Thanks, Cameron! There will always be a good balance of reviews of knives, the occasional flashlight video, plenty of medical stuff, and other random EDC related videos like “pocket dumps” and “top 10” videos. I’ve started trying to be more deliberate in how I post my videos so that you’re not getting 5 knive reviews in a row and instead get a nice variety. It’s not always easy but that’s the goal and there’s plenty more on the way!

Awesome video Sean! I love it! What a great little EDC (emergency daily carry). For $27.00 there is no reason emt, paramedics, firefighters, etc should not have a new one every year! I am sure it is a write off as well since it's used on the job. The video was not too long in the slightest so don't even sweat that. It was very informative and applicable to everyone. Well done as usual and I look forward to the next one!

Thanks for watching! I’m the same way, although I’ve come to appreciate them more this week after carrying a partially serrated a bit. I’m still going to be a plain edge guy for sure, but they’re not as bad as I thought they would be for EDC.

Right on! For the price you can’t go wrong with this. I think it would surprise you. And if it gets lost or stolen it’s $27 at the end of the day.
I have been a loyal Spyderco user since 2005. Started with a Native. Concerning the Cara Cara. I have one. Not the size I prefer for carry, but I keep one in the bag. I will say the Meadowlark 2 has replaced my Delicas. All because of the finger choil. More comfortable for me.
Just ordered one to add to my EDC.
I been meaning to buy a fully serrated knife for work sometimes tree branches get in the way ha. Great review of this tool as a rescue tool might buy one to keep in the truck and carry with me when I work outside 👌🏽

Hey man! Yeah I was always the same way but I’m slowly coming around to the idea of serrations in general. Definitely a great option for a purpose built tool like this.
Shawn you make great reviews, and you have some really “unhyped” knives that are kind of “on the radar,” but not something that we may not all know about when we’re about to spend money on a tuff lite as not super reliable safety/rescue knife, or 53 on the spyderco or more!

If you don't like the bigger version, there's always the meadowlark rescue. It's the next size down on the byrd lineup.

I, too, keep a CC Rescue 2 in my car in case of emergency. I agree, it's GREAT for its purpose considering price.
I tested my Swiss Army Knife on a seat belt and it cut just as well. I think any other sharp blade would work as a “rescue tool” for the purpose of cutting seat belt as well. To me, the best rescue knife is the knife you have on you when you need it, provided it’s not blunt (but who’d carry a blunt knife anyway?)

I have a question if you have the space: what are your thoughts about a rescue knife like this versus a rescue hook/"safety cutter" tool? I'm an everyday person who wants to be ready to support others in the case of an emergency, so I don't imagine regular/consistent use of it. I sense that the rescue hooks like the benchmade models (7, 8. etc.) are purpose built for cutting clothes away from someone injured, and would make short work of seat belts as well. Do you have thoughts about going the route of packing a rescue hook as opposed to a rescue knife? I find myself initially leaning that way for a few reasons: 1. reduced weight and size 2. it seems it might be safer/easier to use especially when it comes to cutting clothes for someone with less experience 3. as a non-knife person, comfort-wise, the hooks feel to me more "medical" than "tactical", and might draw less concern from others. Do you have thoughts about this comparison, and rescue hooks in general? Thanks again.
Hello. Those rescue me Tools are great. I bought one for everyone in my family and they all carry it on their keys. I do have a similar rescue knife in the car but in my edc and medical kit i prefere trauma shears. Good health and stay safe.
Yeah, Rhino - everyone in my family has a res-q-me as well. And I definitely wouldn’t substitute this knife for trauma shears, just an additional tool at my disposal and it’s all sharp and toothy and fun!
Hi. I often have need for scissors, but i have replaced them in my edc with shears just because the shears are more versatile. I may however have to order that Cara cara after this review, lol. All the best.

Great review! I enjoyed your insight. I know that $27 is nearly impossible to beat but what's your opinion on the Benchmade Triage. Would it be something you'd carry or is it too much of a "jack of all trades, master of none" at too high of a price point to justify it's usefulness? I was just interested in the various blade configurations and the auto option even though the auto version seems superfluous and at times inefficient. The auto rescue hook, however, did make me grin like a child.
Hi Matt. Thanks so much for watching! I think the Benchmade Triage is a great tool. I’ve handled a few of them. I’m personally a big fan of Benchmade and I trust their products. I think it’s purpose built and as long as you practice with it a bit I’m sure it would be fine as an EDC, emergency, or duty tool. It has a blunt tip, and a partially serrated option (which I would 100% choose over the straight edge).
Does $175 make it cost prohibitive when compared to its utility? No, I wouldn’t say so. We all have our tastes right? Just because I wouldn’t spend $80,000 on a Corvette doesn’t mean it’s not a great car and that YOU shouldn’t spend your money on one if that’s what you want. See where I’m going?
Do I think a $27 Byrd Rescue 2 is a great bargain that is high quality and effective? 100%, bit it’s still just one fish in a vast sea of options. For me personally, I’d rather have 6 Byrd Rescue 2’s than the one Triage.

