@@devintheguardian I'm from the universe that the sonic games take place in. I was transported to this universe somehow with a very limited number of robots and ships. Due to the different rules of physics in this universe, my ships couldn't fly even if they had power, and my robots and ships power sources stopped working. Also, certain components of the robots and ships have stopped working as well. I've been able to adapt my technology to some extent, but we're going to need more human support. I need you to share my videos and my channel in order to find people who would support me.
Also, Amy is only 12. It's normal for girls (and boys) her age to like the idea of romance, stan their crush and be a bit annoying. Like, she's a CHILD lmao
Never thought of Amy as a stereotype because she likes shopping, baking and wears skirt or dress. She's supposed to represent the average girl. While not all girls like those things enough do that having those traits makes sense. Its refreshing to see a female character that enjoys doing girly things and will jump into action for the ones she cares about. A girl doesn't have too look tough, act tough or be a tomboy to be proactive or do the right thing. Another way Sega could expand her character if they changed her outfit every so often in non spinoffs. Amy would be the type of person would not have the same look all the time and be aware of the current fashion.
Thanks for watching! Yes, I love that Amy looks so cute and girly, but is actually super tough and strong. Amy actually gets a few outfit changes in the mobile games and they're adorable
Yeah, and I always thought that part of her design change from her 8 year old style and her 12 year old one, was because she was growing up and trying to be more ladylike in an attempt to brush off her childish rascal personality and become more adult and well groomed to try to win Sonic over. So it would totally make sense for her to keep adapting her look.
I like that she is feminine without being shy or meak willed...you can have agency and still be feminine...external strength doesn't equal self confidence or security inside one's self esteem...being feminine doesn't just mean being submissive
Wait a minute Amy has been wearing weights on her arms and feets this whole time? UR TELLING ME THAT SHE'S BEEN HOLDING BACK THIS WHOLE TIME!!? NO WONDER SHE PUT KNUCKLES IN A CONCOSION IN GENERATIONS, SHE'S A FREAKING BEAST SHE'S PULLING A ROCK LEE I SWEAR🤣
I fell like everyone always forgets that in 06, even when it was extremely clear elise and sonic were more than friendly, Amy never turned the situation into an awkward love triangle. She was in full support of elise all the way through. Even though Amy believes her and sonic were destined to be together she had no problems with somebody else falling in love with him too. The "Bad influence to girls" argument is just dumb lol.
Really I think it’s sonic rush that portrayed her that way against blaze that gave her that reputation. Also she was a bit pissy towards Cosmo in sonic x when she first met her and Cosmo asked to see sonic but tbf this was right after sonic essentially admitted his feelings for Amy giving her a rose so it’s a bit more nuanced.
The “bad influence” should only apply to the portrayals and actions that showcase her in turning to violence to get what she wants in a relationship. Because threatening or actually succeeding in hurting someone with a massive hammer is actually kinda toxic? Kinda abusive? Not to mention a grossly disproportionate overreaction to something as little as someone saying the person you’re crushing on isn’t indeed your boyfriend, when the two of you aren’t even official? If Amy’s character was a boy doing this to a girl character he had a “crush” on, there would be no disputing how bad that kind of behavior is. Amy has other good qualities and great potential that are criminally underutilized in her portrayals. But let’s not pretend that the bad behaviors in the bad ones aren’t indeed bad.
@@horakhtythecreator6911 That was addressed in the video. She only does that like, twice. Once was when Sonic could've actually killed her with his recklessness in Riders. She does it again in the Boom series, but her character in that was really not portrayed well due to the skin-deep comedic nature of that era. "Haha woman chase man with big smashy hammer" was most of her characterization
Amy was portrayed the same way during Ian Flynn's run on the Archie comics. When Sonic and Sally got back together, she was completely supportive of it, even saying that she just wanted Sonic to be happy. Amy's a sweet girl (when she's written well, at least).
So...Blaze is basically female Shadow. A reserved character who seems cold and distant who learns to open up and rely on others. It's pretty much how Team Dark became Shadow's new friends
Its always bothered me how Amy is left out, she's one of the main and first characters yet she's forgotten about. When Mania came out I was disapointed she was removed. I really want a Sonic game that focuses on possibly the main four and develops them all. Amy is a wonderful character and has so much potential if they would use her more
It’s a shame that people tend to see Amy Rose as “Sonic’s Stocker.” There really is a lot more to her character than just her attraction to the Blue Blur.
I think you meant stalker, but I am sick of those peeps too. It's like I look at all of the bad portraits of Shadow, and I say he is just a bully, people will of course call me dumb. But If I say the same about Amy, peeps will say I am right.
Yeah like it feels like it’s there for her comedic side, but she has a personality outside of that, but people don’t like to focus on her character, and focus only on her love for Sonic
@@naeshaunedwards7731 its because her "catchphrase" is SONNNIC! People see Sonic not interested A Simp obsessed with him and won't get the hint And she's always left behind Of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles That it seems like she's not as important as they are That's why I love Archie Amy She has more personality because she's given more expression and life People treat Amy how the others see Amy as But from her perspective She's really a good girl That could benefit if she became leader of her own Girl Gang like Amy, Tikal, Cream
Honestly people nowadays are just obsessed with women having masculine traits so a very feminine character like Amy is gonna be bashed. I always adored Amy growing up. She was passionate , empathetic, sassy and romantic. Also it’s funny how people always hate a female character who is straightforward about her feelings .
If the guy isn't a dick there's nothing wrong with a girl being straight forward with their feelings and think about them a lot even if their not with their crush...that's love
I love character who are straightforward about their love, it’s so much more interesting and inspiring than typical “I’d rather die than let them know” or “love is weakness”
Dont think the issue with Amy is how straightforward she is with her feelings, so much as her "romance" with Sonic is often portrayed as onesided with Amy being fairly forceful about it, despite Sonic clearly not having interest most of the time. There might be more things about Amy besides her obsession with Sonic, much like this video addresses...But it is one of the most remebered traits about her because of how prominent it is. Hope that whenever she appears in the movie verse, they tone down the obsession so her other character traits have more moments to shine.
If there's one thing that's always bugged me, it's that people who try to pitch or re-write Amy's character to be "better" always use the words "Now I made her head-strong and independent! She's better now!" And it's like... Amy's ALWAYS been independent and head-strong. Even if her goal is Sonic's heart, she's the one to take the charge or do what SHE wants. She's the leader of Team ROSE, it's even in the name! There's been plenty of instances where it's been shown that not taking her seriously proves to be a mistake; In Sonic 06, she saves Princess Elise all by herself and doesn't even get caught. In Sonic Free Riders, she asserts herself when confronted by Storm and even makes him lead the way so she can find Sonic again. Then there's the whole story of Sonic Heroes. The problem is that people think girly feminine personalities can't be "strong"; every time I've seen someone try to rewrite Amy they turn her into a tomboy, which there's nothing wrong with tomboy characters but that's not Amy.
Every time I try to think of a strong female character that has feminine personality and isn't just "one of the guys," I think of Ellen Ripley. Thinking on it more, Amy shares a lot of those same traits, and anyone who actually pays attention can see that, so anyone who thinks that feminine personalities and traits can't be strong is objectively wrong.
Amy is like a reverse version of princess peach She's defenetly not kidnapped in every game unlike peach, and one of the times she was she was able to escape her prision and she actually loves the hero while i doubt peach even does love Mario at all
(Peach) Mario: It's'a me, MARIO! I saved you Princess Peach, now be my wife! (Amy) Amy: SONNNIC! YOU SAVED ME! Now be my husband... Sonic: AhHHHHhHHhHHhhhH
I hate how they often portrayed Amy as obnoxious and clingy. That's not what she is, she adores Sonic in terms of viewing him as inspiration and she's very supportive and strives for adventure.
If anything, Amy being into “girly” things, is more unique than being a tough baddie, nowadays being a tough bad girl seems to be more common, so I don’t get why people think of it as stereotypical for a female character to be like this
@Erik Bihari exactly what I thought and what appears to be, people care too much to break a stereotype that they want to break EVERY stereotype even if it's positive or doesn't do much of a harm or gain
Fr, im just sick of people writing female characters who trying to be " independent and strong" and all that. Thats just took away all their personalities. Let female do girly things but they can be strong and tough too in feminine way..
I fell in love with the idea of Sonamy after I saw a comic dub of "Who broke it?". There Amy was portrayed as a motherly character, taking the blame for a crime she didn't do and offering to clean it up so everyone can get along again. If this is Amy's personality, then combining her nurturing care with Sonic's undying confidence to do and protect whatever is right creates a perfect couple in my eyes. Not to mention the color combination of blue and pink is always a treat for the eyes.
Remember people: A woman doesn't have to be ""strong and independent"" to be a good example. Not saying being a strong woman is bad, but people treat a more typical feminine woman to be a bad example or something. That's not true. Both sides can be a good example in my opinion :)
True...neither word means anything..women can be strong emotionally and in their femininity which usually means they don't have to be alone because someone will fall for them..wanting to be independent sometimes means just space or wanting to prove something alone or liking freedom of sexuality to change your partner monthly or weekly or nightly...but sometimes it just means coding for i am difficult and bad at relations so I am kinds forced to claim to be empowered alone when I want someone to accept me desperately but don't want to be seen as a loser
