Having the top score doesn't necessarily make it the best performance in the match. Yes, Ricky Ponting scored a double century in their first innings, but it took him almost 450 balls. Therefore, some performances are deemed better despite not having the highest scores.

    • @wanderer-2006

@@Detective313"Undoubtedly, Man of the Match was Ricky Ponting , who amassed 706 runs in the series, emerging as the highest run-scorer. Rahul Dravid, with 619 runs, held the distinction for India. Interestingly, though Ponting outshone with the most runs, it was Rahul who was adjudged the Man of the Series. If the same criterion applied as in the Boxing Day Test for selecting the best player, Ponting, being the top run-scorer, should have been the recipient. The rationale behind Rahul receiving the honor remains a curious aspect."

Used to getup at 4.30AM-5.00AM in the morning when this test series was going on. Dada's 144 in the first test, Dravid and Laxman's magical partnership in the second test, Sehwag's 195 in this test and finally a 243* by the little master in the 4th test . I watched it all through live. I thought after the match was over, Indian team owed Sehwag an apology for losing the match (and letting go of the chance to win the series) after the start he provided. I still think the same after 20 years. Ian Chappel regards it as one of the best innings played in Australian soil. And he is right.

@@intelligentdude7108 true. India did well in the series because of that, I always thought. But, it is about this match in particular, which would have won India the series, had the other players backed Sehwag's super knock on day 1

I did watch this match at TV live by waking up early morning during my college days. After the India's historic victory at 2nd test Adelaide , my expectations gone high. It is treat to watch Sehwag scored 195 runs at first day of 3rd test. Those days Australia is tough opponent and still he managed to score 195. He could have played patiently after the six took him to 195 but Gilchrist set the trap ( Long On field position) and let Katich bowls the same type of ball which didn't connect properly and ends the Sehwag's magnificent innings.
