The poor man's car shouldn't be almost €50k.
I hope these come down a bit for the used market. I have a 2020 model as a company lease and I could see myself buying one after.
The peoples EV implies the masses not the poor but yes the price is far beyond mass market. The used ones will be a premium until new EVs are sold at similar prices to ICE models
Lease one, leasing prices are down 30% comparing to February in germany
@@binflydushy Leasing works out more expensive. Good for people that don't have the money but can afford it
Thanks Bjørn. Despite some flaws and shortcomings, the ID.3 is still a great car. I love my 2021 ID.3, the best car I ever owned. It drives great, has amazing matrix lights and the assistant systems are also really good, specially the travel assist. 😊
Yes, ID.3 a bit underrated for what it really is. Love it so much!
Ev for the people?
I have one. Its really not. At least it never stopped but it does brake in curves, it confuses roadsignes so it phantom brakes on 120-70 often. Infotainment system is shiiiiiiiiiiieeeet. It fogs as you saw. The app is often slow and does not connect to the car. If you think there is something wrong with the car? No, they checked it out.
In sweden it costs over 500k….
Tesla and EX30 are gonne make this shiiiiiiet go away I think anyway in Sweden.
I wound not recommend VW ev to anyone and wont buy new one for at least 10 years until they catch up if they ever do.
In Italy this model has the same price of the Tesla Model 3 SR! Why would you buy it?!
ID.3 if you want a real car.
Traded in my model 3 for an ID3. No regrets.
Pros: No more shoddy build quality, software (3.2) is fine, better radar and lane assitsnce (no phantom braking anymore for shadows, non jerky lane assist). Easier and better in cabin controls (yes the much maligned haptic buttons are still better the no buttons in tesla). Ride is nicer, better sitting position and seats.
Cons: slower ui, no towing, more hard plastics
Regarding the coasting test. The ID.3 will actually use the brakes to hold set speed a shirt while if you switch to neutral from cruise control. You have to disable cruise control and then switch to neutral, I've experienced it many times when I coast with my ID.3
So you weigh the car fully charged?! That adds another 2.3E-9 Kg according to Einstein 😉
I always think charged batteries weigh more 😄 I can feel it
Especially with that Premium Ionity juice!
But less weight in your wallet.....
Don’t forget his lunch box!
German here. Can confirm, we don't have rain anymore. Only Gewitter, ja! 😁
Thank you for the detailed testing - I don't see any larger upgrade for the ID3 to increase the efficiency - it basically delivers the same numbers, so they did not do anything to optimize the drive train (Looking at you Volvo) which now only will come with the next gen - or they will do something sooner. The ID3 was a "first" for VW - and it's getting less competitive against the others. The refresh looks only cosmetic for me. The largest improvement is the software 3.5 looks much better and is really useable.
I recently received my ID.4 and the 3.5 software version my ID.4 got delivered with hasn’t bothered me once. So I have to agree with you, the new software must be a huge deal considering how often reviewers have complained about it in the past. Are there work remaining on the software, certainly. From my understanding the navigation doesn’t take aviation into account, it seemed a little optimistic on my day trip test. But no issues otherwise.
@@JanHenrik541 good to hear Jan! I hope then you can enjoy your ID4 :)
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 thank you. I have zero regrets about the purchase, loving it so far.
Polestar 2 has a facelift with what seems to be increased efficiency and technology. Some people testing it have reported quite dramatically lower consumption. It's also rear-wheel drive now and has better charging max (from 150 to 205kW). Don't know about the charging curve yet, I am patiently waiting for Björn to test the MY2024 Polestar 2. Preferably the long range single motor one.
Do you do video in thai?
Price of ID 3 pro in Austria 48,637 €. Tesla Y RWD 44,800 €. Who whould spend 3,800 € more for a so much smaller car?
I still think this car is too expensive. Top spec with everthing included should be 350-400k NOK at max.
Wish these were in America 😢, would be a great upgrade from the bolt!
I must say, I like the red and black color combo.
Thanks for the re-test.
It sounds really funny when you call it "a poor man's car" while over here in Germany, many complain that VW has become way to expensive and is only for rich people :-). Overall, I like the changes they did to the interior, but exterior, it looks more boring than before the facelift.
To be fair, there never been a poor mans car. Always been a premium product. Other makers were always cheaper than VW
@@sargfowler9603 Thats just wrong. VW was a company that produced for the people not the high standards. That changed with EVs for sure.
Björn nennt die Grundversion immer Poor Mans…😂 war auch schon beim i4 so
@@tanyodachi170 Both are you are not really right and not really wrong.
If you look at the European market and compare a random VW with the corresponding Opel, Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, Fiat, Nissan, or Mazda Model, the VW is always the most expensive. Not by a huge margin, but still consistent.
That was true in the 80s, 90s and 00s and 10s , long before EVs.
VW was always positioned at the transition from premium to non-premium. Calling VW premium is wrong imo, but they are the most expensive out of all non-premium makers.
Of course the early history of VW with the Beetle, it was clearly a budget brand, but VW has been upper-midrange for decades!
@@tzarcoal1018 VW was/tried to be the cheapest German Car maker.
