That's great Katlego, as a senior software engineer/architect working in one of SA's top companies I would like to encourage you to continue with your hard work and make the necessary sacrifices to keep on reaching your goals, especially when you are still young. I leave you with the following advice; work hard, be kind to others, be respectful, be a team player, and know what you're worth, your company did you a favour and paid you what they thought you were worth, the next company won't. Do your homework and make sure you know what the market-related salary for your experience and skills is, always ask for more than the market-related salary and/or what you feel you deserve (realistically of course). Good luck! Your fellow South African.
Thanks for the useful advice Kratos!!
Great advice!
Spoken like a true God Of War ⚔
This great Kratos I also on codemey
I am self taught with no degree. For those of you who think you need a degree in south africa to get a high paying job… think again. I am now a technical lead at a very well renowned global company earning a 6 figure salary. RUclips, Blogs and practicing can land you a junior position in under a year if you are dedicated. Good luck!
How did you do it
I developed my own projects in Java, html, css and JavaScript. From there learnt about AWS and got my first job. Once I got my first job, I built my experience with different technologies like docker, kubernetes and serverless. This enabled me to work in any environment and get a ton of job offers.
@@jasontruter7239I starting next on udemy
@jasontruter did you also do projects relating to AWS?
This helps, thanks! 🎉@@jasontruter7239
My son is 15.. he is teaching himself and he is pretty good. I'm supporting him
Love hearing about self taught developers such a confidence booster
Hey Katlego. I think you can be very proud. That's an excellent salary especially for a self taught developer. I think this goes to show that you don't necessarily need a university degree to succeed in software dev, just passion!
Passion works. Some form of formal training is also a necessity coz there's a lot that you get exposed to through formal education that most programming tutorials do not cover. I learned the hard way in one interview when asked to comment on the "software architectural approach" that was implemented in my previous place of employment. Being an electronic engineer by qualification (and a self-taught software engineer) I had no idea coz all I knew was hardware architecture. I, thereafter, decided to enroll for a BSc applied maths and computer science degree - and God did I know learn so much! The journey has been very rewarding.
I am now employed as a senior software engineer. NB. C++ still kicks my butt ever after more than 10 years of intense coding. I'm a Java/Python/Matlab/JavaScript/C# programmer at heart - maybe that's my Archilles heel.
As a final year student waiting for his last marks I found this video actually helpful. I am studying BscIT and currently busy applying for jobs. It's great to see a developer without a degree that makes it in life in the current state of our country. Thanks for this info, you got a new subscriber.
BRO!!!!! 35K - 45K, that's a huge step up
That Company has done you a huge favour in the long term, only going up from here
Congrats to You Man!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks man!
True
I get why you took the 7k, cause it is really hard to find a job as a junior developer - every one wants experience. I recently got my first job as a developer after 2 months of a trial and I was so happy that some company decided to give me a chance I didn't even argue with the pay and when I realized the scale of the tasks I had - the contract was already signed, but I am glad you are earning so much now, keep pushing
I hope you can get out of that soon, and start earning what you're worth, brother!
The low numbers are just a start, especially if you dont have many people to vouch for your skills but hard work and perseverance you will get out of it
Nice dude! So happy for you. I have a feeling that you are going to go far! Keep up the hard work, it pays off!
Keep Pushing Content my guy, we're fully behind you
Just discovered your channel now. Good job KG, I am a self taught developer and I always worked for myself, only started working for another company last year. A huge learning curve but I am enjoying it.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 awesome bro, keep up the great work this is inspirational for all developers proving that all that matters is skills and the ability to learn. Keep growing keep pushing and don't stop being transparent on your platforms all the best on your journey.
Im proud of you champ , and im also on my Journey to becoming a software developer
Wow, Katlego! This is amazing, thank you for sharing and being transparent. This will help a lot of people- myself included ✨
That's great, I love the fact that the company you currently work for gave you a higher than expected salary. Some firms do take advantage of potential employees who are not aware of how much a particular job that they are applying for generally pays. Information on payscales is still very difficult to find especially for private sector business.