If "femmine" means "annoying, shallow, submissive, weak and stupid" ( just paraphrasing, i know that's not actually true ), why do you ask why many don't like "traditionally femininity" Aging, im NOT saying that's true ( and Amy is actually active ), but it just seems like that's what many see "traditionally femininity" as, it's rather sexist in a lot of ways......
@@steamboatwill3.367they think wrong) Therefore, it is necessary to explain to such people so that they expand their horizons, and not push toxic thoughts about femininity to the masses.
When I was a little girl playing sonic adventure, I was really inspired by Amy. You could be sensitive and tough at the same time, and your ability to empathise with people doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a push over. I think characters like this in my youth always taught me to see the good in others, no matter what it might seem on the surface.
when I was young. I didn't like her because I thought she's just making things worse for sonic from SA1. but that part of her character she can make friends with almost anyone. that grow on me over the years and I don't find her as annoying anymore. also on the fact she's also growing up. just wish all the characters were written right like back in the old days. haters: she's crazy, always make sonic's day worse and a stalker. me: *checks out every game* the hell you all talking about? the only times she ever waste his time is at SA1 and SH. but that's only short moments. she never do that every minute of the day. yes I know the comment is a year old.
To be fair, i think that Sonic Riders scene regarding Sonic forgetting about Amy, and Amy attacking him it was more of a comedy gag. So i never took it seriously
@@supersonicfan7514 There is nothing wrong with that, i respect that. Because there is a lot of talk about this kind of stuff on this day and age that we are making this comments, and it's clear who truly speak because they believe this and know that for certain stuff to happen you have give something to gain that other something, and those that just want to have everything and not give up something.
My take on Amy is your take on Amy. I am grateful you’ve made this video. Much of what I’ve said and what I’ve felt over the years is in this video. Hearing it from someone else really helps because of how lonesome it can be as an Amy fan, especially in the past. That and this video is all around phenomenal, amazing work. This deserves attention for being so educational and informal on the subject that is the character of Amy Rose.
Thanks for your kind words 😊 I know what you mean, it can be so frustrating as an Amy fan when other fans criticize her character and those that like her.
See, I always liked Amy, and I don’t think she ever had a personality deficit. She’s cute and stylish, outspoken, fearless and spunky, and she uses the best weapon. My roommate once said “Of course you like Amy. She’s you as a hedgehog.”
I don't hate Amy. I just hate how Sega portrays her sometimes. The fact that she was completely obsessed with sonic never made me enjoy her as a character. Thanks to your video, Amy (Along with Sonic, Shadow, Blaze, Tails, Silver and Knuckles) is now one of my favorite characters. :D
Amy is a awesome character and she's sweet and thoughtful and kind and also she can be pretty stubborn but I'll still love her to pieces she's one of my favourite characters besides Shadow and Knuckles.
Agree about the non-enjoyment. But what this video proves is that she's poorly written and developed. If a character needs an essay to be understood, then there's something wrong about it's portrayal. I came across this video because someone compared Amy and Rivet (because they both have a hammer)and I said that Amy pales in comparison, and this video convinced me even more. Rivet has a real backstory, her personality is clear, and all of her personality traits are beutifully showcased in one single game! Amy needs to get an overhaul, maybe a change of look and a game should have her be in the center of the story with something else than saving the cute little animal (which is another girly stereotype), and being given depth. As much as I dislike Sonic Boom, this is her best portrayal, both in looks and personality.
I see your profile pic is blaze the cat She definitely a character that needs more attention Aleast her personality is consistent compared to everyone else
I've loved Amy since I was a toddler. When I met other kids who loved the sonic series, I almost felt like I wasn't ALLOWED to talk about her. Everyone seemed to hate her and think she was just annoying. Also I love your note on how she was shilled to be annoying by the other characters. I hope Sonic Team and the public give her the respect she deserves. 💖
I’m really hoping they put her in the sonic movies. I think if they wrote her like adventures mixed with heroes and idw comics she would be awesome. Basically emphasize her good traits and don’t over emphasize her love for sonic. No “will you marry me”. I’ll be angry if she’s excluded. Amy deserves another chance.
@@erikbihari3625 Me! I like regular amy she see more original to me, her character and personality. Sure she can be helpless love in with sonic, but not suddenly degree people making out to be, but she still good character. @@sugamamaproud9810. A:I'm definitely glad you think so. B:why is your english so shoddy if don't mind me asking. Yeah she's definitely better than people give credit for!
Thank you! my god I thought I was going crazy because of the overwhelming hate that Amy get’s. Honestly she’s a more interesting character than the other cast.
I love Amy. Amy slander is unacceptable 🗿. Amy in SA2 is enough proof that Amy is a strong female character. She legit broke into high security base just to free sonic. If she really WAS crazy she would have made sonic stay in the prison until he agreed to marry her when she brought up the deal. It’s sad to see ppl think of her as “useless” 😭
I would imagine the original negative comments were probably from boys. I haven’t seen Sonic, but this character sounds so similar to Sakura from Naruto and fans hated Sakura for a lot of the same reasons for a long time, and they were mainly boys hating on Sakura. Which makes sense. Naruto was aimed at boys. And boys probably can’t understand or relate to a girl with a huge crush. They just can’t quite know what it’s like being an immature girl with a crush. Girls act stupid too and see hearts sometimes. 😆 I can only imagine boys watching were only focusing on how nonsensical the girl was being, but that’s just the point. When you’re head over heels as an immature girl you’re not necessarily being logical. Anyways, both this character Amy and Sakura are good characters. Maybe they need to show them away from their crush more or eventually getting more logical as they get over their starstruck phase. But other than that they’re fine.
@@narnia1233 I love Amy as a character, like I do find the over use of the Amy chasing Sonic trope in games weird, but that is Sega not Amy and she has more than enough other qualities to maker he likeable. I find most of the Sonic Heroes version of the characters weird, in fact Amy is probably one of the least weird characters in that game to me, and when written correctly is a phenomenal character, people just write her as a weird stalker sometimes and it overwrites what people see when she can level a high security prison to save someone, not cos she stalks him, but because they are goddamn friends. Buuuuuut I don't really agree with the Sakura point, while she isn't useless, like she is a very capable ninja, her character doesn't actually do that much at the very start. She has a crush on Sasuke which I have no problem with, but time after time she does beat Naruto up. Like genuinely land some punches which send him flying and it may be a gag or friendly, I find it kinda weird she let alone anyone would get angry enough to punch him or anyone down a street even if it is for love. However she grow and develop, she gets training, realises she may not be the best fighter but does have skills in healing jutsu etc, she recognises her shortcomings though she may not work on them at that moment. She goes to the Hokage for that. She genuinely shows a lot of good development, there are just other characters that grow and develop more, like Hinata or are more interesting than Sakura is. Like to me I find Konan, the Akatsuki member a lot more interesting. She is by no means a useless or terrible character, but I wouldn't say Sakura is a good character, she is just decent enough for me to enjoy her interactions with other characters and place in the story. Amy is a character I sometimes love to see on screen depending on her version in the story. I honestly don't really dislike any character, I just have them at varying degrees of, this person is sorta okay, they are okay, this person is pretty decent, this person is good, this person is amazing, and I simp for this person (I will never release this list though I can say there is 0 sonic characters, I have a feeling someone will take this the wrong way and go... "simp for characters, but its sonic? your weeeeeeeeeird" that is not for me, I will never.)
No god but Allah Islam way for peace and the real monotheism Search for the truth and right way with honest heart And ask him for the right way for his mercy.
She really isn't. Anyone who thinks she's a bad influence for girls is dumb. Every little girl has their fangirl celebrity crush and that's what Sonic is for Amy. But other than that, she's compassionate and caring about others. She reunited a Flicky with its family. And helped convince Shadow to help Sonic save the world. Her Personality was at its peak in SA 1 and SA 2 but I do like Sonic Boom Amy too where she's less of a fangirl over Sonic
I think all the Sonic girls were actually pretty good influences. Again they all have their failings in writing being kinda, sidelined as the accessory in someone else's story, but when they got their own moments to shine they're all very strong, self reliant and compelling characters and great role models. Even Rouge is actually a really strong female protagonist and she was really overly sexualized
@dorim ae or rather fell for him in a more fangirly way(when Metal kidnapped her), then became an actual friends and then developed her surface-leveled crush for an actual feelings.
For me, Amy is a part of the group. You can’t just take her away. Whether it’s as a friend or a romantic interest, she’s a part of the core series and the fact she’s still around is because the fans do love her as a character.
My personal hc regarding Amy's 'sonic sense' is that she actually is able to sense chaos energy. Hedgehogs, for whatever reason, in this franchise seem to have a reather strong relationship with Chaos energy. All other hedgehogs we met so far in the series do, so Amy also being somewhat connected to chaos energy does make sense and would explain why she mistook Shadow and Silver for Sonic. It's also to note that Sonic CD is the game that introduced super sonic and with that the concept of chaos control. Amy seems to have some sort of spirituality to her. So her being basically a chaos energy detector without knowing it would be cool
