Combined with age and drinking and exertion, his voice deepened with a bit more rasp. Although I would note that his vocal capabilities during the WorldWired tour sounded much healthier than other performances from the 2000's.

What's nuts to me is that during the album recording and tour...James wasn't even 30 yet!!! I'm 33 and hell. I can't even trim my toe nails without cringing. But here this guy is already having the best metal album under his belt and recording the best selling metal album! Damn
Wow! The difference between those 2 takes, just from that little bit of coaching from Bob Rock and Hetfield finding his groove, that was fucking IMPRESSIVE!!! No wonder so many of the songs they did together are masterpieces!
I love how Lars is talking about using different sounds on this album and they show him using a cowbell, then a tambourine, then all of the sudden James is loading a shotgun into the microphone. haha
His voice on here sounds great without adding anything compared to the edited version. Also even Metallica had "the couch" that we all had back in the day .. @ 7:08 😂

Mann you know how bad I wish we had this documentation for their previous 4 albums before their Black Album it sucks there's really no footage at all of the band recording at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark to record Ride The Lightning & Master Of Puppets or even any footage of them back in 88' at One On One Studios in L.A. recording ...And Justice For All I'd love to have seen any footage of any of the making of those albums.....or somebody should really put out a true in-depth documentary video/movie that really goes into detail of their early days in Metallica and if they don't really have no footage of them from back then other than the live audio recordings or videos of them live performing they could atleast show like collages of pictures and have friends band members other bands whose toured with them or is close with them talk about what they remember when hanging with the guys from Metallica!! That needs to happened!!