Carry that as edc on duty as German medic. Not that I cut people out of vehicles everyday but knowing that I could feels good. 99% of the time though this knife cuts paper boxes on our storage... So I'll have to get a second one some day...
BTW, I added a trilobite easycut to my ems edc, it allows me to operate blindly in the dark or behind my back to cut myself out of a strap e.g. in an mva. roughly 30 dollars and has spare blades. While the Byrd is kind of all-purpose, the easycut is personal emergency only. So I know I'll always have a razor-sharp emergency blade on me.

Hold it like you're going to open it, and smash the elevated, rounded edge of the blade into window glass...it'll break.
No seatbelt would be a match for it.

That lanyard is fine if you tie it -/ if it’s an open loop it will catch, but if you make a knot all the way up (multiple knots or what me and my friends call a “lanyard” - tied or braided in different ways). That knife needs no lanyard imo. It’s a large enough and well made handle, and the handle purchase when taking it out of pocket is large enough to not need a lanyard - imo. If you want to carry that badass bras you definitely should!!
That’s a great point, Jon. You’re right, if it’s a loop style lanyard like mine was it could be a problem but a braided or tied type wouldn’t hurt one bit. But I also agree it’s large and grippy enough that it’s not really necessary unless someone just really loves lanyards.

That is an interesting blade. Does seem easy to cut seatbelts noticed you started from the part closest to handle and seemed to go up and toward the front of blade. Seemed to cut nicely. Would you recommend it over the rescue me when dealing with a hysterical person. Like someone who sees their significant other or child they believe to be dead next to or behind them?? I know unfortunately even if car is destroyed airbags deployed and all that seatbelts still unlocked. How do you cut someone out upside down. My niece was a passenger in a car that rolled. She unbuckled and fell on her head to roof of car. She wasn't hurt but if you expect someone may have neck , head, or spinal issue how do you extricate them from that?? If you just cut belt they will hit roof pretty hard. On the rescue me does the glass breaker work off spring or compressed air?? If not what would you recommend as a glass breaker in a submerged car?? If inside you aren't going to be able to generate much force through the water. Coming from someone that spent a lot of time swimming tools are extremely hard to work underwater. Have other questions but this is going long lol. See why videos do.
Hey, Rick! If you think there is a risk to the victim and they are unable to hold still and you think there is a chance you will injure them you could use something like the res-q-me. I tend to look at the res-q-me as a tool I would use to extracate myself from a burning or submerged vehicle. The Byrd Rescue 2 knife would be more for rendering aid to someone else.
Most often if someone is trapped inside whether upside down or otherwise we would evaluate for immediate life threats. If there are immediate threats like fire, unconscious, etc. then the spinal precautions are not as important. If there’s no immediate life the rest we’d take our time and be as gentle as possible. Have several people if possible hold onto the person as you unhook (or cut) the seatbelt and drag them free from the vehicle. The great thing about the res-q-me is they the glass breaker is spring loaded like a center punch. You need virtually no room to use it. It’s not like you need room to swing a hammer, just push it into the glass and it shatters.
@@stuartharvey2523 Have you ever tried breaking glass underwater. It is not like breaking it in air. It becomes harder to generate the force underwater. If used to it and streamline the shot maybe. It needs to be a straight shot if underwater because the resistance to the swing slows it way down. You may be able to but it is harder than most people think. Not trying to argue with you Stuart you may have already done it if so congrats and let me know if you have. I am just trying to gather information. All the best Stuart.

just got one in 2022 and very difficult and uncomfortable to open with thumb. takes two hands. More difficult is closing it, the thumb release takes a lot of pressure, and two or three attempts. Not simple at all like you knife in 2019.
Bought 2 of these off ebay. Both under normal use has not held up well at all. The points on the blade fold over making the knife dull. Cheap metal for sure. Would not recommend at all. My ozark walmart blade is much better and cost 20$
Just been looking at these knives on Amazon and other european online stors. Best price. Cara cara rescue 48$. Meadowlark rescue. 42$. 😩
Yikes!! I don’t get it. I need to study international business a bit more to understand why something would cost twice as much in Europe than it does here when it’s made in China. Import taxes I’m sure is part of it.
