I bought the Raven 2 along with the Crow 2 because I'm a Game of Thrones fan a few weeks ago, to my surprise both with the CTS-BD1 steel, and I have to say i am loving them both. I already had a lightweight translucent blue Manix 2 and fell in love with the BD1 steel on it so much I bought 2 more and i have them sitting in a draw waiting to be used, so needless to say boy was i happy when I flipped open both knives and saw they contained BD1 steel. I would recommend both of these knives to any one looking for a cheap, dependable, well-made knife.
Thanks for reporting the handle thickness. It's become the main factor in determining what leaves the house in my pocket. Websites are overloaded with knife dimensions but rarely (if ever) mention it.

Buy some new bushings and swap them out. I did this with my Spyderco Cat and it helped out with it feeling better to open and close, plus I made a ramp for the detent to ride on which made closing it a lot nicer
I love my Raven 2. I found this review after looking at it for about 6 months and this really got me to pull the trigger! I found one (the last one in stock) at Sportsmans and had to grab it. It hasn't left my pocket since.
The Cara Cara 2 in FRN would round you out very well. It’s almost 4” blade is great for bigger jobs that need a slicer blade. They cost $35 now and are worth it. I’d get one before they raise in price again.
when I decided I needed a quality pocket knife, spyderco appealed to me because of the "out side the box" desing, and made in CO USA! when I picked up the military model, my first thought was yes! Not an entry level knife, but imo, skip the china knifes and dive in head first, you won't regret it with spyderco knifes. I've only had this knife for 2 months and I'm saving up for another spyderco, these things are sweet! I could go on all day about china vs usa knifes, the bottom line is, everyone needs a spyderco! it should be a law to own one. :)

This was a great video. Thanks for posting. A while back I bought a Manix 2 lightweight, but ended up returning it. Recently I was considering purchasing it (or a regular Manix 2) but I heard about the Tenacious as a cheaper alternative, I almost ended up ordering one but then I ran into your video and got my Raven 2. Very happy with it.
It's a great knife, Byrd Raven2 BD1; I own one, just purchased a tenacious and waiting for it. Another great clone is made by the Chinese company Ganzo/Firedbird. It has 440c steel, bit thinner than byrd on par with the tenacious. It's a similar steel than 8crMov13, personally don't really see too much difference between the steels, but have to see yet. 440c clone of tenacious with an axis lock at just over $25 had to gives a go, quite impressed with it.
Finger choil is the bomb. how could someone not like it? It helps the handle facilitate your hold on a blade the way a lanyard facilitates your hold on a handle. I wish the knife had a wire clip and the price was still $45.
Nowhere on planet earth is there a Byrd Raven 2 with that steel for $42 !!!

Great vid. I own both blades and hands down the Raven 2 is my go to blade. The Raven is so ergonomic and feels great in the hand.

I disagree.. I have had 4 Byrd 8cr13Mov knives and not a one has gotten any rust. Not even a speck of it.. it's why I don't mind the steel anymore.
Finger choil is a huge + for me, doesn't matter what knife it is I always like having a bit more control, I like the Raven it looks awesome and seems like a no brainer steel wise.

Great video. I like the way that Byrd looks, and I will have to pick one up, but I still love my Tenacious, which to me, is pound-for-pound or bang-for-buck, the best EDC folding knife in the world.

They didn't have a raven 2 at the store so I bought the Tenacious. Before I buy a knife or any tool I like to have it in my hand. Maybe the Raven is better but, to me it wasn't an option. Anywho good review.

I personally really like the ergonomics of the tenacious. I find that I yields fantastic affordance.
The forward pointing handle like that of the Raven makes cutting in a simple punch grip less effective in favor of a more point centric. This means that the user must use the choil to gain better support of the blade to use it hard. Additionally, the more simple ergos of the tenacious allow it to be pinched more readily allowing the control of the blade angle to be more readily manipulated. This allows it to make a better kitchen knife, as well.
To put it simply the Raven 2 is less of a general purpose work knife and more of a point centric EDC blade. So to say it again: wish they just upgraded the steel on the tenacious.
+Matteo Fina it's something that a lot of the these knife reviewers always seem to miss. A better fit in one type of grip = less general usability. It may be more comfy now but try using it some other way and your gonna be sorry.
Oh well. Some people are just less worried about the skills to use the tool than the tool itself.
I have two Tenacious. And the way I use my knives, I just can't find that much difference between 8CR13MOV, S30V, S110v, and CPM 20 CV. I'm not saying the Chinese steel is as "good" as the US or European super steels. But I can get a really sharp edge on my Tenacious, and it holds that edge plenty long. Perhaps if I used my knives harder I would have a different opinion, but these are EDC blades for me primarily. For hard use I use a fixed blade.
I am not a fan of forward choils. Silicone washers on a liner lock? I'll stay with the Tenacious, which has a larger cutting edge and more belly.
But to each his own.

