Twice as fast and as smooth as this so called grinder these guys are selling. You can buy better ones than this. Professional ones with guided holes and real diamond grits for precision grinds(used in robot welding machines for pharmaceutical grade welds) instead of be these silly grooved baby grinders Aaaand they are only showing high frequency arcs. It’s a different ball game when you actually turn on the amps. Remember, these are the guys with the caterpillar welding tutorials 15 years ago..
Learning stuff like this is why I'm apprehensive about just buying a tig and teaching myself how to use it. I did that with a mig 20 years ago to my success, but comparing mig welding to tig welding is like comparing knowing how to change a cars oil vs knowing how to do an engine rebuild
@@asmrmatthew4158 you should sharpen so that the striations run parallel to the length of the tungsten. Whether this is done vertically or horizontally is irrelevant. It can also be achieved uniformly, quickly, and inexpensively using a battery drill and your choice of moving abrasive.

I always use a cordless drill on a stone stone wheel to get the basic shape I want then use my tungsten sharpening tool to polish it to perfection. It’s so perty!
Bought one of those little 3" bench grinders. It has like a Scotch Bright wheel. I tacked a couple pieces of rod to the little table as a guide. Set the table angle and use the rod to keep the tungsten straight and you can easily spin it. Works great, cheap, very portable and no score marks. I have 3 sections for different angles. Don't have to spend a lot of money especially if you're just a hobbyest.
I worked at a shop that just dragged their tungsten perpendicular on a belt sander. Literally cannot tell the difference between that and diamond wheel grind. I've been welding in various industries for 8 years and it doesn't really matter that much.
Waste of money just a grinder which you gotta have anyway and a drill to turn the tungsten is faster and I usually cut all my tungsten in half and sharpen both sides that way if you do touch the metal just flip it and keep going

So what this product is, is a Dremel with a flat grinding wheel and a guide? Why wouldn't I just buy a Dremel? It's literally the same thing minus the guide and it will serve many more functions. Plus you can get a Dremel 4000 2/30 for like 85 bucks instead of this for $130 before shipping and taxes. If you don't have the dexterity to put a point on an electrode with a Dremel then you should probably pick a different career.
Whats more important is the wheel on the bench grinder, what material it is made of. Tungsten grinders have their use though, they can be portable and high efficiency, being able to grind tungsten in the field is crucial sometimes.
That's why you always grind your tungsten in a straight downward motion and not crossways and you'll never have a problem ! Always grind vertical, never horizontal because the arc follows the grind
Bought this 2 weeks ago and the head bearing is already burnt out and binding. My "3 mirrors" grinder that I bought 6 months ago is still running strong. Very disappointed in the Eastwood, expected better for the higher cost.
I was taught to put the tungsten in a drill and take it to a fine belt sander. Never had a problem with it and really just needed to make sure it didn't crack or get too hot.
If you want a very straight and consistent req would want a more aggressive angle on your tungsten. And with a bench grinder and the proper wheel for it you can get a very consistent profile if you're consistent in your technique
I always use the side after i shape. And use the side of the bench grinder to smothen and groove forward. No one at my shop knows that so i always get a smooth grind.

TIG is my favorite and is difficult for some people to master. Unfortunately many amateur welders pride themselves as expert professionals because they can light a torch but they're really not that at all. I think you may be one of them. ASSHAT out. Lol

