! Wow. Etherial for sure.
Every truly great player knows and reveres Ted Greene and Lenny Breau. No matter what genre. These guys had some extra gift of harmony. It is a shame that not more recordings of Ted exist. I feel he was just happy teaching, learning and playing.
I don't know about greatest or best but I am convinced he was the most harmonically advanced guitarist who ever lived.
Arguably the greatest.
I agree - & also Allan Holdsworth.
agree 100%..... this man's picture should be next to the word harmony. Not one mm of subterfuge. it's all about the song and making sure the melody and harmony are to the max. Not a show-off, just about doing justice to any song. like he wanted to do what a full band could, but just with a guitar. What a loss....gone too soon RIP maestro
I don't think any one player can be credibly labelled "the Greatest". There are simply to many possible ways to express emotion through this instrument. But a supreme master of harmony he certainly was.
The more I learn about Ted Greene the more I admire him. He is so humble and gentle, yet he is so far advanced in music: the understanding of it as well as playing. What a soul.
he really makes me want to improve in all aspects of playing
+mark frankel Mark, that was Ted's entire view...he was a mentor, and teacher to all the best players in the states. In fact he abandoned his own musical career to become a teacher. Anyone who had chops in California were among his students.....from heavy metal players to the top well known jazz players and in-between. Check out his tribute site and you will find hundreds of lessons and tabs for his playing.....you will also meet some of his students who all share their personal lessons, tabs, etc. Thanks RC
No one understood, played and felt it like Ted. ...Humbling, inspiring......3 THUMBS DOWN- REALLY!!?? Wake up!!
No weird tunings. Just a drop D. A beautiful soul expressing it with his music.
Where all guitarists end up one day. Staring at Ted playing the most full-bodied and beautiful guitar music there ever was and ever will be.
Every note should be hanging in the Louvre ...
i think that the thing which delivers the greatness of this amazing man, is the comments in here: it's the only video i have ever seen in which there are no arguments or trolling, because everybody can see that these are meaningless in the presence of this beautiful sounds Ted creates
I often wonder what it must it have felt like to spend a day as Ted Greene, hearing all those wonderful harmonic possibilities in every simple melody that came floating by? Overwhelming for the mere mortal I would think - you would need to be a genius like Ted to deal with all those incredible sensations and choices and then translate them into your own music at will for the greater good of everyone! Thank you for posting this!
Unparalleled genius...I heard a clip from his website where he demonstrates to a radio dj one of his favorite eras in music and it was baroque and Ted just starts improvising it on the fly....who does that?
Also his book titled Modern Chord Progressions is daunting ..2 years and I only got 2 pages down but so worth it !!
Greatest player of all time...to me.
He is to me as well.
His knowledge of music is astounding. Voicings...harmony etc...just awesome. I took lessons and he would just blow me away
He said he is trying to get somewhere and he is following where the music takes him to get there and sometimes the music doesn’t go there. His improvisation skills are genius level.
I can't think of a 'WOW' word that would be good enough to describe this. It's quite an experience for sure.
he nearly always gets a tear from me
Love that consistent body/neck vibrato he does, really turns the guitar into a voice.
" Infinity .. The ( M ) usic ". .. Great Sounds Very Special Musician. .. Nice One ... ☺😊😀/💙💙💙/👍👌👏👋
Ted opened so many new doors to the house of guitar. He also left a bunch of extra keys around for people to try on the locks that remain. So did George Van Eps. He was Ted's teacher for awhile.
My breath gets taken away every time I listen to Ted. Everything is always so fresh, exciting, emotional and sincere which truly represents the man and his relationship to his music.
jesus this is.fucking incredible
I bought his album when it came out in 77 and always thought he was playing through a Leslie speaker. I can see here he is just using an amp with some reverb. The way he vibratoes notes and chords is very interesting.
brought tears to my eyes
seriously
lol...
yeah, has the same effect on me.
Ted, you are simply an unstoppable influence to so many of us. Even years after your death I feel the same as if I would have the chance to met you and take a few lessons. I think those who dislike it, either missed the like button, or missed to pick up taste and ears by their birth.
That seems like all manner of harmonizing from a melody line. Each single note like a single fretted note in the melody gets accompanied by delicious other notes that evoke the exact feeling. And he does it one after another. Hugely impressive.
There are few musicians who it can be said is one with their instruments. Ted was not only one of those few, he was the best of one of those few.