+Andy A Yeah, unfortunately as as Scout Leader and working at a Scout camp, I had no choice. It was either use a folder for your knife duties or don't use one at all. If I wanted to use a knife hard it had to be a folder. Enter the tenacious: a great folder camp knife that was fairly inexpensive. I've actually chopped (more like activated slice) and batonned things with that knife. Chest leaver cutting through inches of hardwood was not unusual for me. The knife was great in all expects baring edge retention; hence, the reason why I would have loved that knife in a better steel.
+macmurfy2jka yep, can completely understand under those circumstances. I just wonder if a "super steel" would be as good as a high carbon tool steel on a fixed blade for the application you're talking about. You had to use a folder. Glad to hear the Tenacious was able to take batoning.
I have both and they are both amazing but I prefer the tenacious for the line of work I’m in. I work in a plastic molding factory and have to cut up boxes and the blade on the tenacious rips through it like nothing better that other peoples razor blades
I like this kind of video that questions the establishment and presents new ideas. The Byrd Raven 2 looks like a great knife. However, I noticed that they are around $50.00 and the Tenacious can still be had for $35-40. In fact, I bought another Tenacious about 2 weeks ago for $33.00. Tough to beat the value of the Tenacious. Again, great video, as always.
The Raven has a much better steel, they are aware of this as they sell them both. Different markets. Tenacious is made for anyone who wants a Spyderco but won’t spend much money. The raven is a hard use working knife.

In typical fashion, the newer Byrd knives (at least the meadowlark) is the cheaper steel. If you look hard enough you can find the cts version but they are $50 to 60. Not as much of a budget knife and more money than the China spyderco branded knife.
It is interesting the Raven 2 has been out for so long with very few reviews especially when it is such a good knife and a close competitor to the Tenacious. I have had my Raven 2 for 6+ months and love it but consider these to be 2 different knives (actually I consider the Raven to be more of a long handled Persistence). For me the Raven 2 is a well made, awesome EDC which beats the Tenacious in almost every way except cutting edge length and ergos in hard use. As someone with med-lrg hands using a hammer grip with the forward finger choil and bearing down on something it is not all that comfortable and feels awkward compared with the same position on the Tenacious. Its hard to explain, the only part of my middle finger touching the handle is the fingertip so has very little purchase on the handle making it basically a 3 finger grip (and the pocket clip creates a hot spot). It's hard to say which is my favorite, I would recommend the Raven but for hard use Tenacious all the way. An updated Tenacious in CTS-BD1 would be awesome.
The Raven 2 is marketed more as a work knife not an EDC. And it’s cause the diehards that critique the opening smoothness and stuff. The Raven is a working knife, thing is a lot stronger then the Tenacious.. but it’s not as smooth opening either. Two different blades completely. The Raven is the knife you get for at work as a pocket knife, the tenacious is a clean EDC option for like boxes and slicing fruits.
The new Polestar in BD1N is one of the best spydercos for the money. BD1N is i different league of edge retention and the grey G10 looks nice