I did the Amazon 4” diamond wheel, cheapest HF angle grinder, drilled a hole and welded a nut to the guide and basically drilled out a scrap of angle aluminum for a guide. Then cheap HF welding clamp got welded to a muffler clamp, so I can clamp the whole thing to the bench. Touching up a tip I find dremel size grinder ok, but if you want to grind a new point on a pack of new tungstens the torque of even a cheap angle grinder…
Ok if you use that you should probably have a industrial vacuum cleaner sucking the dust away. I had a really neat electrode grinder, could be set in any angel, and had built in filter, so you didn't have tungsten dust blowing around.
Used to bench grind because those tungsten grinders can get pricey.First time using one,and yes they are nice and can get really nice slopes on the tungsten.
I just use a 220 grit ceramic belt on the belt grinder. Angles are whatever you want and much smother than either options shown here. I can get a 12° grind on my tungsten for super fine work if need be.
If you don’t have a lot of money, they sell diamond grinder wheels for 10$ at harbour freight and fit into a dremel or screw gun. You won’t get the precise angle but you will get the smooth tungsten that doesn’t split or wonder. The tungsten grinders work amazing and definitely worth the money but when I just started out and was buying everything I needed, little things like this can get you by until you can get the proper tools for the job.
I get them pretty good with the bench grinder. Put the tungsten in your drill and get er done. But I will say the Diamond wheel and guide were one of my favorite purchases cause then your dead on. I mostly use thoriated tungsten which will emit alpha particles so if your grinding them be careful.
This video just popped into my feed again. I won't repeat my opinion again. I just noticed something I didn't see before. You clearly sharpened the one on a grinder. It had a sharp point. And then you smashed it on something. I'm assuming the metal top of your welding table with a hammer, and blunted the tip. You can see how the tip mushrooms out from the grind angle.
It’s the grit of your grinder in the direction of your grind marks if you burn it fast while you’re grinding your tungsten, then your arc will swirl. If you have straight lines you’ll get a straight arc and that’s why when you weld aluminum you want to ball the tip because it’s a different arc shape.🎉
And for those of you who don't know that's a great product they're selling there but they make a wheel dresser Ford bench grinders to put that centergrove in that extra fine grinding wheel for the bench grinder so that you can make a ultra-smooth grind on a Tungsten
Use a high grit silicon carbide wheel on a bench grinder like 220 grit. Green wheel gets ate up quicker but it works smooth and fast... Black wheel will last longer but don't grind as fast... Tungsten is no problem for silicon carbide
The 800s is a very capable machine, if you are willing to pin the throttle everywhere you go. I rode one in the sand dunes for years and it could just about make it anywhere I wanted to go.
I have this tool... it's handy you can use other methods but you run the risk of contaminating your tungsten if it isn't done with a diamond wheel...you can Use Your bench grinder if you want lines and grooves in it... I wouldn't use a belt sander or flap wheel because you WILL contaminate the tungsten and have shitty welds.. that's a fact... this is definitely worth it... Easy-peasy perfect every time...🏁
I keep a flap disk on a grinder at hand, and it only takes about 30 seconds to point a point on the tip that runs perfect welds. it doesn't have to be perfect. Not by a long shot

I put 2, 59 degrees slots on my bench grinder 1 for each wheel, 1 wheel tidy up my tungsten the other wheel sharpens drill bits

Exactly. I've got a norton 150 grit (it's the white variety) wheel and it makes the tungsten look better than this guys grinder.
Try grinding parallel instead of perpendicular to the tungsten you can see the score marks which (also) makes the arc want to follow

Cordless drill and a belt sander gets the best results I’ve found. Spin them in opposite ways and it’ll come out almost perfect.
Just watch out for the dust, it can range from toxic to straight up minorly radioactive. Always wear proper breathing protecting!

Heres a tip when using a bench grinder. Put it in a portable drill and spin it while grinding.
This is what I’ve always done too.
Use the side of the grinding wheel for a nice smoother finish. I sharpen my knives on my bench grinder, but i use the side. It works really well

Yeah I picked one up when I started using the tig process on my machine. It’s a fantastic repeatable way to easily keep your tungsten clean and sharp.

Bench grinder gives me very good results. Don't use aggressive wheels unless you dipped but then finish with something finer.
Now to polish the tip with some 6000 grit and see what that looks like
I put out decent welds even on a bench grinder, just as long as your tungsten in north and south, it's still a decent arc
if you can weld don't matter how you sharpen it.

Use a worn out 120 grit pad on a DA/orbital sander. Hold the sander in the air and the pad will spin
You can get a good smooth grind if your experienced on a belt or any grinder…
120 grit flap disc at the correct angle is good for most welds.
Lanthanum tungsten is the best because it can be used on steel and aluminum the startup and arc is smoother too
