Yearrrrrrs later and I still can't get over how still Emily keeps her head when she lets it rip at 2:16. I dunno man it just intensifies how insane that belt is.
I dont know who directed this award show, but they should be spanked for keeping the long shot all throughout the big finish. I want to see their faces as they're tearing it up! Darnit. They sound so amazing like this, imagine hearing it for real. Just wow.
@Thomas McKee I was fortunate enough to see them on Broadway back in the day. It was THE MOST AMAZING SHOW. Still the most moving show I have ever seen on Broadway.
I CANNOT get over this. There voices are flawless together. Emily Skinner needs to do more because she's fantastic. So gorgeous. And A-Rip? Seriously, I have no words to describe how wonderful this is.
Yes, we all get that they can't PHYSICALLY leave each other, but it is an expression of love that they will never be emotionally apart. Stop being so cynical! Sheesh...
I'm feeling this right now! "When the day is filled with shadows That stretch into the night I am filled with your sweet comfort Like morning fills with light"
After all of these years, I’m still obsessed with this song, and this performance. My God! It still brings me to tears sometimes watching and listening to these two sing this tearjerker, Damn Waterworks song. I have to listen to this song over and over again, because I want to sing this song with Maisie’s Musical Duets on my channel. I refuse to screw it up, because it’s one of my fave Broadway musical female duets of all time. That and Maisie’s an amazing talented Broadway singer. Can I get a “Break a leg!” everybody?
I love, love, love this version/performance of this song...simple, straight-forward and honest. Bravo...that's how classic songs should be presented...
@andsectumsempra for year I thought alice sung that final note but I just realized Emily jumps up to her head voice there... Gorgeous blending!! Wish they could still sing this song like this
I know! They muddled the opening, but they rolled it off so amazingly that you could never tell unless you knew the lyrics beforehand. They don't even show it on their faces. :3
Actually, if you are familiar with the lives of the Hilton Sisters, it was not ironic at all. In the case of conjoined twins who, the death of one twin leads to the death of the other, unless the twins are separated in emergency surgery. Unlike many twins, the Hilton sisters lived out their days in modest existence and had a pact that they would never separate, even at death. When one died, the other would follow.. and that is indeed how their lives ended. So, no irony at all. :)
Violet: What have we done? Daisy: Learned the truth Violet: Closed a door Daisy: Opened more Violet: I'm scared, Daisy Daisy: Of what? Violet: Being alone Daisy: But you're not You never have been If we stood on our tiptoes We could peek over the sill And once in a while we would see a girl Slowly walking up the hill Violet: And we'd think what a sad situation To be outside on your own Daisy: To go through the town with no playmate Violet: To go through life all alone Daisy & Violet: I will never leave you I will never go away We were meant to share each moment Beside you is where I will stay Evermore and always We'll be one though we're two For I will never leave you Daisy: When the day is filled with shadows That stretch into the night Violet: I am filled with your sweet comfort Like morning fills with light Daisy & Violet: I will never leave you I will never go away We were meant to share each moment Beside you is where I will stay Evermore and always We'll be one though we're two For I will never leave you Daisy: No, I will never leave you Violet: I will never leave you Daisy & Violet: I will never go away We were meant to share each moment Daisy: Beside you is where I will stay Violet: That's where I will stay Daisy: Evermore and always Violet: Evermore Daisy & Violet: We'll be one though we're two Daisy: One though we're two Daisy & Violet: For I will never I will never I will never leave you
In terms of harmonies, yeah Alice belts the higher ones EXCEPT for the last note, where they switch and Emily is in head voice on the higher note. This is written into the score as well. :-)
KILLS IT. I mean, call a janitor, get a mop and bucket ... blood across the stage ... kills it. Amazingly beautiful. Tears every single time I watch it.
i love this! when i first saw this i didnt look at the title so i didnt know it was alice and then i was like "WOAH! omg it sounds like alice ripley" and it was! they are amazing.
You know, this is a great show, I love Alice Ripley, I’m sure I’d love Emily Skinner, and I do get the sentiment in this song, but I just have to say that the writer had to have been a little drunk to write a song about conjoined twins saying they will never leave each other. LOL!!!
since I saw Alice Ripley in Next to normal I´m a huge fan of hers! You go girl! Keep working! I´m sure we will hear a lot about you in the next years :-)
I was on the facebook page for broadway across America & someone asked what the most underappreciated broadway show was. The votes were nearly 50/50- this & chess.
