I like how if you look at her in Sonic Adventure 1, then through the Advance games, there's a progression in her skills and abilities. She gets better in each game. And it's not just her somehow gaining more power or anything. In Sonic Battle, which is set between Advance 2 and 3, explained that she does train. She's not just sitting around waiting for Eggman, or whoever, to start causing trouble. She's getting ready and preparing so she can do her best to help those in need.
Sort of. She legit gets stronger than her DID sonic CD role in Adventure 1, but after that she regresses into getting relentlessly kidnapped, treated like a burden by everyone else and her only action was begging a useful character to do something, not doing something herself like at the end of SA1. She does improve in advance and having Cream to take over the damsel in distress role and give her a relationship that doesn’t revolve around sonic was a good step
Joke comment aside: Just give her more interactions with characters that could use it, like Shadow and Silver. Similarly to Shadow she’s a character that thrives off of interaction with others, at least Imo. Also have her do things instead of just standing on the sidelines.
For real, silver and shadow wouldn’t have turned into heroes if it wasn’t for the interactions they had with Amy. And that’s just what I like about her, she’s just a girl so she tries her best and works hard, does risky things to help everyone.
the humanity part is my favorite, the idea of Amy being show as a normal person without any power or responsibilities, yet she's willing to help with a big hammer just to help her friends is, really interesting.
@@lasercraft32 I personally like them, because to be fair, she is in a cyberspace form, which they took advantage of a potential moveset based on her personality and likes (like her bubbly trait and the fact she's a fortune teller)
@@lasercraft32They just mentioned the connections to magic she _always had._ Sure, the Piko-Piko Hammer is her more iconic skill, but that debuted in Sonic the Fighters, whereas Tarot was part of her lore since when she was a mere damsel in distress.
I think the foresight theory is interesting and would make more sense for Amy to show up in convenient times. I also think that Amy should still have feelings for Sonic but just more in a casual sense then a obsessive sense. Like she can still talk to Sonic like a normal person but sometimes shows affection like a kiss on the cheek for some occasions. She’s ok with not having the feelings returned so long as he can still like her as a friend. But she should also have a bit of a tomboy streak with a taste for adventure and action. And have the confidence to fend for herself if needed.
Amy has always had passion for action and adventure, yet she cant still be femenine, I mean its canon she has learn bowxing and the girl carries a hammer, she can be femenine and still be a good character who loves action, adventure and doesnt mind getting dirty, which she is how she is
I've always found it notable that no description of her "destined encounter" mentions romance. None at all. She was an eight-year-old girl who heard "destiny," looked at her hero, and understandably assumed it was romance, but it was so much more than that. Meeting Sonic and learning from him *was* the most important moment of her life, but it wasn't about him. It was about her. And yeah, I also subscribe to the foresight headcanon. It makes too much sense.
@@ALtheBoi Your points in this video are really interesting, but I wanted to say that Amy is not Powerless anymore. I love the fact that you mentioned that she was a normal civillian, because its true, but ever since she discover the magical Piko Piko Hammer she has achieved so many abilities. Since Sonic Heroes, she can spindash, she is faster than Blaze and Blaze is literally a Sonic from another dimension. Amy is a speed type character, plus in Sonic Generations she can fly by spinning and making a pink tornado. In all the Olympic Games is shown that she can use heart punches and explosive hearts. In Sonic battle she could pull out unlimited explosive presents. In Sonic and the Black Knight, Amy can use Pink Typhoon which is like an explosive wave of Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z. So yeah, in Sonic Idw it was proven that she finds sonic by putting her head in the ground and listening were he was, so she has big audition and magical intuition of where people where. Plus, Amy is stronger than Tails, Cream, Charmy, etc. In Sonic Lost World she sent knuckles flying to a tree with just a slap, and in every fighting gane statistics is shown that Amy has more physical strength than Sonic, Silver and Shadow. Amy is faster than silver but not as fast as shadow or sonic. She can turn invisible, and she can make electric tornados or typhoons with her hammer. Also, Amy was knock out by Rouge 20 times in Sonic Battle, yet she still got up and fought her. Amy is the onmy sonic character, who has achieved everything by trainning and experiences. In conclusion, Amy is not powerless and in Sonic Frontiers she is going to play a bigger role so maybe new things will come to her as a character.
@@unknown-ke2be You got some good feats there but I’m gonna have to debunk some stuff. Firstly, Amy is nowhere near as strong as the hedgehog trio as she has shown zero feats matching them. The best Amy has for strength is the runaway train from Sonic Shuffle, I calculated Amy to be pushing about 4,500 tons. (the same as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles because all 4 of them were stopping the train with their arms) Amy pushing Knuckles away is more of a funny gag, because Amy stands no chance against Knuckles (only being able to survive his attacks not beat him). Also Amy never got her powers from her hammer, she actually has a genetic trait in her hedgehog dna that allows her to move faster than normal, this is present for all hedgehogs (which explains Silver’s super speed in generations 3ds, rivals 1 and 2 and more. And Sonic himself). Also I need evidence where Amy is faster than Blaze.
@@undeadbatman9762 Ok, first, I didnt meant to say she obtained her powers from.her hammer, but that was her first ability, second Amy has never thought Knuckles for you to say thay she has survied his attacks, archie comics arent canon, Im assuming amy is faster than blaze because in Sonic Runners she was speed type and blaze was her teamate as power type, also Amy can keep up with sonic speed. In Sonic Boom, Amy could keep more time with shadow than Knuckles could, I know that isnt canon, but it still shows how Sega thinks of the characters powers. In Sonic X which is nased on the videogames, Knuckles got scared whn Amy said he had to defeat her in order to gain the chaos emerald. Amy is faster than knuckles, but again they have never thought in games, so yeah since Amy is the only voice heard in the Sonic Rangers trailer is Amy, so maybe her involvement will show more of her powerful traits. Amy can turn invisible and knuckles is kinda dum, so that is a big point against him. But yeah, no hate against anyone I love Knuckles and all Sonic Characters
@@unknown-ke2be yea I thought they got Blaze really wrong in Runners for she’s more of a Speed character. And Amy was very flanderized in Sonic X, making her an angry Miss Piggy…erm, actually just Miss Piggy from Muppets. And it doesn’t prove that she’s stronger than Knuckles for he was jus scared of her sheer aggressiveness. And though she can keep up with Sonic, he’s usually not at his best for some reason (wither he actually likes her romantically or not is up to interpretation.). I mean we don’t know if she can use Boost like Sonic and Blaze.
Sonic and Amy honestly make a pretty good team. Amy uplifts and has compassion for everyone she meets, and Sonic inspires everyone and always fights for what's right.
Absolutely, this is why Amy’s story is my favorite one in sonic adventure which I think is the best portrayal of her: She loves Sonic (she shows it, she talks to him and even monologues on her enthusiasm towards him) but that’s not all. Her entire story is getting kidnapped and chased because she has to face the difficulties of not having powers, all of that because she is so into helping a little bird she met in less than a minute. That speaks a lot about her courage and kindness. And finally she DOES manage to finish the villain in the end, closing her arc and character development.
Opposite hypothesis: After the "date" Amy really gets solidified into Sonic's close friend circle. The transformation may be that she realized that she is actually getting most of what she wants out of her relationship with Sonic and doesn't need to place labels on it or demand constant physical affection from him. What we are actually seeing is Amy's other aspects become more prominent because her desire for affection from Sonic is already being fulfilled.
See that’s actually the idea! The date would be the moment where Amy and Sonic are closest they’ve ever been, after that you can interpret it however you want, it should all lead to the same conclusion!