Adding on to the fact she plays around with Tarot cards, fortune telling or anything that revolves around "Spirituality" or energies this would be an actual good twist to her seemingly "average girl" persona.
If I could program i would make a sonic game with Amy as the second lead and this idea would be really cool! I'm thinking of it now and I can actually think of a few scenarios for it.
As a fellow Amy/ sonamy fan, this video was an insightful reminder of all the things I love about Amy Rose, and a fair critique on her exclusion in the game’s narrative. I never realized out of all the main cast, Amy never had a game focused on her growth or her character, she’s been the cheerleader and pep talk friend as always. While she’s more than happy to cheer on those she loves, her fiery spirit will ALWAYS keep her off the sidelines. I do wish you could have further detailed Amy’s ability to compromise and explain to what extent she loves sonic, since the idw comics explains how she respects Sonic’s boundaries while also reaffirming that she loves him for who he is, eliminating the idea that her love is vapid or she’s a “fan-girl”. though, I can see why you left it out since it’s a spin off/ alternate universe branching from the last game in the series, it’s not canon to the main storyline. After the positive reception of boom!amy and idw!amy, Sega’s definitely taking notice of her fanbase and recognizing her importance. we’ve had a sonic mania special about her, plots in the idw series where she takes charge and advances the plot, and most notably, used in clothing lines for puma and hot topic (the latter which portrayed her and sonic as each other’s love interest. which is a HUGE development in of itself). Knock on wood, but I’d say the future is looking bright for our Rose :D
QUICK SIDE THOT it’s always rubbed me the wrong way when the fandom praised Amy for her toned down affections for Sonic in Boom. One of the things I loved about her was her lack of fear in rejection and her complete openness about how she feels towards others. Growing up I’ve always seen that as empowering, especially since I grew in an environment that taught me that girls should quiet their emotions and be more docile. I might be in the minority in saying so, but her open affection towards Sonic is a very important part of who she is. She loves him, she’s confident, persevering, of course she’s going to display her love. it makes sense, it’s an extension of her bold and optimistic nature! Hiding or toning down her feelings towards Sonic seems a bit out of character, it suggests she’s not fully confident or fears rejection on some level. I prefer the modern depiction of Amy openly showing her love for Sonic while also knowing when it’s the appropriate time to do so.
@@potatoes__tomatoes__2993 I totally agree! I love that she's bold about how she feels, it adds into her confidence and how much she believes in herself (and it does come off better when Sonic's more receptive to it as well). Her being scared to tell Sonic how she feels makes her seem a little insecure in a way the other Amys weren't. I didn't go too in-depth with Amy's love for Sonic because I have so much more to say about it 😅 It's another topic that I think could be it's own video. Thanks for watching!
@@taromarshmallow7814 I would LOVE for you to make an in depth video of Amy's love for Sonic and truly their relationship, you already did a great job with Amy overall.
@@taromarshmallow7814 I totally agree with you and Potatoes_Tomatoes on how Amy's openness about her love for Sonic is an example of her boldness, confidence and optimism, it's never healthy to hide one's feeling for anyone, romantic or not, and yes her love for Sonic is an important part of her character but people tend to think that's all there is to her when there's not as you've explained in this video, I pray that Sega will bring back this side of her character and yes, give her and Sonic's other friends the attention they deserve and used to have back in the early 2000s
@@potatoes__tomatoes__2993 OMG DUDE I LOVE YOU, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO DIDN'T LIKE BOOM AMY AS MUCH CUZ SHE SEEMS OOC! Seriously, it kinda ticks me off how people say they like specific versions of Amy, like Boom Amy or IDW Amy, cuz I've ALWAYS liked Amy from when I got obsessed with Sonic X. I always saw her as confident, strong female character who never lets anyone get in her way! Always chasing Sonic, admiring him, waiting for her moment with him, but also doing anything to protect herself and her friends, as not EVERYTHING she does is about or for Sonic, since she loves shopping, cooking, hanging out with Cream, Big, or Tails. Saying Amy loving Sonic is her only personality trait, is like saying Tails admiring and following Sonic is his only personality trait, and nobody would say that's true for him, so why Amy? :/ I will always love all parts and versions of Amy, and will always ship Sonamy no matter what anyone says because after everything Amy's done and grown for Sonic, and how Sonic shows he truly cares for her numerous times (she's not just a fangirl, she's a genuine caring friend) I feel like they deserve each other, they're quite adorable together and care about each other so much! She's always so open about her love because Sonic almost never gives her a chance to show it more properly; she deserves that chance, and deserves to be there, to show she's important and useful and not a nuisance or just an "annoying fangirl" at all! That being said, I love you all and most of this comment section I am so grateful I'm not the only way who feels this way about Amy Rose 🙏
Amy has always been my favorite sonic character, but when people asked me why I couldnt really articulate why. You basically took the words out of my mouth for why she's been my favorite character. I was devastated when she was excluded from Sonic Mania. I always saw the Sonic friendgroup as Sonic Tails Knuckles and Amy. Those four were always the main characters to me and yet she was excuded in mania and it really bothered me.
Listen, you can make plenty of understandable criticisms for Amy, but it is flat out impossible for one of them to be "she has no personality". If anything, having _too much_ personality seems to be a prominent criticism!
Yeah she was so sassy in sonic x. Maybe she could be a bit bratty at times but I liked her. I thought she was funny and imo her flaws make her interesting. The only episode I think she went too far was the planet of misfortune episode with the love ritual. I don’t like how they wrote her in that episode but I can forgive Amy for 3 reasons. 1) sonic clearly already loved her back in that show (he even still cared about her after that episode in the metarex climax). 2) She has saved Sonics life multiple times as well and in the climax she was willing to almost die to go after sonic in that water planet thing. 3) Sega has been trying to course correct her character (IDW comics being a great example) so I like to think she learned her lesson at the end of that episode. So yeah Amy in that show was a bit of a grey character but I still love her.
Amy's determination is what makes her an ideal friend (or more, if you're into the ship) for Sonic. Amy doesn't demand that he slows down for her, instead she's determined to follow Sonic wherever he goes, working hard so she can keep up. It's how Amy went from being a nuisance to Sonic to one of his closest friends. She respects and loves him for who he is and doesn't try to change him, and I think Sonic appreciates that.
That line in IDW about how she doesn’t want to change sonic said it all for me. I think she has grown into an awesome character who deserves more love.
A thing you'll really notice between where Amy is harshly critiqued and where she's considered good is how the characters treat her. In cases where people consider her a nuisance, the other characters treat her the same way. But in cases where she's treated as she is, the characters are also doing that. I believe a big part of why Amy's good traits go unnoticed is because of the other characters' views on her. I think this is video is great because it highlights those good traits, and looks past what the other characters see through a very objective perspective. Amazing job!
I don’t like how they presented her in generations and how sonic was shoving his hand in her face. And then he showed an attitude after saving her because she made a joke about flirting with him. I think that’s a prime example of what your talking about. There is evidence that Amy is and always was one of Sonics best friends but unfortunately they didn’t portray her as such which lead to people thinking Amy was “harassing sonic” and when really I don’t think that’s the dynamic sega was going for.
@@DaGhostToastRoast uh..sonic just little overactive about her joke of show her love affection toward him. He Just showing in calmly way, beside he is alright with her in generation, it just people overactive in the little scene not big deal the whole plot in generation game.it just minor.
"Knuckles is an idiot." I mean if you're judging only the boom iteration of Knuckles, that's actually a well summation of that character. But not knuckles as a whole if you're including all other versions.
I never really hated Amy when I was little. I was indifferent towards her, but I felt intrigued. I've started growing appreciative of her more and more after revisiting the old games. Amy's a nice character and I wish SEGA would do more with her. Also, when Amy gets introduced in one of the Sonic movies, I want her to be voiced by Anna Kendrick.
I feel like her bad reception always boils down to just plain sexism. So many traits are bashed when she shows them but then are celebrated when they're shown on male characters. She's an awesome character with flaws and layers.
I don't know if I'm more grateful to you for making such a strong case for such an underappreciated character or to the RUclips algorithm Gods who placed this underappreciated video in my recommended.
People who have explained Amy to me (never played a game with her in it) completely failed to fill me in on her talents: bringing people together, empathizing with those around her, staying determined through rough circumstances, and being resourceful. Meanwhile, they certainly played up her being "Whiney, weak, and purely characterized by her love for Sonic." I'm glad I watched this video, and learned otherwise. Strange how skewed her image is... and sad. There's nothing wrong with her being feminine or spiritual.
Amy Rose is the most under appreciated and most overlooked Sonic Character. She has come such a long way throughout the years. The amount of hate she has gotten is quite absurd. Amy has grown a lot over the years, and she has done so many great things in the Sonic Series. Amy Rose is My Favorite Sonic Character. She is an inspiration to me, I Love and Respect Amy for who she is.
@@DaGhostToastRoast I was exactly the same way. I didn't like Amy when I was a kid. But after I watched Sonic X, and I wasn't a kid anymore. I took the time to learn about Amy, and understand her. Sonic X is what helped me become a fan of Amy. And I have been a fan of hers for almost 12 years now.

