Was present at the Eden Gardens during the 2001 epic partnership. No wicket lost during a day. But this was on per. Only one country that stood up to Australia those days be it home or abroad and that was India.
I wrote this about Laxman and Dravid: The affair was short and included just two dates; on both occasions it was not witnessed at the ground or seen live on television; and there was a third party. Yet, I was forever smitten with the fling. Love was meant to be, given he is the great nephew of my namesake, the second Indian President, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Such a surname carries weight in the Sub-Continent and VVS Laxman lived up to its expectations. By 2001 VVS Laxman had been an international for five years, but the focus was on Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly; musketeers of the nation’s cricket from opposite corners of the country. Then the Calcutta Test with Australia occurred. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid’s partnership has become the stuff of legend, growing in significance with every passing year, mesmerising Hyderabadi wrists and Bangalorian correct play. It was a typical South Indian celebratory collaboration: mathematical precision in reading the situation, strong spice-infused shots, gentlemanly conduct and unpresuming. A photograph of the pair leaving the field at the end of the fourth day hangs proudly in my study; bats aloft, towels adorning the neck and wide smiles. VVS Laxman was now a musketeer. VVS Laxman repeated the feat, this time playing second fiddle to Rahul Dravid, taking on Australia in Adelaide two years later. Facing 556 and at 85-4 they administered a Die Hard 2 win; lightning can occur twice. Each of their strike rates was a mere 52 to take India to safety before opening up. Solid defence rarely seen in modern batsmanship. I have more memories of Rahul Dravid. He debuted with Sourav Ganguly in 1996 against England. The former made 95, the latter 131. From then on, linked together, until VVS Laxman broke that union after the aforementioned partnerships in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rahul Dravid was classical textbook to the core. Straight bat, organised, technical, structured, meticulous. Tours to the UK in 2002 and 2011 as middle aged pro and senior stalwart showcased the attributes. 217 at The Oval in 2002 was an exhibition of a batsman at the peak of his powers and in full command of his game. The Wall was born. Nine summers on, the true mark of a champion, he composed three tons while the side lost 4-0. Rahul Dravid’s calmness belied his ODI record. In the 1999 World Cup fixture versus Sri Lanka he and Sourav Ganguly decimated the Islander’s bowlers with ferocious strokes. It was embarrassingly one sided. He was a temporary white ball wicket keeper during that period, though thankfully not for long. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid’s runs came when the team needed them most, proof of mental strength and character; a further example from sport, as with science, politics and good manners, of how India depend on the south for glory, innovation, integrity and decency. Appropriately, there was never an opportunity to orchestrate a Die Hard 3; with a vengeance is not the Indian way.
It's impossible to see again such brilliant, elegant, effortless and classic drives💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥 only Dravid, Laxman and Sachin can play such master strokes...
Those days are gone when our players used to play sessions after sessions without failing any wickets and piling up big partnerships and dominating spinners
I still remember someone saying that Laxman's timing is so perfect that hits so beautifully in the gaps that he doesn't let the fielder move an inch and the ball is gone
Look at the placement of cover drive @11:8 Textbook of how to play in Australian conditions seriously Both are legends of the game 🙏🏻 Dravid -patience technique solid defence Laxman -wrist work elegant stylish
Sehwag takes back to back wickets of Gilchrist, Brett Lee at Perth. Late the great Tony Greg “ How come he didn’t play a test prior to this” ( he was out in first two). Truly a difference maker.
Nostalgic hits. Wake up early in the morning and turn on the radio and listen to the commentry. Was not fortune enough have tv at home but extremely fortunate enough to listen to those Border Gavaskar series. Absolute jems. In recent times. I only follow test matches and short format world cups. Stopped watching ODI for a while now.
This is the series where India started turning into a good travelling Test side. Ganguly did the unimaginable and should take all the credit for turning India into a great Test side and also taking us to WC 2003 Final. Post the match-fixing saga of 1999, Indians were leaving cricket and many I knew started hating it. From there, Ganguly built a team of honest and passionate cricketers who took us to several laurels. Thanks Dada.
The flair & ease with which VVS played away from his body (both sides) is unmatched. India held the mighty Aussies. Sehwag 195, Ganguly 143, Ponting consecutive double tons wow
cannot imagine this level of batting against such quality bowling attacks..with 4 wickets down against a mammoth 1st innings total.. and they did it many times.. 2001 kolkata is another example

Two unsung heros were instrumental in monumental innings
So happy to see one of my favorite umpires
"Late Mr. David Shepherd" 🙌
Ya
Those childhood days…when BRITANIA meant a bat manufacturing company for us. This video is 13 mins of pure nostalgia…!!❤️
It's impossible to see again such brilliant, elegant, effortless and classic drives💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥 only Dravid, Laxman and Sachin can play such master strokes...

Old days Good memories Two legends with Extraordinary Skills, Classy cricket
Those days are gone when our players used to play sessions after sessions without failing any wickets and piling up big partnerships and dominating spinners
I still remember someone saying that Laxman's timing is so perfect that hits so beautifully in the gaps that he doesn't let the fielder move an inch and the ball is gone
Look at the placement of cover drive @11:8
Textbook of how to play in Australian conditions seriously
Both are legends of the game 🙏🏻
Dravid -patience technique solid defence
Laxman -wrist work elegant stylish
After Eden Gardens clash,it was best partnership between Rahul Dravid & VVS Laxman 303 runs. They are legends of Indian test cricket team.🇮🇳
I think this was better given that we were playing the invincibles in their own backyard
Fighting spirit in a pure way.. Its so satisfying to watch the whole day of test match 😊
After these Matches, Sachin controlled his cover drive and scored centuries 💯❤️
I will see this all day, what a wonderful shots from these legendary players
Those early morning days 5 am to watch this partnership with out disturbing our parents by keeping tv volume low.. Memories❤
When a nation hoped for another dravid and laxman special and they delivered.
In this series, this partnership did set the tone for the Indian Team
The flair & ease with which VVS played away from his body (both sides) is unmatched. India held the mighty Aussies. Sehwag 195, Ganguly 143, Ponting consecutive double tons wow
This is the team that revived Indian cricket for ever
All great legendary players that one was blessed to watch live on TV and in person
VVS elegance in every shot ❤❤
Masters of cricket on both sides , awesome and simple days..
Those shots were just a thing of beauty.
Sehwag & jaffer/Gambhir
Dravid
Sachin
VVS
Ganguly
What a line up
It was honour to watch India bat from 2002- 2010
cannot imagine this level of batting against such quality bowling attacks..with 4 wickets down against a mammoth 1st innings total.. and they did it many times.. 2001 kolkata is another example
VVS Laxman & dravid on fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 stand
Unique style of Laxman is that if he hit one 4 in an over,he was sure to hit 1 or 2 more 4s in the same over
Rahul Dravid was simply outstanding in this test match.. 233 & 72* completely drained the Aussie bowlers...
After that Epic Test in Kolkata, 2001,
This is Laxman another Best innings. Vs Aus
And also that partnership with Sachin, Sydney 2004
Rahul aka Mr Wall brilliant batsman in his day enjoyed watching a few of his different innings. Back in the day.
Pull at 1:32! Just to say in 2004 I was in a bad way, all of the bad feelings have disappeared and it is now a privilege to watch the game again with a happy mind. In 2004, I could not see the beauty!
This is a classy show from the 2 classy batsmen of test cricket
द्रविड़ और लक्ष्मण जैसे बैट्समैन अब कभी इंडिया को एक साथ देखने को नहीं मिलेंगे
