Is there anything more satisfying than a Broadway cast tap-dancing in unison then stopping suddenly to sing in unison? I mean, there's Anything Goes, King of New York, Friend Like Me- personally, it's one of my favorite sounds in the world
You know, I think tap dancing is so interesting because you are not only dancing to music, but you are making music at the same time. Quite a skill, that.
Klespyrian I have been tapping for a long time and I love it. A lot of people think it's too hard without really trying and don't do as well. That being said, Sutton Foster is amazing. Also if you want to see another super talented tappist look up Sarah Reich or her RUclips channel sourtaps. She also does collaborations with Postmodern Jukebox.
In many musical numbers like this over the years, you have a fantastic lead singer who sings then stands off to the side while the dance ringers do their number. Not here. Doing the singing and the entire dance number, too? I won't insult her by merely calling that "talent". That's talent + hard work, folks, and the result is outstanding. Bravo!
@@itzblu855 The thing is, Jeremy Jordan is notoriously bad at dancing (no offence Jeremy Jordan, I still love you), while almost all the other members of the cast have had extensive dance training, and can perform moves that no person should be able to do with their body.
THIS IS BROADWAY at its very finest--jazzy, cheeky songs, amazing tap, and exquisite costumes and sets. Numbers like this thrill my soul; thanks for sharing/posting on YT.
I love that moment at the end, where it's just the choir singing before Sutton belts the last lyrics... That moment, when she looks out at the audience and you can just see the 'Yeah, we did that' sassy pride, and then when she turns around and openly marvels at the absolutely brilliant cast she's working with... Sutton Foster is just so brilliant, it verging on unbelievable... XD
Sutton brought a youthful and exuberant energy to this number that I've never seen before. You can tell she's having an absolute blast and her joy is completely contagious. Her voice is lovely and crystal clear (LuPone over-performed it in my opinion) and it rather blows my mind that she's such a talented tap dancer too.
***** I agree for the most part, but I still have a lot of respect for her. I saw her in Gypsy a few years ago, and I thought she was very well suited for that show. She's been in the business for a long time and her voice is as strong as they come, but she tends to play her roles so over the top that I can never see her as her character; I just see Patti in a wig.
+prettymonsterofevil I'm also acting on stage and I can tell you ''over-acting/-performing'' is much harder than the most people think. I really like the way Patti Lupone plays her roles, you can literally feel her energy. Of course, Sutton Foster is also fantastic, especially her dancing but I think Lupone is the better performer, her attitude combined with her amazing voice is just delightful. Otherwise I can understand why some people don't like this kind of a performance and I'm totally okay with that. I just wanted to share my opinion. (Sorry for my HORRIBLE English, English isn't my first language)
Lets also remember the time frame, the 80s-90s when Lupone was really popular, theatre was becoming extinct. They needed people like her to bring the audiences back and she did just tht, so I have lots of respect for her.
Can all you GAGA fans quit the "GAGA sings it better" comments. GAGA isn't on Broadway, singing a classic rendition of "Anything Goes" - Sutton Foster is. and that is exactly why she won the Tony.
I could watch this all day Sutton Foster is insanely talented and makes it look so easy she makes it look so enjoyable and so fun that’s why I love Broadway I love this number so fun so enjoyable
Dear Gaga fans saying Gaga sang it better: "See, on Broadway we don't need extreme close ups to prove we're singing live. We sing live Eight shows a week....check it." ~Neil Patrick Harris (Edit: I love Gaga don't get me wrong and dang I didn't know people would like this.)
i am so happy u mantioned neil patrick harris, he is one of the best actors in the World and just Think he would like for Life ship would be nominated for presenter in Oscars forever... I would Love That !!
I've never really seen a tap-dance number except in old movies. But the way they abruptly ended that number.....DUH, DUH, DA-DA-DUH...BOOM!....all in unison,, with Sutton tilting her head back slightly as if to say, "Yup. We got this." I was SREAMING at the screen. Absolutely mesmerizing!