Old school. Respect for understanding what you hear. No one analyzes music these days: sounds, tones, clipping, mids, base etc... Concepts forgotten from another era 😂. Back in the day people really appreciated quality sounds... Remember the "stereo" led? You wanted that to light up. People were happy to see it light up. Now... Most want just to hit play... No one cares about mids, highs etc...
Volvo EX30 is a way better choice..Nearly same price. 22kw AC option is a gamechanger, and don’t forget you will have Google software.
Seems to be a lot small rear seat and trunk in the EX30 though. Also would expect worse consumption and drive thanks to the SUV shape.
Björn you really made me laugh when you said that the ID3 is a poor people car.
What is your idea of how much money poor people in Germany have at their disposal?
Either poor people in Germany can't afford a car at all or a 20-year-old fossil car..
Its honestly not a good car. Idk what they are doing but it cannot compare to model 3 which cost similar money
@@nocapproductions5471Have you driven both? I have, and vastly prefer how VW’s products drive and feel to what Tesla offers. We bought our Cupra Born after test driving both the Model 3 and Ioniq 5. The Teslas are FAST and amazingly efficient (and we all love that), but fit and finish, ride, phantom braking through lack of radar and missing parking sensors were all major cons of the Tesla… as is the knowledge that they rust like hell on our over salted Danish winter roads. I really hope that the Model Highland will reintroduce radar and parking sensors.
ID3 great, but needs to be affordable.
Thanks Bjørn for your dedicated testing. It is good to know how the refreshed ID.3 actually performs, compared to company claims. It is too bad they didn't provide 18" tires. Maybe someday automakers will learn to provide the best specification for your tests, instead of typical ICE journalist testing for handling and speed.
VW upgrade the cheap interior only, hardware is the same and the rest will be OTA-Update
The tech update is the new 210 kW engine and inverter in ID.7, Ford Explorer and soon Enyaq. Next step will be the standard battery cell for the whole Volkswagen Group in 2025.
LOL.
For the price demanded is not for anyone.
Real fair price is 25.000 euro, if i can buy a tesla 3 at 40.000 eur
Model 3 is not a better car.
Basic model is still over €40k after grant here in Ireland. Too expensive for the “poor man”. Until manufacturers get the prices between €20-€30k, electric cars will not outsell ICE cars
But they outsell ice cars in Norway, i know different market but price not only factor. ICE cars may be taxed off the roads in future. Youve also got the big Chinese manufacturers coming to market with much lower labour costs and all focusing on Electric cars, making it difficult for VW to compete in this market, so are positioning at the Premium end of the market, which several manufacturers in Europe has said will be their focus. Also some markets will soon be banning the sale ICE cars well ahead of any European Union rules .
@@itsfahys Norway is filthy rich
Cost in Use. Model 3 is cheaper than Corolla within 5 years in US. Southern California is less than Corolla sticker price. Model Y already outsells any other models worldwide. Fleets are choosing BEVs - tesla half the price to run in Hertz fleet and last way longer than the 2 years typical fleet life.
@@itsfahys taxing ICE cars more does not solve the problem, all that does is cause more hardship for people who cannot afford an electric car. Yes in time prices may come down because of Chinese imports, but of course that causes other problems in regard to domestic European car manufacturing, jobs etc. Creative solutions are needed across the board, and as of yet that is lacking
@@waynerussell6401 what grants and infrastructure has California got? Electric charging network is woeful here in Ireland, and with the fact that electricity network would not be able to handle the burden of electric cars needed. Not to mention the rise in the cost of electricity here (most expensive in the EU), and that a Tesla 3 costs €43k new for basic model after incentives. My point being that taxing ICE cars, and fossil fuels does not solve the problem without government doing its part. People are suffering, and adding more expense will not bring them on side
Thanks Björn, great video as always👍🏻 Tomorrow we have more then negative 70 öre/kWh between 14-15 here in Sweden. You are welcome to charge if you like.😉 Keep up the good work😊
We have -85 øre/kWh in Norway.
Haha, ok, happy charging😉👍🏻
i wish vw would release id 3 in the USA
Isn't that maddening how markets seem to justify themselves ? No ID.3 in US, only ID.4 and LWB BUZZ, there's a Maverick Hybrid almost 2 decades after the Escape hybrid, but Toyota never bothered with a hybrid pickup before.
No small cars to think of, not even in Europe anymore, they're disappearing. All because executives and market analysts say customers want more because their competitors say they do too - when in reality that's all that's on offer and advertised , because profit margins
@@geraldh.8047 ah i like a compact ev design
@@toyotaprius79 yeah ex 30 i think is going to shake up the market i don't have a family i drive a mach e awd premium it's a nice car but its meant for people who have children and are married
@@geraldh.8047 yep 👍
The software changed place. Now you have a "ID software" button in the menu, the settings now only shows hardware info. That must be software 3.5
It's interesting that newer EVs in general test similar, but slightly worse than their 2-3 year old counterparts, despite a hefty price increase of £30k to £37k for the cheapest model (£42k for the 200 mile motorway range). Considering they've permanently closed some EV factories and fired a bunch of people, you'd thing their reduced costs would be passed down to the consumer.
