I don't think it's technically underrated, there is tons of videos on RUclips explaining why this anime is a hidden goldmine of entertainment. But it does on the first read of synopsis look like absolute isekai garbage... which it is, but the story is so self-aware that it flips from a downside to an advantage. I myself never touched that despite being aware of its existence, but then I saw a video recommending the series by chance and then proceededd to watch whole series. Incredible. Manga has slightly better comedic timing at times, though.

it's got a similar issue with overlord where a lot of the tone can be difficult to translate to an anime since a large part of the humor is juxtaposing the tone and content of the characters inner monologues with one another, you really need to read the light novels to fully comprehend how out of touch with whats going on around him the protagonist is, they've also taken some creative liberties with the anime adaptation that I think are less sensible but it's mostly minor thankfully.

I think scamboli made his review a little to early, like only 5-6 episodes were out when he made it and it honestly did just get better and better, even incorporating those inner monologues and exaggerated moments.
My favorite inner monologue moment (spoilers) is during the last tournament of the season where he is sitting next to Princess Iris as she is having a conversation with important people and he’s just like “this is the perfect background character place to be” as the camera pans away from him slowly.

    • @Orphim
      @Orphim Год назад +1

I think he was also a bit disingenuous about that whole thing. The usual complaint about the manga vs anime is that the anime isn't exaggerated enough when there are scenes that were more serious in the LN and the manga made them silly instead. Then the one scene he picks to do his example (hot springs) is actually pretty much the same in all sources and isn't what the manga vs. LN people are talking about. Most of the complaints are usually about him not being overly buff in his past life, where it makes no sense as he was seen as average and wouldn't be seen that way if he was so overly ripped. They're all great for their own things, but the source is the LN, so the manga people really shouldn't be bashing the anime for not being exactly like the manga.

I really enjoy these scenes because you realize and appreciate the fact that even in the most mundane situations, he treats them like a Broadway acting performance, being so overly dramatic and overly analyzed in his acting it all comes full circle into dead seriousness for everyone else... and it just makes me laugh my ass off!

Well, there’s actually extremely significant contrast between Ainz and Cid. One of the biggest is that Cid doesn’t care about Shadow Garden. Not really. At best they’re friends or acquaintances that he role plays with. Ainz feels like a father to the denizens of Nazarick, he cares immensely for every single one of them and would move the world for them.
Cid works immensely hard for his powers. He practices with insane diligence bordering that could be called fanatical. Ainz only learned PvP for a game, and was lucky enough that most of it translated into skills for his new world. Cid knows martial arts and has mastered distance, tempo, and observation to the point he didn’t even have to use magic (spoilers) to kill the hero Olivier, and in the LN went over how he was forced to adapt his martial arts to the existence of magic and the potential capabilities of fantasy opponents.
Meanwhile Ainz just walks though everything in the New World with “high tier physical nullification” literally no effort was made; he’s coasting off innate “cheat” ability. Incidentally something Cid has absolutely zero respect for.
As such, the Vibes are radically divergent between the two series.

Regarding the last 2 episodes being better than the first 2. I noticed that as Cid started realizing that his bs role-playing was actually real the animation improved. Ex: decent but not mind blowing action and a bit slide showy when he's a kid and making shit up. Later when he fully embraced that the cult was real, Shadow Garden was a full military-esque force, and his actions as Shadows held weight you get more fluid fights and stellar action frames ( I am the all range atomic scene near end)
Of course it still stays true to itself with the campiness of reusing certain frames or assets during goofy moments like his NPC blood spiral, but when it's a more serious scene you see it more

Honestly I quite like the anime interpretation of the story. It took a more "as-is" approach than the manga. The manga is fun too, but I feel like more jokes fall flat because you are that much more expecting comedy. For the anime medium, dropping exagerations for the sake of making the world more immersive is good.
A common complaint about light novel adaptations is how every scene just stays at a standstill while characters are busy talking, and it's fair game to cut them from the anime.
One of my favorite anime is Youjo Senki. The light novel is already my 2nd favorite light novel, and the anime completely drops the internal monologues, a lot of the politics, etc, to focus on the fights. This is what makes the anime so good in its medium. If the politics in Attack on Titan seemed too much for you, you're not ready for Youjo Senki. It's not made for anime. Sometimes, it's worth cutting things that don't fit the medium.
For example, the confession scene as seen in the manga would need a jojo-esque format to work in the anime, but it would entirely kill all the effort that was made to integrate every action coherently in the world. A lot of jokes in the eminence take advantage of the format, and they're not in-your-face pretentious jokes. There are visual gags just like in the manga, dialogue-based gags just like in the light novel, but also audio-based gags which are specific to this anime, as well as background-based gags which are not things the manga can do due to budget constraints. For the anime, they took an artistic direction, which was to keep the world as believable as possible, integrating the comedy within its bounds. And imo it works.

I remember reading what I think was the web novel for a while, I don't remember when, or where in the story I stopped, but I'm pretty sure it was when we got really busy at work.
But what I remember enjoying most was Cid coming to his senses and realising just how cringe he was and is convinced everyone is just going along with this to either torture/F with him or that his chunni is contagious and the others have caught it, and that everything is some huge production set up by alpha and the others, and he just can't bring himself to tell them to stop and just keeps going along with it while it continues to escalate.
To me the web novel is the source, and the manga and LN are both adaptations of the source, with a different method of projecting and interpreting the scenes based on the media available.
For the LN they usually have to cut out alot for printing.
While the manga has to use visuals instead of words to set the scene, especially in the first few pages where they had mere panels for the backstory compared to the anime which gave more time to flesh Cid out with visuals, words and sounds to lay the foundation.

Nah boy, the show is great. People seem to think that for something to be good, it has to be some amazing story that blows you out of the water, but that's just not true. For something to be good it just has to accomplish what it set out to do in a competent manner. And Eminence in Shadows does just that, and it's amazing because of that. It just embraces what it is and makes no excuses or apologies for it, and it's backed up by amazing animation and Cid's Chuunibyu fantasy is honestly amazing because he's living out the exact life he wanted to but believes he's not and pretends like he is anyway.
