When I was young, the Carol Burnett show meant family time around the living room console TV. We all had a good time laughing together, WONDERFUL MEMORIES, never forgotten! Thank you, Ms. Burnett!!!
The moment when Sutton Foster came on screen to sit next to Carol Burnett and their eye contact and admiration for one another made me cry for so many reasons. It felt like the passing down of a torch and a mission, the handing over flowers to an icon, and two very hardworking performers honoring themselves and the hard road they had to bear to meet and accomplish their goals. CBS Sunday Morning remains one of my favorite shows because of interviews and profiles like this one. And thank you for featuring and honoring two people that I've looked up to for a very long time.
Carol Burnett is authentic, brilliant and just so damn talented. Sutton Foster, I feel the same about her. Much and continued success to them both. #Broadway #NYC #ActorsLife
I love Carol Burnett! Watching her each week was part of my formative years and I wouldn't want to change a thing. Thank you for sharing such an inspiring story about an American gem.
I'm so glad we had this time together Just to have a laugh or sing a song Seems we just get started and before know it Comes the time we have to say So Long. 😂🎶❤
If anyone gets a chance just watch Carol in Once Upon a Mattress. I never laughed so hard and her expressions are hilarious. She is so special and really understands what comedy is all about and knew how to make everyone laugh!
I would put on the original Mattress soundtrack record on when no one was home, stand in front of the mirror and lip synch Shy, Sensitivity, Very Soft Shoes and Happily Ever After over and over again. It gave me tremendous joy.
Carol, you're an icon to so many of us. And Sutton is the perfect choice to walk the same path. Women supporting women. Everybody get on board. You can feel the power in this.
"Mattress" is such a great show. My sister played Winifred in her school, I played Jester in mine, and even our dad was in a production. Carol is an unmatched queen of musical comedy.
A friend's brother worked on Broadway. When Carol came back in the mid 90's to do Moon Over Buffalo he worked on the show. He said that she was WONDERFUL to everyone and was one of the nicest people he had ever worked with. That made me happy to know that she was genuinely a nice person.
Carol I watched your show every Saturday night with the family.Dad was almost in tears with laughter each week. I'm still watching this unique show every night.❤ 😂 I admire all of the physical comedy you did for us.Thanks! You look great!❤
What a treat to have Carol Bennett back in the spotlight! I grew up watching her show and love hearing her stories in these interviews. Love from Detroit, Carol 💛
Patricia Lavin cast Ms. Burnett in her first role while she was a journalism major at UCLA, Howard Hughes saw the production & the rest is history. Ms Lavin also cast Ron Howard in his first role. Amazing how very talented & strong women influence our entertainment AND POLITICS!
It is amazing and so many of us are clueless about the behind the scenes people (often women) who influence our socialization and help move society forward without us having a clue how great their influence has been on so many of us. I was a teenager in the early 70s and Carol Burnett, Cher, Lily Tomlin, Gilda Radner all were women free to be silly on tv without worrying about their appearance. I had a sociology teacher in college in 1974 (I was a nursing student) who asked the class who were all female why we wanted to be nurses. Why didn’t we want to be doctors? I got his point immediately, but lots of us fought with him insisting they wanted to help people, etc, He said doctors don’t help people? You’re all smart enough with top grades to be doctors, so why are you here? You’re mostly here because society told you women are nurses and men are doctors. You have been socialized to believe that is your role. He opened my eyes to all the pledges of allegiance and various “American“ values we never questioned. Carol was one of the women breaking barriers and changing our perceptions of what was possible in our world. Everything was changing then and still over 50 years later, we are being pulled backwards in the worst ways. As you mentioned, behind the scenes were trailblazers we weren’t even conscious of how their choices affected us. Anyway, love this woman and her graciousness and kindness and the example she set for so many people. Have a lovely day!
