Just cover that pvc will the Rolls of twig you can buy at garden centres. Will provide shade. Don't forget to seal the join from house to roof with clear silicone to prevent any drips. I've done it lots of times and it looks nice and rustic. Good luck 👍
Jasper - the hole saw for cutting the 100mm hole in the masory should be connected to an sds drill with a ratchet system (so you don't break your wrists) and not a drill / driver - that's why you smelt the burning out of the motor. It is always easier to put in tubes before you cement the walls, perhaps a little foresight would help. Also with the shadecloth, put it above the plastic, it should have been light in colour (as light colours absorb less heat), and make the fixings strong so that it doesn't blow away in the high winds there.
Hi Jasper, with glass green houses we used to white wash the glass, cooled the temp and stopped the scorching of plants. I bought a few cheap fans to move the warm air around. Which surprisingly does cool it down. Looking good, another job ticked off your list. Stay sane and safe.❤😊
Yes that would be my solution, however if you could incorporate a few windows that could be propped up this would allow the air to circulate. The fans would also bring relief.😅
Jasper, Diego Leon (RUclipsr) uses timber battens pegged into the ground. It would be quicker using that method. He also uses steel reinforcement and connects them together to maintain rigidity with the separate poured sections.
well done jasper on the work your doing at the moment in the kitchen etc i love watching all your renovations and hate it when the video ends cant wait to see what it looks like when its all finished so keep them coming please and i understand your heat too as i live in australia we have it here too it gets right up in temp here way over the 40 deg mark so keep your sense of humor and your pool and you will get through it more vids please hoo roo jasper 💗
Hi Jasper, great to see you are still working hard, you know you can get those rolls of raffia on a roll think that would of look good and keep the heat down too, is the net sufficient enough? Sometime you have to experiment, to find a solution. The kitchen is coming on great, I remember when my late husband was alive and we had to raise the floor in the old kitchen by quite a lot did not realise just how much cement was needed at the time and of course the drying period. Many inches and he was impatient to get the tiles down, I am getting there with my reno now, but I know on your own working can be very slow as you only have one pair of hands and the heat will slow you down, I would volunteer but I think I am getting to old ha ha. Hope you have someone soon to help you, it nice to watch you and then it motivates me for tomorrow again. Good luck, take care now.
Of all the comments this is the best suggestion, although they could take some time to grow - so if Jasper starts now - they will be beautiful and fruitful in the future.
Try an elastometric white coating on those plastic panels. The white coating reflects the sun away and stops the decay of the panels caused by UV rays. It will seal the panels really well extending their life and will really make a difference in the temperature on the patio. I use this product a lot of solid material roofs like tile or even membrane, but it is not recommended for asphalt shingles which have to breathe to stay dry. Here is the info: 1...Elastomeric roof coating can be used on plastic: 2...Elastomeric roof coating adheres well to polyester plastic panels. 3...Elastomeric coatings can protect PVC roofs from water penetration, UV radiation, and harsh weather conditions. 4...Elastomeric coatings can extend the life of a roof by protecting it from the elements and preventing the underlying material from deteriorating. 5...White elastomeric roof coatings reflect sunlight, which can lower interior temperatures and save on energy costs. 6...Elastomeric coatings are applied in liquid form with a roller, brush, or sprayer. Enjoy your videos! I use shade clothe on open slats above a patio often but always above. If I were a younger person I would buy along side you in the land of my ancestors.
Staying cool must be a real challenge. If I were living in a climate like that I think much of my energy would be put toward creating shade everywhere I needed to go outside. I guess wildfires must be a problem if there water bombers flying over.
Live and learn! Respect for the hard work under the blazing Portuguese sun. Those pools were a great idea to prevent overheating! Sweating is also healthy and increases feel good endorphins! Enjoyed the video. There's never enough room in a kitchen, it seems.
Very entertaining video as always.I love how well you treat your dogs, they even have their own mini swinging pool during summer. So many people treat their pets badly so its great to see persons like you.Parabens.
Here in Portugal people build those porches but use flexible solar panels instead of plastic tiles, they are darker, produce energy, and give a fairly decent shade.