Also can we both agree classic Amy from sonic cd is a massive CUTIE! I loved that sonic mania adventures episode of her taking metal sonic back to eggman. She is so adorable!
I. LOVE. THIS. VIDEO, it's charming to see other fans defend Amy from such exaggerated critisisms, she has also been my favorite for many years but it was not until recently that I decided to express it and search much more about her character, I'm glad I did. I gotta say, the last part left me a bit sad, why is she the only character that never had a story focused around her? Why is she the only character left out when Sega has the opportunity? It also makes no sense that the same fandom that asks for her character to be better, backs off when someone proposes a story revolving around her or proposes a bigger role for her. That's not to say all fans are the same but my experience with the Sonic community has not always been a positive one, in fact, it was more negative than positive. Anyway, personal tantrums aside, this video is amazing and it definitely needs more views. And when it comes to Amy, I cross my fingers that the next game gives her the spotlight she deserves.
Thanks for watching! I think another reason she gets pushed to the side so much is that the franchise has always seemed like it was focusing on an audience of young boys (even though there are fans of all ages and genders), so SEGA probably assumes Amy won't appeal to them.
SEGA has ruined its characters just to make sonic look great. Now the other characters don't have any character development and they are just side characters. Shadow is just a rival, Knuckles is stupid, Tails is intelligent guy and Amy is a girlfriend. These are the only character traits which these characters have now.
I understand the reason for not adding her in modern sonic games but why didn't they add her in Sonic Mania? I was so disappointed by this as she is my 3rd favourite sonic character
@@shivansh3387 To be honest, I also don't understand what Sega's excuse is to not make Amy playable because she had multiple gameplay changes in all the times she was playable, they just have to pick one or make a new one entirely.
@@dragondelsur5156 sega has received some complaints on sonic's friends being playable. Now it is only sonic or someone like him who are playable now. If anything, fans are responsible for the limited characters. Some fans can be helpful too with art and fangames, but there are other fans who put a strain on sonic with their complaints. It's irritating 😒
I think you really have a point with how the biggest difference in the "good" portrayals of Amy (Boom/IDW) is how the other characters treat her. IDW Amy is my favorite portrayal, and a lot of it's because Sonic and friends treat her as an equal. She's brought along on adventures, she's allowed to show her strength and it's shown that even when she's not brought along with Sonic, she's still trusted by them to do her part and go on her own adventures. Like in the _Chao Races and Badnik Bases_ arc, where the goal is to repair Omega: Sonic and Tails go to an abandoned Eggman base to get a cipher for the code, while Amy, Cream and Rouge go to trade for the necessary parts with a champion Chao Racer. Amy's not being left behind, she's doing her own part to help, because Sonic and friends know that they can trust her to do that.
I think IDW Amy is the closest we’ve gotten to sonic adventure Amy but matured. She has priorities. She helps others first and puts her personal desires second. She clearly still loves sonic and has moments of showing it but ultimately she’s grown to respect his space and in result he isn’t bothered by her when she is affectionate. A lot of people complain there was no transition but really considering all sonic and Amy have been through together and plus her being put in this scenario where she thought sonic was gone and eggman took over. I can see how it would be a brutal reality check for her and would force her to have to rediscover her purpose. She probably had a lot of time to reflect past decisions and choices and I think it’s believable that Amy could mature this way. I personally adore what IDW did for Amy and I’m very interested to see if they will do something similar in the games since sadly IDW isn’t connected to future games.
After watching this, it makes me appreciate Amy even more. I can definitely see that Sonic does have feelings for Amy but he’s just too shy about it, it’s even funnier since SEGA did confirm a potential relationship between the two Hedgehogs.
Wait, really!? So they're actually tying the knot, huh? you know what's funny, I remembered watching a video a long time ago about why Sonic isn't *shy* about Amy (basically him not having feelings for her at all) and.... I still agree with that video. It's just that, I didn't realize that Sonic already valued her as a very close friend of his. Which is kind of neat. :)
I think he really do i mean that old manga told us that amy was Sonic's girlfriend and he become a hero that we know because he really wants to protect amy i have that feeling that sonic team take a half of this story and put it in sonic CD and then just forget about it. If it's true i wish they bring it back because this will make Sonic's character being more sense of why he always ok with amy being around.
@@DaGhostToastRoast Although Sonic X potrayed Amy poorly, I believe that Sonic Boom had a lot of potential for Sonamy too while also giving her more depth and character development.
I always thought Amy was the typical annoying love interest and didn't care about her. But then I played sonic adventure and I was shocked, she's super cool, straight up one of the better stories just because she's really fun to see in cutscenes, a standout in a game with not great dialogue. Having played more of the games, Amy is one of my favourite characters without a doubt
Yeah same here. I personally loved her in sonic x. That show changed my mind about her. Before that I only really remembered her sonic rush appearance. She had a lot of really sweet moments in that show that made me really like her like when she made sonic that seashell necklace.
As a male fan of Sonic since i was 7, i have to admit I’ve always loved Amy as a character. Even when yes, most boys hated her 😢 I remember the first game I played was SA2, and thought Amy was a funny character. After that i played SA1 and honestly, as a male fan of Sonic, i remember loving playing as Amy. I thought she was bad ass, loved the Pika Pika hammer, loved running and then bouncing with the hammer lol. I remember when someone told me “you know SA1 comes before SA2 right?” And i thought “what? Why didn’t they make Amy a playable character 😠 “ I want Amy treated better, I loved her storyline in SA1, finding value in herself. I really hope we get to see a future game where she is playable again, a game that reflects the greatest sides of the character while realizing they don’t have to change her too much, she’s always been great! Great video, subscribed!!
I adore Amy as much as a Sonic consumer would. Not saying Im a major fan of the Franchise, but I saw the point when you said, 'Who else in the cast makes Sonic act like this?" Amy has an impact on others, she just wants a chance for them to notice how much she herself can do. -Even if she has a heart for Sonic
why have i never even considered a sonic game where amy’s the second lead? that’s actually a really cool, innovative idea! i’d love to see that someday, they’d not only flesh out amy but her and sonics relationship to each other
Sorry this comment is 6 months late but Yessssss! I’ve grown to love her so much! Am I really the only one who loved her in Sonic X though? People crap on that version so much and really I thought she was funny and cute! Yeah she had some crazy moments but the girl at the end risked her life jumping in after sonic in that water planet thing and in the Japanese version of the show she said “I won’t let you disappear in such an awful place” “we will all go back together to our planet”. You realize in that moment both sonic and Amy could’ve died together and Amy chose to do that. Yeah sure I can see how people can find her annoying but I really thought she had some wholesome moments in that show that make me love her and her dynamic with sonic. Plus the Japanese version of the show is much much better. 4kids really botched the translation and even cut scenes from the show like this video showed. I think Amy on sonic x is under appreciated. Amy as a character is under appreciated.
I feel like Amy is a good strong female character who can be annoying at time but at the same time that's not saying much when most to all of the sonic characters annoying in their own ways.
Friendly reminder she's 12 so her being annoying just adds to her charm because it reminds us how their are in fact kids who act more "mature" will have their moments that reminds us that they are children just like amy.
@@Trashmantrash I'm not speaking Comic wise,I'm speaking show wise (and a little bit of games) she's a literal child so for her to be annoying is normal because that's how some kids will act but still have a sense of charm to them.
@@fbichan9418 That’s another good point. I think the natural character arc for Amy should be as she gets older she becomes more restrained and mature around sonic. I really like how they wrote her in IDW comics even if they kind of ripped off freedom fighters. In the later comics though she steps down from being the leader and does her own thing with her friends so I don’t think it’s fair how people say she’s ripping off Sally acorn. I have hope sonic prime is going to do her character justice.
@@DaGhostToastRoast for her to be ripping off sally acorn would be blaze ripping off shadow since it took years for sega japan to even remotely recognize sally as an actual canon character so that's just a load of bull in my opinion.
As I watch this video, it opens my eyes to Amy's character even more. As a young girl, I didn't really think much of Amy and found her annoying. But as I grew older and a bit wiser, I slowly realize there's more to her character than just being a Sonic fangirl. So thanks for making this video
I feel like another reason people tend to go as fair as to call Amy a stalker is because of how the west tends to portray Sonic’s feelings for the Pink Hedgehog. In the Japanese dub Sonic tends to get shy whenever Amy is coming on strong or being overly affectionate. Sega even confirming multiple times that Sonic likes Amy just as much as she likes him romance wise. But for some reason instead of sticking to this the people here in the west tend to have Sonic be down right annoyed with Amy to the point that sometimes you wonder why he’s even friends with her. (Depending on the game of course) That seems to be a non issue now as it seems the west is now starting to embrace the fact that Sonic does indeed care for the girl and have romantic feelings for her. Even going as far as to hint at it and call him out for it during things like the Sonic twitter taker overs which Are canon.
Fr, like in Japan they really are like a Mickey and Minnie combo and are treated as such, but in the west they portrayed as a joke and change Sonics reactions and character towards Amy and her affections, thus this also affects how the fans in the West see her and why the hate too, calling her ,wrongfully, a fangirl, obssessed and a stalker
Absolutely wonderful job on this video, I wish I had more to add than that I agree completely and you did a fantastic job summing up the frustrations and unfair treatment she's had by the fanbase. Even though for the most part you were preaching to the choir with me, there were still some awesome insights here I hadn't even considered before as an Amy defender - I always just used to say "ignore Sonic Heroes, she's written badly in that one", but your pointing out that ALL the team battles are totally weird and unjustified really adds additional support to the idea of ignoring that one - since it's not even like we're conveniently cherry-picking to ignore Amy's and Amy's alone - you're right, they're all really flimsy writing. Your observation of how she's the only major regular character to never get a game focused on her was also excellent - it's definitely something I've noticed in the simple case of wishing that she did have one, but never thought about how it stacks the rest of the main regular cast against her. It was also nice to hear a clearly-laid out subjective opinion on her validity as female representation from someone who identifies as female and grew up with her as you did. While naturally your opinion is just that of one person, it's still refreshing in contrast to the vast amounts of male criticisers who do little to veil that they dislike her just because she has stereotypical girly girl traits that they're incapable of even attempting to identify with/simply appreciate as a character who is simply different from themselves in some way. (Not to say that it's invalid to dislike "girly" characters simply because it's not your cup of tea, but there are definitely folks out there who hate it on principle, and it's usually easy to tell when someone is one or the other). I really hope this video gains more traction, it was fantastically put together. Looking at the comments, it seems like right now the only people watching are those who didn't need convincing. Much like your point about Amy only getting to prove herself interesting by being given a chance, I hope there's at least a few folks out there who dislike Amy who will give this video a chance too.
