Paper Mario has many advanced techniques, many of them seeing use in speedruns and glitch exhibitions. This video explains the most relevant techniques often exploited when I'm playing or glitching the game. Most are movement-based, which is pretty surprising for a story-heavy turn-based RPG.
The following advanced techniques are covered:
00:32 - Quick Jumping / Crouch Canceling
01:53 - Firebar Invincibility Canceling
02:57 - Jump-Canceling Spins
03:23 - Short Hops
04:59 - Step-Canceling Spins
05:24 - Ledge Jumps
05:45 - Stutter Steps & Neutral Jumping
07:09 - Spin Buffering
07:56 - Momentum-Canceling Buffered Spins
08:19 - Storing Buffered Spins
09:16 - Swag Hammer / Swag Jump
10:04 - Hammer Lag Canceling
11:02 - Ledge-Canceling Spins
A few glitches are also showcased:
05:57 - Dry Dry Outpost OoB (Unknown)
06:08 - Climbing Palm Trees (Discovered by Stryder7x)
06:30 - Dojo Early (Discovered by Stryder7x)
08:40 - 8-Bit Mario Glitch (Discovered by Imglower)
12:00 - Footrace with Kolorado the Quick (Discovered by Exylophone)

Somehow Paper Mario can both short hop and crouch cancel yet he's not a smash character
If you beat Crazy Hand in 15 seconds on European Hard difficulty then stare at the waterfall for exactly 302 minutes you get the chance to battle Paper Mario
He goes out of bounds and waits for the timer to run out, ending in a draw and counting as a loss for you
He even has buffered inputs and dash cancel - heck at the end of the video he was dash dancing!
@@BloodfelX Someone at Nintendo must be laughing at us
They probably tried on Melee but ended up crashing the entire engine...
He can even ledge cancel

Hmm yes, the floor here is made of floor

Thanks Captain Obvious
It's actually surprisingly simple.
"You can jump cancel a Spin Dash."
I feel smart for already knowing this casually.
"Most casual players know this, but they don't know you can do it faster."
I feel dumb again.
Same lol

I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I absolutely love the delivery of that “or you can just git gud” maybe it’s because it just catches me off guard with how formal you usually are, or maybe it just somehow has the absolute perfect amount of sass to it, but whatever the case it’s so funny to me.
i love the sass too
Read this, skipped to it and still laughed. It's the very small focus on "guúd"
Me: "oh look stryder has posted a video about technical stuff in paper mario"
Stryder: "this hammer thing i do in loading zones is just to show im a paper mario god nbd"
“This is equivalent to a fox short hop in Smash Bros. Melee.”
Speaking in words that I understand, I see.

Hey guys! I recently completed Paper Mario: Pro Mode on my Twitch livestream. It's a mod that greatly increases the game's difficulty. Had some pretty cool moments! I'm planning to upload a Pro Mode highlight video in addition to a "traditional" glitch video for October. On stream, we're now attempting Paper Mario: Master Quest, an even more absurdly challenging hack of the game. I ran out of end screen panels for the end of this video lol, so here's the link: twitch.tv/Stryder7x
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!
Hi

Love the vids :)
Totally out of context, but did you make a tweet about Salem and his hatred towards the Melee community?
How do you perform glitches in Paper Mario?

_~Stryder7x, 2019_
Fox jump squat is 3 frames in 60 FPS, so doing the lowest possible jump with Mario is actually slightly harder than short hopping as Fox
I was gonna say, theres no way its the same level. Short hopping with fox consistently is just a matter of like 10 minutes of practice
Stryder7x: Hey check this out...
I don't know why but hearing Stryder's voice telling me to check something out just seems so intriguing to me.
Mario is broken in PM64, play some other character unless you're a tryhard

I would have never expected an RPG would be so technical. Great video!
10:00 -- youve demonstrated one of my Favorite properties of Paper Mario: his total deadpan expression, no matter whats happening in the overworld...when i used to play PM64 (i only played it on the N64, when it was the 'most recent Mario game', so yes im a filthy Casual lol) i would often 'machinimatize' (machinimize? whatever, "Act Out") with Mario...a lot of situations in the story deserve a '...are you Kidding me??' kind of reaction, which is conveyed nicely by blankly staring one way, doing a quick 180, and then back again, before moving on to the next objective...in a way, it kinda adds to the immersion of the game, since My Thoughts of "...did that just happen?" seem to be integrated into Mario's head, and it makes it look like HE'S the one questioning life...
Stryder: Mario is surprisingly technical.
Ceave: _Wait, that's illegal._
A lot of Ceave viewers are here for some reason.
@Eleanor Bartle No idea how, but I'm not complaining.
I feel like a lot of this video is just Stryder7x flexing
As he should, since Paper Mario is his expertise
His Stryder7xpertise, if you will
Niiice.😂
"But it's being guarded by spikes."
I've been watching so much Ceave that I can only refer to these as "ouching spikes."

