11 matches with avg of 15. Still srilanka gave him chances. This is how you can make great players not just by giving 2 or 3 chances. Good lesson for current group of selectors.
He was poor in ODI leter phase of his career Which down His ODI average Quite a bit, Though He has played Almost 450 ODI Which is So Much To Maintain Higher Average, He is one of the gratest Test Batsman Of all time With almost 50average
AB de Villiers had below 20 average in his first 25 ODIs. Mahela Jayawardene & Kumar Sangakkara also didn't have that much good records in their first 3-5 years. Have a look at record of Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan & Mushfiqur Rahim. They also didn't have well enough records in their first 2/3 years of international cricket career. But in last 5 years (2015-2020) they have evolved themselves. They scored so many runs consistently. This is how Legends are made. 😇 🥰❤😍
Mahela is my captain he is my no1 slip fielder..... And good no 4 batsman.....what else I can say........ I really admire you sir..... Please coach Sri Lanka....
A match most Sri Lankan cricket fans from the 90s will never forget.. Umpire Emerson no balling Murali for throwing even when bowling leg breaks, Arjuna finger wagging at Emerson, then taking the entire SL team close to the boundary, England eventually piling up a 300+ score, conflict with Hollioak and Stewart when Arjuna was batting, the brilliant Mahela Jayawardena century and a famous Sri Lankan win with Murali scoring the winning runs... it was all happening.
I see many here compare Mahela and Sangakkara. Don't compare them. They are uniquely different players. Mahela is more natural, deftly talented, improvising, touch player where is Sangakkara is a more hard-working, elegant, stroke maker who has done years of practicing and hard working to improve his game. As many say Mahela didn't fully realize his full capacity. I guess to many distractions (captaincy, his wars against the board, etc) put him off. But he was an astute leader who looked beyond his own batting. And, I also think it was Mahela who paved way for Sangakkara and the co to shine as well. A legend in his own right.
@Mahesh K mahela was a stunning player he plays the ball not jist striking , he was so lethal against spin bowlers and he is the real mr360 , unlike sanga mahela has the ability to play all around the ground without a much effort if he had played for himself instead of his country he would have become the 1st in the list ,
@@RameshKumar-fg7lz What average got to do with whether he is good or not ? The impact he had in the team & in world cricket matters(A successful mumbai indian coach). He led his team to many wins, even scored a WC semi final hundred against NZ in caribean in 2007, then again world cup final hundred against india in 2011. he lost his younger bro to cancer in early 2000s which affected him badly, at that time he was just a walking wicket.
He had already hit a test century, but this was the moment you knew for certain he was going to be an all-time great player. This was the match where Murali was called by umpire Emerson for throwing and this innings took place under the pressure of that event, plus having to chase a total of 300+ which in 1999 had happened but was still seen as nearly impossible. No Aravinda either, he was out injured, Mahela was his replacement, and he had to bowl, too. Sri Lanka did poorly in this tournament so this win by 1 wicket with 2 balls remaining was a much-needed morale boost at the time, and it remains one of the greatest ODIs ever played due to the combination of circumstance and result.
I remember this innings like it was yesterday. Aravinda de Silva was injured and they flew Mahela in to replace him. He ended up winning the match for Sri Lanka. This innings is what made him a legend.
lol hardly legendary with that shitty ODI average. The only thing legendary about him is his name: Denagamage Praboth Mahela de Silva Jayawardene, like his teammate: Hewasandatchige Asiri Prasanna Wishvanath Jayawardene.
the selectors and the Sri Lanka cricket board did a good job back then producing many legends... but now they can't even find a team to win against Bangladesh... so sad about the future of Sri Lanka cricket 🙁
Did you notice even after Mahela scoring his century there wasn't much of celebration. Arjuna was in the other end. Even after Mahela got out he didn't even bothered to watch who's clapping him etc. Reason - This was the match guys, where Aussie umpire Emerson called Murali No ball even after ICC has cleared him. Arjuna threatened to leave the ground and there was a lot of chaos. England took this opp. and scored a 300+. But inside the dressing room of SL camp, they used all the negatives to empower them and came out nothing in mind but the victory. They couldn't careless about personal triumphs. It was much more than that for them. The team members revealed this later on back in SL. Arjuna came back to Sri Lanka and said " We won that game for Murali"
Mahela was someone special. He's shown his character, talents and brains in his early career and until his retirement. Not every cricketer gets selected to the national side will become a star, only few has it.
mahela what a sight to behold. so elegant even in diffence. Definitely in spite of the truck loads of runs he scored he still is an under achiever. This comment is both praise and anguish. Great great talent. In sheer talent I would take aravinda and mahela's name with the same breath. Congrats on a wonderful career sir.
Actually Mahela Full Potential came in Test matches Average, sheer runs he piled up, he has Triple century on his name 374 Runs is his best, Probably More than Odis its Test he has been Match winner somewhere He used to be better than Sangakkara

Rahul Dravid at the start of his ODI career had a even worse record but our selectors persisted with him and the rest is history

Have a feeling this young lad will become one of sri lanka's finest.
Dude this "young lad" is now a retired legend of the game..
Dude how could you not notice the sarcasm.

After 2012 Kumar Sangakkara was better than Mahela Jayawardene

Don't Compare anyone... Everyone has their own skills and talents
Sanga was a lot better after 2012 though

This was the match in which Murali was called for throwing by umpire Ros Emerson, and fittingly, Murali hit the winning runs ❤
