I don't care what you say - none of those Broadway divas could dance for four solid minutes and then end the song belting in perfect straight tone.
She is The Triple Threat of Broadway.

My goodness. The pitching, the phrasing and diction, the use of her air in multiple ways (vibrato, on-spot colocation of the notes, singing long sentences); the 4 minute, beautifully-executed dance, yet more immediate great singing for another 30 seconds like she just hadn´t done a hell of a dancing, just to end it all with a final 10 seconds high, sustained, belted note....
Thats what I call condition!!! This woman is extraordinary!!!

@@ShonaBlumeneau it’s the same role but completely different styles
Pattis was focused on her incredible voice and not so much her dancing
And Sutton’s was focused on her voice and and dancing
Both women are incredible and did way more than was expected of them
They were just asked to do different things so I don’t really think it’s fair to judge when their songs look completely different
I prefer Sutton’s but in no way is it better than pattis just like how pattis isn’t better than Sutton’s

What I love about this, is that the individual moves aren't really that hard. There are hard moves here and there, but what's show stopping about it isn't the moves themselves. It's the incredible timing, formations and noise of the things. It shows that sometimes simple is best. Being in time is more important and more impressive than being able to do 50 wings in a row.

There's also a 1936 filming with Ethel Merman, which isn't exactly a thrill - but it at least (mostly) follows the plot and score of the original. The 1950's version is ... well, I'll say it -- just Hollywood ruining another Broadway musical.

I think Sutton was a better Reno than Patti because I like the tone of her voice better, her sense of comedic timing is lightyears better than Patti's over-acting in my opinion, she can enunciate unlike Patti, doesn't overuse her vibrato which gives the song variety, leaving the singers out there wondering when she'll use it again, she is a dancer unlike Patti, and out of the two I'd say her voice fits the musical style of this shoe better. Patti's voice would be great for something like Sweeny Todd (again, she overacted and the accent was horrible) but Sutton rules this production. And for those people saying Sutton isn't as legendary as Patti - She has the same amount of Tony's in a shorter amount of time, unlike Patti she CAN do everything, and she's had some shows written with her in mind (Shrek, for example) too.

She is not "flat," her straight tones are spot on pitch and add variety to judicious use of vibrato, instead of a continuous bray. And, this rendition also includes an ending verse not used in '87. Every other verse is there along with the extended tap number that stopped the show every night.

@mmbr01rrf @mmbr01rrf I didn't recall seeing splits in either show (SJB or Sutton) and according to Stephanie, they didn't change any of the choreography for her. It's exactly the same routine as Sutton performed. The thing that really struck me about this show was how everyone looks like they're having so much fun. And @ 79 years old, Joel Grey is as sharp as ever. It's a contagiously fun experience.

@turkeypopcorn Series sold, Sutton was finished with her last matinee on March 11, and SJB took over on or around March 15. Check the Roundabout site. Series will be on ABCFamily and is filming now.

Where & when did you see her perform on stage ? I'm beyond 70 and last saw her live twice at the end of her career. While that was a treat, seeing Ms Foster as Reno on stage last year far exceeded that for me. Ms. Merman did not dance at all and ALWAYS froze her performance before opening, something Ms Foster does not do.

I wish I had gotten a chance to see her. Unfortunatley, I am about 1000 miles from NYC so that is nearly impossible. I only get up to NYC every few years. I actually made it up just a few weeks ago, but since Sutton wasn't in it anymore, I decided not too see it. The ones I did see were Wicked, Porgy and Bess, Sister Act, Spider-Man, and Avenue Q (Off-Broadway).

@zuzupetals1999 Definitely was a split or extreme extension during "The Gypsy in Me" number with the Lord Evelyn character in the Second act. A couple of faster ones occur in "Gabriel". And there is an interview with SJB where she states those were the only changes made. The interview was done just prior to her initial replacement job.

I agree. It just shows how far we have gone that some (like lifeinapan) consider this an adequate rendering of Porter's wit and genius. Maybe if he listened to some of Merman's recordings from the 1930s, they might get that one can sing loud and bold without hog-calling.

Patti and Sutton are awesome in this. But I missed Anything Goes. It left Broadway like last month and I didn't see it. I'm sad. I hope it comes back