Tesla excepted, every EV out there is for compliance only. And that is why Tesla, NIO and Apple will own the market a few years from now.
@@GudieveNing Cool story, bro
@@GudieveNing You're right, Tesla is way worse. They've created a battery chemistry called LFP with no cobalt that has 30-50% less energy density, takes 2 hours to charge in the winter, range is a lot more dependant on ambient temperature, etc. So if everyone is testing slightly worse, Tesla is testing 30-50% worse than a few years ago.
The energy density is so much worse on the new Tesla batteries, they can only use it on the standard range model as it would make the long range model too heavy to be road legal.
The best Car😍
3:20 a couple of nice jokes here ;-)
ID.3 for a price of BYD Tang is not a great deal, unfortunately
i wish VW would release the ID 3 in Australia, like now, not in years time.
Even if VW shipped some ID.3s to Australia right now, is it gonna be able to compete with the MG4?
Can get sister car Cupra Born right now
The Cupra Born is his twist brother.
Is it true that the base model of this car sells in China for $16,500 and in Germany for $36,000, the difference being the cost of manufacturing it, due to labor costs?
some also speculate that VW is operating at loss in China with some models atm.
@@tzarcoal1018 As of this year, it is no longer speculation. As far as I know right now, Tesla is the only non-Chinese car company which is not suffering significant losses.
According to the official website of SAIC Volkswagen during the month of July they are selling a limited amount of up to 7000 ID.3 cars for a special price. For the base model of the ID.3 that is ¥125,888, which currently equals about US$ 17,500.
The regular price of the base model ID.3 is ¥162,888.
I don't know if, or how much, additional taxes or fees will have to be paid to get an electric vehicle on the road in China.
if this car in EU can has only 1.5x of Chinese market price (~15k Euor), then it's a perfect people's car. But at 40k Euro, sorry it's not.
Love your vids Bjorn! I'd also love to have my morning coffee in a mug saying "Awh, Shiiiiiit" 😂 You sell any merch? 😅
Apart from driving great, it's not that good for the money.
Still so expensive... BYD Dolphing for the win.
Thanks for this ID.3 range test. All the best Bjorn
VW should have brought this vehicle to America. Be surprised not everyone here is an overweight fast food eater…….
Think the ecocontact are contributing to the consumption. In my Cupra Born 58 kwh with Bridgestone Turanza eco i get 13.2 kwh/100km at 80-90 km/h and 15.0 kwh/100km at 110 km/h in 18-20c degrees weather without rain.
What's your opinion on the ID.2?
It won't happen. Small aways unprofitable. Only make money on repairs and parts which may apply to VW ICE but less to BEVs.
03:59 horsepower hour per hour 🤣
Bossa Nova Bjorn 😁
Horse power per horse 😂 bhp/h
60KG? Did you forget the body in the boot Bjorn?😊
can‘t wait to have that look at Mjösen myself, will it still be with the Ioniq or ….??
Whatever car, consumtionwise it will be a disappointment
Waiting for 1000 km Test😁
I drove Toyota and Honda, but when I become vw golf for driving it's so comfortable to drive on Autobahn. It's so different driving. But because reliability I must drive Japanese cars.
Unfortunately thy didn’t change their scheeety software
Works just fine.
if this car was for the people, they would be here in america selling them. I'm tired of seeing nothing but trucks and large suv that can cover up the state of Rhode Island like if that's the only cars that are available. to me they're not even cars. I would get a id3 if they came and so would millions of others.
There is no good looking ID car … come on!
Will test the pre facelift on my vacation in September. Middle of Germany to Bodo in "Nomansland". Thanks for your inspiring trips and testing. Helps a lot.

From an e-golf owner the ID3 is a butt ugly car.

Sadly the APP550 drivetrain isn't build in. 🙁
Hmm strange results really... Or some strange changes to the vehicle from the original version
"It's so quiet here" with a loud tire noise 😂😂😂😂
Good car but too expensive for it’s class
Good car but too expensive for it’s class
VW really needs to remake the styling, it's the biggest barrier in the USA, people do not like the new look of the ID series.
Like everything from VW, this is 10 years behind, the tech is terrible, and the innovation is non existent, I just cannot understand why anybody would buy this garbage.
VW has a demand problem for their EVs actually.
@@manni1998 Having owned, 6 vehicles from VW, previously i can attest to all the shortcomings, and I will never own one again, I wonder why people are lining up, to purcharse such an inferior product.

where im from the ID3 costs as much as a Tesla Model 3. But i wonder if its just as good? Or better?
Almost worse in every category. It has hatch opening, that's better and slightly quiter ride... Everything else is worse
@@DG-uv3zwWell it depends what you prefer. For some people a more compact car is a big plus. As well some might celebrate matrix lights and parking sensors and ACC w/o phantom breaking.

Merely a limit of current technology. Batteries are heavy. We need EV adoption for research & development dollars to be spent on figuring out how to make it better. Can't just come out of the blue with something perfect from the start.
@@tobias_dahlberg sorry but the "this is the start" excuse just isn't good enough. The whole EV thing has been underway for many years now.
