  • This is my comparison of the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 and the Byrd Robin 2.
Pavlov Sandor did a comprehensive review on the first generation of these knives:

Another issue is legality. In some jurisdictions that allow for public carry of locking knives, there is often restrictions on blade length. While someone might want to carry a Delica, they instead will carry a Robin or a Dragonfly because those two would be legal to carry; whereas the Delica might not be.

This. Just got myself a robin because my University restricts us to 2.5in (63.5mm) blades.

@CaptIvanDanko I would prefer the Ambitious over the Byrd Robin because of the better ergonomics of the handle. But I would always prefer the Dragonlfy over the Ambitious because of the high-end blade steel (VG-10 vs. 8Cr13Mov).

I have the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 FRN in K390 steel. Very nice knife and lightweight and very good steel. I do not use the wire clip , instead I use a Custom leather neck sheath I remove the clip for the sheath. Sometimes I sell the neck sheaths on ebay. The Dragonfly is a nice small compact knife.

thank you for even mentioning my video. i love your channel. you are a true gentleman. i think that spyderco even upped their quality with the second generation of the byrd line. i love the steel liners in these small knives. i would not go hacking through a clamshell with the dragonfly but i would with the much stiffer robin. i just wouldnt want to subject the good slicer to the torsional stress. good vid as always

    Nice overview, well done.
Question: are you certain that the FRN Robin has the same kind of metal liners as the G10 variant? It doesn't look that way on pictures. But if not, then why is it so much heavier than the FRN Dragonfly?

Got a Dragonfly2 in zdp-189, as close to perfect EDC as anything ever made….but I end up carrying a Byrd Robin2.

I find the lock-back dent to be more comfortable to use. I never realized it was supposed to be a safety feature.
The H-1 Dragonfly I own was for a trip I took to RI, which has very strict knife carry laws. I was surprised to find I love the thing. It very rarely turns out to be too small or light for my workplace EDC use. On my personal time I'm more likely to carry my Salt-1 or Stretch.

  • @StefanSchmalhaus
    @StefanSchmalhaus  13 лет назад

@MrDagon007 Thank you! - As for the Robin 1, I know that the steel liners are nested inside the FRN handle. I don't think that Spyderco changed this construction on the Robin 2.

Very thorough review, my friend. That's one attribute a lot of reviewers don't have, they also tend to run off and tell stories in the middle of a review
Also, VG10 looks more frosted than 8Cr13MoV's more satin finish
    Thanks for your effort!

I'll take the byrd everytime, to me no pocket knife is worth hundreds of dollars, now don't misunderstand me, to each their own, but even if I was a millionaire I just couldn't justify spending that much to cut something, just found out about byrd recently, and they'll be my go to from now on. Thanks for the insight though great video...

Great review but the numbers don't add up. Closed length 84 mm for both. Overall length spyderco is 141mm byrd is 144mm. Then blade length you put as 57mm on spyderco and 62mm for byrd..? Measurements for spyderco makes sense but Perhaps either the blade length on byrd is 60mm or overall length on byrd is 146mm? Cheers!

my personal preference is the byrd, I love the robin 2, crow 2 and raven 2... I find the frn versions of the byrd line feel very cheap in the hand, but the stainless, titanium and g10 models are very solid

Great review! Nicely detailed. I have these in my edc rotation and they are great. I have the Robin2 in G10 & FRN and both are great. However, I find my cold steel micro recon spear more often on my person. At 1oz, with a triad lock & a 2" tough as nails blade, it's hard to beat.

i got the robin2 g10 and its absolutely perfect for edc. i bought the persistence and caly3 but both were still a bit big for my personal taste and the robin actually feels a bit better than my persistence for the g10 scales. if i had the money i would have gotten the more prettier dragonfly but for everyday use you cannot go wrong with this knife..

I've set up instant notifications. I stumbled on this one as I just recently picked up the Dragonfly 2 (bought it after picking up a Byrd Meadowlark 2) Hope to be reviewing the Dragonfly soon. • @jussa101

Alexander Binz better steel (I use my dragonfly extensively and have to sharpen it every 3-4 weeks) vs the Robyn which lasts me about half the time. Rust resistance vg10 is more stainless. I'm a fan of the paper clip compared to the byrds pocket clip. Thinner in hand. Other than that the only thing I have against the dragonfly is the cost especially for the g10.