Thanks for watching! Even though it seems mainly Amy fans have seen the video so far, I'm glad to know so many of us have similar perspectives on her character. I hope those indifferent to her might shift their opinion of her as well 😊
While I loved Amy as a kid, I did start to hate her as a got older. Though I explained that reasoning in a different comment that’s too long to retype here 😅 Seeing this video made me feel like a big ole idiot. I feel sad that I started to hate her as time went on I’ve heard so much negativity over the years that it made me forget the things I liked about her in the first place I feel bummed out but also happy that I’ve re-found my love for her So I wouldn’t say they were just preaching to the choir since I was an outsider who strolled up to the church to see what was being preached Though I did come to this video with openness to having my mind/views be changed I imagine there are plenty who will look at the title and roll their eyes or reinforce their own beliefs/views in their head without even giving the video a listen There are some people who have made the decision in their mind to see her one way and aren’t interested in seeing her any other way unfortunately I’ve joined the sonic amino recently and seeing posts with different takes and views on each character really has been kinda mind opening I start off clicking on a post thinking “really?? They think THATS the best and most thought out character??” and by the end of it I’m like “omg they ARE the best! I think they just stole the spot as my new favorite character! I never thought about it that way before!” It was crazy too because I’ve kinda been absent from the sonic fandom for years now(with exception to tuning into a few RUclips videos every blue moon from RUclips channels that talk about sonic games and stuff) and when I thought about how busy the sonic amino is and how UNDEAD it is(since many aminos are looking like they got tumbleweeds blowing through them these days) I wondered “what could have fans so passionate about sonic that they’re visiting and posting on this amino everyday?? Don’t most sonic fans hate the games and complain about everything??” But seeing how everyone is still in love with all these different characters for so many different reasons or talking about cool obscure merchandise or facts that I never knew about... it’s kinda amazing and kinda touching actually It’s really resparked my interest in all things sonic and it’s really interesting to see all the different perspectives people have to every character and game or mascot costumes and merchandise Even the chat rooms are pretty fun. It’s nice to hear fans having casual conversations about the games or characters People make fan comics and have people dub over them in the characters voices... it’s just really neat As a kid,(back in the dreamcast days) I didn’t have any one around me that was into sonic. If I told them I was crazy about sonic(watching the shows, playing the games all the time) people were like “huh?? That pixel-y blue guy who goes in loops? Why would anyone be crazy about that??? He doesn’t even talk or have a story” I’ve never really been around a community of people who also are crazy about sonic stuff so finally being able to be around people who enjoy sonic stuff as much as i do is nice. I sometimes feel like “man I’d love to be at a crush 40 concert with you guys” lol Well this was longer than I thought.. bye lol
Finally, a video detailing how Amy Rose is far more than an "annoying character with no personality". Your essay was a breath of fresh hair, and more support as to why I've always found her to be a fun and interesting character. Thank you for sharing this content!
@@erikbihari3625 She needs more STABLE development. Her abilities flip flops all over the place and it’s hard to pin point all she’s capable of (both physically and mentally)
@@redballoon9007. In my oppinion the Best thing they could do with her is make sonamy canon, because it'd give Amy a concrete role within the group and lead to better character development for both(and before anyone who reads This pipes out the same rhetoric about female characters needing more independance, kindly shove it, because that always achieves the opposite and makes them more disposable)! Because there are well written romances that also function well as character development like aya and razer from green lantern.
I completely agree she's one of the most undervalued characters in sonic's history and she's supposed to be a main female character, it's sad I hope they use her more, and she was trending on Twitter recently
I love Amy she definitely had an impact on me as a kid and I still think she's cool she was even the inspiration for when I changed my name(I'm trans) ☺️☺️☺️
one of my favorite amy moments you didnt mention was in sonic adventure 2, when she rescues sonic from jail on prison island. when tails first spotted her on the island, he was like "how did u get here?? its dangerous here!" clearly underestimating her. not only did she get to prison island, a fiercely defended remote military base BY HERSELF, but SHE found and collected the keycard to open sonic's cell. she plays the rescue moment up for laughs like "haha im gonna hold this card ransom to make u marry me" but when sonic says no to the bargain, she respects his lack of consent and frees him anyway, implying she was just joking around. that whole cut scene, i was like "damn this woman got some tricks up her sleeve"
Yeah, what I love about amy is she's girl Sonic She's kinda a valley girl which is a distaff version of Sonic's radical dude and their dynamic seems to be the opposite of Super Mario & Princess Toadstool. That and, something I love about all the Sonic girls is they don't sacrifice femininity to become powerful. Amy can womp ass in a go-go dress and aunno that's important to me cuz I like being badass adorable. I also like Amy's growth, and it feels more important than Tails' growth cuz he always was as powerful as Sonic, meanwhile Amy had to earn it. The biggest reason I fell out of Sonic for a long while was because Tails & Amy wern't playable, and like, I think I'd've slogged through Shadow, Sonic, Unleashed, Colors and Mania if she were a playable option. I guess she's technically playable in Silver's story, but that's not a whole game like in Heroes/SA I really hoped she'd've been playable in Lost World since the myth was only Sonic/Blaze/Shadow/Metal can boost and here we finally don't have a "Hold X to win a hallway simulator" game but nope... I also used to have a huge crush on her when I was a teen XD
Yeah, I love that Amy has such a cute design but is actually so strong and can hold her own in a fight. It'd be great if she was playable in the next game. Thanks for watching!
I wouldn't say tails was as powerful as sonic when they met, sonic taught him how to use spin attacks and they both got stronger together, but what I think makes Amy great was the fact that she made that physical growth on her own, she's a tails without a sonic, yet she managed to level the playing field. Amy along with with knuckles and tails got heavily nerfed after heroes and that's just a shame.
And yeah I agree, playing as sonic alone for too long can make the play style a bit dry, having more playable characters can be refreshing and i hate how sonic team just abandoned the concept.
The people making the Sonic movie have said they want more prominent female characters in their movies and they said they're going to bring in specifically Amy. I prefer the games but I hope they give her a major role in the Sonic movie since they actually took the time to say they want to include her and want a more female presence
The alternate choice would be to make a character specific to the film but some of the staff might have a field day picking and choosing... it doesn't ahve to be Amy, be nice but they can have a fun day with that one.
@@kitelanford I'm also worried about the plot and how many new characters their planning to introduce. Sonic doesn't need he's own Spiderman 3 or a.s.m. 2! Agreed?
Honestly I'd love to see games that revolve around each of the girls. Though, knowing how certain parts of the fanbase can be, I highly doubt we'd ever see it come to fruition. I'd play the hell out of an Amy game.
You deserve waaaaaaay more views and subs, this essay was incredible. I adore Amy and the criticism she gets has honestly never really made sense to me.
“When Amy isn’t included in the club, she starts her own club” YASS 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I love sonic heroes for this reason. In adventure she was relying on sonic to go on adventures and fight crime but in sonic heroes she does it herself and leads a team! It was great development but people downplay it for a stupid fight which all the characters had but only she gets punished for it.
Rouge start fight with te chaotix for stupid reason all because she thinks they has their treasure information, while sonic being stupid start fight with team dark all because the line shadow say in heroes. When never say that for many year his around eggman.😒😤🙄😠
I'm glad I actually watched this. Amy is a great character with a awesome personality but is always screwed by the writers at times. She has a potential that can rival sonic.
Screwed by bad writing but really screwed by mistranslation. 4kids especially butchered Amy’s dialogue in sonic x and made her seem worse than she is. Not that I dislike her in the English dub but her dialogue in the Japanese version is far better and shows a lot more nuance to her character.
I love Amy. I even have an Amy plush! She’s got very good qualities. I wish she can be a star in her own game one day. I mean she’s also an excellent leader. We need more female spotlight in the franchise.
I got the GE Amy Plush. I always wanted one as a kid, and so last year I finally found one on Amazon. They should create more Amy plushies with different outfits like Amy with her swimsuit, her Olympics outfit, and Jingle Belle Amy.
I have a plushy of classic Amy and I got an action figure of modern Amy. I love her. I think she is such an underrated character now. And I used to be one who disliked her as well.
As a fellow Amy fan myself, I just want to say thank you! I can't tell you how infuriating it is to have people clown on her when she's arguably the most influential character in the series. Because of her, pivotal moments in the plot occur and without those moments, such as with shadow and silver to name a few, the stories wouldn't have been the same. She's a great role model and I hate that people couldn't see the traits that she had prior to boom, the sonic mania short, and the idw comics. All traits shown in those iterations was already established in her character years before. Again, this video was great! Even though I'm a guy, Amy has shown me valuable traits and lessons that extend beyond sex and/or gender.
Yeah I think hopefully Amy will see better days and will be appreciated more going forward. I’m so excited to see how they write her in this new sonic prime show coming out next year. Ill say I personally thought she was adorable in sonic x. That seashell necklace episode was so wholesome.
@@DaGhostToastRoast That was a great episode from Sonic X! I just recently re-watch the series in Japanese and it does it hit different. I would love if her character is similar in prime. Nonetheless I'm excited like how you are!
@@chaoscontrolreturns Well I heard Ian Flynn (the guy who wrote idw) is involved with prime and I absolutely love how he wrote Amy in IDW comics. I love that IDW acknowledges how Amy used to be and that she grew up some instead of her just being an alternate version of the character like in boom.
@@chaoscontrolreturns Yeah I will say Amy in X did try trick sonic into a love ritual but I can forgive her since she was willing to potentially sacrifice herself going after sonic in that big water planet thing. I still have a big soft spot for her in that show.
@@DaGhostToastRoast I'm still reading the Metal virus ark but I definitely love how she's written in that! I am familiar with Ian Flynn and many are hoping, including myself, will write for the games at some point! It's a dream, but I think it can happen one day lol