@@ALtheBoi Apparently they actually did write a side story of them going on that to accompany the Sonic Channel calendar art for March of last year. It’s actually really well written, and someone even recorded an audio drama from it.
This is the best take on Amy ive ever seen. That ending had me just sitting in silence. Thank you for bringing to the surface what makes Amy great. You said it all. Also, so so interesting that Amy likes tarot and possibly has strong intuitive capabilities. Thats honestly freakin' awesome and I never knew that.
(also also the idea of amy wanting to be courageous to help others after sonic inspiring her by saving her just...thats so good. we need more stories that focus on this than just "he saved me and im in love now")
I feel that Amy having some sort of unknown sensory ability would make a good amount of sense. Perhaps why she has the ability to find Sonic, and has confused Shadow and Silver for him, is because she is sensing the chaos energy about, then using that as a directive.
As always this is an amazing analysis of Amy’s character and the ideas you bring to “fix” her are pretty great. As I’m sure you know, I find myself in the camp of people who think Amy is too different now (more specifically in Boom) compared to how she used to be, and I think your idea for fixing that problem is pretty in character and would be satisfying to see happen. The best of humanity thing is also a pretty perfect description of her, alluding to her speech about humanity to Shadow.
@@DaGhostToastRoast she does now for she quit being leader. That zombie arc was originally for Archie, but there was a large Sally hole there that Amy had to fill.
@@antyep To be fair, there's kind of no room for her to "act normal" in the context of that arc. And she leads the resistence in her style, not Sally's.
I’m sorry but I never liked the idea of Shadow a Hedgehog being a slave to humanity and what about their civilization and what about them should they find happiness too. That’s why I like with the comics deal where there’s no humans at all and they protect their own the way it should be
I remember that back when we talked in the Studio a year or so ago that we disagreed on some points of Amy’s character, but throughout this entire (beautifully-edited and incredibly compelling video), there wasn’t a single point I found myself disagreeing on. Some points were opinions I already held, some helped me make new connections. Absolutely beautiful. Fantastic work, AL!
I freaking love Amy in the IDW comics. She's cheerful, kind and cute, but she's also this anxiety and stress filled workaholic and that was something I didn't know would work so well with her character. She feels a lot more relatable in the comics because they changed her annoying obsession with Sonic into a simple crush she can let go off or just a normal friendly relationship to just live a normal life or be helpful to their other friends. I really like this shift in her character and I hope they stick with it. I never liked how annoyingly clingy she was and that made me dislike her up until the Boom cartoon, Unleashed and the IDW comics. Also, the idea that she might have some special ability related to foresight or Tarot reading sounds cool. Like, she doesn't know that she can see or sense stuff ahead and that kind of makes her the lucky wild card character without the annoyance. That's awesome.
The tarot cards for Amy are unique as they're both a hobbyist thing as well as have an actual technical power to them. Besides clairvoyance (and her own supernatural sensory thing going on), they're a utility/attack in the one BioWare game, and she outright mentions using them to guide her in one of the Sonic Battle games. Her sense of humanity is like you said a wonderful thing too. I mean, go back to Sonic Adventure 2 (especially the JP script). She pleas to Shadow to help the world and save humans; even if they're all not that good, everyone deserved a chance to try and lead SOME kind of life. It was enough to get Shadow close into remembering his promise to help humans, and that's what got him to start sliding into the more anti-hero protag instead of just being a loyal lackey. If she wasn't there to do that, Shadow would have just watched the world burn~
Well, in idw, they tackled the whole "letting sonic go" when amy was the leader of the restorarion, she wanted sonic to join, but she knew he would refuse because he is a free spirit, so she tried her luck, but after the no, she just went back to work as the leader, yeah she still likes him, but she decided herself that she should focus on whats more important. We just have to see what will happen to her character now that she stepped down from the leader position and gave it to jewel, last issue she helped a lot in stopping the fire that surge and kit started, though it was mostly jewels plan, but if she hadnt "calmed" the desperate campers and encouraged jewel, things would have ended really bad.
Honestly so far I think Evan Stanley’s run of IDW understands Amy’s character very well. The chao race, the virtual trap world, and the recent camping story arc has Amy in my opinion the closest sonic adventure in years. She still likes to hug sonic and flirt with him a bit but she’s focused on the mission and shes presented in a way that’s normal and not obsessive. I think the best route for Amy let’s say in the new sonic prime show they could acknowledge her past maybe with sonic teasing her and flashbacks about how she used to chase him and then show a flashback of lets say as an example that would make sense, Amy annoys sonic too far one day and he snaps at her and hurts her feelings. This leads Amy to go through a redemption arc in which she matures and learns how to behave around sonic without changing how she feels about him. I don’t want Amys love for sonic to go away personally. I always found it cute. That’s just one idea. Really just giving us that transition would redeem Amy for her flanderized era. Also I’ll admit I actually have a big soft spot for sonic x Amy. She was better in the Japanese version and really I found her more cute and funny than annoying but that’s just me.
@@DaGhostToastRoast Don't you think it's uncharacteristic for Sonic to snap at Amy? He doesn't hate her and maturing for the sake of it doesn't make Amy's change more justified, it feels just as a way to shut up 40 years olds on their mom's basement that still don't understand what a women is. The only way for that to happen (logistically) is if time passes, she is still 12, though the only other way would be for her to search better means of aproaching Sonic, not as friends because they already are since the Adventure days (or better yet, since after her introduction), but as lovers, and even if Sonic wants nothing to do with romance, he is still willing to date her from time to time. But in my honest opinion, Amy doesn't need to mature, the fanbase needs to.
@@dragondelsur5156 Yeah I mean really I agree with you. The only reason I feel Amy needs a redemption arc is because I feel sega severely butchered her character in games like sonic rush and free riders making her mean and borderline crazy (she even attacked Cream in rush which is totally out of character). But I suppose we could just ignore those games if they return Amy to being sweet and innocent like in the adventure games. I’m actually a fan of her in the IDW comics especially the more recent ones.
Amy has to be in one of the oddest positions as a Sonic character. Throughout the Dreamcast/Dark age, she was criticized for being an “annoying control freak” towards Sonic, then she underwent a maturity arc in Forces (which we don’t see) and now she is often compared to Sally Acorn in a negative light from Archie fans. Unlike most characters where fans have a good idea of how these characters should be, Amy is often to be recommended as one of two things: 1. An ever growing fan girl of Sonic from SA1. 2. A fitting leader of the Resistance from IDW. I personally predict that Amy will go the Leader route in the future since Ian is taking the pen on the games. P.S. It’s glad to have you back Al
Given how Ian ever since the epilogue of the Metal Virus arc backpedaled on Amy (going from Knuckles saying Amy did all the important stuff to Amy saying she was little more than a secretary under Knuckles) I'm pretty sure Leader Amy isn't going to stick around. I actually thing Amy was only put into this role because the bases of the Metal Virus arc go back to 2012 when the than Archie Sonic editor pitched the idea of a Sonic Zombie story to cash in on "The Walking Dead"s success. This than meat that when Ian now finally wanted to tell this story did he run into the problem that he now had a pretty big Sally sized hole in his story so he used Forces as an excuse to have Amy fill this hole (and not Knuckles because he wanted Knuckles back guardian the Master Emerald as fast as possible).
@@rynobehnke8289 You’re not wrong with Amy quitting, she gave the job to Jewel the Beetle (an original IDW character) due to how stressful her position as leader was.
