As an armchair train driver that was just the most. The inertia of the whole train and the skill in getting it going again was wondrous. I hope the magic of it all is never lost on the drivers! Thanks from me.
I used to hear the U-Boats coming out of Altoona and heading towards the the Horseshoe Curve. If you stood there with your eyes closed you'd swear it was a steam engine climbing the grade. Can't beat the sound of a 4 cycle diesel. Thanks for letting us hear the 6440 startup and pull away, after the crew change. Great stuff!
Oh man Tinsby! When I was driving cross country back in the early 80's, I was bobtailing back fro Michigan and stopped with the truck and sleep at Horse Shoe curve overnight. As I layed in the bunk, I could hear those GE's leaving Altoona, and I swear I could hear them going into the tunnel at Cresson. Fantastic! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching...
For the past couple of years I've been searching out videos of the Somerset coal train, the older the better. I live near the Somerset power plant in New York and Somerset Railroad. It's on its last days now and is expected to shut down within the next year or so. Back in the Conrail days I watched hundreds of coal trains go by, all those crisp black and yellow cars pulled by big blue engines. I miss Conrail and I know I'm going to miss the SR when its gone. Thanks for keeping this video online.
I miss this so much. There will never again be old power like that haulin freight. I have many videos from Selkirk NY back in the 90's when my dad and I would go up for the day. now it's all new power in CSX colors. The experience is the same but the motive power has changed
Nice video. GE is the front loco and an EMD is the rear one. Here by us in SA they are never used together on the same train. Very nice sound to both of them.
@simonspics1 We knew most of the guys! Great friendly bunch. It was all down hill after Conrail took over the MGA, and most of the good places are all grown up. Thanks for watching...
Wow! I love it......do you know these guys? They acted like it.Im gonna have to pay this place a visit next time i come to horseshoe curve.Love that sound ur right about that. Thanks for putting up this video!
Some tug boats in new york harbor are powered by alco engines. Very similar to the fdl-16 engines that are in these old GE's. Infact there are alco locomotives. They are not built anymore sadly but some are around. There are quite a few videos here on youtube of alco locomotives and i have even seen a tugboat engineroom with a alco in it. Just type mcallister engine room. I hope i have helped.
I've often wondered if Conrail loco's were blue because Penn Central had so much blue paint left over. They were trying to turn a profit after all. Anyone know why they chose blue? If I remember correctly they started out black, right.
Jack, Can you explain why today's GE's don't have that wonderful chugging that we and many others love? Is it due to increased muffling of the exhaust or ??? I know the GEVO's are good on fuel but I can't see how that effects the exhaust note. Still love 'em even if I have to come here to hear them! :D
It is a re-design of the prime mover, and silencers added that make them sound different. But those old GE's with the FDL engines in them have the best sound. Thanks for watching...
PingasTheFourth the Exchaust sounds cool and Crazy it sounds more like Boom Boom! Boom ! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom ! like a Motor boat ready to Dock with it's turbines versing it's engine to slow down but really this train did stop .
The lead unit is a 4 cycle GE which probably is making that noise if you are talking about the deep throaty barking sound. If you are talking about the kind of high pitched sound with a bit of bass mixed into it, that is the EMD trailing which is a 2 cycle unit.
Yes we do Michael. I wasn't a big Conrail fan, but now that it is gone, it is missed, and the blue locomotives are a lot better looking than NS black. I do not like black locomotives, unless its steam. Thanks for watching.

I don't know why but I love that sound
I miss Conrail! Love those C30-7s. They sound a bit like Alcos.
I used to hear the U-Boats coming out of Altoona and heading towards the the Horseshoe Curve. If you stood there with your eyes closed you'd swear it was a steam engine climbing the grade. Excellent GE chugging. Great video, Jack.