@LoftierThanMine Agree completely, and I hope that a talented team brings it back. It does have a reputation now that would help sell it that it lacked the first go around, and the last several seasons have shown that musical audiences are open to more unusual subject matter- did we ever think that a musical about bipolar disorder would win three major Tonys? Some shows just are ahead of their time (Chicago) and some just need to be reworked (Assassins). We can hope!
@xxboxers1 Just checked- it was up against The Lion King, Ragtime, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. The Lion King won. Three of those four were excellent shows. Skinner/Ripley lost to Natasha Richardson for the revival of Cabaret. No comment.
This musical seems like it's going to be a challenge. My highschool has selected this to be the musical for the year. I was casted as Buddy and I'm extremely extatic about it, but this musical seems VERY challenging. Wish us luck! ^_^
They should have won the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, not Bebe Neuwirth. If you remember they were the first ever pair to be nominated for one Tony award
@BeautifullyTragicLFB They couldn't figure out how to sell it to theater goers nor the Tony voters...the night I saw it the theater was nearly empty. It's was a phenomenal show, but it's dark and complex- people accept that from Sondheim, but not from many others.
I have some questions, I really hope someone can answer them :) Who sings the higher note in the end? It is really difficult for me to hear, but I guess it is Violet, right? Since Daisy sings the lower parts/the second voice in the chorus. And is that last high note Eb5? Please, help me! :D
+illcoverit Yup that's an Eb, and it was Daisy (Emily Skinner). Violet (Alice Ripley) carried most of the high belting throughout the song. She actually belted to the same note (Eb) a few times close to the end of the song. I guess it must have been unhealthy for her to sustain that Eb with a chest voice. Emily had a strong head voice (she sang soprano beautifully) and I guess it was healthier for her to sustain that very last note for the harmony. I loved Alice's belting back when she was in her prime, because she almost always did full belting and not really a mix. Most beltresses only mix nowadays to ensure the longevity of their vocal health., but nothing is as thrilling as a full, in-the-mask belting.
I always thought that Alice was nervous or sick when she did this. I found out the reasons she looked like she did was because she was really sad to do the Tonys, because the show had been closed for 6 months and had to get into the character again
@stevepotfora7461 No, she was not. I vividly remember the way she looked when they showed her and Emily when their names were called. Then she admitted to being depressed at the Tony's in the Side Show documentary.
The persion/people who think this is dumb are missing the real point here. Whether or not they can *physically* leave each other is irrelevant -- they are declaring love and affection for each other. To have such a strong bond with someone is remarkable, and that's what this song celebrates: unity, family, love.
Just wow.
Exactly what I was thinking!!
@Thomas McKee I was fortunate enough to see them on Broadway back in the day. It was THE MOST AMAZING SHOW. Still the most moving show I have ever seen on Broadway.
I know I'm quite randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online ?
I just keep coming back to this
I love sideshow and I love alice and emily.
2:24 whoever growled there is my new hero.
That's an Alice growl and I will never recover from it.
Words can't describe how incredible this performance and these two ladies are. I love them both, together and separately!❤️
Alice Ripley always goes so hard and that's why she's my spirit animal
"That's the first time I ever said the word fierce!...That's the second!
Taylor Nelson I love this 😂
2:16 Take notes children, that's how it's done
I come back to this video every month or two and it never fails to give me chills.
I CANNOT get over this. There voices are flawless together. Emily Skinner needs to do more because she's fantastic. So gorgeous. And A-Rip? Seriously, I have no words to describe how wonderful this is.
I think I've watched this at least 15 times and it still amazes me every single time!
Yes, we all get that they can't PHYSICALLY leave each other, but it is an expression of love that they will never be emotionally apart. Stop being so cynical! Sheesh...
This song is absolutely beautiful
I'm feeling this right now!
"When the day is filled with shadows
That stretch into the night
I am filled with your sweet comfort
Like morning fills with light"

im sooo happy its coming back to broadway!!!
I loved Side Show and still listen to the score often.
Still get goosebumps watching this especially from 2:15 on. Cannot wait to see the revival.
This will never not be iconic
That growl does something to me 😩😩❤️❤️
Some times I watch this when Im sad and then get more sad because I wasn't alive to see it.
I love, love, love this version/performance of this song...simple, straight-forward and honest. Bravo...that's how classic songs should be presented...
