To push back a bit on her friend's "don't rewrite the narrative because then you'll know what'll happen, and that won't be interesting" take... If a character is consistently written, you can make reasonable guesses as to what they're likely to do. Like, say someone read LotR and thought "man, I really liked Boromir. What would happen if he didn't die of pincushioning?" The resulting narrative, if you let it play out from there instead of having to write it yourself - which is what the first three minutes would imply as our mechanics - would be fascinating. And take the "write out that toxic friendship" idea, that would cause a ripple effect in that blorbo's character development. Viewing the narrative fallout, especially if you wanted to see what else still needed changing, would also be interesting to observe. Vacuums tend to fill with SOMETHING, or try to, so what events would take the place of that whole friendship? A new hobby, different relationship...?
I wish my eldrich being would rewrite me with some more self confidence. Maybe that way my depression arc (which feels like it's been going on for a decade) will speed up.