Congrats my man! Good on you! Also a dev, you are still gonna get even more!
inspiring stuff, well done bro!!!
Woooow that's a fair amount. Patience and hard work paid. Thanks for the content
Awesome, keep up the pace. Good for you 👍 👏
Foot in the door is key...then everything is up to you.The money comes with improving and learning
Congrats fam... Thanks for the video uploads🎉🎉
God is blessingyou KB... Keep pushing there's no stoping you, many people wish to be like you, like myself but God gives us different gifts and I can say today I'm free
I'm happy for you bro🎉🎉🎉🎉
Some time ago for my first job I got R8k as a Junior Dev and 4 months later I had gotten another job as a Dev paying me R23k+. I was still getting into the industry.
In tech, if you ensure your technical competency, it'll be worth it so long as you keep on learning and bettering youself as a professional.
Bro you were self-taught too?
Well said Sandile!
True..the money comes with proving yourself and consistently learning
@@ThapeloMohapi-wu9su I did a 6 month bootcamp bro. I didn't get the job because of the bootcamp though, I got the job due to projects I did.

Thats really great man, I hope more good things come your way
Thank you Jayson!!!
Happy for you bro. 🎉
You inspire me so much ❤
Congratulations man ❤
Keep them coming my gee
I started with 4K, not screen resolution - in rands. But over years shot up. But an employer giving you salary above bracket you proposed. That’s awesome.
🤣"4 thousand rands" is actually shorter than "4K - not in screen resolution - in rands". I guess the tech guru in you took over!
Here cause I need a career change! And this is encouraging, great job.
You are not alone😉
Congratulations bro!!!
Danko Kat, you got a sub 👏🤝
Thank you for sharing , this is very inspiring. You've definitely earned a subscription from me
Dude am proud big up, i wish you a more healthy life
Well Done bro👊🏾👊🏾
that smile at the end of the video says it all😂😂. Let's goo🔥🔥🔥
Shout out! Get that bag.
Man I'm trying to learn software developing myself, how did you go about it man
My guy!🙌🏽🔥
Daaaaamn🔥🔥💪
Cool stuff man.
That's great .. I am trying to get my foot in the door any advice you have on what projects I should do to stand out more.
Your feedback will be much appreciate
Love it for you my brother

Nice! love it1
Big up bro ..!!
I've subscribed!
Thank you very much my guy
Hi bro, thanks for sharing. God bless
inspired 🙌
Wow! That is awesome, Katlego! Thanks for sharing.
I think you also did well to give a background of your role - from design to deployment. Also how you accepted the low-paying position as an opportunity to get your foot in the door. I'm glad it paid off!
For how long were you at the previous company?
Useful content, as always👍
I’m a low code platform software developer , started out with the traditional native code stuff , stumbled upon this thing and haven’t looked back since ⛽️
Where are you now?
So at other companies full stack include actual designs like figma illustration, etc geez it's like you are a designer, then developer, I though it's just react or angular based on Gona designs from designers
Thnc 4 the video
Well Done Katlego
Thank you for the insightful and encouraging video. Keep it up🙏Where did you apply for your current job?
LinkedIn
Super happy for u bro, got my first job this year for a UK based company
How bro? I have 3+ years, and still getting dribbled by my South African company! :(
started applying on indeed and career junction@@compton8301
I also started with a low salary 5K and was surprised when I got a new job the salary was way more
Great vid man, funny enough i started at 8k as junior and i thought it was a joke I wanted to quit until i saw this
Bro you were self-taught too?
This is too much my brother but you know your story well done bro.
That's how much u deserve ❤️ congratulations. I was upset when u said u earned 7000 as a software developer is a scam. They took advantage of u. I'm also a software developer student, and I wouldn't expect less than 30 thousand as my salary
lol, good luck with that.
Shoutout bro, big step but honestly I advise you stay on the market because I feel it's too low considering your skill-set.