He is hands down one of the greatest musician's and guitarists to walk the earth. His playing is extraordinary evkking thiughts not many musicians can. A complete understanding of music and all its potential. Thanks Ted!
love this man...theres an incredible calm in the air...wonderful interpretation..RIP Ted.
This is so cool... the way he swings the melody. This guy should have done film scores.
god i love his noodling... absolutely can feel the vibes :)))
I'm watching every one of Ted's videos and all of them just tear at my heartstrings. I hate to admit that I didn't know about Ted until about two months ago........and, I've been playing guitar since the early-70s (off and on). How this masterful player ever got beyond me, I'll never know. His playing is so soulful, it brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. I'm so glad I found these videos.
Ted was a treasure...he was totally unique....his only solo album is worth finding...I remember the first time I placed it on the turntable....my jaw dropped and I wanted to quit playing the guitar....it was a moment that I will remember for ever...enjoy seeing the master play, and there are many more videos of Ted playing...enjoy them all. RC
I took a few lessons from Ted, and I wanted to quit as well. But, in the end, I'm a better musician for it. I'm not Ted, I'm me.
To your credit, I think he's become much more widely known in the Internet Era, long after his death. Sad, because as you now know, he's beyond extraordinary. I never tire of hearing him improvise those "Baroque" sequences. Doing something like that is far beyond my imagination. Definitely one of those masterful musical brains. It's too bad for us that he didn't care to become a internationally renowned touring and performing artist. I know that none of these folks are necessarily influences on the guy, but it's like he's got a bit of Eric Johnson, Michael Hedges, Jeff Buckley, and Allan Holdsworth mixed in with (a more definite influence) Lenny Breau. There are very few jazz guitarists I'd rather hear though.
I wouldn't say that he didn't care about becoming an artist, it looks to me like that he'd rather learn&teach than perform. Also, I haven't seen him play wholly comfortable, it seems like there's always some tension when he plays, as if he wants to reach perfection and get's there to 99,999%. And that might frustrate him.
...Mesmerising talent. I have this lined up among other music, but it stops my day each & every time…
I just discovered Ted Greene and Lenny Breau all in one hell of an inspirational listening. Great to stumble across guitar heroes that have inspired legions of fellow greats as Metheny, Benson, Stern and Schofield. Brilliant!
Immer wieder wunderbar Menschen erleben zu dürfen, die Musik atmen.
Vielen Dank Ted, R.I.P.
Wow ....Ted Greene an absolute encyclopedia of guitar chords , what an incredible player !
Truly, a based human being, and we are all poorer for the loss of him. Saint Ted !
amazing how Ted Greene makes the whole neck into a sweet spot.
+Johnny Bongshow Great comment, man. I think that's the best way to describe how Ted plays.
the bb king box vs the ted greene box (the entire fretboard)
Actually, that's how it feels to improvise. It's very hard to play something that doesn't sound musical. I honestly can't remember the last time I played something awful during a moment of noodling. But making several minutes one big magical moment is something else which only a handful of people are able to do.
Smooth ❤it!!!
unbelievable talent. can't get enough of ted's playing
Ted is the best. Why, I don't know. There are many others that are very very good but you can see the love Ted has for what he is playing. He gets lost in the song, you can see he just checks out and the music flows.
is this the greatest intro to a song ever.......
one of myTG favorites
Watching Rembrandt paint would have been like this ❤️
Love the manual vibrato (neck shaking).
can you imagine what Ted could have done with a looping unit say a boss rc 300 and a roland gr-55 guitar synth
he'd be a god demon chord monster with his deep knowledge of music structures why is it the very best are lost
so young he could have done with another fifty years of life or more in my book
this guy is one of the greatest guitar players of all time . Is there a ted greene lesson on this or tab on the Eleanor rigby part
there are no words......................
I always have an era where i adore specially that one of a kind guitar player.
In my teen years it was Di Meola.
20-24 years old Andy Latimer
24-28 Zappa (I started playing guitar at 25)
28-29 Govan
29-32 Shawn Lane
32-35 Pat Metheny
35 now and Ted Greene seems to be the next idol in my life.
have you ever heard of bireli lagrene? :V
Yes i have and what a player he is!
Dear Ted. How Can You Improve On This !. Sublime !. God Bless x x .
ted was the man that started us all thinking about what we were doing worldwide help for everyone r.i.p
sometimes when god wants to play guitar he dresses up as ted greene !
then after a while messin with a bossa groove he realises he wants to reharmonise eleanor rigby and then look the hell out, nothing is safe except beauty in art.