Damnit! I just ordered the Spyderco Efficient because I didn't like that the Persistence and Tenacious don't have a finger choil. It arrives tomorrow and I don't regret buying it, but I do wish that I had seen this video before making a decision.
I'm on the hunt for the perfect liner Lock knife to keep in my EDC rotation, so far I've barely started. I started getting into knives in early December and was planning on my first knife being the Spyderco Ambitious because it was cheap enough to put on my Christmas list. But the thing is I was also making a list of knives I wanted to collect. My first knife ended up being the Para 3 with blue g-10 scales and an M390 blade! If you want to know how that happened, then keep reading, if not, skip to the next paragraph. I want my collection to be small because I don't need many knives, so I'm trying to find the best knife of each lock type. The top of that list was the Para 3 because it seemed compression locks are among the most popular lock type, except I don't want to carry around a bunch of black g-10 knives, so I don't want just any ordinary Para 3. I want my knives to have color, my favorite color being blue, so I was on the hunt for a way to get a Para 3 with blue g-10 scales. I looked at a lot of different options; buying aftermarket scales, of which there were very few and are very expressive; buying/making natural g-10 scales and dying them, which is just as expensive and requires a lot more work to get the quality I want; and finally I came across a limited edition run of the Para 3 sold by BentoBox that has blue g-10 scales and an M390 blade! I was instantly in love and knew I had to have it, but like I said, it was a limited run and I came late to the knife game, so they were gone. Luckily, I found several brand new BentoBox Para 3's on eBay, only problem being the buy it now price at $225+ and one for bid from a less reputable seller with a no return policy around $200. I was going to wait until I got the Ambitious for Christmas to decide whether I liked the brand enough to justify spending $225+ dollars on a knife. I ended up panicking after I got in my car to go home from work one night because I got a notification that the only auction for the Para 3 was ending and when I saw that there was only one bidder and it was still at $200. I considered whether I could justify spending more money just because I wasn't sure I could justify spending that much money on a knife in the first place. So I sat there in my car and decided to place a bid for $203 in the last 10 seconds and if I was too late, I would wait to buy it like I planned before, but if I won the bid, I would get the knife for $25 less than I was planning on spending. This all happened like 10 days before Christmas, the shipping was supposed to take 7-15 days, and the expected delivery date was 12 days, so I was still expecting to have my first knife be the Ambitious and have the Para 3 arrive shortly after Christmas, that didn't happen. The Para 3 arrived 2 days before Christmas and my first knife ended up being the Para 3 with blue g-10 handles and an M390 blade.
So now I've got my perfect compression lock knife, the Para 3, and I absolutely love it and will keep it for the rest of my life, but I've also got the Ambitious which is a small budget liner lock knife with black g-10 handles. I was disappointed with the quality of the manufacturing because the thumb hole had really sharp edges and I realized that I didn't like not having a finger choil, but I absolutely loved the texture of the g-10 scales on this specific knife, my Para 3 doesn't feel nearly as good and it costs $160 more. I thought I wanted all my knives to be really small, but I've realized that around 3" is the perfect blade length, so the Ambitious doesn't meet my standards to carry anymore and now I need to hunt for the perfect liner lock knife. I'm hoping that will be the Spyderco Efficient because it's made by the same company and it's in the same budget lineup as the Ambitious and Tenacious, so hopefully it will have the same texture on the g-10 as the Ambitious, but with a finger choil and slightly longer handle. The reason I wanted to try the Efficient instead of buying something much more expensive with better materials is because I just spent $203 on my Para 3, I'm not 100% sure I wanted to spend that much on a liner lock knife or at least not yet, and I found that a lot of liner lock knives don't have a cutout to press on the liner, which I absolutely will not tolerate. That last reason is one of the reasons why I'm sticking to Spyderco knives to find my perfect liner lock knife, main reason being the thumb hole opener. On the more expensive end I am considering the Spyderco Sage with carbon fiber scales and S30V blade, as well as, the GiantMouse ACE Biblio with contoured carbon fiber scales and M390 blade. The Biblio was my first choice, but that was before I realized I can't stand liner lock knives without a cutout to access the liner lock.
I have high hopes for the Efficient, but after seeing this video, if I'm not satisfied I'll look into the Byrd Crow 2. When I finally find the perfect liner lock knife, I'll sell the ones that I didn't like so I only have one.
I do not own any spyderco products, mostly because I am cheap and they are not. I'm a $25 and under for a folder kind of guy. However, your video inspired me to look at other spyderco knives. That said you did mention that the Byrd line of knives were of lesser quality than other known models. My question is: is this no longer the case solely with this model or are all of the "2" knives an improvement? I ask because I am liking the size and price tag on the Byrd Finch 2.
Let me rephrase what I said before. I am not always cheap, I am thrifty but when it comes to folders I AM cheap because to me they are a tertiary tool. Fixed blade, multitool and then a folder.