Wait... Ian is going to write for the games? Fk yeah hopefully Roger can do better with a better script Though part of me still wants movie sonic to take up the games but whatever I'll take the win
@@rynobehnke8289 The backpedal was in response to people saying they wanted her back to status quo and part of the group. It was going to last longer but he decided to can it before Evan took over as head writer.
Though I was getting a bit annoyed the fact that everyone calls her obsessed even though she wants the best for sonic and the fact that people think she "doesn't deserve sonic," this still made me cry. Amy is a big influence, she represents the best, she puts herself in danger for the sake of others. I still can't believe how people hate Amy.
While I would say Amy was at her best between her original debut to 2009 (much like everyone else), in the Japanese dub they still at least get her right (much like everyone else) when you compare to how Pontaff write her. Take this scene from Team Sonic Racing as she interacts with her friend Big, not that you'd believe they were friends when you see the English one. ENG Big: I don't know why everybody's mad at Dodon Pa. This race is fun and my car is cool. Chao: Chao! Chao! Amy: Big, just because somebody gives you something nice doesn't mean that they're nice. If Eggman offered me a cookie I wouldn't eat it, because I'd be pretty sure that there was something wrong with the cookie. Big: Eggman has cookies? Mm, I want one. Amy: No, Big. Eggman doesn't have cookies. It was a metaphor. Big: Is a metaphor a kind of cookie? I'm confused. Amy: We know, Big. We know. JPN Big: Why is everyone speaking ill of Mr. Dodonpa? He prepared us such cool cars and all... Chao: Chao! Chao! Amy: I understand how you feel, Big... But giving out nice things doesn't make you a nice person. For example, if Eggman gave you a cookie, you wouldn't eat it, right? Since it's obvious something would be off about it. Big: Eggman will give me a cookie? Yaaay. ♪ Amy: That's not what I mean! He's not actually gonna give it! The cookie is only meant to be an example! Big: "Example" is the name of a cookie? I'm not sure I get it... Amy: Sigh... alright, Big... I'll buy you a cookie later. In the English dub, Amy treats Big contempt, talking down to with a condescending tone. In the Japanese dub however, she still looks to to explain to Big about cookies and metaphors/examples but rather than making a snide remark which suggests Big is just a big dofus who she puts up with, she promises to buy her friend when this adventure is over. Not sure how people can say Amy suddenly got better post Lost World with her acting so out of character.
@@ALtheBoi I'll be sure to check it out when it goes live. Also hopefully she, along with the other characters will be playable again in Frontiers, especially when you consider that it's been 15 years since the last time we could play as them. A friend of mine likened the past 15 of Sonic or bust in the mainline games to going to a friend's house and only being allowed to play with one of his action figures. Or they show us a huge plate with many varieties of cookies, then tell us we're only allowed to eat the plain sugar cookies. Occasionally, we can add sprinkles.
I don’t understand why everyone forgets she’s 12 years old, I don’t care what anyone says but sometimes it’s ok for her to act like this, maybe if Sonic characters were still aging then I would agree that all of them have to grow up because their constantly put in danger so it’s ridiculous for them to act the way they do but everyone’s lives and maturity levels are different, sometimes it’s fine to act a certain way
@@Swiftlift936 Amy is most definitely not just a 12 year old anymore. Whatever ages they had in the past, there's been way to much time going past for them to still be accurate lol
Amy's ability to summon her Piko Hammer from Hammerspace is itself a power, since she has the ability to do so at will and can always just summon another if she happens to lose it. Amy also has the same abilities other Sonic characters are blessed with like Super Speed, High Physical Strength/Stamina etc. While she's primarily defined as a melee fighter with formidable acrobatic skills (Akin to non powered Superheroes) Amy can use abilities projected from the hammer. The main issue is that the game's give how poorly or inconsistent they do power levels Amy never had a lot of them consistent. Like yeah she's the slowest of the speed characters, but the Advance trilogy and Heroes show she can move fast. I consider games like Adventure her reason for moving slow was that she had yet to develop the ability to run fast on her own, this continues in Advance 1, only she's more speedier than in SA1. Come Heroes/Advance 2 and she can run like the rest of the cast, I always saw Amy's lack of "special" attributes and slow movement as a way of telling us that she was inexperienced and was developing on her own, discounting Sonic 06 because the characters simply weren't finish and everyone is slower on average in that game. Some of Amy's abilities that did appear more than once was her ability to hover (which later turned into flight) in Sonic Heroes she has a hover ability she can use which allows her to stay in the air for a brief second, this same move was seen again in Sonic Generations during one of the missions, specifically the one where you race her in Sky Sanctuary. She can homing attack (SA2 and Heroes) This would make Sonic the ONLY one of his main four friends to not have some ability to achieve flight or glide in some way without the use of a super form. The games just never gave more due to their poor lack of utility of the cast, and lack of use since 2006. Amy can even summon a tornado from her hammer, seen in Heroes, then again in Sonic Battle.
I agree with everything you said in this video. I like how the ship took a backseat in this video. Whether you love or hate SonAmy, that shouldn’t be her defining trait. Amy isn’t just Sonic’s girlfriend/wanna-be girlfriend, she’s her own flushed out three dimensional character who is interesting even on her own.
I don't know how to explain it, but to me Amy was at her best as a narrative character and as a playable character in the advance series She doesn't have a lot of dialogue but all of her animations, her playable abilities and the scenery she goes about just feels right Like she's a passionate version of sonic where as sonic has his "cool" motif, amy has a caring motif while playing identical for being the speed character (and yes maybe it's nostalgia and the music throughout advance has this magic and wonder feeling, I still think they're some merit there)
Anyone else feel like whenever this guy speaks, he breaks reality? I think that's sick! You are making me feel better and better about liking these characters man! Even if some wish they were different or, you know, NONE EXISTENT. At least until you tell a joke and then I laugh it off
The IDW comics really handle Amy great by brining up her crush on Sonic, but putting it on the back burner. The comics really show off her leadership, drive, and yes, compassion. I really like how Amy is quickly shifted into the leader role instead of Knuckles, and I think it should’ve been like that in Forces.
This isn't just a video about fixing a character, it's understanding and analyzing exactly what makes her so unique in a cast of detectives, kinetics, gods, and superheroes. Amy's not special, or at the very least she's not anywhere near as strong as her friends and idols, but she's _always_ willing to step in to help regardless. That's what makes her feel so different from the rest of the cast. Even in Sonic Heroes, where she ends up just wanting to find Sonic and her friends' missing pals. She, a pretty average girl, along with a 6 year old and her superpowered pet, and a big, shockingly strong cat, ended up leading the charge against a foe who was so dangerous, even _Eggman_ recognized that Super Sonic was not only their best chance, but their ONLY chance to topple Metal Sonic. But she's the one who rushes in first and foremost into this battle, allowing the others to assess their opponent, and Sonic and his team to prepare themselves. For over 10 years, these characters have hardly, if ever, been allowed to grow. But now that there's a familiar, but powerful new writer that we KNOW is at the very least competent, we may be able to see some more strength of character given to our favorite fuzzy friends.
YES, finally someone who thinks Amy has psychic powers ! It just makes sense ! The tarot cards don't predict fate for her, no, SHE does. I was probably the only one who thought that her talking to Sonic telepathically in the Frontiers trailer wasn't out of place. ( Whether or not it's actually her, I dunno, I don't look at leaks or info. ) If anyone would have the ability to tune into people's energies and mind and broadcast her voice there, it'd be her ( if not Shadow, maybe ).
@@dragondelsur5156 Considering that tarot cards have been part of her character since literally her inception, they really should. It's a very well known fact.