To any developers reading this, please learn how to monetize your skills. I know this sounds bizzare but you can make good money with just HTML,CSS,WORDPRESS just by presenting yourself right.
Appreciate the advice man!
Which platforms would you recommend for free lance work?
@@katlegodeveloper shout out man
Thats encouraging
Awesommmeeeeeee!
What skill in SDLC will get your higher chances of employment and a higher salary?
That's awesome man. What's the name of your current company?
top company you work for boy
but also maybe they were also aware that youd find out true value and be discouraged by range you gave em
With all that knowledge, ability, skills and experience, I am shocked that u even suggested something as low as R15K. Anyway, Glory to God for what u eventually got and don't sell yourself short next time lol. Good luck
Congrats my guy. Out of curiosity, how old are you?
So I believe it's not about what you know but rather who you know. My friend was working for a company for around 2 years, one of the clients is a big bank and he befriended some of the people working at the bank. Then they asked them to come fill a position at the bank. He went from being a Junior to a Senior developer in just 2 years of working and his salary increased from R45k to R90k. I know many people that are earning way less than him and know much more than him.
It's like that everywhere nowadays i know guys who graduated with honours and are jobless and guys who graduated with simple passes with jobs. Life is about who you know much more than what you know. Networking is CRUCIAL.
@@sophon238 Yea but if you study CS in UCT there's 1% chances of not getting a job.
Hey Katlego I’m currently making the transition from architecture to software engineering I enjoy your content a lot. Keep sharing 👌🏾your journey
Any institution you recommend who are good at assisting with the transition? And how easy is it?
I am happy to hear that, I wish you all the best with your transition journey!
Am also interested in tech what advice can you give me i dont have IT background
@@Siphokuhle_Gixana-Fudumele I'd advice you to start with HTML and CSS, it will prepare you to get used to writing code.

I was a developer also,I was SQL Server developer
Wow😮
Eita Kat, love the content man, a quick one, did you initially want to do web or its something you changed to when you learned about that part of development?
No I wanted to do AI/Machine Learning but I when I learned HTML and CSS (Web dev) I knew that's exactly what I want to do my whole life!
@@katlegodeveloper bless up bro 🙏🏽🤝
Bro could you please make a video about where and how do you actually get all this freelance work??
Love your growth by the way
fiverr
Good on that company for not low balling you.
Why you dont mention it by dollar and the money in mothely or yearly
I also need to share my story coz i started from R5500😅...now i cant even believe my paylip
Self taught as well?
Resources please I also want to teach myself
Hi there. Is it a permanent role or contract?
Hey brother im also trying to get into software development and i would like to know how you went about especially being self taught
I will make a detailed video on that!
@@katlegodeveloper We will be waiting for it bro
What should I do to be a developer too
So you are basically a Full-Stack developer
That’s crazy, I was literally thinking what a software developer makes in SA a few minutes ago💀
Hahaha google can now read your thoughts, not just listen to your conversations 😅😂
@@danisimeonov4759 Lmao 🤣 😂. Wild!
Hi Katlego, I am learning coding as a 26 year old. Been working as a Network Engineer since after High School so have great knowledge in that, but I always wanted to go into coding. I am doing some basic HTML5 / CSS / Javascript lessons and courses.
How would you recommend to continue perusing the programming path as I would so much love to do? And where would I even start?
Checkout my recent video, it answers your questions nicely!
Was the company South african based
Its crazy how much one has to know to reach that figure in the software dev space yet in the Networking space that would be considered low end.
Just out of interest, how much are the highest earners you know making in Networking?
Hi Lion, I'm trying to get into Network (currently studying for my Comptia A+). Sorry but I'm not sure I got your point. Are you saying that it requires a lot more knowledge in Network to reach such figures or that such figures would be considered low end in Network? Are you perhaps in Network currently? Any advice to someone like me who wants to get into Network but doesn't have a degree nor experience in IT? I would really appreciate. 🙏🏾
Thanks in advance.
@@silungile3022a guy I've met personally is making +90k a month
what does networking involve?
