      Actually they are not, BYRD was made in NAVY'(that's the brand not the real thing)s factory, the NAVY use to be a bigger name in Chinese knife community. It's known to make spyderco style knife with 440C steel. I guess the spyderco company make them use 8Cr13Mov these days because a better steel will be a much treaten to it's high end products. Also they use to sell the same knife with half the price. So basiclly that's what GANZO does now.

      I disagree, their D2 corrodes if you look at it wrong and is far to soft to chip like it does. I think all of that has to do with a cheap heat-treat though. And for $30 all that is forgivable I suppose.

    Very good, very fair review Jeff, as always!
    I have a lot of knives made by Ganzo, Sanrenmu and Brother. I even have a very expensive Justin Gingrich model made by Kizer, with spring-assisted opening, S35VN blade steel and Titanium/G10 handles. A beautiful piece, indeed!
    Yes, I do buy them for their outstandingly low prices, but the main reason is the build quality and the fit and finish of them! I just like the designs they come up with!
    Maybe certain knife company's should consider lowering their prices, not many people have the money they are charging for their products?
    I'm that way now that if it's made in China I will buy it, because I trust it. Never had a bad knife from them yet!
    Let's face it-China doesn't make crap, anymore!!
    Thanks Jeff, God bless you and yours. 🔪🗡️👍👋🤗💛

    A good friend of mine bought a Delica 4 and he couldn't get it sharp. So he was at Bass Pro Shop and had them sharpen it. Bass Pro shop really messed it up and he was fed up with it and sold it to me for $20. It took me awhile to get a usable edged on it. I wound up sending it to Spyderco for service. Now I have several Delica 4.

    Power Cutlery has them in the states.. for about $11.00. And you get them in a few days. That being said, the one I got is stiff and nasty in the action, hard to unlock. Sharp as F, but I have not taken it apart to see if I can loosen things up. Also, an edge or corner of the steel is nearly as sharp as the cutting area of the blade. It needs a ride in the brass tumbler to be de-burred.

    Nice, informative video. I always appreciate that you (kind of like myself, I like to think) are a knife/cutlery fan rather than a knife company fanboy (okay, so I am a bit of a fanboy for KaBar and Ontario - both of which make really good, affordable fixed blades in the U.S.A.). I like collecting (although not always carrying) the traditional slipjoint styles. I don't buy them to trade, sell or try to turn a profit later. I just buy them because I like having the old patterns in my small collection. Of course Case and Buck are great but are sometimes (IMO) overpriced - especially Case and especially when I am often buying them 'just to have'. For that reason I really like Rough Rider knives. Now, fit and finish aren't always the best but luckily I live about an hour or so from Smoky Mountain Knife Works so when I buy Rough Rider knives I just go there and hand pick the ones with the best fit and finish - and I freely admit that there is a lot of variance from one example to the next. My point is that the Chinese 'copies' have their place. Oh, and when you said there were no Spyderco knives made in China (I know that has already been covered in the comments) I had to take my Resilience out of my pocket and double check to make sure it really says 'China' on the blade the way I thought it did.

    One thing I didn't hear mentioned but noticed visually. It looks like the texturing on the Ganzo all goes in one direction rather than having the grip directed toward the center logo as the Spyderco/byrd FRN texturing does. I don't own one of these Ganzos so can't confirm that, but it looked that way in the video.

    I think you are correct.
    I'm new to knives. I have a Spyderco endura m390. But i can't afford anymore, so i am buying the knife you are talking about from Ganzo just so my endura isn't lonely.
    I have other Ganzo that are their own thing, and i learned to appreciate the craftsmanship of ganzo knives.
    I bought an eafengrow thinking it was the same quality as ganzo.
    No, they are not.
    But when cleaning both knives and adjusting them to the way i like them.
    I noticed, that both blades had a yellow/brown over heat mark at the same area of the pivot hole.
    So i came to the same conclusion.
    Whether it is an American company (byrd) or a Chinese company, they all, at times, use the same manufacturers.
    We Americans do the same thing in cars.
    It's at the final place of hands on where quality control takes over. Imho
    I also believe that the American knife collectors are more irate about Chinese made knives than the American companies are.
    As you can see, Spyderco is taking advantage of the Chinese manufacturing by introducing byrd. 😆😆😆

    A few thoughts - I actually like the lockbar design on the firebird a bit better, I wish more manufacturers would adopt something similar as opposed to the rounded dent.
    I've handled/used a few different firebirds. Additionally I have a few friends that EDC firebird designs and some friends/acquaintances who work in the cutlery industry. This is rumor and some speculation (backed up by side by side comparisons of supposedly identical knives), but it seems there may be companies making knock-offs of firebirds. It's not readily apparent and I don't see much discussion about it. Again I must qualify that this is based on my personal observations and second hand rumors from friends in the business. I have two theories about what may be going on. Either there are significant issues with quality control at ganzo OR some company is copying their products (including the packaging). It's small issues like fit and finish, quality of machining & threads, color differences in handle material, etc.

    I am not surprised. When you buy something made/designed in the US, you will be charged with a premium price for the brand name alone. If firebird is affording to sell their knives at half of the price, then you probably can tell that spyderco is making more than half of the money for the price you pay for their knives. So the question is not whether you support your own country's manufacturing and being patriotic and all, but whether if you want to get ripped off by your own country men. Living standard is much higher in US than China, so spyderco can't probably survive if they make less than 50% of the profit, whereas in China, they are more than happy to make less than 5% of the profit. so what do I think? Loyalty to a country or a company is just dumb. We as customers should only be loyal to the quality of a good. On the other hand, I will never support someone whom steals other people's idea and make a profit or name out of it. It's immoral and it's not even political because it's just wrong.