Genius!
amazing!
He was in a band called The Nomads with future Electric Prunes member Mike Gannon in maybe '66, he was actually the one who taught Mike to play. Anyone who has seen them live?
I would have liked to hear Ted play single note solos at some time in the improvisation section.
Thanks Ted. First time listener!!! Curtis Eley gave me your name. I have been aTony Mattola follower since 1960. George Barnes is another influence. Love your playing and chord structures!!!
Staggering how few have liked this
great tonal landscape - reminds me some of Pierre Bensusan
ted nu how to play music on the guitar. also love to see his xpressions as human. awesome, his trully inspiring.
Freakin’ beautiful!!!!
BRILLIANT
ahhh he kills me! in the best way!! I love TED GREENE!!!
@imatube2
That is called independence for guitar, bass on the thumb, and harmony/melody on the bottom four.
His guitar sounds like a whole band...
@koreankayagum That is such a great comment. It's what I dedicate myself to. I appreciate your articulation and appreciation for such a great player.
wow!
Great stuff. Just out of curiosity, the amp he is playing through is a Fender Twin Reverb, right?
the whole Eminor intro is a improv vamp for Elinor Rigby
The opposite of hardrock - shows that instead of trying to catch peoples attention by being as loud as possible, you can catch peoples attention by being quiet and nuanced
woooooow!!!!!
Genius oohhhhhh man oh man
unreal
He is probably improvising most of the video.
He was improvising pretty much all of it
pinky hanging out in space doing stuff
they mostly recorded the album directly into the mixing board
Is he wearing a pair of reeboks!!! my mannn
I am now going to put my guitar away
Marcy, I put mine away almost 40 years ago after I first heard Ted play....you are not alone! lolll.
He is uplifting and depressing at the same time
@@Defundemorats Yup...No matter how much you practice, you can get to your personal goal, but in my case, I would never be able to reach for Ted's shoelaces...those shoelaces cast a heavy shadow over my playing....Ted was a genius...no doubt about it....When I look at the numbers above 780 likes and 6 downers...I imagine those 6 must be really fantastic players!!! Otherwise I wouldn't even make a negative comment! RC
Those six people most likely were heavy metal guitarists much much better than Ted.. LOL
@@RonaldCid I can't believe there are very many heavy metal guitarist that can play Eleanor Rigby on a whim
This video is the proof that god exists
I'd be careful using words like "proof" in this context. But yeah, there certainly is a sense of godliness over this performance.
59...way too young to go. r.i.p.
Better than some though....Django Reinhardt went at 43...Joe Pass went in his early 60s I think.....Wes Montgomery went at, about late 40s? I had never listened to Ted before but this is a revelation of playing..none of that show off shred here! This is stunning
Mmmhmm
@koreankayagum awww c'mon...i thought he could of used a couple of backup dancers lol! ;)
@therealrain LMAO!
Incredible playing. Strange right hand technique though.
Whatever became of teds tele? Who has it these days?..
full event? plz?
@koreankayagum You mean Thelonius Monk? :-)
Ahh... The chord chemist soothes....
4:49 wtf something came in from out there
2:22...
E. Rigby? I don't hear it. are we talking very loose chord change similarities?
Oh started hearing at 3:50
Is he improvising all this?
Of course....the chord chemist....the infinite knowledge of the fretboard, and chords
Tab/transcription??
There are people who voted this down? Are they tone deaf and blind?
agree ! WTF
Yeah, Jimi Hendrix fans.
@@bigswingface5847 that's an extremely arrogant and disingenuous comment
@@Tasmanaut That is YOUR opinion. It is, however, MY viewpoint, which I am entitled to and which I stand by 100%, regardless of any contrary opinion.
@@bigswingface5847 your comment is simply dumb, bro. And you know it. You are saying that the thumbs downs on this video are from Hendrix fans. Yeah, right, sure. You had to cast shade on Hendrix fans, rather than any other group of people. Despite the fact most Hendrix fans would never have seen this video, and if they did, they would probably enjoy it. And you know that, too. Clearly you have some sort of irrational hatred of Hendrix and his fans
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame material? I mean...you know what I mean
He must have had big hands as well as big ears
I don't get it.
How do you not get it ?
