I bought Final Fantasy Tactics when I was 15 (about June 2002). when I first played, I got about halfway through the first chapter and wasn't feeling it. The only reason I even bought the game was because I was a stupid, silly cloud fanboy and knew that he was in it. I didn't actually start appreciating the game until years later, after playing FF12 and finally falling in love with the world and music. when it came particularly to the music, I remembered the soundtrack of Tactics being beautiful, which led me to go back in ernist. One track in particular has stuck with me, being the hero's theme, a track that marked major points in Ramza's story. It often brings me to one of the strongest moments in the game, Blade of Grass. That moment has always left an impact on me... Ramza, a young man wanting to bring equality to noble and commoner alike. Delita, a commoner seeing the glaring difference between the 2 of them, and feeling useless for it. That was an impactful moment that for some reason drove me to, since starting 16 years prior, pushed to finally see the story to its end. It was to the point where I honestly cared more about Ramza and bringing his journey to a close once and for all, rather than getting Cloud, who was my whole reason for having the game in the forest place.
As I've grown, I've learned to appreciate Tactics, and its deep beauty, including the beauty of a character that originally, I did not like, but grew to love

Even thought he was labeled a heretic and was forgotten by history he prevent the world from getting destroyed by getting rid of the lucavi. Delita also made the world better by getting rid of the corrupted noble system in ivalice even thought he became was he hated most to accomplish that. I understand he was driven by revenge for the death of his sister tetra but I dont think she would have love the person he became if she was still alive to see it. i think what sets Ramza apart is that he has no special powers except "Chant" which him and delita can only use. which is sacrifice HP to give to someone else. it show's Ramza's true power is selflessness above all else. not to mention a good portion of his followers are either followers from the academy, people he saved, fellow mercenaries, members of the Lionsguard and a sword saint. all willing to fight and even die to help Ramza.

Ramza and Delita are some of my favorite characters in any media. They are so complex and 3-dimensional, and their struggle with morality and duty is something i still hold onto to this day. Final Fantasy Tactics is probably my favorite Final Fantasy game of all time. I understand it may not be the best, but in terms of strategy it was hands down leagues above anything else in the series.
Final Fantasy up until that point has always been associated with a 'brute force' play style. Heal and Attack were really the core of your options in these games and not much else. If you grinded hard enough your time attacking and healing would be reduced significantly.
Tactics had elevation, a 'turn based' system that could be manipulated and a more thought out strategy akin to Ogre's (which was far less forgiving).
Every decision mattered in that game. From the Jobs you chose, from the skills you learned and paired, the equipment worn, the tile your characters stood on, the direction they faced, the magic you cast and on which turn, your unit's positioning on the field and even in the worst case an unceremonious death for the character you named, trained and battled with.
The game had a fantastic job system which to this day is my favourite of all time and one of the best stories in the series.
Ramza stands apart from his spiky hair relatives as a character. He's a tragic figure and I think I relate to that more easily rather than the newer Final Fantasy games.

Well, at least until FFXIV retconned Ramza to being forever trapped with Altima anyway...

Ramza is probably one of the best written characters, not just in the Final Fantasy franchise, but in videogames as well. While he does come off as you stereotypical hero it's his compelling journey from ignorant youth to world weary adult that makes him so relatable. Yet in spite of his disillusionment he still finds it in himself to fight against injustice and do right by others.

Yea, this just popped into my brain, Barbaneth adopted Delita and Tietra, gave them a home and an upbrining they could never believe of, fed them from his own table, tutored them, trained Delita at arms and Tietra the courtesies of a courtier. It's understandable that he would blame both Zalbaag and Dycedarg for Tietra's, but treating Ramza like shit? Seeing the downfall of his House is how he repaid Barbaneth.
I did not get the impression that Delita ever thought Ramza was his equal until the very end of the game. Delita is insecure naturally due to his youth. He likes to boast to Ramza how cool he is after Tietra's death, flaunting to Ramza how powerful his new friends are, how he is going to be the hero of the story, and how he is going to become king. It's all about Delita all the time, no matter what or who gets in his way. He literally boasts how he is soooooooo much better than the Noble Lords of the Ivalice and how he will be that guy who saves everyone so he can be loved, not to protect people.
If he was alive after the game, he let Olan burn for writing those papers. Not too heroic. He is JUST as bad as the nobility he claims to be so above

More so than many of the main protagonists in the final fantasy series, Ramza is the one who chose his role in the monumentous events that took place in the game. He was not chosen by Destiny or by gods, he was compelled by his own sense of justice and morality. He did what he did knowing full well that he would receive no praise or fanfare, but that he would set right what was done wrong to Ivalice and her people. Ramza is also the closest to a Leader class character I can think of. His support abilities are OP.
