Fascinating village information, do update regularly, it's like a ' who done it' , but in this case it's a 'who owns it' mystery. You could plot the village on a large wall mural which you gradually update as you discover more. Enjoy your videos greatly, they are 'off the wall'.

We have someone from Portugal at work, i told him i was looking for a place and he said to be very careful as they will steal from you. I have seen a lot of videos of people who have bought land and some of it doesn't belong to them.
That's why you need a local (or someone that speaks and reads portuguese well enough) with legal knowledge to read REALLY WELL the property papers.
There are lawyers and solicitors whou could check the statue of the house/ land ,registration,t due taxes and others debts ,implantion legalities , building licenses etc before you buy so you don´t have any problems after...
they won't steal from you, but they will certainly try to sell it for higher prices, but its not only in Portugal that happens. it doesn't make much sense that they buy it and don't belong to them, as previous comments said : you have many ways to be sure that the land is what is, who's the owner and what's the value for m2.

Interesting tour, where is the dude who was sorting out your garden, he was great, strimming and making flower beds. id love you as a neighbour and to build the perfect paradise with you, we just toured France and was disappointed in the village life, it wasnt what we wanted for our family, your village looks perfect to start what we want.

So strange, folks grasping to the past. Even when it's little more than a pile of failing or nearly failing rocks. You didn't mention this, but have you been able to get a sense of when the town was last an actual functioning town? How long have these properties been abandoned? Amazing the government has kept services available for so few residents.

What in your opinion makes it a not functioning town? There are still people using and maintaining lots of the buildings - living lives there part time and a few fulltime.

I think Jasper should finish his reno and hire out as a manager to help absentee owners get their houses ready for rental or sale... Slip a clause in the contract that he has first right of refusal if they do eventually sell. I've seen such an approach work out very well for a real estate co owner near me in Texas.
Even offering convenient landscape services for absentee owners would establish a line of regular communications that would encourage familiarity which would help owners feel more comfortable in opening negotiations.
People hate the idea of selling to a stranger who will make a 10x profit on their family's land.

This tour was so interesting and informative. I think it was last week that I asked you to give us an update on what you own there and what you still wanted to buy, etc. Hearing the backstories was fascinating. You must have patience to wait it all out, but then, you have plenty to do on your own house. Did you already do a video on why you moved there and why you picked the place you did? I just find it all so interesting. Thank you for doing this.
google maps did a street view of the Town in June 2023 , you are hanging at the gate with the dogs. you are the towns rock star.

A lot is possible in Portugal, I see people selling half of their house, even sometimes with a tenant in it. Glad to hear that you got a lawyer to sort it out.

Enjoyed the Vlog tonight. It was fun and eye opening on the complicated business of buying land in foreign countries. I’d just like a container home near the digger! We all know how awful smoking is and we all like you so much we don’t want to see you hurting yourself. Jasper nice to see all the village again. And also with all the new informations about all the houses. Related to your land where you have the yard two things could ocurred 1st when they were trying to sell you the land without the little house the went to Camera Municipal or Junta freguesia and try to split the land in the part they selled you and the part of the house, and they were told not possible. 2nd option they knew what they were doing and sell you with the house included even if that wasnt true. Like now you have to get rid of the hot potato. Sad. I hope one day you be able to buy all the village and update it like you have doing.
There are many ruins in my village where I was born. Luckily there are still people residing there. I’m going there in September to make renovation plans to the rustic house where I was born in.
Regarding the name property name of Badaneira. It was very common to name to name properties unusual names. I’m not aware of any significance or meaning to the word. I’m sure Maria would know! She’s your personal history book “ Joǎo” 😜

You are certainly part of the village life now and your vlogs will help someone in the future track the history of a heritage that is being lost. It is a shame that with property rights and establishing ownership takes so long in Portugal, it is improving in the more central regions but small villages is still hard to know where and who retain the original registry.
Registro Predial is at the local Camera may hold some information but also, the Portuguese, especially the likes of Maria, still hold strong moral values, they are a fountain of knowledge and maybe it would be good to pull together all of their knowledge about this village, people who lived there and moved away to retain as record for the future.
Some of those who went abroad will not even know they have these rights in Portugal as the inheritance laws are automatically applied 'built into the law'. You may want to pull together different family trees as that be useful information for anyone visiting.
I sometimes think, what is Jasper doing now? but you keep going and despite the mistakes and having to redo things, you are making it work.

I came to say that I would buy that green house with the large tree in front, also that if the owner of the other 'niceish' house got some cold hard cash flashed, it would probably be a different story. People like cash. But then I saw a comment and I decided to add this little morsel. Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that cigarette Smoke, Smoke, Smoke till you smoke yourself to Death. You'll meet Peter at the golden gate, but he'll just have to wait, Cause you've gotta smoke another cigarette. 😂 p.s. I smoke, smoke, smoke it all myself, but am trying to cut it. I live at 6,700 feet above sea level, the stairs are getting harder.
It would be very difficult to learn Portuguese in your town with only a few ppl there. I suppose for all the foreigners who have no interest in learning...it could be a good place. However, how far is the shopping? By car, by foot? Certainly there appears to be no public transportation....and probably no uber/bolt.

Hello, Ik woon in het centrum van Belgïe. Ik had graag eens even uit het land weg zijn. Die olijvenpluk die zou ik wel graag ervaren.Kan ik verblijven als ik met viegtuig of openbaar vervoer kom. Ik heb geen camper. Wel een rijbewijs en ben multifunctioneel. Ik ben ook bekend met off grid. Ik heb mn chalet zelf gebouwd.

The house sold for 600 euros by the Finances a lot of times people who bought it are relatives of the person in debt so after sold the debt is extint and the family got her house back for a fraction of the original debt Lol....
No offence Jasper. but I reckon the little house on your land, firstly that must have been very upsetting seen as you approached her but she still puts up this house for sale (or did she include some of your land for sale)

There is this thing called usucapião.. you should looks into it.. usually when you take care of some property after some years you can claim it.. because many families emigrate no One is around to contest so... Thing is, i know of cases where the owners were around and still got robbed.. you also need a witness or two to do this but in portugal with little money you can do preety much any thing...Im portuguese so i know believe me
Usucapiao aplles when you occupies a piece of land for 20 years continuously without oppostion from anyone...then even without documents/registration you could regist it in your name...

Same here in Ukraine, there are loads of abandoned houses which are inherited by greedy kids who live in the cities or owners who live abroad and have been for decades. They don't want to sell, working themselves to death with a view to retiring here, to in their mind, the place they left behind not the ruin the house had become. We desperately need a home but the greed price and reluctance is massive. Before the war they couldn't give them away now every shithole, often not registered, is worth 15 to 20k dollars.i mean a place which would be categorized as derelict prone to sudden collapse. We're fed up enough to be talking about returning under the bombs. We have an unfinished project there.
