I bought the G10 version of this knife, and it is awesome! with the exception of the blade steel, it is every bit as good as my Delica, and I won't cry as many tears if I lose the Byrd Meadowlark 2. I liked this knfe so much, I went out and bought the G10 Cara Cara 2 instead of the G10 Endura.

A month??? I have been been carrying my " cheap knockoff" Meadowlark for three years, and the clip has not folded over on itself, my seatbelt hasn't ripped it from my jeans pocket, the scales haven't broken or fallen off, and the blade hasn't broken. It is true that it doesn't hold an edge for very long, but that hasn't been a problem. I hit it with a ceramic rod once a week and it's good to go -- and that's with daily use. At today's prices for the Spiderco Delica on Amazon, I can buy four of these $20 Byrd knives. I call that a good value!!!

The Delica is absurdly overpriced for what is basically a 30 year old design with no major modern updates. If I could find one for $50 or less, I'd try it. But for the $80-90 they're going for now, there are a LOT of other options that I'd rather have.

I usually agree with your takes Nick, I'm a giant knife guy too and a big fan...But your take on this one is way off imo. Find me a better quality $20 pocket knife. The fit and finish of the Byrd knives are remarkable for what you pay. As for 8cr, I'd much rather a steel that needs sharpened more frequently but sharpens easily than say S35VN, that is an absolute pain to put an edge back on. I'm a Sebenza owner so I understand where you're coming from, but dude...these things are awesome value!

  • @berryae74

I have one of these knives and I honestly love it. It doesn't feel as nice as my Delica but it serves a very specific purpose for me. As I was leaving work the other evening another co-worker had the late shift and forgot her knife and and was struggling with a bunch of packages so I handed her this pocket knife and went home and didn't worry about weather or not it would get damaged or lost because it only cost $20 bucks. I did get it back the next morning in perfect working order, but I can say I probably wouldn't have given up my Delica because it's a much more expensive knife. Personally I think it it's a great knife from a reputable company and I would rather spend $20 bucks on a name brand knife that I trust over some no name knife I've never heard of. Not everyone needs, will or can spend 60 or 70 bucks for a pocket knife but everyone should have an affordable reliable pocket knife. Just my opinion and that is only worth what you paid for it which is $0.00 and if I'm honest I think the Delica is a great knife but in my opinion over priced by about $20.00 and feels cheap to me when I compare it to my Cold Steel for the same money...

The non-chamfered grips on the Meadowlark 2 drive me crazy. How hard would putting a slight curve on the edge of the FRN have been? It seems all the FRN handled byrds are like that. But the stainless steel and titanium ones are chamfered

I feel guilty.. but I prefer my Cara Cara to my $150 special edition Endura 4. I think a lot of it has to do with how similar they are but it costs 1/4 the price. So I can use it freely however I want, which I will not do with my expensive knives.
This guy was wayyyy to hard on them. If all I saw was this review I’d never have bought one. So, guys keep in mind this dude is a professional that deals with super nice blades.. so him seeing a knife that an everyday guy can use they are “garbage”
He’s 100% wrong on the quality and feel but whatever.. to each their own. He’s kinda an arrogant prick if I’m being honest, lol.

I disagree on a few points, or maybe you got a bad one. The plastic doesn't feel particularly cheap to me, the clip feels solid, and the hole on mine isn't sharp.
As a disclaimer, mine's actually a hawkbill, but it should be a blade shape variant of the same knife. The handle looks the same.
My main gripe is actually how the textured handle collects grime. I don't particularly like 8cr13mov but for $20 I can't complain.

I bought a Bird at a time when I thought it was a Spyderco and wouldn't pay a lot for a knife. The Delica was over twice as much. The Bird was inexpensive and serviceable. The thumb hole had sharp edges but, what can you expect for the price. I won't be buying another since I finally bought a CRK Sabenza which I thought I would never do. My taste has changed and I am enjoying the fit, finish and quality of my higher priced knives. I still buy value priced knives. I really like my RAT II. It's just a matter of where your taste, budget and priorities are. Just make sure you always have a knife with you at all times. I feel naked without one.

  • @MatthewScheuerman

Nick, Outstanding video once again. I purchased the Meadowlark 2 because I wanted a Delica with a finger choil. As you know, this was a big mistake, and now after owning several Delica-like knives, I realize that I didn't even need the choil. You didn't talk about the blade centering (which is always to the left on every-one's Meadowlark...) and blade lockup.
I took mine apart to make it smoother, and found a lot of problems with the plastic inside the scale. I sanded these areas down and the knife opens smoother but I still wish I hadn't bought this knife. Unfortunately, Spyderco has me hooked and I like the look of the Titanium version so much that I'll buy it when it comes out and hope for the best.
You mentioned the clip snagging on a seatbelt. Mine did exactly that and I had to bend it back.
I really wish I had watched this vid before buying one. I would have just bought a Delica instead.