5:25 Paper Kong Mario Country.
I'm in love with frame perfect gameplay
same Ive always preferred TAS to normal runs
After everything you’ve been through, how is the game NOT technical?
8-bit Mario as an Air Bender. That's why he kept the wind from the spin dash after transforming. On a more serious not, amazing video! I miss Paper Mario a lot. It's my favorite game of all time.
'Wow! this was super cool!' and, 'Wow! You're really good at the game!' and all that but...
There's an 8 bit easter-egg?
Seriously, I never knew it was a thing. I knew about it in TTYD, but, wow.
That hammer cancel spin buffer peach portrait game at 10:47 was really impressive
8:10 Him NOT fighting the Amzee Dazee drives me crazee!
This is amazing info!
I always wondered why you hammer cancelled into a loading zone. I just thought It sped up something.
I haven't even played this game but the content is so good.
This is an essential game for anyone, the glitches and videos like these are just the icing on the cake.
9:53
Thats next level!!! 👏👏👏
My day is instantly better when Stryder uploads. Keep up the great work!
I always wonder if the little shy guy in the intro is ok. Dude needs a hug
This is actually my favorite video of yours now. Explaining technical stuff that I might not have noticed is exactly what I subscribed for!
Let’s hope this doesn’t make a ton of people ask why runners aren’t wall-cancelling in every room though. Lmao
You’re supposed to use Bow’s invisibility to slowly make your way to the end of the room.
*Or you could just get good.*
this is actually my favorite video of yours. i find it really interesting
This video is so damn comfy to watch. Thanks, Stryder. Much love.
stryder could legitimately use all his videos as some doctoral thesis on paper mario itself.
0:23
I love that intro so much!!
i love you videos but it always blows me away how popular such a niche topic is, keep it up my friend
Since swag hammering/jumping using the loading zones was brought up, I figure I'll add that you can also do "Dive Swags" on the water loading zones with Susie. When you do, the diving sound effect gets prolonged so that you hear it even after the next room loads in.
PM64 is the melee of paper mario
Love your vids and I am so glad I found this channel. Being able to find another way to love this game has been amazing and I've started using glitches for fun on my replays because of you.
Thank you for blessing us with this video Stryder
1:52 Note about this chapter for new people: in the TTYD remake, environmental hazards _can_ kill Mario, I learned this by accident during chapter 5 and wasted a life shroom as a result (I hadn't saved in a bit either so I just bit the bullet)
3:50 Stryder knows about Melee tech!
I literally shout out of joy when ever I see a Stryder video come up
8:11 Amazee Daysee! Sweet; you should've gotten its Star Points.
Nice! Thanks for uploading! Wouldn't mind seeing more like this!
The spindash is one of the things I missed the most in PM2. A ton of games suffer from boring movement options and the spindash+ability to cancel it with jumps or small ledges was a great way to make it so that movement is more involved and you never feel like you're just mundanely holding the analog stick waiting for Mario to get from point A to point B.
If only more videos like this were just as detailed as this one, such as sonic 3 and knuckles and a bunch more. Excellent video Stryder, never fail to impress.
I just gotta say, I played this so much as a kid and I love watching your videos!
been stoked for this since the stream yesterday!
These are amazing. Your passion for this game is something else.
Good lord, I cannot even begin to explain how near and dear this game is to my heart. Paper Mario and Paper Mario TTYD are definitely in my top three favourite games of all time!
These videos always keep me coming back to the games and learning new things even though I can't usually do a lot of the strategies that you highlight in your videos lol.
I love your content and I hope you keep making videos on these games for a good while.
They are also my favorite games. Something about the graphics, gameplay and music make them so good.
I swear, every time you upload it makes my day a 1000% times better
Please keep making these videos I love your channel so much because you are so on point
Stryder, Chuggaaconroy would LOVE that pun you just made at 5:36. Jumping in THIN air because it's PAPER Mario? XD Ya get it?

Comig home after a long day and seeing a new Paper Mario video makes me happy! Thank you Stryder7x!
This channel is truly an invaluable gem.
That's a lot of neat techniques
Omg i can’t believe I do almost all these little hints I didn’t know others knew about the speedy spin jump cancel and ledges
The normal spin cancels, short hops, and crouch cancel are all things I use regularly in casual play. The rest of this stuff I don't, and most of then I haven't even heard of!
stryder uploading? Blasphemy!
Always happy to see your videos pop up in my recommended! Keep doing what you do!
I was thinking you must play Melee by the terms you're using (crouch cancelling, movement options, etc) but when I heard you mention Fox's short hops I was like yeah it's confirmed, anybody who likes the technical aspect of gaming almost always ends up being a fan of Melee lmfao.
Thanks a ton Stryder!
I would never learn advanced techniques like this but this is still one of my favorite games ever.
Thank you for the video Stryder
Brb gonna go input some nice frame-perfect angle-perfect wall collision cancel boosts for fun
Amazing vid as always!
I can use this information for my playthrough thanks for this vid. Also good vid dude
I was using the speedy spin with the short jumps as a casual. Pretty cool
"you jump in thin air"
not sure if this is a paper pun or not, but it still got a chuckle out of me
10:48 I could watch that for hours
interesting! you always make such entertaining videos!
2:58 Now that you mention the move name, I think it might've been removed in every PM game onward since the move itself is called "Spin Dash", which is also the name of one of Sonic's staple moves, first introduced in Sonic 2. In theory, Nintendo would have to pay Sega royalties had the former kept the move in the later games, right?
Love finding videos like this. :')
I had no idea of these techniques since I don't watch Paper Mario 64 speed runs. That's crazy. Almost on par with Quake's repertoire of movement tricks.
"surprisingly"
edit: i was thoroughly surprised
Sweet another stryder video!!!
i didn’t know a video explaining glitches in a game made 19 years ago could be this entertaining, keep it up!
I have never played a paper Mario game, but this channel is still one of my favorites
A new Stryder7x video?

This guys is the best. Great video man
This makes me want to get into speedrunning paper mario, seems like it'd be a lot of fun
i feel smart for knowing the short hop spindash trick as a child.
I would love a more detailed video, even if a short one, on how you can practice frame perfect jumps for LZS and such
yay new stryder upload
