Finally a good Badlander review from a person, who plays Rectifiers. This thing has a unique gain/eq interaction, you can't give it to an average Joe and expect a good tone out of it. Sounds great. Way tighter than I'm used to hear from this beast.

I've never played a Recto that sounded ideal right out of the amp. The 3 channel models of the early 2000s sucked. The late 90s revision G Triple Recto was great if you put a Boss EQ in the loop and cut some of the high fizz and some of the lower-mids. Rectos are okay at best. For metal, the Bogner Uberschall is better.

So many people barking about the price... i had the same argument when I was talking to Mesa's mid-west regional sales director during my Mark V purchase & I'll never forget his response. He told me "don't look at it as an amplifier purchase, look at it as an investment in your musical future." I plopped the money down right then & there. These amps are for practicing musicians who at least partially earn a living being musicians. I'm just a small time regional nobody but I knew quality when I heard it. This one's worth every penny too.

Nitpicky comment from personal experience, a huge upgrade over previous versions..... they finally ditched the "impossible to see onstage" knobs and gone to a knob design where you can give the amp a quick glance and know what the story is. When you have a rig with pedals and a previous version.....if something is off....investigation was hampered with that knob design, and onstage, or with a room of other musicians that just want to play....that it is a heaven sent.

    Hello,
I really enjoy watching your videos about Mesa Boogie amps.
I played TriAxis/2:90 back in the years and sold it.
After having a long straight acoustic playing period, I recently bought a 2x12 combo Roadster, which sounds incredible.
4 channels that give me a wide range of sounds, all usable for me. I love tweaking the sound in Spongy, tube rectification for cleans, breakup sounds and hard rock sound. When it is time to go to the 7 strings world, bold and diode rectification are the best for sure (or at least diode rectification and spongy mode).
The Badlander seems to be more user friendly and plug and play (with up to date options as the cab clone). But the Roadster and Roadking are incredible piece for gear.
I would enjoy watching a video from you about the RKing and Rster amps.
Thank you for the high quality of your work and the analysis. You do a great job. Thanks and take care.

    • @CarcPazu
      @CarcPazu 3 года назад +4

My guess is that they both dialed the amp differently. They're two different players, different guitars, pickups, picks, mics, preamps, different rooms, cabs, cables, string sizes, tunings. All this adds up to very different tones. I personally preferred Ola's tone, but I'm all about Death Metal, so I'll always side up with Ola for sound. But Fluff brought something different to the table, I can appreciate that.

Over 2 years ago I got cochlear implant in right ear which enables me to hear better which is why I decided to learn to play guitar. Now I gotta learn more about amps, the Mesa Boogie rectifier amp? I am confused. Can the rectifier work all by itself or does it require the bigger cab amp? Yep, very naive beginner. It would be excellent to have a video explaining the different amp components without using brand names and specs. Many thanks for this video well done.

Have you found that while monitoring the IR out, you get two signals? I haven’t figured out why but I get a cold, weaker signal that is always coming through my monitors even with monitoring turned off (this is the only sound I can get from the headphone output too), and then with monitoring on I get a nice, full-bodied sound in addition to the other signal, but the full bodied one is the only one that gets recorded…if that makes sense.
I’d like to be able to get that full, hotter sound in the headphone out for practicing but I’m not sure it’s possible. It sounds nothing like the recorded IR.

No, it’s not the same as a Mesa, but it’s damn close to a jcm for less than half the price. When is the price of amps going to come down to a reasonable level? Same for guitars as well. I’ve built a guitar from scratch and yes it’s time consuming but I see very mediocre guitars selling for upwards of $1000. Are we all just going to keep excepting these prices or what? Prices will never come down unless we stop buying these ridiculously priced instruments.

You're comparing an amp built in a tiny factory in northern California to the highest reasonable build standard possible, to an amp built to the absolute cheapest standard possible in a giant factory in Guangdong on a production line that runs mixers and pedals on 2nd shift. The prices on Mesas are not going to come down massively, because they are already priced quite aggressively against their actual competition (at least in north america). They aren't really interested in competing with amps that fail in 5 years

@@dw22509 oh yea, I can definitely afford it, there is no reasonable way to justify high end prices. I own a few really old high end Gibsons, and love them all. The materials being used and the amount of labor involved doesn’t add up to what they charge these days. Insane markup. I’m not saying high end should go away, just needs to be priced a bit more reasonably. I’m not saying it should be dirt cheap either, just more accessible for a working musician.

@@mattlombardi54 Dude, simply not true in the least. I'm assuming $7.50/hr is still a fair minimum wage too. Inflation is a thing and the buying power of the dollar is sinking. Considering what these amps used to cost in the late 90's vs now, they HAVE come down in price. By a fair amount, even if the number has gone up. You want a Recto for $1200? Buy one used. Mesa is a business that pays individuals to work for it, likely a fair wage, in California. I'm sure they offer benefits as well. Its still a smallish shop, so production numbers aren't going to be what Fender and Marshall put out. Which means parts have a higher cost than they would for either of those companies. That's aside from the fact that they use higher quality parts in general. Talk to John Suhr about how razer thin his margins are in his shop.

Not only are the Badlander amps better to me than most Engl amps (Not including the Engl special edition founders edition) for modern Metal by themselves, they also have a better clean channel sound to me. I think some Engl amps and some other amps are better for old school metal and rock tones if you are looking for that.

You cannot hear this amp without a tubescreamer because the ts circuit is built into it. I think i still prefer the rev f since you can get a great full sound and then boost the hell out of it. With thr badlander you are kinda stuck with a slightly harsher squishier sound. Not a bad thing but just a preference in taste. Great video!

During zero band practice / gigging COVID times filled with the best VST plugins and modelers ever you have to have big ball energy to even think about dropping a tube amp on the market, especially in this price range. Mesa crushed it. Crystal clear mix-ready definition? GTFO. The metal tones are insane. Insane. They are so organic that they go beyond being characteristic: they're personal. As if you'd have an angry beast on a leash to make a bond with. This amp will reshape music genres. It's on fire.

This looks great! So far, my fav has always been a good 50w Single Rectifier head. With 50 and 20w modes, this looks like it would be amazing. Have my doubts about the quality of the headphone output, though. I've watched a few vids on this amp and no one ever talks about the sound from the headphone out aside from mentioning it's there, in passing.

Meh...I have a 1979 LP in white (really cream coloured now) that I keep for nostalgia reasons. These were dirt cheap in the 90's. I would never pay the kind of money Gibson is asking for the Adam Jones model....not for a late 70's LP. My PRS's are way better than any Gibson I have ever had. Keep that SE....it is a great guitar. As for the Mesa....save up...trade or sell gear....do a payment plan....lots of ways you can make it happen! :)
