The Matchbox 73B F1 Ferrari replicates the Ferrari 156 Formula One racing car that was used by the Scuderia between 1961 and 1964. More commonly known as the "Sharknose" due to its distinctive air intakes, the 156 would take Phil Hill to the Drivers Championship and earn Ferrari the Constructors Championship during its first year. Unfortunately, it came at the cost of team leader Wolfgang von Trips' life as he was killed at the Italian Grand Prix; the race where Hill and Ferrari would seal the Championships.
The 73B entered the Matchbox series in 1962, replacing the 10 Ton Pressure Refueller. It remained completely unchanged during its six year production run and was eventually replaced in 1968 by the 73C Mercury.
My casting was in a very poor state, missing a wheel, all of its paint and decals, its driver, and its steering wheel. As the wheels aren't yet reproduced, I needed a donor model. I managed to make two complete castings using two models in varying states of decay.

Great restorations. I did 3 customs of this model, making them resemble the actual F1 cars, including the yellow #8. On one of the models my wire wheels were broken so I replaced them with ones from the BRM and attached styrene tubes to the backs for proper spacing. I completed them by painting the result silver.

Very satisfying results. There is something rather special about this era of Lesney Matchbox Models. ❤

The Ferrari and Lotus were my favorites. The model looks great and I like the red as it is a good match to the original color. The footage of these cars racing was fantastic to watch too. Thanks for sharing this.

They are a super little model. Great work on these presentations. I am doing one of these myself at the moment, but i have done a few things differently which may be of interest. I removed the tyres by making them more flexible with hot water then scrubbed the wire hubs with a brass brush and then clear laquered them to prevent oxydation in the future, it gives a pretty good effect. Also I needed a repro exhaust which is poorer quality than the original so i primed it and molotowed it, and I really like the effect that this has had. Finally I tend to use Humbrol enamels because they are what I grew up with so its going to be painted in their 220 red. Nothing wrong with other paints which I do use, its just my thing....a bit like your molotowed hubs.

Turned out super nice Jason. Love the history that accompanies the restorations!

Looking beautiful Jason. There is so much detail in the raw metal model that it would look fantastic even unpainted. The mesh air intakes directly behind the driver would be nice if highlighted with nuln oil to bring out the detail of rhe mesh I think.

Lovely model! Along with the Matchbox Lotus, BRM and Aston Martin you can make yourself an early 1960's Grand Prix Grid. I've restored a few of each of these, but putting different numbers on them and painting the drivers, including a couple of cars I had as a child.
Incidentally, I believe none of the original full-size Ferrari 156's have survived, though there are a few replicas.

That’s right. I saw a video recently where Phil Hill was introduced to a replica at Goodwood that Chris Rea was involved in building. Well worth a watch

Great work, bad break with the decals. Hot Wheels had this model in their lineup in the early 2000’s sans driver.
