- Steps to reset your Surface Pro from the USB drive IF you copied your Recovery Partition onto it. This wipes out everything on your computer and restores it to its "out of the box" condition.

You are 1000 times more useful than Surface support after 2 hours of chatting they gave me no solution and all that I needed to do was push the volume button plus the power .... Isn't that incredible..... Microsoft should fire their support people and pay you lots of money for your easy to follow support .... Thank you very, very much!!!
After wanting to get rid of Windows 10 and go back to 8/8.1, all the information on the internet was useless until I was lead back here (I had seen this before, but forgotten the details).
Only when I followed your instructions did I get anywhere at all. Windows 8 in on and updating.

Thank you sir! Good Tutorial. One more thing to remember, if you have a micro sd card installed, take it out or you get an error trying to boot from the usb flash dive.

Download and create a USB recovery drive from another PC
To download the recovery drive, you’ll need:
- A USB drive with more than 4GB storage capacity.
- A PC running Windows 7 or later.
Here’s how to create the recovery drive:
1) Download the recovery drive files.
a) Go to download.microsoft.com
b) In the Search box enter Surface RT Recovery and the press Enter.
c) Tap or click on Surface RT Recovery in the search results and follow the instructions on the
screen to download.
2) When the download is complete, create the Surface USB recovery drive.
a) Insert your USB drive into the USB port of your PC.
b) From the desktop, open File Explorer.
c) Tap and Hold or right-click on the USB drive and choose Format.
d) Select FAT32 as the file system and enter a Volume label to name the USB drive, such as
RECOVERY, and then tap or click Start.
e) Tap or click OK to erase the contents of the USB drive.
f) Tap or click OK when the format is complete.
g) Copy the contents of the recovery image you downloaded to the USB flash drive.
@@8000860 The recovery image is larger than 4GB, will any other format work? Or does it have to be FAT32?

Trying to reinstall Win 10 home on a computer ruined by a failed Win 11 upgrade on Surface Book 2. I don't understand why what I see being different. I made a bootable Surface Recovery USB. I booted the computer by holding down vol down and power buttons. I did see the selections for language and keyboard. The option I see on the Surface Book 2 are different and when I go to Troubleshoot> Advanced, it displays a blank list of devices I can recover from, prompts for installing drivers, I don't even know which one I would choose and tried all usb*.inf files and no luck. Now it is asking me to connect to a network folder.
I followed your steps and I keep getting an error that says "Insert your Windows installation or recovery media to continue". I have copied my recovery partition to the USB flash drive but still get that error. Any ideas how to procedd?

Pandasaurus19 you are wrong, sir. Holding down on volume and then power with flash plugged in is how to boot from drive.

My Surface does not accept the connected USB drive as boot device, although there is a bootable Windows 10 and a Windows 8.0 recovery system on it. The USB drives LED flashes, signaling activity, but it still boots into an error message saying that windows installation isn't complete and has to restart.
Microsoft has no intention in helping.

I have the Surface Pro 3 with Windows 8.1 Pro. (I7. 512 GB, 64 Bit, 8.00 GB Ram).
Been having issues that I can't seem to fix and would like to restore but the idea of downloading all my software again is less than appealing. Is there any possible way to save software download files and transfer back to my system in working condition once the restore is complete? Or is there a way to at least save the activation codes so I won't have to contact the manufacturer for a new code? HELP!

And also if you messed your surface up a little bit and you can't reformat it over the surface Settings > Recovery (i think it is)

i followed all your steps from previous video, but when i held Volume down + power (rlease power, and keep holding volume down) the surface would boot normally. Its like my USB never exsisted. But when i plug in my micro SD card, there would be a boot error. Do you know anything to help me on this issue?! I have a 64gb version and 8gb of extra space is really precious!

I have everything I need. Including the Bootable flash drive that I downloaded from Microsoft's website for my Surface Pro 2. Although I managed to accidentally cleaned what I think was Drive C, the drive that had the Operating System on. Following the steps to boot from the flash drive carefully... I had to hold Volume Down and Power, same steps that you completed in the video. But my USB Drive is not booting. I receive an endless loop between the UEIFI menu ( If that's how you spell it ) and the Surface Logo with no OS to boot from. Any Solutions to get the USB to boot?

Hi I have Surface Pro 3 I was trying Restore from USB recovery drive but it doesn't work for me. When I press volume down button and Shut-down button its directly goes to windows.
But I can go to boot....Its has only two option 1)SSD only 2)Network-USB-SSD. I tried on both option still doesnt work

My process was set to make a clena install, and it never passes 2%. After around 2 or three hours it just return to a blue screen and says thre was an error rtesetting the device. I reviewed in console that there is no partitions at this moment. Was it the end of the tablet? it is a surface pro

I'm doing this in 2019 (bought my Win 8.1 Surface Pro-2 in Nov 2013) because my Win8.1 is now sorta acting up. I had a Windows 8.1 update from March 17, 2019 that caused me problems. I had to roll back from this last update because I'd get BSODs upon startup (first I had "DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" BSOD, then had a "BAD_POOL_HEADER" BSOD, then a "HTTP_DRIVER_CORRUPTED (http.sys)" BSOD..... So I disconnected internet completely, which for some reason letted me reboot normally after 2-3 tries and then I backed up all my files on a seperate HDs. Then rolled back to Feb updates which had not caused problems. Desabled win auto updates. Reconnected internet. And rebooted. It solved it. BUT It's been way too long since I did a fresh clean install on my Surface Pro2. Actually I never even did one!!!! Now, if I do a clean install from the newly made USB key I made today, will my clean install be flawed with conflicted patched over patched Windows updates like my current Win8.1 installed and almost-fully-updated version ??? I have 5 years of cumulated Win updates. Or will I have it exactly as I had the Pro2 the first day I opened it out of the box back in late 2013 ????

Mine won't boot recovery mode. My USB is 16GB and formatted to FAT32, I have the correct files as per serial number from the MS website. I carefully follow the press volume down and power and only release volume down once the Surface splash screen appears for a few seconds. It just will not boot... I even leave it for 20 minutes and nothing, I dont even think it attempts to read the USB.
+Ant Man I have exactly the same problem. I tried with different USB drives, and different images, even with a disk image created with a working Surface... But is just not reading from the usb drive, I know that because one of the drives has a LED indicator, and it doesn't show any activity. Will continue digging, if i get it to work will let you know
Some people have had success after opening and reseating the battery. Regardless of it being within warranty or not, MS update fucked it and they should be liable to fix it.

FORMAT OF USB? FAT32 or NTFS?
Fat32. NTFS isn't really used on memory sticks unless you need to transfer large files
