The sentence "I used Unreal Engine as a kid" just blows my mind how far tech has come. First game I made was on a TRS-80 Model 4 (black and white; text only) computer. Just mind blowing the options that are available now. Also I wanted to say, don't give up on animation, if you can make cut scenes in your current style and put them into games that are in your current style (so like, pixel art games with detailed puppet scenes to drive the plot between the action sequences), dude... that's a winning formula. It would really distinguish your game from the plethora of other exploration platformers on Steam. Anyway, whatever you do, this brings me joy. Keep up the good work! 🙂
This video was so cool. The concept and community behind game jams seems so cool and fun, and I've always sort of had a desire to partake in some of them one day. But it's always been difficult to start the process of learning how to make games, and. obviously you can't really join a game jam if you don't know how to do that. It's daunting, but I intend to start really soon. And seeing the entire journey from a lax and refreshing perspective makes it feel a lot less overwhelming to an outsider.
I started game dev with construct 2 too. My school had a game dev club that you could go and learn in construct 2. Later I bought construct 3 and have been making games ever since! :)
Starting a new engine takes just a few steps. Open engine, try and figure out what you don't know about the UI, navigation, (if you're using unreal) blueprints, and then watch some youtube videos. It is important to also spend time in the engine trying to figure stuff out yourself however, you can only memorize so many things from a video.
Holy crap man the amount of work and passion in this video and i only see 2000 views, tbh i thought u were the milly-a-video type until i looked down. Keep the content up your set for great things. Sub earned
Super happy to see how far you’ve come, being your friend getting to come over and see your progress has always been so much fun. Can’t wait to keep seeing your progress
@@Jerbob yeh :) I eventually started learning Java and Python, then found Unity and did that for a few years. My favorite programming language is now Rust, and I'm learning Dart / Flutter to get a job with it sometime soon :)
The journey from not understanding what an "if" statement is to having a complete game is always awe inspiring to look back on. Hopefully we'll see some cool projects in Unreal Engine at somepoint!
hey, i recently discovered your channel and i just wanna say im practicing many things that i am passionate about and your channel is a big inspiration. just hope you know you're making good influences.
What part of game dev do you like the most? Cause it sounds like you've got the most experience in animation and you still do it, but for games. But do you like programming, design more or is it just animating FOR games.
glad to have found your channel, this gives me a lot of insight. i'm kinda feeling the "I don't even like animating" thing right now and wondering wtf else I can put those skills towards
I started doing my dream game as my first project and I'm around month in. Although I later learned on that I shouldn't be doing that as I will probably mess it up being the stupid new developer I am. So I'm learning the ropes by coding 2d games for now.
Got any suggestions for tutorials on networking and stuff? I've had a few project be bottlenecked for me because I get to where I want multiplayer or leader boards and have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to that kind of stuff lol
I love your devlogs, you inspired me to revisit my own game that I’ve been working on. Any chance you could point me towards any resources that you used to create your save system? I have been looking for someone who can point me in the right direction but so far no luck. All the best to you man keep up the great work.
That’s awesome! Kinda depends, for my engine the solution was pretty simple but I just didn’t know how to do it. If you’re using Construct I’d be happy to show you how it works but for any other engine, there’s probably lots of tutorials out there.
@@jonascale Tried to explain it the best I could. Not the best tutorial ever lol but let me know if this covers everything you wanted to know. Shoot me a message on discord or something if you have any questions: drive.google.com/file/d/1UQln-aY01UuV7fdF9BFebohNu67EXCdS/view?usp=sharing
I remember freshman year when you would be working on your games in class. Cool to see how far you’ve come with it.

This is sick. I have always been interested in Game Dev but unlike you I hit a brick wall trying to make my "dream game" off the bat.
I’m glad you talked about game jams. Those are probably what helped me the most with learning how to code.
Love the tiny Animations to underline the Jokes, damn on point

I like your animation style too

Damn your video quality is insane
+1
Dani also motivated me to keep trying to make games
discovered your channel like 20 mins ago, already love it, I'll be sticking around
There's nothing cooler than playing and seeing something you created. You look at it and you are like all this came together because of me.
started from da bottom now we way up 💯💯💯
I made the exact same “hmmm I should make a metroidvania" mistake
"Just keep trying to improve everyday" words to live by :)
I first started programming by teaching my self a visual programming language called Scratch 6-7 years ago when I was 9 :)
Yeah scratch is fun, I definitely messed around with that a bit as a kid too

Also me: disregards everything you said and starts working on a dream game
I hope one day to be able to look back at your progress as greatly as you have been able! Super hyped for the release :)
Even though I just got a recommendation from this channel I am proud of your pursuit for your passions!
Great video! It's awesome how far you've come and to see such a positive attitude with game dev. Keeping things realistic is always best.
Very interesting, I should definitely find some more time to enter game jams, that would help me finish raw prototypes...
Great vid man :)
Was nice to see how your game Dev journey began
Good luck on the next project!

@Jhunter I use fire alpaca as well I thing its underrated but the animation needs an update
Nice video, great work. 👍

Honestly not sure. I still enjoy animation for games because I really like the visual side of things. I like all the aspects of it

Give game dev a shot! Or there’s a lot of other cool mediums that are awesome too

That is so inspiring... Now time for me to ignore your warning to not begin developing a large game immediately! (I might do some game jams at least)
Sometimes you just have to do it lol, let me know how it goes!

do you use unity now?
