  • Watch conservation officers in the Florida Everglades engage in the hazardous yet humane task of "deer dogging," where they catch wild deer by airboat to administer life-saving treatments. Despite the dangers of sharp antlers and rough terrain, their efforts are crucial in preserving wildlife.

I would have loved that job. Out in the Glades, no cell phones, just them and nature. Possibly 2way radio, but it was probably only used for emergencies.

You'd have to have watched your ass around Shirley while out there in the wilderness.

Amazing that this is the way conservationists used to be treating the wildlife.
I live in Pennsylvania and when I called local veterinarians about a buck with a hoof issue I was told to call the game commission and they'd send out someone to kill the buck and was told that it was illegal for the veterinarian to treat it.
My response was that I hoped it would not be a physicians position because I wouldn't want to be put down for an ingrown toenail.

@@user-mi8bj4cc5p laughed about as much as the game enforcer that was telling me about the reason for fines for feeding the bears, because they become too familiar with humans and they end up entering their homes and then he has to kill the bears.
I responded with the facts that we came to their habitat and destroyed it along with their food sources, making them homeless and having to go through our garbage just like our own homeless people, but if they get inside of someone else's house you should kill them then why do you suppose a movie like Les Miserables was all about?

So, you called a local vet, that gets paid to treat pets. Then, you were surprised when he told you that he legally couldn't treat wild animals that fall under the protection of the government (local or federal), but this seemed odd to you.
I don't think the vet was the one that seemed odd...

@@adb888 vet wasn't the point of the post Rather it was those wonderful governmental agencies response to the fact that they're only going to kill it not treat them.

I'm a native Floridian of 57 years and remember hearing about "deer dogging". My grandfather told me about the screw worm epidemic and the way the screw worm was eradicated was because someone figured out that sterilizing millions of captive flies that caused it and releasing them back in the wild would cause the flies in the wild not to be able to reproduce.
It worked. If it didn't there might not be any white-tailed deer today.