I always felt that it's kinda weird that every other hedgehog in the main franchise besides Amy has been so powerful and cool. I think Amy deserves a super transformation. Edit one year later: Heck yeah my girl got her super form!!
No, she doesn't, her just having the ability to spin a ball and hammer is enough. To me, I just don’t like the idea that she had been handed a silver platter, it’s already there.
@@mazkeraid4039 Bruh, to you the very notion of Amy appearing and doing more than being a pasive presence, you see it as giving her special treatment.
Holy the editing is even more impressive in this one. You wrote the whole script and managed to make it work with some subtle visual comedy. Keep it up man. So many masks that weren't needed. It's the little details that make videos special. Props to u
This video took me from mourning what amy COULD be as a character, knowing she was mishandled, to unironically loving her, flaws and all. and it got me emotional while it did??? this was fantastic, thank you
Looking at her essay, Amy is basically Ussop from One Piece when it comes to her role in the story. In the sense that she started off as the weak liability in the group and slowly became an irreplaceable asset with her friends.
While she definitely had some rough characterisation during a good part of the 2000s, I think Amy has made a great comeback in the current era with how more focus has been put on her compassionate side. She's definitely done better lately than Knuckles or Shadow, that's for sure.
Yeah I disagree with him about IDW Amy. I think the it’s a great direction they’ve taken her character. Imo she still portrays her caring side and optimism. She was really great in the recent comics where her, tangle, Belle, and jewel. She had a really wholesome scene with jewel encouraging her and I love that they brought back Amy’s tarot cards.
@@DaGhostToastRoast I think it was because of her time as a leader. It doesn’t feel earned. It’s only after she quit that she kinda went back to basics.
@@antyep No I don’t really agree but I understand where your coming from. This is how I see it. Sonic was gone for a long time and eggman took over the world. I could see that being a brutal reality check for her and it essentially forced her to refocus her priorities. Plus I can see Amy having leader skills and potential as she always has had a take charge personality and has always been the one to lead her own groups. Perhaps the tactical and strategic part felt out of place but I don’t think it’s a stretch for her to have learned a lot while sonic was gone. All she knew to do was to help her friends (which is what she does. Amy helps others) and plus she didn’t just start off as a leader either. She was assisting knuckles and really when she did take over the restoration I don’t think she went into it knowing really what was going to happen next. She managed to do a decent job during the metal virus but a lot of things went wrong and you could see it took a tole on her by the end. Amy explains in a scene that she did it because she felt she had to do it. She felt an obligation to her friends and they trusted her as a leader after having worked along side knuckles but really she is an adventurous type and missed the freedom and the first opportunity she got she stepped down after the metal virus arc and went back to going on adventures with her friends. This is one major reason I disagree with people calling IDW Amy Sally. She clearly is still Amy but written around forces and written to have matured. I argue Amy has the potential to rise to bigger roles. Another thing is she did rely on her friends a lot to make it and is why I also strongly disagree with everyone calling her a Mary Sue. Their victories really were a group effort. I will say I currently like the way Evan Stanley is writing her kind of returning her closer to how she was and she does still have moments of being flirty and excited around sonic. Her and sonic just have a better relationship now and she respects his freedom. Also IDW brought back her tarot cards which is very interesting side of Amy’s character and her belief in fate.
@@antyep I guess I can agree perhaps this should be a one off thing and keep Amy mainly just a part of smaller groups helping her friends and kind of doing her own thing like she always has. Also I hope they have her flirt with sonic some. I don’t want their dynamic to change entirely. Just don’t overdo it like in the past.
"She'll always go out of her way to help others in need, and that makes her a real hero." - Sonic when talking about Amy in today's TailsTube. It made me think of this video. Glad that it seems like this is the direction they'll take with Amy from now onward in the games.
As for the date that you suggested take place between Unleashed and LW, I think a perfect time for that would be at the very end of Black Knight. In the ending scene Amy confirmed that Sonic did actually agree to take her out so I imagine that the event you described happened there. I would love a flashback scene to this at some point (whether it be in IDW or the mainline games).
Yeah it would be really interesting to see how the date turned out and how Amy grew from it and mellowed down to a girl who still loves Sonic to bits but can have a conversation with him without it needing to center around getting a date with Sonic.
The Humanity part really opened my eyes as to why she was one of my favorite characters growing up. I really saw that in her, and wanted to be that for others as well. Yeah she was cute and pink and such, but the way she would help her friends even strangers, being there for them, and seeing the good in everyone, I found myself wanting to be like that as well. Not saying she’s the only character that portrays those traits and inspired me when i was younger BUT it did make me like her a lot growing up :)
Adventure 1-2's Amy is perfect to me. Her love and value of the lives of others, and her insight, even towards people she'd call her enemies, is something that informs all of her actions. She still had a massive crush on Sonic, sure, but the way she treated her birdie, Gamma, and Shadow, and her argument that all life is sacred and deserves the chance to prove that they good, that they deserve to be happy, is something that I cannot overstate the importance of. Her heart fills a niche that not even Sonic or Tails' caring heart could reach. Also yeah, Amy is totally magic
It is occasionally shown that Amy does have some sort of magical/psychic potential. If unrefined since she has had no one to train her and is just going by off of instincts and will power.
Amy actually does have powers, she can turn invisible in Sonic 06, and pretty much has all of Sonic's abilities in Heroes, Advance 2, and the multiplayer of SA2B. There's probably some other examples I'm not thinking of, but regardless it kinda kills the "great power great responsibility" point when she has been shown to be incredibly powerful and skillful multiple times.
What a freaking fantastic video! I've always loved Amy, even when her obession over Sonic sometimes annoyed me. Thanks for reminding me why i love her character so much!💕
I think it'd be interesting if they could balance Amy's hotheadedness with her compassion. It never feels like she has those two sides in the same space, which results in her coming off as very inconsistent. This is the girl who'll talk down a suicidal hedgehog bent on destroying the world for revenge who on another occasion was completely willing to beat Eggman with a hammer black and blue in a fit of anger. I feel like these two sides could be a fun take but I never see it
This is incredible. In more recent years I had already come to enjoy Amy as her own character and I also held onto some of these beliefs about her, but this video just blew me away with not only the editing (fantastic work there seriously) but every point made and every example of her character standing in her unique brightness…you just made me love her character even more. Incredible video.
You know, I kept skipping this one. Because, I assumed it would just be “Amy needs to stop lusting after Sonic and be the ‘strong female protagonist’ that I want her to be” but never in a million years did I believe you could open my eyes to Amy not being gifted, not necessarily because the writers didn’t know what they were doing, but because of how it portrayed her as infinitely compassionate and strong she is in her OWN way. People believe she stole Sally’s character because Sally is what Amy was really always meant to be. The freedom fighter with the least, but cares the most. This video was unexpectedly phenomenal
I like the idea of Amy being the "kirby" of the Sonic universe: if you just look at her she's the one girl to clown on all the time, but gets deep when you look into it
Jesus dude. I couldn’t really focus on the topic of the video cause I was so freaking impressed with your editing skills. It looks so professional and so visually interesting and cool. God DAMN
I feel that you and the comment section are gravely underestimating Amy's power level. The times where she's playable, she's just as capable as steamrolling entire bot armies as everyone else, like she can she can summon tornados from her Piko for crying out loud.
Kinda fair, but Not only it's relative, given the people she surrounds herself with are typically not "normal" powered individuals, but it's also speaking from a character writing pov Lore, random gameplay feats or obscure trivia shouldn't limit your creativity, as long as you're not breaking any rules or displaying someone as completely out of character, I'd say go for it!