Great Video. Love the sound of those old GE U-boats. Thanks
Thanks Peter. Glad you enjoyed it.
Jack, this has got to be one of the best video of any modern railroading !!!
Often times, this is sound is the only reason that I know a freight train is going by. I love it. :D
Great video of the Conrail units
Back in the day... Thank you... Can almost smell the mountains and the diesel.
Ohhh yahhh. The sights, sounds and smells. You can't beat it. Thanks for watching...
Awesome video, I was born in the Penn Central / Conrail days. This video brings back some great memories!!
Nothing better then the sound of a GE or Alco
Those two conrails do sound excellent. I like how the new crew member walked out the back door of the lead unit and waved and yelled hey
Wow that has to be one of the best sounding GE's out there!
Those old U-Boats have a sound al their own.
Joe Morris sound like a ferry boat pulling into the Harbor
I miss this so much. There will never again be old power like that haulin freight. I have many videos from Selkirk NY back in the 90's when my dad and I would go up for the day. now it's all new power in CSX colors. The experience is the same but the motive power has changed
Yep, great sound. Lately I've had an attraction to Conrail and I really liked this video.
The classic chug of a Dash 7. Nice footage!
So that's how we get coal. Drive through a mountain and it fills the cars with coal, YESH! Old Conrail guy here
Nice video. GE is the front loco and an EMD is the rear one. Here by us in SA they are never used together on the same train. Very nice sound to both of them.
Love these old video from back in the Day Especially the Old Con rail Days!!
Carmichael Train Production Channel 327 sounds like motor boat I mean that's what a U-boat sounds like .
great video, keep them comming, love them old locos....
Love the smoke and the chugging---both missing on ALL of the newer locos.
They sure are Warren. Those were the days. Thanks for watching...
im glad we still got those Locomotives because i know that sound anywhere
Are you kidding! That is so sad! Well...............thanks again for the great video and helping us remember how it really was!
Bring back that classic sound! :-)
Awesome video man! That GE sounded amazing!!
The unmistakable sound of a four stroke GE 7FDL-16! I'll take this sound over the current GEVO junk any day!
very nice sound! great old conrail unit! well done!|
alex
The U-boat on the head end is a 4 stroke, trailing unit is a 2 stroke EMD.
those trains are music to my ears.
Now that's how a GE is supposed to sound. Santa Fe and Rock Island trains used to slow to a crawl and change crews on the move.
Very nice video and cool diesel sound. Thumbs up! :)
That is awesome footage.
Brilliant sound
Alright thanks I wish they were still around
What a great noise.
@xxxDeath9572xxx It was on the Monongahela! South of Waynesburg about 10 miles...
Now this was the good old days. Shame they are gone.
labhunter1 yeah same with CSX
awesome power! The turbo on that SD-50 is just as loud
@simonspics1 We knew most of the guys! Great friendly bunch. It was all down hill after Conrail took over the MGA, and most of the good places are all grown up. Thanks for watching...
I think the front unit is a U36C, judging by the six axles and the flared radiator.
Wow! I love it......do you know these guys? They acted like it.Im gonna have to pay this place a visit next time i come to horseshoe curve.Love that sound ur right about that. Thanks for putting up this video!
Man...its really a shame how grown in this is today! the MGA has tons of great spots that are so hard to do anymore.
Great place, thanks
I t was a real chugging contest when these things ran with NS C40-9Ws. That was loud
superb!
And now when I railfan I kick around for an hour while the crew changes! They don't do it like they used to thats for sure!
I should have been more specific, which branch of the old MGA? But thanks for the info, really interesting scene.
These old Uboats sound very similar to the Port Authority tug boats in the NY harbor.
Awesome
love that chug.
NS has a great paint scheme, but somehow it seems like Conrail's blue was a nicer contrast with rural countryside.
Still active with the NS mine trains? Might just as well pop down there.

excepcional audio
I love GE Sound
No doubt about it dubcity. And the older GE's did sound the best. Thanks for watching...
Same with me I love GE noises
Sewing machines!
We used to call the old GEs "sowing machines"
Now that you mention it -
Are those Conrail U Boat engines those awesome 2 stroke diesel engines
Wow, great sounding is right.. What line is White Cottage located on?
2:35 heheh, that was pretty neat
I've often wondered if Conrail loco's were blue because Penn Central had so much blue paint left over. They were trying to turn a profit after all. Anyone know why they chose blue? If I remember correctly they started out black, right.
I miss that chugging GE sound. The current GEVOs have no “soul” when it comes to sound.
The old GE's sound like a G John Deere tractor powering a threshing machine
Yah they do. Just love the way they sound. Thanks for watching...
Jack, Can you explain why today's GE's don't have that wonderful chugging that we and many others love? Is it due to increased muffling of the exhaust or ??? I know the GEVO's are good on fuel but I can't see how that effects the exhaust note.

It is a re-design of the prime mover, and silencers added that make them sound different. But those old GE's with the FDL engines in them have the best sound. Thanks for watching...
What is cousing that "old 2 cylinder tractor" sound. If you stand next to this loco's they purr like a cat.

That train sounds like it's on it's last leg! Did it throw piston rod?
As a Brit I get the impression that you railfans really miss Conrail and their engines.
Yes we do Michael. I wasn't a big Conrail fan, but now that it is gone, it is missed, and the blue locomotives are a lot better looking than NS black. I do not like black locomotives, unless its steam. Thanks for watching.
to be honest it looks to me like a dash 7
@Anthony H. The hilarious thing is that was eight years ago and i was probably replying to someone else. lol
C30-7 Brasil
No, I dont think so.
C36-7 :)