"This is a cheap thing done well, and this is an expensive thing, done cheaply." that's a huge difference. If a knife is designed to hit a certain price point, cutting back from that means taking away quality that was there. A knife intended to be manufactured for 20 dollars will be better than a 60 dollar knife, that removes everything that made it good to hit the 20 dollar mark. The Tenacious line, along with budget Kershaws, show real value. A Kershaw Shuffle cost me $15, and still came shaving sharp from the box. It didn't need to try and be a more expensive knife. It was a knife well worth what I paid for it. If they tried making a $15 version of a more expensive model, would that have been worth it? I doubt it.

I think what makes Byrd feel so dirty is that it doesn't just feel like they're making a budget brand, it feels like they're cloning their own knives and going out of their way to make them so much worse that you end up eventually just buying a Spyderco.
I get that this is a $20 knife, but compared to what they've done on the Delica, there are a lot of things here that really just feel like "Hah, screw you. This is what you get for going cheap."
Like, you don't pick up a Civivi and think "God, this feels like a TERRIBLE version of a WE knife."
But you definitely pick up most Byrds and think "Gross, this is atrocious."

But, for the price of the Meadowlark, you're better off saving for the Tenacious or other low-price Spyderco- or you're better off saving up even more than $40 and getting a Delica.

If Nick Shabazz is such a knife snob, why is his standard benchmark the $60 Delica 4?
Seriously, I’ve got some excellent knives and I also have some cheapos. There is ABSOLUTELY a place for cheap knives like Byrds, and much like with cars, there is a hard line of diminishing returns after about $100 spent on a carry knife. What Nick is very clearly saying is that you will get years of use out of a Delica 4 at its market price of $60, and anything this much cheaper (like the Meadowlark) has by definition made sacrifices in terms of durability. You could carry a razor blade with a piece of duct tape around one end for under a buck, but you’re giving something up, aren’t you?

the handle shape of the original buck knives was more edgy, not rounded off. buck designed them that way for better grip. as an example look at the pakistani knock offs from the 70s. the byrd knives scales have more of an edge achieving the same result. buck rounded off the edges by request from knife buyers. i love my byrd knives. i own both the delica and the meadowlark. if i handle them both with my eyes closed i can not tell the difference in feel. in 2024 the delica is around $95. the byrds around $35. im going to keep buying byrds for my collection. sorry nick.

You nitpicked wayyy harder then I’d have thought for a knife this size and price. Also, that cheap pocket clip you say will break easy is a Spyderco left unpainted and stamped. The metal makeup and everything else is exact same.
You keep calling the FRN cheap plastic.. and while that’s technically correct, say FRN.. that’s what it is. And to me it feels better and grippier then my Enduras (but I think that’s more to do with how thin Byrd FRN handles are)
Anyways.. I have had 4 Cara Caras and end up giving them away to people when they show interest in them, I like the idea of my people having a nice blade anyhow. Last one I had was in my pocket daily for about a year. It cut drywall, pried steel studs in track, cut in a dirty ass sink garbage disposal.. I was absolutely brutal on my last one and still was sharp as shit and looked great. When my friend was moving her and her sister kept going “hey can I use that knife you carry?” So at the end of the day when she folded it and handed back I said to just keep it.
These make great gifts for anyone. The meadowlark and robin are fantastic for people who work in shipping/freight. The 8cr is tough but pliable and it’s full grind tapers to so thin that even filled they perform great. My last one got resharpened one time.. that’s it. And I used it daily.

What a snob! Lol literally everything is better on the meadowlark except the blade steel. Def not worth 3x the price.

I question your judgment when you say a $60 knife is the best edc knife out there

For everyday tasks and not wanting to mess up expensive knifes. The delica is perfect. It's good enough to do everything you need while not messing up the blade of a 300$ knife (I feel similar for the rat 1-2 if IAM in wet conditions like fishing, camping back up, hunting)

Nick

Nick Shabazz T agradecco tu respuesta, muchas gracias
      Spyderco tengo 3 modelos
      Ambitious...70 euros
      Persistence...78 euros
      Polestar....105 euros

+cuddlesdapeaceman357 It's an objectively better knife than the Z-Hunter from the Inexpensive vs Cheap video, but by a small enough margin I had to think about it. If not the winner, damned close!