@@ALtheBoi If we take a look at ALL of Amy’s abilities in ALL of the Sonic games. Amy herself isn’t as normal as you portray her to be. I mean she can curse people, turn invisible, she’s stronger and faster than the average citizen and (if we gonna include other media besides games) she’s able to summon weapons from thin air at will and keep doing that for an infinite amount of times. (This is excluding her potential psychic powers.)
Oh man, what a video. I just love how Amy is just some girl in the right place in the right in the games and comics, and with Sonic Frontiers coming next year, perhaps we could see an Amy that has matured and trying to guide Sonic through his Amnesia and save not only her, but also his friends as well
I love this! Amys always been one of my favorite characters since I was in like middle school and got into sonic (coming up on 10 years now), and you've explained her so well! I've always loved her since she's so kind to people, and feels the most relatable and human to me
Everyone jokes about how useless Amy is in SA2 but I honestly feel very bad for her in it. Lets look at where she's at in SA1. She is able to save the Flicky, inspires Gamma to fight for good just like she would eventually do again with Shadow later on, she stood up to the guy that she loved to protect Gamma, which actually worked, and fought Zero all by herself. Needless to say, her confidence is through the roof after SA1. Perhaps her confidence is so high that she, for instance, finds herself more willing to actively tag along with Sonic and the gang like she is in SA2 instead of passively longing for the days when she and Sonic were together more often like she was at the beginning of SA1. And what happens in SA2? They leave her behind again and again until they reach the ARK and when they once again ditch her, this time onboard an enemy space station she has no easy way of getting out of, and she predictably gets captured since they, y'know, left her alone in enemy territory, she's used as bait to lure the guy she loves into a trap that nearly kills him, and that Amy for a while thinks actually did kill him. It's like SA2 is constantly punishing her for the confidence that SA1 inspired in her and it makes me really sad for her. Sooooo Justice for Amy.
Beautifully edited video! The transitions are smooths and it’s engaging overall. Amy has always been one of my favorite characters so I love all the points you made. She really is the heart of the team
i never actually thought about how amy doesnt have any powers or special responsibility or something until this video, i like that you pointed that out. sounds silly but i quite like characters that are like that, where they dont have any powers or big responsibilities.
Nah bro Amy DEFINITELY has powers. She can steamroll bot armies with ease like everyone else. She shoots tornados out of her hammer for crying out loud.
I love your idea that Amy has some magic of her own in an intuition nudging her to the right place at the right time, so she always seems lucky or inexplicably caught up in something big. And growing beyond a head over heels crush for Sonic to a genuine love where she wants what's best for him is fitting for her growing up. So far as character traits go, going off Adventure, she's got a lot in common with Sonic: she has a good heart, she's impulsive and energetic , she'll get in over her head to help a stranger in need, and she can be brash. Also brave, maybe more than some of the cast since she has less to fall back on when she gets in trouble, but she runs into trouble anyway. Maybe add shortsighted to the list of commonalities. Love the editing, it's well done and it helps the flow of the video.
this still might be my favorite video essay on the character ever, saying this as someone who's gotten themselves back into sonamy after years of distancing myself from it.
My favorite part is the Humanity Section. Cause yea Amy shouldn't have been anywhere near those places yet she chose to, just to help others(from friends to strangers). And she showed a lot of younger girls that it's ok to like girly things and be strong. You dont have to be a tomboy(then there's some Amy versions...) to be amazing and a hero. Being a normal girl is not always a bad thing. I personally loved Amy ever since I first saw her since she always kept her elegance while still making a statement (and fights) and no one should ever step on her. Amy does the stepping. With golden bands and Gucci boots and hammer.
As someone who has gotten fond of Amy greatly in relatively recent times, I do love your video and all, but I do have a few fundamental gripes with it that I believe run current to a great deal of the discourse around the character, and that's the topic of LOVE in general. Because if I had to boil Amy down to a single narrative concept, it would be that she is the LOVE character. But that love isn't just in romance but LOVE in general holistically. Amy is a very loving character, whether that be for people she just met, those she considers her friends, and yes, Sonic the love of her life. I often see it claimed or treated that Amy's love is a flaw that gets in the way of her character. That her fixation on Sonic somehow makes her lesser and an individual (something Tails is never accused of for some weird reason despite being in similar positions to Sonic role-wise), and so it is continuously made out that Amy needs to be "fixed" . However I do not believe this is the case. Rather a large degree of it is simply the writers doing some gaffes in properly informing the nature of Amy's love to the audience. It doesn't help that unlike Tails, Sonic had not as quickly acclimated to Amy's presence, something I feel contributes FAR more to people liking Amy in say IDW than simply tossing large portions of her character to the wayside. Sonic is the main character, and so his attitude towards a character informs a lot of how people feel they are meant to view the character. Amy in general is very much Disney princess-esque in regards to her relationship with the concept of love. She very much believes in true love, the goodness of humanity and the merit of chasing your happily ever after. And I think that's a good trait to have. It ties into her divination and sense of faith as well as her "girlish intuition" and propensity for appealing to the hearts of people. One of my favorite Amy moments, one people I feel dont give enough credit, is her talking to Elise about love. Amy plays a key part in helping Elise build confidence in herself and embrace her love which let's her even for a brief moment, her away from not being able to just express herself and be a girl. Its imo instrumental to how Elise is able to muster the courage to save Sonic ,(people's opinion of the kiss itself notwithstanding) I find this invaluable and what I largely see as attacks on Amy's love to me rather misplaced and something sorely missed when treated as a writing flaw. The problem is more that the writers sometimes don't make it clear enough this love extends to things beyond Sonic and/or Sonic doesn't have enough moments where he shows acknowledgement of Amy's merit as a person in his circle, despite repeatedly being listed as one of his best friends multiple times.
Man, I want your graphics design prowess! Your visual design and editing strongly amplifies your writing. Speaking of: the final sentence hit me hard. I want this Amy!
That last part of the video reminds me of why Batman is oft considered the greatest of all superheroes. He’s a normal man with the greatest risk and the most to lose yet he’s always right there in the front lines with the rest of the Justice League. Its a shame Amy gets derailed so much, for she actually out of the cast has the best potential for a high quality spin off game. Collab with Inti Creates and use a Mega Man Zero gameplay engine. A lot of Zero’s sword EX skills, Shield Boomerang moves, and even the basic charge sword attack could easily and justifiably be incorporated (using move pool ideas from Advance and Battle). Set it two years after Generations, add in Little Planet returning, put in Metal Sonic as the main antagonist, incorporate the trademark brutal but fair MMZ difficulty and presto. One bit not covered in the video that I feel is wasted potential is a potential relationship dynamic with Shadow.Think bond with Maria extends to Amy in a confidant relationship.
In Sonic X, I know it's not perfect lol, but eventually, she gets her own bubble by caring for one of the birds trapped in Eggman's robot and helping it get bak with it's family. It was really cool tbh
This is really strong! I particularly loved the editing of those scenes to have Amy stand out amidst the black and white cutscene footage while you were talking about her separation as a normie from the super world around her. Stuff like that really hammers home the true strength of these videos; you're a master of your craft. I will say, I'm not particularly sure the gap was bridged enough between "is she a normal girl?" vs "is she magic?", but one thing is certain: she's a good character, and I'm happy to say you understand her pretty well.