Went to see this show at the Barbican in London, summer just gone 2021. Watching on YT it’s amazing but watching this live is out of this world. I was mesmerised by Sutton Foster. I totally adore this lady, dancing, tap dancing, singing and of course acting. She makes everything seem so easy and flowing. An tremendous natural talent. Hats off to Robert Lindsay, Felicity Kendall and Gary Wilmot, who all played good parts but.... Sutton Foster is, without doubt STAR of the show❤️
It's even more impressive when you consider that this routine was cut in half for the Tony Awards show! The actual stage production is just shy of eight minutes long, and yes, Sutton belts out the chorus after dancing the entire time.
Wow. Words cannot even describe how amazing these performers are! My tap class just finished learning this same exact tap dance today which we will be performing for our May dance recital. They make it look so easy when this dance is so physically demanding and incredibly fast. Singing is my passion and I couldn't imagine singing perfectly as they do while performing this tap routine! Truly awe inspiring!!
She made me FEEL that I NEEDED to tap my way around life again.... with that happiness..... I could watch this video every day.... hahha, like I do at least once a week. Love Cole Porter and especially this one...
Holy crap! This was absolutely amazing -- Mind you, I saw the original broadcast on CBS, but I enjoyed seeing it again in more datail once again. This woman is truly amazing! Her singing and dancing are everything! All the while, she seems like an average girl: unpretentious, affable, and humble when appearing on talk shows... She could almost for a second fool you into believeing she's just an average girl without the amazing talents she has!
I saw this last night at the Barbican in London and would just like to confirm that it was as good, if not better, than this performance. Sutton literally has not aged a day. And it was the first time I have ever seen a West End audience give a standing ovation at the interval. One of the best things I have seen on stage in 20+ years of going to the theatre.
Sutton Foster and this entire amazing company made this performance look so effortless and easy and GODAMN IT HOW CAN YOU BE SO TALENTED THANK YOU FOR EXISTING 💛👏👏
I love this version! I much more prefer this to Patti LuPone's version in 1988..... because I could understand the lyrics! Clear, crisp, and beautifully sung.
Okay just to have a good opinion on this i just listened to the gaga version. I mean she is alright but i dont get why everyone says she sings it better than sutton foster. I wouldnt listen to gagas version again. But suttons version i could listen to on repeat. Gaga sings it in a more pop kinda way which doesnt really fit the song. Her voice doesnt really convince me either. And also sutton has won the tony for this for a good reason.she kills this performance. She is an amazing performer. I am not saying that gaga isnt. Its just not her genre at all.
Gaga doesn't have that strong a Broadway voice, she's singing it in a very jazz style. She started singing jazz at the age of 13 and it was put on a jazz album.
Anyone notice that in the theatre production, there were 6 sailors and 4 angels. For the Tony's, 7 sailors and 5 angels. Thinking that for the Tony's, the swings got to perform, too.
Beautiful. I love this old Cole Porter song... I wish there was more of his stuff music wise than the Fallout stuff.. At least you can buy some of his movie collections in places ;o
*aggressively tap dances*
Abi Alston tap dancing is fun 😙
*snaps fingers and taps at you* your in the wrong part of youtube buddy. you lost?
In the script of Thoroughly Modern Millie in the song 'forget about the boy' it said dancers breakout into a murderous fit of tapping...
*breathing has left the chat*
In other news, Sutton Foster doesn't need oxygen.
pffhahahahhaha
Soo True
More like Oxygen needs her.
A regular Ethel Merman!

All my imaginary friends are currently applauding for my amazing 2 year run in my bedroom theatre production. Thank-you and goodnight.

Goodness, even the name ‘Sutton Foster’ sounds straight out of the 30’s. I can almost imagine it in Braggadocio on a theatre poster.
Right??!!! SERIOUSLY
Anyone else feel extremely out of shape
lilyann168 HAHAHAH OMG YES. And Sutton is 44! I’m 27 and feeling like 80
Yep, i gotta start losing weight

it’s what i call, “patty’ing.”
what about how she perfectly hit that note at 3:54 after the non-stop tiring routine? absolute talent
They are doing so much practice for that
Life goes on j
She has almost a whole chorus to rest and catch her breath. Not denying her talent or technique.
