Peugeot 406 MAF Sensor Problem

  • I had a problem on the 406 where it felt short of power, but it was not in limp mode.
    In first gear it felt fine, but between 2nd and 5th the turbo was late in kicking in, it took until 3000 rpm until it kicked in, which in real world driving conditions meant an awfully long lag period then a sudden burst of power making it not safe for pulling out of junctions/roundabouts or overtaking.
    Ive read on the internet in the past the symptoms of a bad MAF sensor, i couldn't see any faults come up on the PP2000 machine and unplugging the MAF sensor quickly cured the problem and highlighted that the sensor was indeed the issue. Thankfully it wasn't anything mechanical.
    At first i attempted to clean the MAF sensor with a cleaner specifically designed for these sensors but it did not work, i didn't want to spend any more money after spending £9 for the cleaner. Conveniently i am stripping another 406 for parts, although its a HDi 90 and mine is a HDi 110 a quick check on servicebox shows that the part numbers for the MAF sensor on both cars are exactly the same, i swapped them over and the car runs fine.
    Although this wont solve all performance related issues on the HDi engines its very easy to determine if the MAF sensor is faulty by unplugging it, as a matter of fact i drove my car around for 2 months with it disconnected without any problems.
    As for the reason for the sensor going bad, i keep my car well serviced but i do spray EGR cleaner in it every year when changing the air filter, i usually spray it through the air filter lid which means it passes through the MAF sensor, its possible that the spray has affected the sensor, but this is only speculation, the sensor is 10 years old and could possibly have just broke. However as a future precaution i will use the EGR cleaner but spray it in the intake pipe behind the MAF sensor.

    Thank you so much for posting this. It solved a problem that has been bugging us for years. At least 5 different mechanics failed to find this fault, but your video of the same symptoms and the simple test diagnosed it straight away. Fixed the next day and our 2003 406 has a new lease of life. At nearly 300,000km I had pretty much given up and figured it must be just old and tired, not long for this world, but it's now lively and a joy to drive again. Cheers.

    Many thanks for your videos I had the same issue, no engine management lights on and car was ok but had got very sluggish especially on hills, disconnected the MAF and holy moly what a difference it was alot quicker, I will be ordering a new one today and I also watched your video on how to change the fuel filter but had given up in the past as was afraid to undo the housing without damaging it but watched your video and changed the filter. I think the map sensor if properly broke can cause all sorts of running problems, and it depends on how you broke the sensor, if you broke the pipe coming from the intercooler you will have a boost leak, whereas if you broke the plug it might just be an electrical issue

      Hi - Yes I am in Sydney. A little annoyed about the money I've wasted with mechanics but very happy that the problem has at least been identified. I am driving around at the moment with the MAF sensor disconnected until the part arrives. The local price for the MAF sensor is about $278. I've instead bought it online from UK at a cost of about $75 delivered to my door.
      I really like my 406 its a great little car Thanks again

      Hi John
      After getting no joy from Kmart Tyre and Auto in Wahroonga I was directed to a business called Auto Gearbox Services in Hotham Parade Artarmon who apparently had the diagnostic tools available for identifying faults with Peugeots. They put the car on their computer and could not identify any faults but still charged me $98. Next I went to Hornsby Service Centre in Hunter Street. The Manager sounded very confident that he could identify and fix the problem. Instead he performed some type of service that did absolutely nothing and charged me $475. After that I gave up on mechanics and made my own inquiries. I still am very grateful for the information posted on line

    • @johnmeyer4252
      @johnmeyer4252 7 лет назад

      Yes I can see you have done the same as most citroen owners have. I also had some work done by Prestige at Atarmon and certainly they do a good job but charge like wounded bulls! The hourly rate is what kills this for most Citroen owners. I do not mind paying but hate overpaying. Same with Carrol at Roseville, good but very expensive! I wonder if there is any feedback on S&G Automotive Repairs at 1/95 Hunter st Hornsby. Another one in Frenches Forest Peter Haremza ?? There again I certainly would NOT pay for services that does NOT resolve the problem. To charge $98 to connect to a laptop to get the fault codes is also very steep. Should be either no charge or max $20 !! Problem too is there are so called mechanics out there that think most people are too naive to know anything, not realizing that the WW Internet is providing us with not only RUclips but Google as well and so yes we can get a lot more information on the repairers as well as the parts we can source from many other sources than just in Sydney only.

