    Most people who work learn time management skills to get their job done. It’s kind of the same principle when you start working for yourself at home(canning, gardening, herbs…). I work harder now than I did when I was an admin assistant for a vp of a major food service chain. It pays less in money but the rewards are priceless! You were my inspiration to get started and I really think God led me to find you. Shalom my friend!

    Oh, gosh yes to the baby steps!! I'm so guilty of biting off more than I can chew with different things then having to spit some out because I just can't. It can be a hard lesson but once you learn it...well no haha I still overwhelm myself at times!
    And AMEN to time management!! I remember one lady getting her panties in a wad because people would ask her how she does 5 billion things in a day and gets it all done. In a shrill voice she shrieked, "I get up earlier!" Then laughed as if it was the stupidest question to ever be asked.
    I think this is a disingenuous answer, as many people already do get up quite early. We all get 24 hours in a day but we all have different things to do, different tasks that require various time commitments, and different priorities. We all have various amounts of assistance (including none), we all have different physical abilities that may help or hinder us, and we all have other differences I've not mentioned because I think anyone reading this gets what I'm trying to say. Time management is more important than simply having more time. It's a skill, like any other, that takes time (haha) and practice to improve upon. Many need to be taught this skill, as it is not innate for some individuals. Thank you for talking about it.

    Time management - I certainly learned that right down to the minute back when I was 40, and decided to go back to school. I had two jobs, one 'real' one, and one work/study. I didn't watch tv for about six years. Now things are easier, and here on my farm I start my day with the NOAA weather report and my paper calendar to see if there is a webinar or zoom on my schedule (learning things every day). In really hot weather, I get the most necessary things done outside first. I water inside my hoop house every day - no rain inside there! My animal chores come first, too. Things like vacuuming wait until it's rainy or too hot. Winter is a different story. Learn to prioritize. If I've been working hard outside and need to sit down, that is when I can learn about herbs. I grew up with people who gardened and canned, and a couple years ago, I added to that with learning about sweet potatoes. They are not better quality than ones I can buy in the store, but I put in four plants this year just to keep up the process of starting slips. One sweet potato with about six slips - I planted the whole thing instead of letting the slips root in water. Experimenting while times are good. Like Heidi, I do not, and haven't for years, go to movies, out to eat, or on a vacation. I've actually never gone on an actual vacation, and I don't really want to. My vacation is my farm and my animals, my little haven. A perfect day is not having to go to an appointment or into town for something.

    Thank you for putting things into perspective. It does get overwhelming because every medicinal plant has SO MANY uses.
    Lately, I've been letting "weeds" grow and identify them before getting rid of moving them. I have learned a lot by doing this.
    I have the brake bleeder in my car but saved it for later because I'm not sure how to use it.

    Heidi, thank you for this encouraging video, it is true, that those learning things later into the game, feel like we have to do as much as possible, as soon as possible. Yet, there is so much to learn and that is completely unrealistic. Makes me wonder if you are always so calm, but maybe you have learned balance and how not to be distracted by things that waste time. God bless you.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 дня назад +2

      Always calm? Most certainly not! I certainly have my days where I allow myself to feel overwhelmed, especially when I have all three grandbabies and they are all grumpy or in need of attention and I am trying to get my video editing done. I have to remind myself I am ahead on my videos for just such reasons and they are more important than being that far ahead and just enjoy them

    We've not had t.v. since 2012, only got a subscription from a company for internet 6 months ago. The only reason I gave in to paying extra for that is to watch and learn from utube. I had only 1 bar on my cell to watch people like you on utube videos, from where we live remotely in the mtns. I had watched your channel for years but only when I had a good signal. I have never wasted time with facebook, but I have seen some of other people on there and decided it's waste of my time.

    I have been doing this in baby steps. I have my homestead going and I have 3 chickens…but although I love my chickens, when they finish out their lives, I don’t think I will be replacing them! It’s a lot of work for the eggs I get and I think I would rather just buy eggs from someone else than raising my own. I would rather be able to travel more and spend more time on my garden and other things…like sewing or something.

    Each year I try to learn how to seed save 1-2 more plants. At first it was just squash or tomato seeds but I've worked up to quite a few. This year I'm learning how to seed save carrots (who knew they'd grow to over 6 feet tall?). I like to infuse oils with herbs but the jars end up sitting for 6 months until I have down time to make a lotion. I'm okay with it. I think the best advise it to be curious, ask 'what if I...." or "what happens when..." or "how do I..." If you have just a couple of hours a week, take 5-10 min throughout the week leading up to those hours and read a couple things, get ingredients and when the day comes have fun. It's okay if it fails, what did you learn? If your jelly failed, well now you have pancake and icecream syrup. Find the win.
