I think it's terrible that Japanese people are not being educated about the unspeakable crimes in the past. How can they even talk about the relationship to China in an elaborate way, if they don't know the key reason of the tensions between the countries. As a German I learned about our WWII crimes and I'm even trying to talk about it with people when I see nationalism growing too strong in their countries, to warn them. Japan is a mature industry nation that should face it's past and take the responsibility. Many Chinese people told me that they do not only feel sad and angry about the crimes, but also about the fact that Japanese people are not teaching their students about it and even honour their WWII soldiers in an official celebration. As a Chinese I would feel deeply disappointed too.

    • @bobopro1628

Wars never have victors, only losers. Summing up crimes from the other side doesn't excuse your own wrong doings. Right wing extremists are denying the crimes committed by Germany and blame other countries for theirs. This is a shame and an insult to the families that have suffered from Germany's mistakes. If Germany didnt attack East and West and sacrificed all their soldiers for a megalomaniac imperialistic plan, then there wouldnt have been any Russian soldiers nor British bombs on German soil. Blame and prejudice only lead to more nationalistic hatred. We should see our own flaws and try to understand the other side. Not the other way around! Thats the Christian way and also the Buddhist way btw. It seems like you want to defend our country by pointing with fingers at others. This is not the type of defense, that we need. It only leads to more hatred and blame into both directions. It supports nationalists who are using these arguments to attack foreigners in their own country. This is how everything started in the first place. So we should learn from history and avoid repeating the whole craziness over and over again.?

Well, Chinese young people didn't just learn about the history of WWII from textbook and news, we actually have families, relatives, and other survivors who lived through those times and told us what had happened according to their own experiences, so we definitely have a more complete understanding about that part of history.

The Chinese government won't even let you use RUclips or Facebook out of fear, so how can you trust what they tell you? Even the people of Hong Kong don't want the Chinese there. Some stories from Singapore/Malaysia’s Chinese perspective:-
My grandparents survived the 4-year Japanese occupation in Singapore/ Malaya in early 1940s.
When I was little (around 6 yo), I asked my grandpa why there is a deep wound at his lower back near where his spine is, It’s so deep that I was able to put my thumb into it. Later I found out from my dad it’s pierced through by a bayonet by Japanese soldier. I also heard that my grandpa was one of the few survivors in his village because he happened to be a good chef.
My grandma, usually taciturn but kind. She never mentioned a word about the war to grandchildren. During her old age (around 80years old) and she was suffering from dementia, whenever she saw me, she would whisper, “ hey grandson, be careful, they (Japanese) are hiding at the corner (my grandparents lived in the deep jungle for two years hiding) , let me go kill them for you!” and she would proceed to the kitchen and bring out kitchen knive, stood at the front door with posture that she’s ready to fight them with her feeble hands that’s still trembling”.
I wrote this with a heavy heart especially I felt bad for my grandma, why she held this trauma so tightly that’s inflicted her for so long and never expressed any anger. And it’s only towards the end of her life all the horror images just kept replaying in her mind came back to haunt her.
I don’t hate Japanese but My message to everyone who reads this is to have an idea the trauma of a war could have inflicted the person for decades..
World peace .. pray for no more wars... price too high to pay
Btw My grandma has a nice name “Xie Qiao Zhuang” 谢巧莊 (born 1912 in swatow) She’s not educated but she has a big heart- for eg, when others suffered from hunger, she would donate her savings to them to buy foods... Hope she ascends to heaven..

I have been to the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall. Because of the large number of people in China, you often need to raise your volume to have a conversation, but everyone was very quiet when I went in that day. I was very sad that day. On this matter, Japan has until 2023 This incident, including the comfort women incident, is still not recognized. The German government is also the country that launched World War II. They actively admit their mistakes and compensate the victimized countries. The Chinese do not need compensation, and they must apologize. Most of these comfort women are already 90 years old. Death has not yet received an apology from the Chinese government. The Japanese government is still enshrining the Yasukuni Shrine, a place where Class A war criminals of World War II are worshipped, which shows that Japan's militarism is still very strong.

For this reason, I also made a special trip to Beijing to interview a local relative, who was present at the time of the incident. I got a lot of details and shared them with my classmates. Almost everyone who knows will not deny the incident, and most also take the student's position.
But many people in Japan are unaware of their history incident, or are covering up Nanjing's past, from questioning the numbers a few years ago to denying the whole event now. There are even extremist nationalists who think they are doing the right thing. This is an atrocity rare in human history, enough to make everyone indignant, yet it is so whitewashed.

I don’t think any Japanese put a hate on an American individual for dropping atomic bombs, at least as far as I know. I feel like the difference here is that Chinese people are much more collectivistic and tend to be emotionally more protective of their ancestors and history than Japanese people. Also, people in Japan generally know how to separate historical events and an individual personality.
As a Japanese, I’ve been to China, worked with Chinese people, and also met different kinds of Chinese people both in mainland China and abroad.
When it comes to mainland Chinese people, I’ve experienced a lot of of hate directed to me simply because I am Japanese. Some of them told me they were surprised not all Japanese are evil after actually getting to know a Japanese person in real life. Honestly I was surprised how narrow minded people can be to generalize the whole personality of Japanese people.
I’m not justifying the Japan’s action against China in the past, but there are a lot hatred instilled into todays Chinese people in their state education, and the communist party is actively promoting the anti Japanese sentiments in China to divert peoples interests from their domestic problems. I hate to say this, but a lot of mainland young Chinese people seemed rather brainwashed to be overly nationalistic and hate Japan more than necessary. Many of them haven’t actually met a single Japanese person, and haven’t even experienced or lived in the past, yet told me they can’t like Japan for what the people did to their Chinese ancestors.
I try to respect the local people and also because I am aware of the sensitivity of historical issues, I was very careful of how I talk with the local people. But after my attempts to be friends with Chinese people, I got really tired of making efforts, as many of them seemed to see me as “A descendant of evil war criminal”, instead of me as an individual.

