Head to Head - Spyderco Para 2 vs Ganzo G729

  • I put the $23 Ganzo G729 up against one of the GOAT knives, the almost $200 Spyderco Paramilitary 2.
    How do they compare? The PM2 costs 8x as much. Is it 8x the knife?
    That's what we will try to answer.

  • @TSGK

    I get that Spyderco has better steel and all that, but my thing with expensive knives is justifying the expense, I would say that 95% of people out there have no justifiable need for a pocket knife that costs more than $30. Now if you are a collector then fine but most people Are not. I have ganzo, knives I have been using for YEARS doing every day normal things that 95% of people woulf do, and they are still in excellent shape , so spending $200 bucks on a knife makes no sense TO ME. Besides I would be terrified of carrying and using it to much. I lost one of my Ganzo knives and replaced it the same day. I do like to support US companies but man, some of these prices for a pocket knife are off the charts. Anyway this is my humble opinion, not putting anyone down or criticizing, just saying that for what I do with pocket knives Ganzo a have been amazing.

      Exactly. Side by side, and materials, the Spyderco is at another level. But on it's own, its a brilliant, well made knife. That it costs $25 delivered to your door, is astounding. 440C isn't great steel, but it was the standard for many years... And its as good or better than any of our Swiss Army knife blades...
      I really like it, and the edge bevel on the G10 scales, makes the Ganzo actually FEEL better in your hand, than the PM2. That part floored me. The PM2 has sharp hard corners, whereas the Ganzo is beveled and kinda rounded. Much nicer to grip hard.

    Ever try hitting it on the spine and seeing if the lock holds? I have a few Chinese axis locks and all would close with light tapping on a bench. If yours does it then it’s either the hump before the shelf on spine is too high and not allowing lock to go all the way forward, so file down a little bit before it drops down to the shelf. • @Speedsix13
    @Speedsix13 10 месяцев назад

    Spyderco costs 10x more than the Ganzo and has that crappy compression lock which sucks. I own both these knives and my Ganzo locks up with no blade play. The Spyderco has a little play. The Spyderco has a better blade and just overall is a little nicer. It’s just not 10x better or even 2x better in my book. If they made a Para with an Axis lock, it would be worth buying.

    • @Daves_Man_Cave
      @Daves_Man_Cave  10 месяцев назад

      I have never had a compression lock fail, they seem pretty strong and I have watched some videos where they tested the strength of various brands and locks, some with weights, another with a 3,000lbs electric ATV winch, and the Sypderco compression lock did very well.
      But to each their own... But the Ganzo is definitely the better value.

    • @Speedsix13
      @Speedsix13 10 месяцев назад

      I didn’t say the compression lock fails. I just think it’s awkward and most that I have had did have vertical blade play. Vertical play really bothers me. Axis locks don’t have vertical play because of the design. I fully trust Benchmade Axis locks because I have a long history with them in daily hard use. My cheap axis locks seem to be good as well so I think it’s just a great design that works well.