I always thought it was crazy that we can make the steel here, ship it to China, have the knife manufactured over there and ship it back cheaper than just making it here. I noticed that with rebar as well when I worked in the steel industry. Shipping is not cheap and I don't see how businesses can't mitigate the cost by taking the trans-ocean shipping out of the equation.
Easy and you already know it: slavery wages make the difference. A theoretical communist country which treats his workers with the most ruleless and cruel capitalist system possible.
It's a two way street, here we have greed (manufacturer and employee) plus choking regulations which equals alot of waste. China has inhuman practices, cheap labor no regulations equals little waste high % in profits. Listen I want and expect Americans to have a good pay, but when we are paying folks 20,25,30 an hour to sit and tighten a couple nuts on an assembly line and demand more and more and yet do not do more, what you expect to happen. As a small business man in past I can attest we are our worst enemy , it's called the gimmie bug, gets to a point a manufacturer cannot afford to keep doors open, wages/employee benefits are the biggest expense (by far) in most all businesses. THE reason companies leave US to go elsewhere so "their" dream can stay alive, 2 way street and this is just a small sliver of the picture as there are many other factors, let's break down taxes and regulations and we will be here all night and leave you confused, we are our worst enemy. The more we worry about ourselves and not our neighbor the worse it gets....we never learn. The golden rule has been replaced with the gimmie rule and we wonder.....
Give me from the Tenacious: bushings, spydi hole, the aggressive gimping and from the Byrd: the finger choil and maybe the blade steel, although I have watched a few vids on the 8cr13mov VS v30s on spyderco knifes and the difference was almost non existent so I no longer avoid the 8cr knives now.
Always will choose Raven 2 over any Paramilitary 2, because of tip strength. Every PM2 crack easly, one guy loose tip when his PM2 fall on phone glass. Another thing, i seen tip strength on this video and tip is good. Next, name bought me 'Raven'. Good video, good channel. All the best 🗡💪🏻🍻
I got one on the way after watching this review and a couple others .it looks hard to beat for the money with the blade tho. I like the thick blade with the grind it has and it looks similar to a pm2 but really I just couldn't do the Chinese stee of the tenaciousl .i really love American made knives but there so dang high unless you get something old school like a buck or case which I already have enough of.also I'm pretty sure the bronze washers could easily be ordered if u know the size and changed out in that knife fairly easily if they had to be
They come with BD1N now... damn near S30V preformance for 70 bucks... but they are on clearance because they discontinued them so you can get them for 50 bucks... BD1N is a massive improvement over BD1... at that price the raven 2 is crazy good....
i just got a Tenacious Lightweight fully serrated black. for slicing, food, carbord, the thin blade of my swissTool Spirit plus is perfect. i just needed something dedicated for ropes. for wood i can rely on the sawblade of Swisstool.

It frustrates me when company's mix and match quality items; the Tenacious has a lesser blade steel but a better bushing material and the Raven is just the opposite. It makes no sense.
That's Spyderco for ya. They're my favorite knife maker, but they never give you everything you want... and if they do they make sure to discontinue it quick.

Same applies here. The Raven is a work knife meant to be abused and beat to sh*t, the Tenacious is more of a slicer made to.. slice. You’d get the Tenacious for lighter indoor work for a smooth (but more delicate) knife. The Raven is the knife you use outdoors in the rain and bang around and wipe clean end of day and it’s fine. But.. it’s not as slicey and doesn’t open as smooth, but it’s made to be a hard worker so that makes sense when you think in terms like that. Hope that helps.
Mine arrived the other day and the CTS BD1 Steel was razor sharp out of the box. I'm surprised that Spyderco hasn't pulled the Raven 2 over into their american line of knives.

I watched this video a month ago loved the idea of a 'budget blade' which is crazy because think about it you're getting, g-10, milled out steel liners, lanyard hole, ergonomics, finger choil, reversible pocket clip, tip up tip down carry, and what I consider a Premium steel. All great just too bad no bronze bushing like the tenacious or most of they're other blades but for $50 bucks ill take the Teflon or nylon bushings.

If absolutely nothing else (which clearly isn't the case) The Byrd is definitely more attractive. its like a station wagon parked next to a sports car (maybe not that dramatic) but I do think that the comet hole actually looks cooler than the spy hole
I wanted to like the Byrd more, got it for a buddy as a birthday gift but it felt stiff out the box so I try to take it apart and apparently it has a free spinning pivot pin and there is no way to stop the back from rotating so I couldn't get in there to clean up the action, can't make sure it's oiled right, and can't loctite the pivot screw to the perfect tightness. Granted I don't like my tenacious that much either because the fit and finish seems terrible on it, but not being able to take a pivot screw out is a deal breaker for me. My buddy likes it though, he uses it a ton, and unfortunately the action is still tight.
I have both the Byrd Raven 2 and the Spyderco Tenacious, and the Tenacious is A LOT better, in my opinion. I don't even think it's close.