    You've got one up on most knife snobs. They refuse to even check a Ganzo. In most cases Ganzo is superior, either in quality, price, or sometimes both. Now I don't like all Ganzo knives, but I like many of them. My EDCis a GF743M1-CF and it's one super knife. My only gripe is that I believe they produce unbranded clones as well as copies under their own name. It's just a suspicion, but I suspect very strongly.

    Ganzo is now Firebird, afaik. They've been transitioning their branding for about a year and a half. I really love Ganzo/Firebird blades of all sorts!
    Edit: A copy isn't a clone, and I even find Ganzo's alleged "clones" to have enough differences in design and material, especially if we factor out the silhouettes of the knives, to be "inspired by" moreso than "directly cloned." They usually change grind patterns, have differently designed liners, blade finishes, altered lock mechanisms, and so on. A clone, to me, is a 1 for 1 exact copy of an item. Buying a clone is not a moral judgement call, and it is a privilege to be able to decline a great deal and/or great quality on principle.

    It just seems to me that all the American knife companys just don't care about quality, They only care about the money. American quality control seems to me like it's going down the toilet in my opinion. I happen to like Ganzo knifes. I do have a really stupid question as I'm clearly not a knife scientist lol? Is there a difference between cpm154 and 154cm? I hope that not the stupid question of the week lol

    • @DurdleKing
      @DurdleKing 4 года назад +4

      I'm not Jeff, but my understanding is that 154CM is billet steel from Crucible Metals, but CPM154 is particle steel. CPM154 has higher corrosion resistance, holds a bit better of an edge for a bit longer, etc, due to the particle steel formation. They're chemically identical, I believe.

    I was talking to a fellow nife boi, who happens to be from China (and works in a sushi place, go figure) and he says "knock offs" are not viewed the same there as they are here. It, truely, has to do with a history rooted in Confucianism, something about doing things right is more important than doing something new. He said that same mind set, or paradigm, is what kept his country, which far ahead of Europe by the dark ages, to being far behind by the age of imperialism.
    It all came down to, as I understood it, being good at piloting a wheel was more important than reinventing it. So they don't see it as knock off as much as just doing the best thing well.
    If I'm misinterpreting this incorrectly, take it up with him, I'll even give you his name and address (not really), but he's kinda a bad-ass with a bad-ass past, like one of those people who you say "how can you still be happy? How can you still be here?" That's beside the point....

      Who cares what he says? Your friend fed you a line of bullshit. IP theft is IP theft. Should it be illegal? I think not. But call a spade a spade. If it was just about doing something "right", then they'd pick the most simple design and use that on end. They wouldn't literally reproduce every popular design. Likewise, if what your friend said was true, then why use pot-metal and lie about blade steel?

      Ganzo definitely doesn't make them, as I can almost guarentee ganzo doesn't have it's own factory. But it's very possible that they're both made in the same factory that makes many Chinese knives.
      Stuff like this isn't like when spyderco has a usa factory that they own and run, companies take designs to established factories and have then produce the product for them.

    It's weird to me that only with knives do people get up in arms over copies. All those AR15 and 1911s people own are made by the original manufacturer, right? I guess traditional knives should just cease being made as well. Oh no copies are ok then because this or that reason. Someone is either against legal copies of any product or they're not, drawing the line at modern knives because it's their hobby is hypocritical. Why is this a big deal to me? I don't like being looked down on for doing something everybody else does, most people buy generics (inexpensive copies under their own brand) of most products all the time. Go look in a Walmart or Target if you need proof.

    • @cutlerylover
      @cutlerylover  4 года назад +3

      whats is "better" of what seems to stay sharper longer can vary quite a bit on usage and experience, here is an interesting fact however...with 440 series stainless not only does the heat treat matter very much but there is also a range for elements within the series (carbon can be from .95-1.2%, Chromium 16-18%) so not all 440's are equals...the 8cr13mov is more consistent in comparison, with these 2 specific knives tested on the same mediums the byrd felt to dull out a bit faster than the firebird

    • @akcprivat
      @akcprivat 4 года назад +1

      @cutlerylover Hi jeff so cool to actually talk to you :-) I think that it is the heat treat that is bad on mine ore that the steel isn't 440c at all. As i said it gets dull extremely fast. • @DurdleKing
      @DurdleKing 4 года назад +1

      @@akcprivat I can confirm this experience via their D2 models; their D2 is either garbage or amazing. It has to come down to inconsistencies in heat treatment. I've had several models in the 440c that blew me away, though.

    For what it is, I'd trust that marking of 8cr13mov on the Spydie Byrd sister company much MUCH more than that marking of 440c on the Firebird/Ganzo. I'd pay that $5 extra for materials and quality I trust more, than a brand that I've bought from multiple times and had constant issues with their quality and materials. 5 of 7 knives I bought from Firebird/Ganzo had vertical play; all of their 440c models went dull faster than any 8cr13mov knives that I've owned.
    I havent bought a Firebird/Ganzo in a long time, maybe their overall quality went up, but I'm not risking any more of my money on their brand, unless I have the urge to get a $20 auto, on some site that takes more than a week to ship and 2+ weeks to deliver. On top of that, like hell am I gonna trust some shady site with my debit/credit card. I'd trust amazon, bhq, & knifecenter way more with my card than some random ol' site on the internet.
    Happy labor day y'all, waiting for my package of 2 from BHQ.

    I have a problem with companies like Ganzo that produce counterfeits and blatant copies of designs. Doesn't matter to me if its made in China, Antarctica or America.