Amy as a character taught me it's okay to be a feminine badass. Most games made the female sidekick a badass, sexy and tomboy. It grew me "not like other girls" phase. Although, when I discovered Amy. I learnt that it's okay to wear a dress and jewellery and still kick ass. I always related to Amy's obsession with sonic as I was also a boy crazed kid. (Although I always assumed Amy was heavily exaggerated). I really loved her
I never got the dislike for amy. Boom amy is my favorite version of the character, but amy has always been a good and lovable character. Also, I had NO idea about the Sonic X subplot with amy opening a restaurant. Why that got cut for the english release, I will never understand. Edit: I say this on almost all sonic video essays, but I would love to see a push for more rouge love. She's one of my favorite characters and is sorely misunderstood.
I only thing I dislike about boom Amy is that she’s disconnected backstory wise from mainline Amy. Like this video said it undermines her character growth. Boom amy is more interesting when you know what amy used to be like. It makes her friendship with sonic more meaningful.
When I first entered the sonic fandom, Amy was one of the first charters i seen, other than like sonic and tails. I wanted to be like her in the ways, of always chasing after her goals. I felt like i could really relate to her in the aspect of always being left behind, i would always have to chase after people if i wanted to be included. I really liked her, but i slowly noticed some others didn't feel the same way, but that never discouraged me to not like her. i love her charter so much and feel like she should have a better reputation.
I always found it dumb how critics react to female characters in fiction. They always say they want a “strong, well developed” female character, but ironically their standards for what makes a female character “good” means making them bland and not feminine. What’s wrong with letting female characters behave feminine? Or giving them love interests, or goals, or you know…a personality?
Regarding the final part where you talk about Amy not being the second lead in any game, it'd be amazing if we got a game similar to Super Princess Peach but with Amy, where we get to see her as the protagonist and also see her go through a character development arc while showing all of her abilities and strengths That aside I love this video SO much, you've made every argument about why Amy Rose is an amazing character (even some I hadn't think about before), and I'm super glad to have found this video, so thank you for making it 💞❤💞
That was a cute video, I agree with your stance, especially since Amy’s always been a fine character. Heck, could you do a Shadow the Hedgehog character analysis vid where you cover Shadow’s history and condemn Sonic Team for the fan-hated direction they took Shadow in the games and IDW?
I really like this perspective. Definitely agree. There was part of her character that really annoyed me but I always thought she was very fiery and I always liked that she said how she felt. I love that she’s happily feminine too. Awesome review
I can't tell you how many times I've argued with people about why Amy is more than just a crazed Sonic fanatic. She's literally like my favorite character right next to Metal and it sucks that nobody gives her any recognition. It also doesn't help that Sega has sort of demolished most of the previous characters archetypes
Funny how, just as you said, most of the Amy slander could've been avoided if she played a more pivotal role in her debut game. Here's hoping for a future game with Amy as the focus, so people can finally shut up about her having no purpose in the series.
Amy the Hedgehog was basically the Ahsoka Tano(Star Wars) of Sonic the Hedgehog series. She was hated by the fans before but now, some fans realized that Amy was actually a great character. One of them is me and being a big fan of her and Sonic ship, I would love to see her in Live-Action appearance in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie along with Shadow the Hedgehog.
I love Amy Rose! I feel like she’s so important as a key member of Sonic’s team and it’s really a shame that she’s so underrepresented nowadays in Sonic media. She’s such a strong and supportive character with so many traits that complete the OG Sonic gang dynamic. I’m so glad you made this video because I completely agree with everything you said!
As a girl who had side interest in Sonic when I was young. I never saw Amy as just pawning for sonic. I mainly saw her as a determined slightly aggressive passionate person and that not to the point of being unkind (mostly). Lovely video (:
a a a this is a great analysis, i love it! it is really well constructed and eloquently put, i love amy’s character and i care greatly for her. i also like how you included the bad portrayals of the characters.
I think people see high femme characters and assume they aren't strong or independent. Amy Rose radiates agency and that's the most important thing a character can have to be interesting to me. A huge role model for me growing up and today
Love this video! Amy has always been a favorite of mine growing up. I've always found her criticisms to be exaggerated and poor. So glad to see people make great content supporting her as a character. Also what you mention about Amy's lack of importance is so true. I was so hurt when Sonic Mania didn't make Amy playable, she already has an established 2d style from the advance series. It's a shame because it seems initially Sega wanted to give her a big part, what with larger role in adventure, her inclusion in advance and Sonic Shuffle, and her redesign. But of course, Sega listened to the complaints and has pushed her to the side a bit. She's there but never important, which sucks.
Amy was actually the first character I saw before Sonic, as a kid I was easily pushed around and was left out. I’ve never played any of the Sonic games growing up though, I watched the shows and read the comics Amy is probably the only reason why I tried to stand out more and take more risks growing up I probably would’ve never met my best friend if it wasn’t for her amazingly underrated personality.
@@ekkylol6974 it's probably the only time he performed a spindash outside of games! Can you believe it? I wouldn't be surprised if turned out to be inspiration for he's movie incarnation's red electric powers.
the main reason she was so hated because back then misogyny was EXTREME. not to say it doesn't exist now, but it's not as severe and most of us kind of got rid of that internalized misogyny. kinda makes you realize that a lot of girl characters got hated on for no reason at all.
I'm grateful you made this video, Amy is my favorite character since I knew her on Sonic X and she has hate from de Sonic Comunnity u.u I know she has a lot of potencial as you said, thanks for doing this, my girl deserves better ♡. Greetings from Peru uwu
Believe it or not but I used to dislike Amy and watching sonic x for the first time recently made me love her. I totally disagree with the criticisms of her in that show and I honestly thought she was adorable. That seashell necklace episode was so wholesome!
Ok I'll admit here, I was one of these people who didn't like Amy and always thought of her just as "Sonic's annoying love interest", and I regret that. Your video really helped me remembering traits of her that I used to like but just ignored because of the prejudice I had with her character. To me it was always "oh no, Amy is here and she will get lovey-dovey with sonic and annoy the whole group", and I had this kind of thought with other characters as well, specially knuckles. Knuckles to me was just "another teammate to complete sonic team", and I never cared much about how he was introduced and developed throughout the series, I'm glad nowadays people are recognizing these characters and bringing their true potential to light. The recent sonic movie really made clear that sonic characters can still be fleshed out, unlike their game's flanderized incarnations that hasn't changed for a while. I was rooting for only Rouge to be introduced on the next movie but now I'm really hoping for Amy to appear too, and that they make her have a heavy relevance on the movie while using her character's personality before the flanderization. Great video btw, hope to see more of you here!
Very good video, Amy is my second favorite character, my pfp says whos is my firt lol. But anyways, i being a male also have growed a lot by having her even if she was from the oposite gender, i always find cool how she was a good hearted optimistic person who never gives up, her and Shadow where the only character in the franchise that made me cry, i grown a lot with those two tbh.
I'm honestly so happy that this video exists, Amy is a huge favorite character of mine and it sucks how much the fandom doesn't really recognize how much character potential and just how great a character she is overall. In general it's honestly really nice to see something like this and how much passion you have to make something like this, I'd really like to see more things from you in the future considering how well you're able to analyze characters :]
I agree Amy's not that bad of a character I never really got all the hate either she's one of many examples of strong female characters in the series like Blaze or Rouge
How did I not find this video sooner?!?! Ok, where do I even begin? Amy Rose is a character I loved during childhood and to this day she remains one of, if not, my ABSOLUTE favorite fictional character ever! Heck, Amy's the reason why I stuck with the sonic series this long. As much as I am a huge fan of the character, I do acknowledge the flaws and not-so-stellar portayls Amy has/had (I will never not be upset on how she was handled in the rider series). But personally, I think the good outweighs the bad. And believe it or not, Amy was sort of this good influence on me as a kid. Just her compassion in others, helping her friends and even seeing the good inside of characters like Gamma. I can't perfectly explain it, but it sort of inspired me and molded me to have that compassion for others. Plus her positive and optimistic nature is always something I admired (this coming from someone as moody as me). Also, I don't wanna sound like "that" fan, but watching your video and seeing the comparisons, differences in localizations, and writing, they did Amy so dirty. Amy is a good character, while yes with flaws, there's actually more to her than a obsessed fangirl everyone presents her as. She's a character with so much potential to grow and go even further and hope she gets her proper time to shine. But anyway, I loved your video and enjoyed it very much! ☺️
Thanks for watching! I feel the same and just hope Sonic Team will soon realize her potential as a character and also the positive impact she's had on fans.
As someone who only watched bits and pieces of the original series and was never really into the games at all and fell in love with her through fanart and comics. I loved her kind, strong, and topically feminine personality. Even as a younger girl with a very tomboy personality and style. Then as I grew older I saw the way she was viewed and felt ashamed for likening her. When I had been such a huge fan I filled multiple sketchbooks with fan art of her. This video made me feel so much better about my view of her and made me an even stronger supporter of hers.
I’ve grown from thinking she was annoying to absolutely adoring her. I just got an action figure of her to put by my tv lately. She is such an underrated character.
Amy has always been and will forever be my favorite character in the Sonicverse. Not only because of her feminine traits and design that I can relate to, but also because of what a wonderful character she is!
Honestly Amy is a very rounded and developed character, I think the main reason people find her "annoying" or "too stereotypically feminine" is because she's girly. Let strong female characters be girly and feminine!
As much as I love the whole entire strong and independent women trope I also enjoy a damsel in distress too. People seem too think that a female character has to be strong to be likable but people forget that women are weak too. And amy is strong in her own way. That's one thing Sonic likes about her.
i agree, soft characters, whatever gender they may be, can be just as likeable as strong characters. strength also doesn’t have to be physical, they can have a strong will but still be in distress, which can make a very interesting character!
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to watch this video and helped it reach 2K views! Your positive response has really encouraged me to make more videos for this channel, so stay tuned 🤗