Oh I totally buy the psychic theory. I’d almost go as far as to say; frankly she gives off the untapped power character vibe. _If you’ll just follow me in my dreams._ Her Heroes theme song I think points to the possibility, the fact she can talk to certain characters that literally _no one else_ can. The fact that she just poofs up at the most RANDOM places, and winds up in the middle of some very very dangerous situations. That she has in several games been given multi class capabilities. Something very very few characters have the honor of. I’d hazard either that, or this girl got in too deep, really early, and has some latent investigative skills which lead her exactly to what she wants. Which would make her a great problem solver and leader. Obsessive perhaps, but that just means if she were to put her hyper focus on a goal that she’d get to the root cause faster than many. Note that in some comics before IDW that she was surprisingly good at finding things. Often very very important things…to Sonic. Mind, her motivations should probably grow as she matures as a character, but I imagine once she’s had the chance to kinda break down the wall between hero worship and reality, she’ll be beloved by the fandom in a renewed sense. Cause she has fans, let it be known, I have seen points in her characterization that i’ve genuinely liked. But her maturation will take time, something fans won’t get to see as well as they could have should she have been handled competently from the beginning. As a love interest to the speed demon? Hey I’ve seen crazier happen in fiction, and when she’s calm he seems oddly drawn to her in a way I find absolutely sappy. Or put more bluntly, take away the desperate and you have a normal girl, who’s got a ton of positive qualities (polite, considerate, sweet, caring, _compassionate,_ loyal, and at times rather intelligent), that understands the madness that is Sonic’s life. She _gets it_ but has a hard time turning off the desperate intensity. If she’d had that opportunity to be written more reasonably earlier in canon (like her characterization in Unleashed) as a transition point between say…heroes and now (post Forces) then we could see the maturity evolution more clearly as a narrative. And frankly, Sonic has show deference to her in more recent fiction as a grounding point for himself. Like, a rock in a storm, he can reliably use her character as a sort of ground when things get too nuts. It happened ONCE in all these years, and it was in freaking Sonic and the Black Knight. One of the more painful games in the series, as mechanics go, but narratively when the world was going nuts he went to her character’s representative for guidance. Similarly after his recent stent in Forces, she’s one of the first people he winds up running into. Besides Tails and Knuckles, he’s known her the longest. Which in a way, kinda endears her to him from a narrative perspective of ‘gosh we’ve seen some shit huh?’ But alas, I see her as one of the seminal missed opportunities in his storyline. And maybe one IDW will fix, to the jarring of the old fandom’s nerves. But i’m of the opinion she’s needed an overhaul. For a long long time.
This is such a great video! Amy is such an interesting character and it's so rare to see or hear her even being talked about effectively anymore. Also the editing is top notch!
You explained why I can't come up of a fitting "Amy" game. I've thought of other solo games for other characters but not Amy. Sure mechanically you could create a fun beat em up with her and her hammer but it probably wouldn't feel right. Ludo-narrative dissonance and all that. From what I played she fights to defend herself or others. She is there as a connection to others. She brought Cream and Big together to help them find their friends.
There are other ways to do it, I mean, my idea is using her connection with fate and start from there. If she has the ability to predict the future then you can build a story here.
Y'know, I always forget that Amy isn't really that special ability wise. We have hedgehogs who can break the sound barrier with relative ease, super geniuses, an echidna that can turn giant rocks to dust with one punch ect. ect. In comparison, Amy's just a girl with a comically large hammer and yet she's just there with the others and no one bats an eye. she may not have special powers but she does have a will to see the good in others and fight for those she can even if she has to work harder than everyone else.
I love this so much. When I got to the end, the way you said she represents the best in us actually brought me to tears. I'm glad people are starting to see her for who she is.
Man... Amy in the cómics it's just awesome!! I haven't read IDW yet. But un Archie, she is a beast and a good write character. Aldo, i think that is one of the best versions of the character. 🌹
About Amy’s good traits: she’s helpful, attentive, hardworking, caring and loyal. And as for her bad ones: she’s overly stubborn, obsessive and can be annoying in some instances as well as sometimes (but not all of the time) overly positive and hyper (as if she’s had ten or more cups of coffee).
I founded Amy to be funny quirky a long time ago but now I find her at her best when her behavior gradually adapts to the moments that go on around her. To me I always find the fangirl aspect of Amy to be great potential. Not just of Sonic but the ideal image of Sonic that she sorta wants to be. It's to the point she talked about hanging with Sonic from her flashback in SA as "...chasing bad guys" that subtly reveals a hint of heroism in her at least through Sonic before her own adventure begins. And as disappointed as I am they didn't use Amy in the story of Sonic Advance 2 for some reason, the fact that she is unlockable shows her drive to not want to miss an adventure even if she is not involved with the main story of things.
Love your video! Personally, my favorite iteration of Amy is in Sonic Boom, the game shows her as valient archeologist and the show gives her tons of personality, plus the little Sonamy chemestry and teasing is really good
I saw your video just today and was amazed with the work you put in it.. I to am a sonic fan... And had always loved amy... A lot of fans thought that she was just annoying and served no purpose but that wasn't true... So when I found your video... Not only did I 1000% agreed on it... But the video somehow inspired me and have me this feeling inside of me that I wanted to do something in my life... Which is weird but... You know what great job 👍 worth watching 10 times :>
Here’s a fun fact her stalker attitude is likely a slight humorous reference to their species going into heat through extended proximity with potential mates irl. Basically it translates that one of Sonic and Amy’s creators probably had a pet hedgehog or maybe somebody in Marketing. The rest is just translating it Organically to the target audience while making her Marketably consistent ie Becoming the main Consistent default female lead etc. So besides acknowledging it existing for Mobian hedgehogs as well which opens up a lot of unnecessary cans of worms considering it would require bringing up biology in general. The best way to fix Amy would be to introduce on a more consistent basis others of her species , gender and age group.
This is by far the BEST take anyone could ever give on Amy, she's a young girl and doesn't know a lot about love still so as she grows older and learns more about Sonic, that obsessive side can become more blunt and the affection can become more bold, on top of that it's amazing how her character simply develops from an obsessive girl to a more calm character who takes the lead and charge on things to help out others, so what if they never end up being together? They both still have a lot of learning to do, and Amy still has a lot of growing to do as well, I love SonAmy but this honestly just puts that ship to the side, we need more stories about Amy as a whole, a whole story for her like Shadow got his spin-off game, she's heavily disliked because she can come off as annoying to others while she's heavily misunderstood but no there's a lot more to her than people really see into her, and with Shadow getting his own spin-off that tells the tale about how he came to be and gives an in-depth story of him as an entire character, we need that for more characters, we need that for Amy, she DESERVES a story of her own to really be looked into so that people can truly understand who she is as a whole, not just some background character who's obsessed with her hero, but a character who deserves more love than she gets, she's a perfect representation of a child too, a real human being child with what she believes, and the perfect representation too of a human being with good intentions, no, great intentions! When people actually look deep in her, she's one of the best, if not THE best Sonic female characters to have ever existed in this franchise, hands down.
Nice video~ Wish others could see that Amy always had a personality throughout if you just don't look at her iodlizing sonic as her only trait. Ambitious, helpful, and always helping strangers she doesn't even know, and just building herself up in strength so she's able to keep up with the rest of her friends. Figure why you have Amy's trio of Big and Cream who don't really stand out as much either, but work hard to protect thei friends. Especially Cream, whom I'm sure looks up to Amy. Wish the writers wouldn't have made it into such a defining trait than just some running gag being more of an obsession where there would be certain installments where that's all it her personality was along with ruining other characters. IDW does such a good job in giving her more screen time and showing how much she's doing while it's wearing her out. Taking a leadership role and being good at it, yet it's mentally wearing her down. Showing how much she cares for all her friends and welcoming new friends with open arms. Really just amplifying traits that were always there and shown to grow over time. Didn't care much for Archie Comics as they always seemed to play her downa nd then just kinda Thanos snapped her out of the one with Sal and Sonic married with kids along with various other characters, but they legit showed nothing with Amy at all. (Whole comic was a whole drug trip i swear). Wish they would do more with that foresight of hers. Very nice theory with her being in places at the right time and following her gut instinct.
