  • We are on the Monongahela Railway at Fredericktown PA. as we watch a loaded north bound coal train pass. The DE trains have mid train helpers that are radio controlled But in this clip, there is a crew in the cab of 009. The train is loaded at two different mines on the MGA to blend the coal. Detroit Edison no longer owns their own locomotives.

I remember DE trains running through Russell Kentucky coming from the Coal River sub in West Virginia and heading to Michigan.

@BudmanPackfan Not sure! You would think the maintance, and FRA inspections would be tuff on them alone. They did finally do away with road units. I think they still have a few units they use to work the plant. CE (Cleveland Elctric) had their own locomotives as well. All GP38's I believe... Thanks for watching...

I agree about the Dash-8 standard cabs. Great looking engines!

I can remember those Detroit Edison units running through Elizabeth Pa on the P&LE. They came right down the street.

I believe they used Rotary Dumpers for unloading these cars. Does anyone have information on that?

Jack, was the thinking by DE at the time to own their own locomotives a way to keep costs of transport down?

A shame that DE doesn't have their own engines anymore. The video was very enjoyable and the Conrails were a nice little bonus.