Goed bezig Jasper.
An idea, remove all the plastic roofing, then put new beams on top of old beams so you have an air gap between tiles and roof height. Now put 3 steel and 1 plastic roofing sheets along your new roof.
I live in Australia in a similar climate and I have a 11 X 5 metre verandah on the back part gable and part flat unfortunately I have sheets of Perspex in that for light. Let's huge amount of heat in . 90% shade cloth or dble layered steel roof with foam sandwich between . Never Perspex. Creepers or bones are good but tend to be uneven and take a long time plus maintenance. Anyway keep up the good work Jasper.
Here in the States we have a product called Liquid Shade (now: Kool ray Classic) that you apply to glass and poly carbonate greenhouse once a year in spring. It naturally wears off over the course of the season (is environmentally friendly) and will need to be reapplied yearly. Think painting the roof, but you control the level of opacity. Also, doesn't collect dead bugs ;-)
indeed that blond guy in Portugal is the one you mean as your teacher. And your plan for reduce the heat on your terras will fail, because you need the block the sun off the plastic to make it work well.
It looks like we all watch you and Andy, so it was an easy guess. At some point, please give those of us that didn't start with you from the beginning, a tour of your home. It seems to be in segments, possibly added on as previous owners needed more space. Tell us what you plan to do with all the rooms, your garden, and the other properties you've purchased in the long term. Is this your forever property?
if you are trying to cool the room with fan, you need an inlet pipe preferably buried about 2 foot down, the longer the better, that deep down ground temp remains pretty constant, the fan will then pull cooled air into the kitchen, love the shade and coming together..
Sorry about the veranda. I was going to do mine in clear plastic like this too but now I am having 2nd thoughts! Which way is your veranda facing on the compass?
Its Andy from RAL , but you do need to put some reinforcing or your floor will crack, did you put a DPC in? you can use chicken wire for a floor that thin to reinforce, Don't have 2 levels you will be forever tripping
It would have been better to spend a little more time to do the job properly by levelling the whole floor. Then finally, a nice screed. Much easier to clean and maintain and gives you more options with the room space.
I am surprized, you are a Dutchman, one of the countries that produces the most exported Vegetables in the world inside green houses, greenhouses that are build from glass or plastic to create a warm environment for the plants to grow, And what do you build as a place to cool down under, A GREEN HOUSE!, or maybe you just don't have a Broer or Vader that has a farm in Holland. Serves you well, now you are doing what I always have to do, Do the same job twice, LOL! But this time correctly! LOL!
This green mesh on the underside of the plastic roof will not help, I can tell you by my own mistake. You have to do something on top of that plastic roof, not on the underside. When I've did an apprenticeship in gardening back in the early 1990ies, we puth some kinda chalky white "color" on the top of the greensouses. Until winter it'll be washed away by rain, so in winter we got cleard windows without extra cleanng. Maybe this will help? Or something like that: on top of the plastic, and white or reflectant - old bedsheets, rescue-foiliage with the "silver" side upside etc...

I'm too poor to waste money on plastic rubbish! If a job is worthwhile doing then it is worthwhile doing properly. What if you throw a couple of bamboo shade partitions on top of the plastic. Fastened down, they will give you a better shade than shade cloth. Good luck
Andy from Real Algarve Living just did that ridge and skrete thing with the concrete! Did I win??
Real Algarve Living 👊😀
Jasper, I’m no expert but would it not have been better to put the shade cloth above the roof ? Greetings from UK.
With such a low pitch, it would likely affect the waterproofing and if it were to snow in winter, not good.

Ik dacht hetzelfde (maar met bamboe).
wel brandbaar maar snap je idee

This whole adventure you are on looks so neat, I bet your having a great time.

I had the same problem and painted the roof white with exterior paint, and it's been nice and cool ever since.

We did the same thing here in Australia on our patio. It was sweltering hot!! We put a shade cloth over the top for summer and it was brilliant.

That is how buildings are cooled naturally in the desert.
Yes no good plastic, carry on with the good work injoy it good weekend and new week 😅
You need solid metal panels for your roof and insulation underneath
Andy Real Algarve ;) Nice regarding laying the stone floor. Wow you have garbage collection in the ghost town.

Would the solar panels charge on the porch roof and also block the sun from coming thru the roof?