I still like Amy from Sonic Adventure 1. It plays it off like she was weak and managed to be strong, but her hammer skill was so fun, her hammer flip and running about.
I really don't think Amy's actions in the Adventure games are given the credit they deserve. She was a big part not 1 but 2 character arcs. With no Amy, Gamma wouldn't have changed his ways and freed his robot bretheren. With no Amy, Shadow might not have unlocked that last piece of Maria's true wish. Sure she has a huge crush on Sonic but that's not everything she is. Amy is a friend, a loving soul who can get in the way sometimes but ultimately is better to have around than not. She's proven that herself.
Helping Shadow was Deus Ex Machina BS. She just so happened to say the exact words Maria said to Shadow, causing him to remember what her actual final wish was. At least with Gamma, it wasn't specifically what she said to him, but the fact that Gamma himself is a bit quirky in his own right and was able to have a reaction to not the specific words Amy said, but the simple fact of her protecting the Bird despite knowing nothing about it just because it was the right thing to do. THAT was a good moment for her. The attempt to mimic this with Shadow is almost as contrived as everything involving Elise and Iblis being sealed inside her.
I guess the first game that totally ruined Amy was Heroes because of how repeititve the whole I wanna marry you was but like in Heroes and Shadow and Sonic 2006 Amy still cared about those around her, in 2006 especially Amy helped people like Silver and Elise when she didn't even know anything about them and that is something I really like about her so the game that only made her a fangirl and nothing else was either way Sonic Rush or Sonic Free Riders. Still my fav female sonic character, nice video btw
Heroes marrying comment is a continuation of the SA2 joke from when she freed Sonic from his prison. It's not meant to be taken so seriously. The problem is the cuts from game to get released included more bits about them trying to find Cheese and Chocola. They were fighting Sonic because they saw the chao with "sonic" in the newspaper and had been trying to find him. There's a reason that scene feels cut short the most.
I mean this is literally what I view the definitive Amy Rose to be anyways. Not some master fighter technician or something that gets some kind of skill to make her independent from Sonic and and stand along side them. I like that she admires Sonic so much because that’s her concept. That’s her schtick. But when she started getting angry or even becoming obsessed, that’s not the Amy I knew from SA 1 and 2. She was compassionate and wanted to prove her compassion was something she could fight for in her own way even tho she wasn’t like the others. And that was her reasoning for even being involved in SA2. And in the end she Talk No Jutsu’s Shadow. lol
That ultimately defines Amy, she is very human and to some extent worldly. She was not born with powers or gifts, she herself was forging them over the years, she sought to improve herself and show Sonic that she is not a burden or a drag, putting his life at risk even knowing that Sonic or any Chaos user could do better, but he prefers to try hard and do the best he can. That made her different from Sally, who practically received everything on a silver platter, was born in glory and received everything for being a princess, just like Blaze; Amy sought to earn something besides the love of Sonic: your respect. That Sonic saw her as a companion of hers, ally or even a heroine who is a role model, as Cream idealizes Amy or as Shadow saw in her a symbol of hope. Amy Rose the Hedgehog is the example of perseverance and maturity in both the worst and the best moments, being a sincere friend and not being a jerk like others.
I also agree with you. In the Archie comics she was a little girl who grew up in Merica during Robotnik's reign and heard stories of a heroic blue hedgehog named Sonic and began to write tons of fan mail to him and after being rescued by him vowed to fight along side him and the Freedom Fighters. With the help of a magic ring and some training from Julie-Su, in about a year, Sally acknowledged has a fully fledged member of the team. Amy to Sonic is like Deku to All Might. Deku who grew up watching All Might saving people as a little boy and wanted nothing more than to become a hero like his idol who strives to protect the happiness and smiles of those around him. Amy who while has a huge crush goes above and beyond a fangirl sits by the sidelines but a fangirl who worked to become the kind of hero like her role model. Also in Archie there was a moment where she wished to become older but it only made physically older and still had the mind of a child. I actually like this because to me it means the idealistic child that wanted to fight bad guys and refuses to give up did not die. And this brings me to my personal favorite moment in Archie Sonic; after suffering some repeated losses after losing Sally, Antoine and Bunnie, Sonic had fallen into a depressed state believing that the Freedom Fighters are done for. But it was Amy (along with Tails) who snapped him out of it; to quote Amy: "You didn't quit when you got arrested. You didn't quit when Robotnik came back. You didn't quit when we lost old Mobotropolis, or Knothole, or our families, or any other time! So get up! We've got Freedom Fighters to save!". This to me sums up Amy's character; even if the world has gone down hill and even in the face of her hero losing his will to fight, the child like spirit in her heart refuses to cave in to despair and instead re inspire her hero to continue the fight because even he has given up she hasn't and she has him to thank him for that.
Oh my fucking god this was beautiful. I love your editing skils and the way you talked to all of us with your thoughts. I never comment on people's videos like this, thank you.
Those tarot cards may be cards but boy are her readings incredibly accurate. She practically predicts the future, and she swings a mean hammer to boot.
I like how you kept the crush on sonic, a problem that a lot of male writers have it's that a girl cannot be a good character or a personality if they're in love, so they're heartless warriors Dear writers, please write characters having a life outside the main story
Damn! Your presentation and edits are top tier awesome man! I hope you wind up getting greater recognition because you are no lie, amazing at what you are doing. Great job, Grand video, Transcendent Talent.
Hey man, it's so good to see you again!! It's been too long my guy. I really love what you do and I hope you can continue to do so. This video was great and I'm so glad that there are fans out there such as yourself who try to fix what's broken in this franchise, because it is quite a lot. The way I see it, Amy has the potential to be a great character in Sonic when she's well written, but the topics you brought up about her are very interesting and thought-provoking. Good job homeboy and have yourself a merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Continue to be way past cool! Oh also, do tell, what's next for you??
This video has a valid point; true, the IDW series and "Sonic Unleashed" are a good starting point, but this video explores a means of further development that would be beneficial to Amy.
Man, that was great. Amy isn't special. Everyone else contributes some superhuman - or superspecies, I guess - power to overcome evil, they're all there because they have a duty to be there. Amy is there because she wants to be. And that makes her kinda special.
6:31 the start of getting into her powers. 9:25 and we get to why she *is* here. Why she helps out, despite not having strong powers, intelligence, or sense of duty like Shadow, Sonic, Silver, Tails, or Knuckles. Why… she helps.
Exactly
She was training to look more skiny in Battle.
She kinda had an eating disorder in Battle but yeah I see what you're saying.
Sonic Battle Amy is genuinely one of my favorite iterations.
Joke comment aside:
Just give her more interactions with characters that could use it, like Shadow and Silver.
Agreed Amy is a good character they just don’t use her well she has a lot of potential still
@Ryun Chan She also helped Shadow remember his true memory of what Maria actually wanted from him
the humanity part is my favorite, the idea of Amy being show as a normal person without any power or responsibilities, yet she's willing to help with a big hammer just to help her friends is, really interesting.
Fun fact she has powers!
It's to do with mystical
If Amy didn't have powers, she wouldn't be able to keep up with her friends.