@@dragondelsur5156 yeah i know lol, was being a bit hyperbolic
I don’t think boys would be obsessed with romance at that age like a girl, but that’s definitely old enough for them to like girls.
In riders and olympics I dress differently
Thanks for watching! Yes, I love that Amy looks so cute and girly, but is actually super tough and strong. Amy actually gets a few outfit changes in the mobile games and they're adorable
Yeah, and I always thought that part of her design change from her 8 year old style and her 12 year old one, was because she was growing up and trying to be more ladylike in an attempt to brush off her childish rascal personality and become more adult and well groomed to try to win Sonic over. So it would totally make sense for her to keep adapting her look.

Dude yess, 06 had one of the best Amy representations to date imo

I love character who are straightforward about their love, it’s so much more interesting and inspiring than typical “I’d rather die than let them know” or “love is weakness”
nah fr like woah... when did we start hating honesty??
Dont think the issue with Amy is how straightforward she is with her feelings, so much as her "romance" with Sonic is often portrayed as onesided with Amy being fairly forceful about it, despite Sonic clearly not having interest most of the time.
There might be more things about Amy besides her obsession with Sonic, much like this video addresses...But it is one of the most remebered traits about her because of how prominent it is.
Hope that whenever she appears in the movie verse, they tone down the obsession so her other character traits have more moments to shine.
Legit
If there's one thing that's always bugged me, it's that people who try to pitch or re-write Amy's character to be "better" always use the words "Now I made her head-strong and independent! She's better now!"
And it's like...
I agree with everything you said

True...neither word means anything..women can be strong emotionally and in their femininity which usually means they don't have to be alone because someone will fall for them..wanting to be independent sometimes means just space or wanting to prove something alone or liking freedom of sexuality to change your partner monthly or weekly or nightly...but sometimes it just means coding for i am difficult and bad at relations so I am kinds forced to claim to be empowered alone when I want someone to accept me desperately but don't want to be seen as a loser

Im so glad sega's slowly incorporating her as apart of team sonic, sonic hereos did her DIRTY.
Yeah, that would be an interesting twist to Amy's Sonic radar with how every hedgehog character in the franchise has some connection to chaos energy.
It's an interesting take.
Adding on to the fact she plays around with Tarot cards, fortune telling or anything that revolves around "Spirituality" or energies this would be an actual good twist to her seemingly "average girl" persona.
Actually, Super Sonic’s first appearance was in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, not Sonic CD.
Too many different personalities

I like knuckles hes so cool
Boom Series Knuckles is the best Knuckles.
And even the boom knuckles had smart moments. Knuckles is NOT an idiot
I'm simplifying. Wasn't Boom Knuckles some kind of Himbo?
I never really hated Amy when I was little. I was indifferent towards her, but I felt intrigued. I've started growing appreciative of her more and more after revisiting the old games. Amy's a nice character and I wish SEGA would do more with her. Also, when Amy gets introduced in one of the Sonic movies, I want her to be voiced by Anna Kendrick.
Yes, Anna Kendrick. 😆😂
I feel like her bad reception always boils down to just plain sexism. So many traits are bashed when she shows them but then are celebrated when they're shown on male characters. She's an awesome character with flaws and layers.

Sonic X is my favorite Amy because of that seashell necklace episode. That was so sweet.
IDW made Amy one of my favorite characters. The comic showed lot of different sides to all the characters really.

When SEGA let's them
I always felt that the IDW version is like a mix between the main game Amy and Sonic Boom Amy.
@@ghostspider2056 agree
Except Shadow... he's an edgelord in the IDW comics
I feel same, people really don't pay attention story that she in sonic games, they just easy jump conclusion to character quick.