Friggen gorgeous..makes me think of my sister and my best friend. Perfection.
They were so gorgeous here. Love them!
I literally almost cried. I just played Jeff in that show!! This was one of my favorite lines! :)
the best duo ever to perform
@andsectumsempra for year I thought alice sung that final note but I just realized Emily jumps up to her head voice there... Gorgeous blending!! Wish they could still sing this song like this
Oh my god I love this musical and I can't find it anywhere on youtube. Thanks for putting this up!
This is just amazing!!! I just keep coming back!!!
Beautiful
Still probably the best tony performance EVER!!!
Gives me goosebumps every time i listen to it!
Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful hands down! Such a performance to such a daring emotional show!
Melted every face in the theatre off.
What so touching is these to women found out a day before this performence that there show was closing ....
I know! They muddled the opening, but they rolled it off so amazingly that you could never tell unless you knew the lyrics beforehand. They don't even show it on their faces. :3
Amazingly talented women!
Actually, if you are familiar with the lives of the Hilton Sisters, it was not ironic at all. In the case of conjoined twins who, the death of one twin leads to the death of the other, unless the twins are separated in emergency surgery.

Violet:
What have we done?
Daisy:
Learned the truth
Violet:
Closed a door
Daisy:
Opened more
Violet:
I'm scared, Daisy
Daisy:
Of what?
Violet:
Being alone
Daisy:
But you're not
You never have been
If we stood on our tiptoes
We could peek over the sill
And once in a while we would see a girl
Slowly walking up the hill
Violet:
And we'd think what a sad situation
To be outside on your own
Daisy:
To go through the town with no playmate
Violet:
To go through life all alone
Daisy & Violet:
I will never leave you
I will never go away
We were meant to share each moment
Beside you is where I will stay
Evermore and always
We'll be one though we're two
For I will never leave you
Daisy:
When the day is filled with shadows
That stretch into the night
Violet:
I am filled with your sweet comfort
Like morning fills with light
Daisy & Violet:
I will never leave you
I will never go away
We were meant to share each moment
Beside you is where I will stay
Evermore and always
We'll be one though we're two
For I will never leave you
Daisy:
No, I will never leave you
Violet:
I will never leave you
Daisy & Violet:
I will never go away
We were meant to share each moment
Daisy:
Beside you is where I will stay
Violet:
That's where I will stay
Daisy:
Evermore and always
Violet:
Evermore
Daisy & Violet:
We'll be one though we're two
Daisy:
One though we're two
Daisy & Violet:
For I will never
I will never
I will never leave you
These 2 bury the revival pair.
In terms of harmonies, yeah Alice belts the higher ones EXCEPT for the last note, where they switch and Emily is in head voice on the higher note. This is written into the score as well. :-)
this show is amazing
Fierce doesn't even begin to describe these women.
So beautiful
So amazing. Every single time I watch it. UGH. Loves it.
so so so so so good
KILLS IT. I mean, call a janitor, get a mop and bucket ... blood across the stage ... kills it. Amazingly beautiful. Tears every single time I watch it.
2:24 gives me goosebumps everytime!!!!
i love this! when i first saw this i didnt look at the title so i didnt know it was alice and then i was like "WOAH! omg it sounds like alice ripley" and it was! they are amazing.
I absolutely love both of them. Watch Emily's face starting at about 2:48. I don't know why, but I love the way that smile slowly grows onto her face.
You know, this is a great show, I love Alice Ripley, I’m sure I’d love Emily Skinner, and I do get the sentiment in this song, but I just have to say that the writer had to have been a little drunk to write a song about conjoined twins saying they will never leave each other. LOL!!!
My choir director saw the revival when he was in New York. He said it was amazing.
since I saw Alice Ripley in Next to normal I´m a huge fan of hers! You go girl! Keep working! I´m sure we will hear a lot about you in the next years :-)
I got the shudders, love it
alice ripley is a theater goddess
I was on the facebook page for broadway across America & someone asked what the most underappreciated broadway show was. The votes were nearly 50/50- this & chess.

"Like" if you don't cry at a lot of things, but you cried at this!
This is the most touching number I have ever heard.
Hearing the song for the first time with this performance, and then hearing the recorded version.... it doesn't even compare.
@xxboxers1 Just checked- it was up against The Lion King, Ragtime, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. The Lion King won. Three of those four were excellent shows. Skinner/Ripley lost to Natasha Richardson for the revival of Cabaret. No comment.