      I will try, although this car has been off the road a couple of years i bought a 2.2 estate and more recently replaced it with a 508 2.0 HDI

      The taxi movies are okay a bit of comedy to them, for me the 406s best moment on the big screen was in Ronin. What an absolute gem of a film for any car enthusiast let alone a French car enthusiast you have them all 605, 406, XM, Xantia even some other cool cars like the S8 and big Merc.

      The transporter was another masterpiece of car chase camera work, not sure but there always seems to be something about using narrow french city streets that adds to a car chase.
      Although having owned a few 607s including briefly one of the V6 models with the adaptive suspension i don't really think they could keep up too long with an E38, they are more suited to wafting about and long motorway runs, airport taxi in taken is a more realistic role for a 607 haha

    I have an old 106 1,4i or called the 106 xt. It doesn't idle correctly. It keeps reving the engine and sometimes just stays at 750 rpm instead of the normal ~1000. I can see that the idle regulator motor that sits at the end of the speeder cable keeps adjusting back and forth when the bad idling occurs. First I thought that the idle regulator was faulty. But this might also be caused by the maf sensor. When you press the speeder gently in the first 1-4 centimeters it tends to jump. I can sometimes completely kill the engine if I just keep the speeder still pressed down the few centimeters.
    I don't know if this Is a problem that you can shed some light on?
    Could it be the maf censor?
    Thank you!

Also diagnostics show that there is a problem with EGR too, so I'm considering removal and cleaning EGR (I can't find cleaner spray, and maybe manual cleaning gives better results). Can you give some guides how to remove EGR since it is pretty unreachable and it would be much easier if I know where to look for screws.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  7 лет назад

      The only video i would consider making on the EGR would be if the engine is out of the car, its one of them parts you scrape the arms off yourself to get at on the bigger cars like the 406 and C5 on something like a 307 its even worse.
      They dont cause many issues generally speaking on the old DW10 2.0 HDi engine. If you have EGR issues the car will be significantly down on power and make lots of black smoke. This was the case with my mums 2000 Xsara 2.0 HDi. I tried EGR cleaner and the engine had an incident of run away on the cleaner fluid. The fluid also did not really work. In that instance the EGR should have come off for manual cleaning.
      In the end i disconnected the vacuum pipe going to the EGR and put a bolt in it, and a plastic cap over the electrovalve where the pipe connected. Solved the problem on the Xsara by disabling the EGR. A cheap and easy fix.
      However if you are still interested i have pictures of disassembled DW10 engines showing the inlet manifold and EGR valve. Send me a PM if you want them.

    • @nemanjavasic917
      @nemanjavasic917 7 лет назад

      Replacing the MAF was the cure. I also cleaned EGR and it's really hard (removing is hard and putting back is almost impossible), and after all it was OK, so cleaning was unnecessary but I did it anyway.

    The engines on the 2 cars are exactly the same. The 110 is just having it`s software upgraded to max. The autoindustri is making several models of cars with the same engine. The software has just been customized to the need of the car models. They save a lot of money because they dont have to invent a new engine for every car model they produce. As simple as that. Thats why you MAF is the same type. You could swap the entire engine and then put the software from the bigger engine into your car and its the same result. 3:53

      There are a few other subtle differences between a 90 and 110.
      The dual mass flywheel, intercooler and boost piping and i believe the method for controlling the turbos boost. I also think that a 90 used a siemens ecu while the 110 uses a bosch.
      There is also talk that the crankshaft on a 90 is the same as an XUD but i have never compared the two in that way.

      jamie rodgers Haha your right there, looking at them gearchanges were decidedly abrupt. Normally they change much smoother, the gearbox is still fine. The DMF is due a change soon though, although at this age its done well.

      Hi
      Yip the DW10 engine is found in the C5, the egr is attached to the exhaust manifold which is tricky to get to because its between the engine and the bulk head, i have removed it in the past but your working blind most of the time and its tricky. If you can go onto service box, or citroens equivalent and look at a diagram of the intake manifold where the egr bolts onto that should help, but i do think on some engines the EGR is held in place with a metal clip which needs to be replaced. wynns egr cleaner is easy to get hold of and much handier than trying to clean it out, although if the EGR valve is badly clogged then manually cleaning it would be required.

    I have a 406 Hdi 110 and occasionally when in third gear , you can feel turbo kicking in then goes sluggish and slow to accelerate , doesn't seem to do it in any other gear , would this be maf related or something else cheers
