- How to paint new drywall or plasterboard. The quickest way to paint new plasterboard or drywall is to use an airless sprayer. There is a technique in doing this and I will show you how to do it in this video and explain how you can spray paint the walls and ceiling. Plasterboard is also known as gyprock.

Thanks, it's good to be back uploading videos again. The reason for doing walls first is basically because of the cornice or molding, it's easier to spray it when doing walls. Also if it was done first there would be more chance of getting runs under the cornice or molding when spraying the walls (the over lap). I hope that explains why.

Walls first to prevent dust and ovwrspray build up on walls especially on joints.
Backrolling would leave such a better finish and no messing around wasting time spraying ur joints first. Nice spray technique and one of the few who know to prime walls b4 ceiling especially on flat walls.
Both ways have there down sides and not sure how much time difference there would be overall. The thing with spraying is that its one less coat of orange peel so it can help a little for a smoother final coat.

There's so many ways to paint new construction houses. I back roll when I spray and I only spray ceilings and trim. We brush and roll all of our walls because it's a better finish.

so correct me if I'm wrong, just trying to get the order of things, so you prime then cover the joins, the first coat of paint air gun, second coat using roller? should it be bone dry before second coat? how many coats are needed? is it cheaper to diy or hire someone?
Yes you prime joints first if you are going to spray first coat, You cant also spray second coat on walls but final coat should be rolled, Each coat needs to be dry before you apply another coat. Labour costs can be high so DIY can be cheaper.

Ive never painted a level 4 b4 without texturing or skim coating to level 5. Hows that work out in the light. Or did i miss something

If its a low sheen acrylic then no need for undercoat, if it was an oil based paint then it would need a good sand and undercoat..

So you "prime" plasterboard with ceiling emulsion watered down by 20% water (1 to 4 ratio in 5) ?
No, I'm using an acrylic primer/sealer for walls and ceilings. I don't think I would ever go past about 10% water but it really depends on how thick the paint is.

Hi mate . I get why new plaster is mist coated but can you explain the reason raw plasterboard is ? I always thought this could make the paper soggy ? Thanks again.
There really is only so much paint you can apply before it will run or have very heavy roller stipple, so there is no way you could get the plaster board too wet.

I kept reading it was not possible to paint direct onto the drywall/gypsum. What paint can be used for the drywall??
You can paint direct onto drywall but it is best to use a sealer/primer first. The idea of the sealer is so you can sand easier and it will seal the drywall so the top coats won't soak in as much and leave you with a better finish.

Drywall need primer before use finish paint?
New drywall does, if it has already been painted with a matt or low gloss paint then primer is not necessary. I have known project builders that apply finish coat to new drywall without priming, not the best thing to do.

With the spray gun I know it's fast but how much more paint would u use compared to a roller!!! ? Tks
that is a good point because you do use more paint, hard to say exact but around 10 to 20% more paint.

Here in Australia I have never seen anyone skim plaster board. I can't see how it can help that much, when you paint the walls the texture of the rolling will show out therefore you haven't got a completely smooth surface anymore. Most imperfections in plaster board can be filled very easily and a whole house might only take a few hours to fill the bad area's.

Yes, it's all about the paint you have just applied, not the old paint.
so in this video..yopu are priming obviously..so you spray but don't backroll...what about inperfections ect..do you sand after its sprayed, then apply final coat which you then backroll? @@@howtopaintinfo

Let me guess: it was NOT the cheap stuff
that rubberized PV. You didn't mention the brand or the type. One thing I was always careful about was to always use sandable primer on wallboard in case any imperfections had to be sanded down
the rubber PV stuff is impossible to sand.
I used oil base primer on one job but I had to wear a mask. How in hell can you spray a ceiling with no overspray?? I've never found a paint that can do that.

A backroll to eliminate hat-banding would be nice
You will find there can be little or no hat-banding/picture framing if you take care in what you do. Also it's only the sealer coat so it's not so important but final coats should always be rolled.

At the last corner there is one place that has no reflection because
it isn't covered 100% with wet paint: fail.

DIY'er here: Why would anyone roller walls and ceilings if spraying is an option? It seems to be way, way, way less effort..
years of painting new construction has taught to prime the walls, sand lightly after they dry and then spray and back roll the finish coat. As far as the ceiling goes I spray one heavy coat of finish paint and let that be it. The dry wall contractor always glazed the ceiling with super thin down joint compound.
Because a spray finish can not be touch up very easy, any touch ups will stand out that's why ceilings and walls are rolled, roller finish is easier to touch up.

if you seal the house you dont need to paint the joins as you put 2 more coats of low sheen on top of the sealer..
back rolling in AUS standard on all coats you should know that
Its well known that you should roll flushing joints first because of the dust issue and spraying doesn't stick to dust but by rolling the joint you are working the paint in. Also it is common practice to spray first coats and only back roll final coats if I hadn't sealer the joints first then i would have back rolled the sealer.