I've watched many performances of this song, and none of them even come CLOSE to this.
IT'S COMING BACK!!
Jennifer Schapire ...and closed yet again.
+Rocketjay12 it's returning to Broadway this fall 😄
+Caleb Miofsky nope. already came and gone.
+Brent Fabian Rayburn really? Already? I thought they were opening it again this fall
+Caleb Miofsky yeah. It opened in Nov. 2014 then closed in January.
I came here to watch Alice Ripley...but who is that amazing goddess next to her?!?! This is just the best.
I think it's Emily Skinner
best Christmas gift; saw it with Mom January before it closed
who's Mom?
Mom January, duh
woman who gave birth to me ;)
the January before...
How did these two not win the Tony this year? Who could top these two?
They deserved their Tony so badly, but that was the year of Cabaret.
Thank you fellow [tos]ser. Thank you.
Stunning
This musical seems like it's going to be a challenge. My highschool has selected this to be the musical for the year. I was casted as Buddy and I'm extremely extatic about it, but this musical seems VERY challenging.
Wish us luck! ^_^
SSSLLLLLLAAAAAAAYYYYYYY
I really think this is better than the soundtrack recording...
Wow. It's really interesting what happens when I revisit old Tony performances. Now I know why the name Alice Ripley sounded so familiar....
I've seen this a billion times and I still get chills!
ah-mah-zing
Omg amazing
We'd love to have Alice Ripley. She's fierce!
THIS IS RIDICULOUS!
@huffelpuffheir yeah, she's blown it out, a bit, but she still has the stage presence and acting skill
Alice is so beautiful
They should have won the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, not Bebe Neuwirth. If you remember they were the first ever pair to be nominated for one Tony award
fucking amazing! seriously!
Alice is just too Beautiful.
@MrOneManShow1992 Alice Ripley is on the right and Emily Skinner is on the left.
@BeautifullyTragicLFB They couldn't figure out how to sell it to theater goers nor the Tony voters...the night I saw it the theater was nearly empty. It's was a phenomenal show, but it's dark and complex- people accept that from Sondheim, but not from many others.
Well... I was not prepared for that
usually I am not a fan of alice, but she did good in this :)
EMILY SKINNER JUST KILLS IT AT 2:16 (In a good way) So. Fierce.
I have some questions, I really hope someone can answer them :) Who sings the higher note in the end? It is really difficult for me to hear, but I guess it is Violet, right? Since Daisy sings the lower parts/the second voice in the chorus. And is that last high note Eb5?
Please, help me! :D
Daisy takes the high note ;) odd because its one of the few times they cross vocal parts.
Thank you so much!! I just made a cover of this song, would be cool if you'd check it out. Again, thanks! :D
+illcoverit Pretty sure Alice Ripley sung the higher note.
Not on the last note ;) they cross and daisy goes up
+illcoverit Yup that's an Eb, and it was Daisy (Emily Skinner).
Them performing this song is what told me the show wasn't doing well. They should have performed "come look at the freaks or tunnel of love"
This performance was after the show had closed in January lol
@@sheismymom I saw it in previews and left NY.
I from tik-tok from Chris and Ian 😍😍😍
@Jarrod005 nahh the delete was an accident. i stand by it.
The real Daisy and Violet would have loved this!!
first off loving the harry potter name, second off is that comment [title of show] based? also, thanks for uploading they are super fierce
Just frickin' AWESOME!!!!!!!!
@MusicStudyMan They're Siemese twins. That's why they're not moving.
I always thought that Alice was nervous or sick when she did this. I found out the reasons she looked like she did was because she was really sad to do the Tonys, because the show had been closed for 6 months and had to get into the character again
You are conflating this with their performance on the Rosie O'Donnell show. Alice was fine for this performance here.
@stevepotfora7461 No, she was not. I vividly remember the way she looked when they showed her and Emily when their names were called.
Then she admitted to being depressed at the Tony's in the Side Show documentary.
no on left is emily skinner and right is alice ripley
FIERCE
haha yea that pretty much sums it up :)
The persion/people who think this is dumb are missing the real point here. Whether or not they can *physically* leave each other is irrelevant -- they are declaring love and affection for each other. To have such a strong bond with someone is remarkable, and that's what this song celebrates: unity, family, love.
@MusicStudyMan they were supposed to be conjoined twins...what were you expecting? a dance routine?
