  • This video starts out 7 miles to the southeast at Spencer, Ohio - where I caught a meet at the ex-AC&Y diamond adjacent to Route 301. Some ex-NW high-hood SD45s, a slug (9951), and a GP35 take the coal train to Wellington. After hanging around the Spencer diamond for a few minutes, I followed the WLE coal train to Wellington, where an eastbound Conrail TV train comes through first. I’m pretty sure this was TV-6. The WLE drops off the string of coal and the Cleveland Electric GP38-2 lashup of 4 comes in to take them away. The WLE power finally heads back across the diamond to Brewster. I saw this operation at least one other time, catching it on video just this one time. I was only monitoring the WLE channel (161.025 MHz) with my 2-meter HT. The southeast interchange track at Wellington is gone today and the Conrail (now CSX) is double-track. Long before this was filmed, there was a connection on the northeast corner, as well. In the final shot, I am standing just about where Huff Tower (WC) used to be. VHS original. Thanks for watching! ~ Zeke

This is incredible. I had no idea the CEI got coal trains from the WLE here, and look at all those signals on the WLE! All gone today. Really glad you were able to capture this operation I had no idea even existed.

I did not know W&LE had been around that long. This is great. Long live the W&LE.

Oh yeah. The current W&LE dates back to 1990, but the original one originated in the 19th century.

I've never seen a Wheeling and Lake Erie train go that fast! All the tracks they use around here are low speed.