How does CTS-BD1 compare to other steels? I've only briefly heard of it, and curious at where it stands compared to other steels like AUS8, 440, 154CM etc.

I love my Raven 2, and I got it when it first came out. Stays sharper longer then 8cr13mov and very comfortable. The handle of the Raven 2 reminds me very much of the Byrd Tern (slip joint).

I had my Tenacious pulled out of my pocket and didn't hear it hit the ground because I had ear buds in. was pretty bummed out. Was my favorite knife thus far. Blade HQ didn't have the all black available. So based on this review I ordered the Raven 2. I'll let you know my opinion when I get it. Thanks for the Great review.

So, I showed up yesterday! Seems to be pretty sold on the build. love the thicker spine. gives it a stronger feel, and the lock up is good. Ergos are great. Time will tell if the shorter cutting edge will make a difference on the everyday use.

Just picked one of these up, awesome! I was thinking Para 2 but this fits the bill nicely and at a 1/3 of the cost here in Canada. I know it does not have the sweet compression lock but I can live without. I can't say enough for the quality of these Byrd knives. I have only purchase 2 Spyderco's, a Cat and a Chaparral. I returned the Cat and the Chaparral is nice but the quality is no better than any of the Byrd's I have bought. I have a Meadowlark 2, a Tern, and now this Raven 2 and I can say that other than steel in the Tern and Meadowlark they are great knives. I actually really like the Tern as an EDC. Because of this knife I may buy the Crow 2 as an EDC option. The Raven is just a bit big to carry in dress pants.
other than the steel they are great knives and the Raven2 fixed that, I think a Crow 2 is on the horizon now.

CTS-BD1 huh? That's good enough for me. Phosphor bronze bushings are cheap and easy to install.

Well what do you know, they both cut apples, rope and cardboard and are priced within two dollars of each other. Flip a coin.
The blade steel quality is key here. The Byrd will slice apples, cut rope, and cut cardboard longer than the tenacious.

Beautiful knife but with a little defect: bad centering blade issue.
I tried several times to reassemble it correctly but no way. :-(

Too bad, six years later the price of Raven 2 is $67-$75. Inflation guys, inflation. That is why I am telling my wife all the time I have to buy more knives as soon as possible otherwise we will be victim of inflation. My wife doesn’t seem to be able to follow my logic. Please help.

two and plus years ago! the tenacious opened the door for me,my only problem is it never closed!i must own about 25 spyderco's at this point! about the byrd line,i really like the over all raven 2,but dislike that byrd-beak! put a hole there and i'd own one,vary nice video,thank you.
The Spyderco Tenacious is long overdue for and update (Tenacious 2?) made in USA with upgraded medal and higher quality G-10 and maybe a finger troil.

But then you're talking $80+ to be made in Golden Colorado with a better steel. The whole point of the Tenacious is to be a budget knife. You'd be essentially taking the "budget" out of it.... and then nobody would buy it.

+gideonstactical In fact, check out the entire Ganzo lineup. They have one that looks like an Ontario Rat 1, but with an axis lock. Another good one looks like a Lionsteel SR1.
I think that steel doesn't matter all that much in a suburban setting for me and I believe that the tenacious is a much prettier knife and that since steel doesn't matter I'm going with the tenacious
The main purpose of a knife is the blade.....it is what does the cutting.....to say it doesn't matter shows an ignorance beyond belief.

Couple things about the steel. Firstly, BD1 is not a tool steel as stated in this video. It is a budget ingot stainless steel, less edge retention and corrosion resistance then 440 C. Performance wise it is very similar to the tenacious steel. I have owned a Mannix in the steel and would say the edge retention is not noticeably better, and the corrosion resistance is a bit better. I would certainly prefer the Carpender steel but it is not a substantial difference in performance.
bullcrap. bd1 is definitely better than 440c. check out cold steels voyagers and spartan series in bd1. you can make them hair shaving sharp and chop wood do feathersticks and cut cardboard and it will still be sharp long after 440c would be effed

Even regardless of the steel difference (and I think BD-1 is a shade better than 8Cr) the big deciding factor for me is the forward choil. Once you carry a Manix2 you realize that knives without a 50/50 choil are missing a key ergonomic component!

I think the ontario offerings the ontario and utilitac both beat the tenacious for price quality durability and usefulness
They come in at more weight though and to some that is a huge factor. Love my Rat 1 though.