Same! Too bad they basically gave her magical powers in Sonic Frontiers... So much for being normal. 😅
The last part you described they kind of _did_ do with Sonic Boom Amy.
Yeah like in IDW. I don’t really agree with this guy about IDW Amy. I think they did her pretty good in those books. I can buy Amy becoming a leader.
@@Cr4z3d true that.
When it comes to amy’s love for sonic, I feel like it’d probably be more of a crush than obsession. Casual seems too friend zoney.
That’s a really good point, went over my head!
(the same as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles because all 4 of them were stopping the train with their arms)
Amy pushing Knuckles away is more of a funny gag, because Amy stands no chance against Knuckles (only being able to survive his attacks not beat him).
That’s why I think they’re meant for each other.
Absolutely, this is why Amy’s story is my favorite one in sonic adventure which I think is the best portrayal of her:
She loves Sonic (she shows it, she talks to him and even monologues on her enthusiasm towards him) but that’s not all.

When the world needed him most he returned

As always this is an amazing analysis of Amy’s character and the ideas you bring to “fix” her are pretty great. As I’m sure you know, I find myself in the camp of people who think Amy is too different now (more specifically in Boom) compared to how she used to be, and I think your idea for fixing that problem is pretty in character and would be satisfying to see happen. The best of humanity thing is also a pretty perfect description of her, alluding to her speech about humanity to Shadow.
I disagree with what he said about her in IDW. I think she still shows these traits there.
@@antyep It has to do with the change of writers, it used to be Flynn but now Evan Stanley is writing for IDW.
Idk, She had more personality before imo.
Then you have Rouge who did see a dark stuff.
Unlike most characters where fans have a good idea of how these characters should be, Amy is often to be recommended as one of two things:

@@rynobehnke8289 The backpedal was in response to people saying they wanted her back to status quo and part of the group. It was going to last longer but he decided to can it before Evan took over as head writer.
Amy being the leader of resistance is a retcon
Though I was getting a bit annoyed the fact that everyone calls her obsessed even though she wants the best for sonic and the fact that people think she "doesn't deserve sonic," this still made me cry. Amy is a big influence, she represents the best, she puts herself in danger for the sake of others. I still can't believe how people hate Amy.
It only applies to a modern version of Amy. The classic version of Amy is honestly nothing.
ENG
Big: I don't know why everybody's mad at Dodon Pa.
We know.
JPN
Big: Why is everyone speaking ill of Mr.
Yaaay. ♪
Amy: That's not what I mean!

Or they show us a huge plate with many varieties of cookies, then tell us we're only allowed to eat the plain sugar cookies. Occasionally, we can add sprinkles.
I don’t understand why everyone forgets she’s 12 years old, I don’t care what anyone says but sometimes it’s ok for her to act like this, maybe if Sonic characters were still aging then I would agree that all of them have to grow up because their constantly put in danger so it’s ridiculous for them to act the way they do but everyone’s lives and maturity levels are different, sometimes it’s fine to act a certain way
Ugh translation has been a big issue for Amy for a long time. I would’ve thought they would get their act together by now but No!

E-102 Gamma you mean?
I don't know how to explain it, but to me Amy was at her best as a narrative character and as a playable character in the advance series
She doesn't have a lot of dialogue but all of her animations, her playable abilities and the scenery she goes about just feels right
Like she's a passionate version of sonic where as sonic has his "cool" motif, amy has a caring motif while playing identical for being the speed character (and yes maybe it's nostalgia and the music throughout advance has this magic and wonder feeling, I still think they're some merit there)
Anyone else feel like whenever this guy speaks, he breaks reality?

@@antyep Also I will admit I haven’t read much of Archie so my view of Amy is mostly based on the games and sonic x.
@@antyep I guess I can agree perhaps this should be a one off thing and keep Amy mainly just a part of smaller groups helping her friends and kind of doing her own thing like she always has.
I was actually gonna mention the BK date also, but figured that's probably common knowledge for folks so they'll pick up on it
@@ALtheBoi I actually didn't know about it, never did play black knight, secret rings I did tho.
I feel like these two sides could be a fun take but I never see it
I didn’t even talk about her temper cause I think it’s actually a great character trait, if directed properly of course
I like the idea of Amy being the "kirby" of the Sonic universe: if you just look at her she's the one girl to clown on all the time, but gets deep when you look into it
No, not at all
Kinda fair, but
Not only it's relative, given the people she surrounds herself with are typically not "normal" powered individuals, but it's also speaking from a character writing pov
Lore, random gameplay feats or obscure trivia shouldn't limit your creativity, as long as you're not breaking any rules or displaying someone as completely out of character, I'd say go for it!
I LOVE the idea of Amy having a secret kind of foresight that she doesn't even know about! It would give a lot more depth to her tarot card thing.
i never actually thought about how amy doesnt have any powers or special responsibility or something until this video, i like that you pointed that out. sounds silly but i quite like characters that are like that, where they dont have any powers or big responsibilities.
Nah bro Amy DEFINITELY has powers. She can steamroll bot armies with ease like everyone else. She shoots tornados out of her hammer for crying out loud.
DUDE! I only had time to watch the video now I'm amazed of how much you improved!
GREAT WORK MAN!!
Its imo instrumental to how Elise is able to muster the courage to save Sonic ,(people's opinion of the kiss itself notwithstanding)
I find this invaluable and what I largely see as attacks on Amy's love to me rather misplaced and something sorely missed when treated as a writing flaw.
Amazing video! Amy has a sweet soul and has always been one of my favorite characters
Thanks for adding Spanish subtitles, your videos are too good and it's a shame that not everyone knows English to enjoy them.
Which in a way, kinda endears her to him from a narrative perspective of ‘gosh we’ve seen some shit huh?’
But alas, I see her as one of the seminal missed opportunities in his storyline.
The editing on this video was so compelling!! Love all your takes here
This really was such an incredible watch!! Immediately subscribed
I love the transitions of your sonic videos, they're something... Different. It's great. It's pleasant and interesting.
Ya back and better than wvery I presume judging by the quality of the thumbnail
Amy having foresight is SUCH A GOOD IDEA ugh i love it
Here’s a fun fact her stalker attitude is likely a slight humorous reference to their species going into heat through extended proximity with potential mates irl.
This is some of the slickest production I've ever seen. I subbed. Continue the good work :)
This is such an amazing video! Its writing and editing are both top-notch! Fantastic job!
Nice video~
Wish others could see that Amy always had a personality throughout if you just don't look at her iodlizing sonic as her only trait.
I love the editing! Also gave me literal chills at the end, lovely stuff mate!
Free Riders was the final nail for fans for she was REALLY unlikable in that game. Sega then took that fangirl aspect and left her with nothing.
God, even rewatching these is still a treat
Really needed something like this after some bad thoughts rn
appreciate the stuff you do man
I mean this is literally what I view the definitive Amy Rose to be anyways. And in the end she Talk No Jutsu’s Shadow. lol
The editing style of this video is CRAZY i love it
That ultimately defines Amy, she is very human and to some extent worldly.
I never comment on people's videos like this, thank you.
in my opinion, amy doesn't need fixing. the story needs to be fixed so that this pink hedgehog could shine as a character.
Those tarot cards may be cards but boy are her readings incredibly accurate. She practically predicts the future, and she swings a mean hammer to boot.
I like how you kept the crush on sonic, a problem that a lot of male writers have it's that a girl cannot be a good character or a personality if they're in love, so they're heartless warriors
Dear writers, please write characters having a life outside the main story