I'm a German Holocaust historian, currently focusing on the Jewish-Chinese communities in Shanghai. I did some research on the Nanjing massacre, and it is one of the worst war crimes ever committed. Over 200,000 people, most of them civilians, were brutally tortured to death. Japan really needs to start taking responsibility for this. Japanese people should be more educated about the Sino-Japanese War, the occupation, the Nanjing massacre, and every other war crime they committed all over Asia. I can only hope they will start educating about this, because so far it's been a really tabooed topic, and the wounds in China are still deep. Her memory has been deteriorating, sometimes she can't even remember our names, but the particular memory that haunts her the most was when she had to hide under the stove (where they start fires to cook) with her siblings to hide from the Japanese' rampage. She never forgot this trauma, she would see shadows pass by her windows and it still traumatizes her. She was fortunate enough to not be in the 'worse' districts. During the honeymoon period of the relationship between China and Japan, due to Japan's well-developed cultural industry, a considerable number of young Chinese have complicated feelings towards Japan (culturally fond of Japan, but politically hostile). Because the war history is very close (1931-1945), and there is no apology, and now Japan is more inclined to rely on the United States to offset China's influence, which is unreliable politically and militarily, even for Chinese people who have a good impression of Japanese culture, if you show this tendency, you will still be spurned by your compatriots.,you will know this by flipping through the comment area. But for ordinary people, the benefits of the union of the three East Asian countries(economic, cultural, and other aspects) are really tempting. We humans are still too susceptible to ideological influence (sad).Quarrels on the Internet are nothing. I visited the museum for the Nanjing Massacre and it still haunts me to this day. No words can describe the horrors I saw and felt. It was even more brutal than what I experienced at the concentration camp museums in Germany. I can understand that the Chinese are still suffering great heartache and outrage over it. That being said, I will also never forget the bone chilling impression I got at the end of the museum tour in Nanjing from the absolute hate I felt from the Chinese towards the Japanese. It terrified me! Genuine thirst for blood and vengeance. It turned from a beautiful, devastating, reverent reminder to honor the dead to a passioned, promise of retaliation. That was the impression I got anyway. It made me want to leave China right away, despite how much I love the country and the people I met there. I hope with all of my heart that Japan will be able to acknowledge and answer to the crimes they committed - sooner than later. Maybe then the Chinese can allow themselves to heal and begin to see that the actions of the Japanese officials and soldiers does not reflect the nature of the rest of Japanese people - at least not from my experiences with them.

Best comment. I think the Japanese owe it to the Chinese to admit their mistake (as the Germans did) and seek forgiveness rather than try to erase their brutality from the history book. It is this SECOND mistake (refusing to admit the wrong doing in the past) that is causing the Chinese's blood to boil in them. In Europe, they were able to move on because the Germans admitted their mistake and even pass a law against Nazism.
Whither Japan??? Why, oh why, Japan do you not admit your mistake instead of trying to erase it from history books? Admit, repent, apologize and move on.

After the world war 2 finished in China, some Japanese women went back to Japan but left their children in China, some Japanese killed themselves and left their children. So these children became “Japanese orphans”. They were all raised and protected by Chinese families. Even though suffered so much from Japanese, these kind Chinese people still saved the Japanese kids. Because we Chinese has a concept: children are innocent, and innocent people should not be hurt.

Then, I realized my pity for not knowing the fact until I learned Japanese history. In seeking world peace, we must make sure that we understand the mistakes our country has made in the past. I'm very grateful to the history teacher for giving me a class that did not give a convenient interpretation to the Japanese, but that look at reality objectively. None of Japanese want war. Young children especially love the culture of other countries. That's why I want to take responsibility and spread the facts of the past.

The group that I had with me was just composed of 5 Japanese highschoolers that were taller than me, of course I'm just an average sized Filipino. We went into the WW2 museum of my University here they saw old newspapers that were too old to be held or touched, they saw the displayed helmet of a fallen young filipino soldier who was shot by the Japanese. They started crying and hugging me and other pinoys in the area seemingly asking for forgiveness, I just smiled and said to them "no it's ok it already happened, that was not your fault, we are friends now", this made them cry even more. I told them that I am 25% Japanese thinking that it would make them feel better, but still they cried even more. I have a feeling that they were never taught about what really happened because they were shocked to see the exhibits.

Even in today's China, especially in the north, there are still a lot of people who don’t like Japan and refuse to buy Japanese cars. Including children. I also read some books about Japanese history and culture in the last ten years, and went to Japan twice then I gradually changed my mind. History needs to be remembered, the dead need to be remembered, society also needs to progress, since hatred is hard to forget, then let yourself be strong and kind, not to beat others, but at least don't be bullied. That’s what history teaches us.

I had a co-worker tell me her aunt and uncle had a big fight because he purchased a Japanese car and she refused to ride in it. The aunt felt that the uncle did it on purpose to offend her. So funny how you are validating my co-workers statement. At the time I chalked it up to old people fighting. I did not realize the history behind it.

I'm chinese, and I think we should learn much from japan. japan is the best country in asia. the US army should leave japan to make japan a normal country. china and japan should live in peace and friendly forever.

yeah crimes so hideous that we even published it on the newspaper and made a movie about it. we didn't hide our crimes unlike Germany. but why did it took so long for US intelligence to report our crime? beats me. but someone is lying.