    I get so tired of all of these videos where these guys are like, "
    Oh man!" "There ain't nothin' like the Spyderco Tenacious or the PM 2!" "If you don't have a Spyderco knife you don't have anything but garbage." Well..... I beg to differ..... I DO have a Spyderco knife...... I picked it up at the local pawn shop for like $25.00 and yes.... It is a real Spyderco Tenacious. The difference is I am good friends with the owner of the shop and he said he was tired of looking at it in his knife case so he offered it to me at that price to get rid of it. Anyway..... I also have several of these Ganzo 729 models and a couple of others with the big thumb hole on the blade and I also have a Brother version of the PM2 that I found on ebay and paid like $25.00 for. I carried the Spydey for a couple of weeks just to see if it lived up to all of the hype and then I switched to one of the Ganzos....... Other than the lockup mechanism and the elongated thumb hole that is more egg shaped than round I honestly cannot tell a bit of difference in the Spydey and the Ganzo. Both hold an edge well.... Both are not hard to sharpen, both have G10 scales and neither has developed any up and down or side to side play in the blade after prolonged use. In addition to that (and this is probably the most important thing to me) the Ganzo (just like the Spyderco) has brass washers instead of those cheap-ass nylon plastic things that 99% of your Chinese knockoff clones have. The biggest difference in the Spyderco and the Ganzo is that brand new I paid I think $25.00 for the Ganzo and had I have bought a brand new Spyderco Tenacious I would have paid more than $100.00 for it. That is STUPID and I have to question the sanity of anyone who would pay that kind of money for a friggin' knife. With Spyderco all you are paying for is the name. That is it in a nutshell. Sure.... They are very good knives but they are not worth anywhere near what people shell out for the things just to have something in your pocket to open a package with or cut a piece of string. It is the same thing with Microtech knives. I've watched all of the videos where they pound an OTF thru a 2X4 with a deadblow hammer and tie one to a piece of paracord and drag it for 3 miles behind a UTV or haul off and throw it across a paved parking lot and whoopiee! It will still function....... Why would you do that to a knife anyway? Is it really worth $500.00 so you can beat your knife with a hammer then throw it across a Walmart parking lot and it will still work? They still scuff up, they still break, they still get loose parts when you do that so why spend that kind of money for something just because someone else says it is the best? Buy what you want....... Form your own opinion and whatever you settle on that is best for you is the best there is...... Just my thoughts on it......

      Finally an mentally sound american. People just buy expensive stuff because they get bullied by their friends or to show off to their buddies. I made a deal with the Ganzo seller and they gave me a price just below 20$ each G729 if I buy 5.
      I have one and dispatched yesterday my sick dog, very old Chihuahua, with the 729. The knife was to fingernail test sharpness and went between the ribs into the lung aerea of the dog like butter. I did not even believe it entered without any effort but it was in up to the ricasso. Out was even less noticeable. Blood gushed out of the 1 inch slot cut and within 10 seconds the dog was dead even without realising anything. At the stab he felt it and threw his head back a bit but then immediately expired. Even a gunshot could not be more humane.
      That sold me to this distal tapered leaf shaped flat grind blade and I decided toget some more of this geometry blades. In a fight you will not realise if you stabbed another person till the ticasso and pulled it out. It goes in unnoticeable. That is a testimony of an uttermost awesome designed and engineered blade. I doubt other blade shapes can do this. This is an emergency defense weapon specialised in stabbing. This experience sold me tothe Ganzo 729. Was eyeballing the RAT1 Ganzo 727M but the blade geometry is not nearly as genious as this PM2 clone.

I plan to use the 729 as a kitchen knife since it is an awesome cutter and the G7531 as an EDC defensive knife when I go out. The 7531 is an allrounder and excellent stabber while the 729 is an awesome cutter. I just sharpened the 729 with my fixed angle sharpener using only 1500 grit ceramic stone. Do not use other than the 1500+ grit ceramic stone or 1500 grit sandpaper glued to a wood as stone replacement. Sandpaper is a secret way to sharpen on the cheap adapting to an fixed angle sharpener. @EDCandLace Год назад

      Using alox based abrasives on high vanadium carbide steels is really harming the preformance of the steel. Maxamet is diamond or cbn abrasives only. You using the spyderco ceramic/alox rods all you are doing is cutting the surrounding steel matrix and not the carbides. This is a great way to cause the carbides to fracture out the steel matrix (aka carbide tear out). Not to mention alox really isn't capable of cutting steel matrix that is higher then about 66hrc. Spyderco maxamet is ran around 67-69HRC. I've had 5 spydie maxamet knives hardness tested and every one of them was between 68 and 69, the best alox on earth isn't hard enough to cut steel matrix at 68+ hrc.

I used my Edge Pro with TSProf Diamond plates. Those worked excellent even on Maxamet. I’m currently saving for the Edge Pro Diamond Matrix stone set. I’ve read a LOOOOT of really good reviews on them and that they’re even better than the Venev Orion series which are incredible resin bonded stones.
