- I was recently up on the central coast visiting Hearst Castle, and stopped by to visit the elephant seals near the Piedras Blancas light station. They are so adorable, I could watch them all day! This time around, Paul Kane, a docent with Friends of the Elephant Seal, shared some elephant seal facts with me, including the best times to visit and a little of their history here in California.

They are so cute! And thanks for sharing the history of how they ended up there. Seals always remind me of our Daisy dog. ;)
Thanks Hilah Cooking ! They totally remind me of my dog too! I could watch them all day. :)
So interesting and beautiful.
We were there on the 13th and it was amazing! We've never seen anything like that before.
Would love to see these!
leah chorniak It was so beautiful. There were hundreds just feet away from us.
Loved it when I went there! :-)
Fun! Aren't they adorable?
Beautiful.
Glad to see.
Good info.
Thanks for watching!
thanks!
i 've been there
Cool! Kisa Asad What time of year did you visit? I'm sad I missed the orcas. They had passed through the day before we visited.
when exactly were you here? the beach is just packed with elephant seals in your shots. we were here in mid March and as the guide suggested most of the seals had left the area by that time. we probably saw about 1/4 as many as you have in your video.
wish you had included some closer shots of the light house (which we can see in the distance in your opening shots) too as it is quite an attractive historic building. I watched some videos on here about the restoration project that is under way to return the light to the top of the light house which has been ``headless`` since 1948.
Hey RedroomStudios We were there a couple weeks ago - May 11, 2014. The females and juveniles arrive back at the rookery in May to molt, then head out again. I put a calendar of what to expect throughout the year on my website: californiatravelexpert.com/elephant-seals-hearst-castle/
California Travel Tips ah, ok. I dont think he mentioned that. I assumed when he said that they leave in February that they are gone until the following season. thanks for the reply and link!