I. LOVE.
@@miss_chelles1338 I mean in the IDW comic run, Sonic does value Amy as one of his closest friends and does take her along on missions.
He definitely liked her in sonic X for sure. That was my favorite portrayal of their dynamic.
Even when yes, most boys hated her 😢
I remember the first game I played was SA2, and thought Amy was a funny character.
Why didn’t they make Amy a playable character 😠 “
I want Amy treated better, I loved her storyline in SA1, finding value in herself. I really hope we get to see a future game where she is playable again, a game that reflects the greatest sides of the character while realizing they don’t have to change her too much, she’s always been great!
Great video, subscribed!!
She could easily be fixed by one change if not many you want:-"make sonamy canon"!
I adore Amy as much as a Sonic consumer would. Not saying Im a major fan of the Franchise, but I saw the point when you said, 'Who else in the cast makes Sonic act like this?"
Amy has an impact on others, she just wants a chance for them to notice how much she herself can do. -Even if she has a heart for Sonic
I love love love Amy! She stole my heart in SA2 when she said “have no fear, Amy Rose is here” and she’s been my favorite ever since.
why have i never even considered a sonic game where amy’s the second lead? that’s actually a really cool, innovative idea! i’d love to see that someday, they’d not only flesh out amy but her and sonics relationship to each other
I've always liked Amy, but this video helped me realize how much of a queen she truly is omg
@@fbichan9418 I don't think the comics are canon to the games dude
Still her relationship with him could exist and complete both of them.
(Depending on the game of course)
That seems to be a non issue now as it seems the west is now starting to embrace the fact that Sonic does indeed care for the girl and have romantic feelings for her. Even going as far as to hint at it and call him out for it during things like the Sonic twitter taker overs which Are canon.
Nah people who call her a stalker have no idea what they're talking about.
@@bakedbeans5494 I feel the same way.

Seeing this video made me feel like a big ole idiot. I feel sad that I started to hate her as time went on
I’ve heard so much negativity over the years that it made me forget the things I liked about her in the first place
I feel bummed out but also happy that I’ve re-found my love for her
So I wouldn’t say they were just preaching to the choir since I was an outsider who strolled up to the church to see what was being preached
Though I did come to this video with openness to having my mind/views be changed
I imagine there are plenty who will look at the title and roll their eyes or reinforce their own beliefs/views in their head without even giving the video a listen
There are some people who have made the decision in their mind to see her one way and aren’t interested in seeing her any other way unfortunately
I’ve joined the sonic amino recently and seeing posts with different takes and views on each character really has been kinda mind opening
I start off clicking on a post thinking “really?? They think THATS the best and most thought out character??” and by the end of it I’m like “omg they ARE the best! I think they just stole the spot as my new favorite character! I never thought about it that way before!”
It was crazy too because I’ve kinda been absent from the sonic fandom for years now(with exception to tuning into a few RUclips videos every blue moon from RUclips channels that talk about sonic games and stuff) and when I thought about how busy the sonic amino is and how UNDEAD it is(since many aminos are looking like they got tumbleweeds blowing through them these days) I wondered “what could have fans so passionate about sonic that they’re visiting and posting on this amino everyday?? Don’t most sonic fans hate the games and complain about everything??”
But seeing how everyone is still in love with all these different characters for so many different reasons or talking about cool obscure merchandise or facts that I never knew about... it’s kinda amazing and kinda touching actually
It’s really resparked my interest in all things sonic and it’s really interesting to see all the different perspectives people have to every character and game or mascot costumes and merchandise
Even the chat rooms are pretty fun. It’s nice to hear fans having casual conversations about the games or characters
People make fan comics and have people dub over them in the characters voices... it’s just really neat
As a kid,(back in the dreamcast days) I didn’t have any one around me that was into sonic. If I told them I was crazy about sonic(watching the shows, playing the games all the time) people were like “huh?? That pixel-y blue guy who goes in loops? Why would anyone be crazy about that??? He doesn’t even talk or have a story”
I’ve never really been around a community of people who also are crazy about sonic stuff so finally being able to be around people who enjoy sonic stuff as much as i do is nice. I sometimes feel like “man I’d love to be at a crush 40 concert with you guys” lol

one of my favorite amy moments you didnt mention was in sonic adventure 2, when she rescues sonic from jail on prison island. when tails first spotted her on the island, he was like "how did u get here?? its dangerous here!" clearly underestimating her. not only did she get to prison island, a fiercely defended remote military base BY HERSELF, but SHE found and collected the keycard to open sonic's cell. she plays the rescue moment up for laughs like "haha im gonna hold this card ransom to make u marry me" but when sonic says no to the bargain, she respects his lack of consent and frees him anyway, implying she was just joking around. that whole cut scene, i was like "damn this woman got some tricks up her sleeve"
If they ever remake S.A.2 they should make her a g.u.n. agent, that way two plot holes are fixed! And just maybe a small redesign.
Yeah, what I love about amy is she's girl Sonic
She's kinda a valley girl which is a distaff version of Sonic's radical dude and their dynamic seems to be the opposite of Super Mario & Princess Toadstool.
I guess she's technically playable in Silver's story, but that's not a whole game like in Heroes/SA
I really hoped she'd've been playable in Lost World since the myth was only Sonic/Blaze/Shadow/Metal can boost and here we finally don't have a "Hold X to win a hallway simulator" game but nope...
Thanks for watching!

“When Amy isn’t included in the club, she starts her own club”
YASS 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I love sonic heroes for this reason. In adventure she was relying on sonic to go on adventures and fight crime but in sonic heroes she does it herself and leads a team! It was great development but people downplay it for a stupid fight which all the characters had but only she gets punished for it.
Thanks for watching! Amy's initiative is one of my favorite things about her and its a quality they could really highlight more in the future
Me too
I have an Amy plush in my room
I got the GE Amy Plush. I always wanted one as a kid, and so last year I finally found one on Amazon. They should create more Amy plushies with different outfits like Amy with her swimsuit, her Olympics outfit, and Jingle Belle Amy.
My lil bro made her into the boom one so I got rid of it
I have a plushy of classic Amy and I got an action figure of modern Amy.
I love rouge! She’s a sassy awesome bat!
Ohh YEAHH!
Ya you can create a strong independent female character without her just kicking everyone's ass
Regarding the final part where you talk about Amy not being the second lead in any game, it'd be amazing if we got a game similar to Super Princess Peach but with Amy, where we get to see her as the protagonist and also see her go through a character development arc while showing all of her abilities and strengths
That aside I love this video SO much, you've made every argument about why Amy Rose is an amazing character (even some I hadn't think about before), and I'm super glad to have found this video, so thank you for making it 💞❤💞
I wish the same here.
That was a cute video, I agree with your stance, especially since Amy’s always been a fine character. Heck, could you do a Shadow the Hedgehog character analysis vid where you cover Shadow’s history and condemn Sonic Team for the fan-hated direction they took Shadow in the games and IDW?
Thanks for watching and for the suggestion! There certainly is a lot to talk about in regards to Shadow.
I really like this perspective. Definitely agree. There was part of her character that really annoyed me but I always thought she was very fiery and I always liked that she said how she felt. I love that she’s happily feminine too. Awesome review
Most of her problems could be solved if sonamy was canon!
Agreed!
Love this video!
Amy is such an underappreciated character within the franchise, and I'm glad you've provided all of us with another perspective!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
Yeah, I really hope things change in this next era. Thanks for watching!
You should check out Sonic underground, sonia is extremely simular to her. That show helped me get through some hard times!
@@erikbihari3625 Not gonna lie that show got me though 3rd grade

That seashell necklace episode was so wholesome!
honestly i think amy was my first comfort character. i'll always have an affection for that adorable badass pink hedgehog.
I just hope they don't make Amy a generic tomboy in the movies.
Amy is cute and pretty .

Another male who likes amy? Thats rare
Also shadow is my second favorite character he is on my profile pic too lol
@@loser4368 the same, he also my second favorite.
This is my fave video on my fave female character in general! thank you for the work it took to make this!
It was a lot of work, I'm thinking of sticking to shorter videos from now on 😅 Thanks for watching!
I never took the time to actually learn about Amy at all, but hey she's actually a good character! I like Amy
Good for you. Also if they made sonamy canon, it'd give layers to both of them!
I love that you have time to talk about how Amy isn’t useless and is her own person it is amazing
Honestly Amy is a very rounded and developed character, I think the main reason people find her "annoying" or "too stereotypically feminine" is because she's girly. Let strong female characters be girly and feminine!
Thank you so much for this video! Amy's one of my favourite characters in the series and I'm glad to know there are other people who love her.
As much as I love the whole entire strong and independent women trope I also enjoy a damsel in distress too. People seem too think that a female character has to be strong to be likable but people forget that women are weak too. And amy is strong in her own way. That's one thing Sonic likes about her.
I have to agree. Not every female has to be in the action all the time just like being kidnap bait.
i agree, soft characters, whatever gender they may be, can be just as likeable as strong characters. strength also doesn’t have to be physical, they can have a strong will but still be in distress, which can make a very interesting character!