This is my special show. I did costumes for high school production many years ago. I had already seen Ms Burnett do the show on tv and fell in love with it. Ms Foster truly is the perfect actor to play Winnifred. I wish I could see this new production but thrilled it has a new life on Broadway again.
Carol had a unique voice that was so strong. These days they all sound like they've had every single bit of individuality surgically removed. No thanks. Yay Carol.
I grew up watching Carol Burnette on television. I knew nothing about her Broadway career. This piece is very insightful and entertaining. Good luck to Sutton Foster!
My mother made sure I saw the television special with Carol when it was broadcast....because, she told me, at the age of about seven, I was just like the princess and the pea (too, too sensitive!). I guess she was on to something. And I loved the show, of course. I was always crazy for musical comedy, anyway. That show was delightful!
Saw Sutton Foster do a 1 woman concert years ago. She had such star presence & so talented & gifted. She may not be a big name, but I remember her performance like it was yesterday.
Looks like a wonderful revival. I was on stage, ensemble, in 2 NJ community theater versions of it. But it would have been such a thrill for Carol and Sutton to have been a part in both of them.
I forgot how talented she is ! Thanks - SIDENOTE: Her daughter is part of the "Stephanie Miller & Co. " Podcast! (Political ,Comedy, Commentary/NEWS )! Also very good! Thanks Sunday Morning! 🦘💙
Oddly enough it was offered to Mary Martin first who knew she wasn't right for it and turned it down...also Anne Bancroft who reportedly said "You'll never find anyone to sing those songs." (at least Anne was Jewish!)
Both great ladies of Broadway. This production of Mattress started with a City Center Encores production with Sutton Foster. There is another Carol Burnett show that would be a great vehicle for Sutton Foster: Fade Out Fade that was a big hit on Broadway but then got off track for a number of reasons including a taxi cab accident The show has a book and score by Jule Styne and Betty Comden and Adolph Green It may be a sore spot with Ms. Burnett who got sued by the producers but it is a fun show that would be perfect for Sutton Foster. Here's her big show stopper "Go Home Train": ruclips.net/video/NkZOVCotxNE/видео.htmlsi=WJL7nUINAVfbv3FL
When I was about 10 or 11, I was thrilled to get my parents' hand-me-down very small (maybe 12X12?) black and white, tube, of course, TV. It went on the dresser in my closet and I could see it from bed. One of the things I could get on it was the Carol Burnett Show. Only problem was,v it was on after my bedtime! So, I'd go to bed, be very quiet...my parents would quietly open my door so as not to disturb me and check on me about a half hour later. THEN I was free to slowly slide open the closet door, trying not to let it make noise and turn on the TV . Without the sound on, of course! And waaaaay before closed captioning., which would've helped. Nevertheless, I would love every minute. I was only caught one time. They just turned off the TV and sternly told me to "Go to sleep". I sneaked that every Saturday night until I was finally allowed to stay up later! Such wonderful memories. And, of course I enjoyed the show even more when I could actually hear it!
Sutton Foster states that she watched the Carol Burnett show every week and that it inspired her to be an actress. SHE WAS 3 WHEN THE SHOW WENT OFF THE AIR!!!!

Carol needs to be treasured for who she is and was. Comparing her to anyone is doing her a disservice. She and Lucy were both strong women taking charge in a time when it was really difficult but they are so different. Burnett was always a team player where Ball was always someone who needed to be front and center. They admired each other but when the opportunity came to work together on Lucy's new sitcom in the 60's they both realized it would never work. Carol had guest starred on Lucy's show and they did great playing off each other but weekly? Nope.
Carol is 91 here..... let THAT sink in.... a true comic, actress and treasure 😊
Nowadays we throw around the word “legend” way too often for celebrities who don’t deserve it. But Carol Burnett is a LEGEND!

In all seriousness, are you a writer? That was written like a professional review.

Sutton is adorable
There is nothing like live theatre. Nothing.
With live music!

My mother loved her. I love her. Everyone loves her.
Wonderful. I remember the earlier TV special and of course The Carol Burnett Show. Sutton Foster is perfection.

Sarah Jessica Parker also did a revival on Broadway.
Sutton’s had a hell of a good run the last couple years: Music Man opposite Hugh Jackman, Sweeney Todd with Aaron Tveit and now this

"Unafraid to be ridiculous".
